1 Description of instrument
1.1 Description

1.2 Function
The SPECTRO ARCOS FHX3X is an automatic optical emission spectrometer
providing simultaneous measurements. It uses inductively coupled plasma
excitation and a semiconductor-based detector system for quantitative and semi-
quantitative analysis of liquids.
The peristaltic pump is used to feed in the sample.
Subsequently, the liquid sample is nebulized and fed into the plasma as an
aerosol. The high temperature of the plasma (6,000 - 8,000 K) evaporates the
sample.
The excited atoms and ions emit element-specific radiation. A transfer optics feeds
this radiation into the optical system.
After the instrument completed processing the measurement signals, an external
software analyzes the measured intensities of the elements using a data interface.
The residual liquids of the sample are caught in a collecting vessel. Vapors
generated during the measurement process are extracted.

Every user of the instrument must have read and understood these operating
instructions. This applies in particular to the safety instructions.
2.1 Symbols used
The following symbols are used in these abbreviated operating instructions and/or
on the instrument.
If required, additional important information is available in connection with these

2.2 User information
Compliance with all safety instructions is mandatory. It’s for your own safety.
Compliance with the signs at the instrument’s place of installation is
mandatory.
The labels on the instrument must be observed.
Only properly trained personnel shall be permitted to operate the instrument.
While in its transport packaging, the instrument may only be transported by
expert organizations or by specifically trained personnel.
The instrument is front-heavy and its center of gravity is located in the optical
system (front left side of the instrument).
Only service personnel authorized by the manufacturer are permitted to
unpack, install, set up, and connect the instrument.
The instrument is intended for use indoors and in dry ambient conditions.
If applicable, personal protective equipment (protective gloves, goggles, etc.)
must be worn.
Only carry out operator maintenance work described in Chapter 7 of the
operating manual. Any further maintenance work (e.g. technical maintenance)
or repairs must only be performed by service personnel authorized by the
manufacturer.
Compliance with all safety instructions and accident prevention regulations is
mandatory during operation and while performing maintenance tasks.
Check the protective measures after every technical maintenance or repair
activity. The checking procedure is carried out in accordance with DGUV V3
(German Social Accident Insurance) or an equivalent national regulation.

Compliance with the maintenance schedule specified by the manufacturer
and the recording of all maintenance activities is mandatory. This helps
maintain the operational safety of the instrument.
Never tamper with the safety devices! If you suspect that a safety device does
not work properly, shut down the instrument immediately! Please contact your
Service Center.
Compliance with the information labels provided on the instrument is
mandatory.
Only genuine spare parts must be used when repairing the instrument. The
use of non-original parts may adversely affect the instrument’s safety and will
make the CE Conformity null and void. The use of spare parts from third-party
manufacturers are only permitted if approved by SPECTRO.
Only genuine spare parts and consumables ensure the safe operation and
achievement of the specified output. This applies especially to all components
of the sample introduction system and, in particular, to the plasma torch.
Operate the instrument only using system networks with protective ground
(PE) conductors.
The instrument must only be installed on a solid table.
The instrument must only be operated while the sliding door is closed.
The instrument must only be started with the blind plug and plasma torch
mounting inserted or the plasma torch mounting (option).
Compliance with the relevant safety regulations for the use of auxiliary aids
and operating equipment is mandatory.
Disconnect the power plug before opening the instrument.
2.2.1 Working zones and hazardous areas
The working zone is in front of and to the right of the instrument. During the
operation, work is performed partially in the hazardous area. The hazardous area
must be entered for the following tasks:
1. Inserting samples
2. Assembly of samplers
3. Setting up, installing, and optimizing the sample input
4. Installing the plasma interface
5. Measurement mode
6. Maintenance
7. Cleaning
8. Troubleshooting

2.3 Intended use
Only liquid samples may be directly analyzed with this instrument. Radioactive
substances and those that are self-igniting/explosive in air must not be analyzed.
Compliance with the applicable occupational health and safety regulations at the
workplace and the samples used (hazardous substances) is mandatory.
The maximum operating time without interruption is 24 hours per day in several
work shifts, 7 days per week.
The rated service life—taking into account the intended use—is up to a maximum
of 15 years, depending on the type of application.
The instrument must only be operated in compliance with the defined time
operating limits (operating time, shift sequence, maintenance & servicing
specifications).
The instrument is a stationary analyzer and it must not be moved during
operation.
During the operation of the instrument, compliance with the ambient
conditions according to the technical specification is mandatory.
During operation, adequate air extraction and ventilation of the operating
room must be ensured.
The instrument must only be operated with the specified operating media at
the max. specified pressures.
Never attempt to disable safety devices.
The collection containers for sample substances must be made of a material
that is resistant to the tested specimen.
Cleaning (decontamination) may only be performed with a cleaning agent
stipulated by the manufacturer.
Before using any cleaning or decontamination procedure other than the
procedure specified by the manufacturer, the operating company of the
instrument must check with the manufacturer that the intended method will
not damage the instrument.
Laboratory clothing must be tight-fitting so that the garment cannot be pulled
into rotating parts (e.g. peristaltic pump).

2.4 Prohibited operating conditions
Do not operate the instrument if one of the following conditions exists:
If the instrument is faulty or damaged.
If the instrument is not maintained at regular intervals.
If the ambient conditions do not comply with the specification.
If the area where the instrument is used is not a commercial/industrial
premise.
2.5 Misuse
Operating the instrument with components, accessories, parameters, materials,
and operating resources other than those specified by the manufacturer is
considered misuse of the instrument. Other cases of misuse are:
Unauthorized modification or conversion of the instrument and its safety
devices without complying with the applicable rules and regulations.
Bypassing or deactivating safety and protective devices.
Improper use of accessories or peripheral devices linked to the instrument.
2.6 Residual risks
This instrument has been manufactured in accordance with the latest state-of-the-
art technology. However, residual risks cannot be excluded entirely.
Warning! Risk of injury and health hazard!
Glass parts of the specimen introduction system can burst under pressure.
 Ensure that the sliding door is closed during the operation.
The cooling system contains a coolant.

Warning! Toxic and corrosive substances!
Hazardous sample residues may be present in the sample introduction
system and waste containers.
 When working on the sample introduction system and waste container,
wearing protective gloves and safety goggles is mandatory.
 Compliance with the safety data sheets as well as the H and P phrases
that apply to the sample material and/or the solvent used is mandatory.
 If hazardous waste is found, these substances must be properly
disposed off in accordance with the national (local) regulations.
Vapors may be generated from the sample material. These may be toxic
and/or corrosive.
 In these cases, protective measures, e.g. breathing apparatus, must be
provided
The sample material may be toxic and/or corrosive.
 Ensure that the sliding door is closed during the operation.
 Ensure that the external exhaust system functions properly.
Warning! Hot surface!
The plasma torch, plasma interface and load coil heat up during operation.
Always let the components cool down before working on them.
Warning - Rotating pump!
Long hair, drooping clothes and jewelry can get caught and pulled into the pump.
Injuries are likely to occur.
Never wear drooping clothes and jewelry when working near rotating parts.
A hairnet must be worn to cover long hair.
Since the pump develops only max. 80 Ncm, the risk of injury is only very slight.
Warning! Risk of suffocation!
The instrument is operated with argon. Argon is heavier than air. In case of
leakage, argon can accumulate in enclosed spaces, especially on the floor or
lower areas.
Ensure that adequate ventilation is provided. If necessary, oxygen sensors
must be installed.

Warning! Optical radiation!
Plasma emits UV radiation. A protective pane is used to shield from radiation.
Operate the instrument only with the protective pane in place and the door
closed.
Warning of non-ionizing radiation!
A high-frequency emitter is used to operate the ICP, dependent on the type of
model. The electromagnetic emission is below the legally specified limit values.
Employees must be alerted that an electromagnetic emitter is used at the
workplace, and a cardiac pacemaker symbol must be installed!
Persons wearing a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator must not be
permitted in the work zone!
Warning! High voltage!
Higher electrical voltages occur inside the spectrometer.
Shut down the instrument immediately if it is damaged.
Never tamper with the safety devices! If you suspect that a safety device
does not work properly, shut down the instrument immediately!

2.7 External automatic sample introduction
Information
When using an external automatic sample introduction, compliance with the
following safety instructions is mandatory:
Only properly trained technicians shall be permitted to install the connections
between the instrument and the external automatic sample introduction.
Compliance with the safety instructions in the SPECTRO ARCOS FHX3X
operating manual and the external automatic sample introduction is
mandatory.
In order to provide protection against hazardous substances, appropriate
accessories such as a cover with extraction and a collection tray must be
installed.
Compliance with the applicable occupational health and safety regulations at
the workplace and the samples used (hazardous substances) is mandatory.
Compliance with the safety data sheets of the hazardous substances is
mandatory.

3.7 Plasma torch box
In systems with axial plasma observation (Multiview EOP), the plasma torch in the
torch box housing is in a horizontal position, and in systems with radial plasma
observation (SOP/DSOI/Multiview-SOP/MultiView-DSOI), the plasma torch is in
the vertical position.
When using instruments with Multiview (optional), the plasma torch can be
installed horizontally (EOP) or vertically (SOP/DSOI), depending on the Multiview
setting.
