Safety
Before using your AmScope product, please read the following safety precauons carefully to avoid causing damage to
your AmScope product, or injury to yourself or others.
Turn o power if the instrument exhibits unusual or dangerous behavior such as eming smoke or unusual odors. These
can be indicaons of electrical problems, in which case the instrument should be disconnected from any power source if
safe to do so. Other indicators can be a loud buzzing sound or crackling. Contact AmScope to report such behavior.
Do not use around ammable liquids or gases. Electric instruments can ignite ammable substances which could result
in an explosion or re.
Do not use in a wet environment. Electrical components of the instrument can discharge when exposed to water, poten-
ally resulng in damage to the instrument, or injury to yourself or others.
Only use the provided power adapter or authorized replacement. Incompable power sources can cause damage to the
instrument. If you should lose the included power adapter, please contact AmScope for informaon about a replacement.
Do not dismantle. Dismantling can result in damage to the instrument, and potenal exposure to dangerous materials or
electric current.

Setup
Using Support Systems
The AFDM1080 can be used with support systems which use 50mm or 76mm mounng collars. By itself the microscope
can be mounted to a 50mm collar by sliding the lens into the collar.
To mount the AFDM1080 to a 76mm collar, either the RLAFDM ring light must be aached, or a mounng adapter such
as the AD-SZ76 must be used. When aaching the RLAFDM ring light, be sure to align the electrical pins with the inter-
face on the base of the microscope.
Once the ring light is fully seated, locate the two hex screws on the side of the ring light, and ghten them using a 1.5mm
hex wrench. With the ring light secured, the microscope can be inserted into a 76mm collar.

The USB Mouse
The microscope includes a USB mouse for navigang the microscope’s internal soware. Aach the mouse’s USB connec-
tor to the USB port labeled “USB Mouse”. The mouse’s scroll wheel can be used to control the lens’ zoom level. Scroll the
wheel upward to increase the zoom, and downward to decrease the zoom.
The HDMI Port
The microscope is designed to be used with an HDMI television or monitor. While operaonal, the microscope provides
a live video feed to the connected HDMI display, and uses on-screen controls to capture images or video, as well as to
change the microscope’s sengs. Aach one end of the supplied HDMI cable to the camera’s HDMI port. Connect the
other end of the cable to the monitor’s or television’s HDMI input. The video display may need to be manually congured
to use the correct input. If so, consult the display device’s manual.
Power
This microscope includes a power adapter which supplies the necessary 12VDC and 3A. Connect the supplied power
adapter by inserng its barrel connector to the microscope’s power port labeled “DC 12V3A”. Connect the AC plug into
an available power outlet. The power indicator located above the power buon should be red which indicates the cam-
era is receiving power. Press the power buon to inialize the microscope. The power indicator will change to blue. It will
take several seconds for the microscope to inialize.
The RLAFDM Ring Light
When using the RLAFDM ring light, the illuminaon level is controlled by the microscope’s internal soware. The micro-
scope must be powered on, and fully inialized.
Click the icon on the Camera Control Toolbar to display the illuminaon level. Click on the slider and drag to the le
to decrease the brightness, or to the right to increase the brightness.

User Interface
This microscope uses an on-screen UI to operate. The camera controls are located in the panel on the le side of the
window, the measurement toolbar on the top, and addional display controls and sengs are on the boom.
By default, the panels will only display when the mouse cursor is hovering over the appropriate area. Le-clicking
on the “pin” icon will maintain the panel’s visibility, but will prevent other panels from opening.

The Camera Control Panel
The Camera Control Panel controls the camera to achieve the best video or image quality according to the specic appli-
caons. To open the panel, move the mouse cursor toward the le edge of the video window.

Auto Exposure When Auto Exposure is checked, the system will automacally
adjust exposure me and gain according to the value of expo-
sure compensaon.
Exposure Compen-
saon
Available when Auto Exposure is checked. Slide to increase or
decrease the overall brightness to compensate for varying sub-
jects.
Exposure Time Available when Auto Exposure is not checked. Slide to increase
or decrease exposure me for achieving appropriate brightness.
Gain Available when Auto Exposure is not checked. Slide to increase
or decrease signal amplicaon. Increasing the amplicaon will
increase brightness without adjusng exposure me, but will
result in increased noise levels.
Red Manually adjust the proporonal Red level of the RGB video.
Green Manually adjust the proporonal Green level of the RGB video.
Blue Manually adjust the proporonal Blue level of the RGB video.
White Balance Adjusts RGB levels based on the overall video content.
Sharpness Slide to adjust the sharpness level of the video.
Denoise Slide to adjust the amount of noise-reducon to apply to the
video.
Saturaon Slide to adjust the color saturaon of the video.
Gamma Slide to increase or decrease the Gamma level of the video.
Contrast Slide to adjust the contrast of the video.
DC Select when using DC powered illuminaon. No icker compen-
saon.
AC (50Hz) Select when using AC powered illuminaon with 50Hz to re-
move ickering.
AC (60Hz) Select when using AC powered illuminaon with 60Hz to re-
move ickering.
Default Restore all values in the Camera Control Panel to their default
sengs.

Image Exposure
Manual Exposure
Image exposure controls the amount of light captured by the imaging device. Exposure me is used to set the amount
of me over which light is collected. More me will result in a brighter image. For most stac subjects, increasing expo-
sure me to achieve the appropriate brightness is the preferred method. For moving subjects, too much me will result
in blurring as the subject’s locaon changes over me. Exposure me must be limited in these cases to prevent excess
movement. Use of the gain seng would therefore be the preferred method to achieve opmal brightness. Gain controls
the amount of amplicaon applied to the signal generated by the imaging sensor. While the signal strength would be
increased, noise generated during the imaging process would also be increased.
This device allows you to set a manual exposure me up to 918ms. However, when the Auto Focus control panel is open,
the maximum exposure me will be 17ms. This ensures the microscope’s focus-detecon process has enough light to
funcon appropriately.
Auto Exposure
Auto exposure relies on soware to set the exposure me and gain. This simplies the workow, especially when captur-
ing images in changing lighng condions. As a microscope’s magnicaon changes, or the distance from the microscope
to the subject changes, the amount of light collected will also change. Auto exposure can connuously compensate for
these changes. This method assumes that the opmal amount of light would create an image with levels which would
average to a middle tone. Because of this, images of light subjects may appear too dark, and images of dark subjects may
appear too bright. For this reason, adjustment can be done using the exposure compensaon control, somemes called
exposure target. This allows you to increase or decrease the target level of brightness.
Color
White Balance
The color of an object is inuenced by the color of light reecng o of it or passing through it. Dierent light sources
produce light with dierent color-biases. Common examples are incandescent lamps which typically produce warm
colors compared to uorescent or LED lamps which produce cooler colors. This sort of bias is referred to as color tem-
perature. Due to this phenomenon, a white object may appear slightly yellow in morning sunlight, and slightly blue in
aernoon shade. To compensate for these variaons, digital imaging devices can process images using what is called
“white balance.” The white balance process shis colors based on the color of the light source, with the goal of produc-
ing a more neutral white or grey.

Le-clicking on a measurement object will open the Object Locaon & Properes Con-
trol Bar. The icons on the control bar:

When the Pin icon is clicked to lock the Measurement Toolbar, the Camera Control Panel will not be displayed unl
the Measurement Toolbar is unpinned by clicking the Exit icon .

Measurement Calibraon
Before using measurement tools, the calibraon process must be nished for the desired magnicaon. The purpose of
this process is to create a magnicaon prole which denes the relaonship between camera pixels and real units of
measure such as millimeters. Once this relaonship is dened, any shape drawn on the screen will provide accurate mea-
surements by translang the number of pixels into the desired unit of measure. Because the calibrated prole will only
be accurate for the magnicaon used during the calibraon, any change to the microscope’s zoom or working distance
will aect the accuracy of measurements.
To begin the process, click the calibraon icon. A message will appear on the screen stang that the camera is reseng.
The zoom factor and focal point will reset to neutral posions. A message will appear on the screen instrucng you to
place a reference object under the microscope, then adjusng the height of the microscope unl the object is in clear
focus. A ruler with millimeter graduaons is ideal for this process. You can adjust the zoom factor using the mouse’s scroll
wheel. Once the reference object is in clear focus, click the OK buon.
A line will appear on the screen along with a Calibraon window. Before a measurement can be recorded, you must en-
ter a value in the Calibraon window’s Magnicaon eld. The zoom factor which appears in the top-right corner of the
screen can be used (you may need to move the Calibraon window to reveal the zoom factor). Once the value has been
entered, click the Apply buon. Next, adjust the length of the calibraon line so it aligns with the reference object, and
spans a measurable distance. It is recommended to us the longest praccal distance, as this will yield the best accuracy.
Four buons on the boom of the screen can be used to nudge the line. Next, enter the measured length in the Actual
Length eld, then select the appropriate units. The Monitor Size eld is used to dene the diagonal measurement of the
screen being used, so the monitor’s magnicaon of the on-screen image is used in the calculaon. Once all values have
been entered, click the OK buon.
This calibrated magnicaon can now be accessed from the toolbar. You can select your preferred unit of measure, and
on-screen measurements will be calculated using that unit.

The Zoom tools allow you to use digital zoom to enlarge the on-screen image.
Horizontal and Vercal Flip are used to reorient the on-screen image due to image-inversion caused by a microscope’s
opcs or the camera’s physical orientaon.
Freeze Video will pause the live video.
A Crosshair or Grid can be displayed to assist with segmenng and counng, image alignment, and other operaons.
The LED control allows you to increase or decrease the brightness of the RLAFDM ring light when aached.
The Auto Focus panel provides controls for focus and zoom.
The Browse tool allows you to view media les recorded by the camera on the inserted SD media.
The Sengs panel can be used to customize certain display opons, manage saved magnicaon calibraons, choose
image formats, and congure the camera for network operaon.

Measurement
Measurement sengs allow you to customize shapes, and dene the precision of measurements.
Global Precision Sets the decimal scale: number of digits aer a decimal point
Calibraon Line Width Sets the width of lines used for calibraon
Color Sets the color of lines used for calibraon
Endpoint Sets the shape used at each endpoint of a line. Includes null or rectangle
Angle, Point, Line, Parallel Line, Vercal Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, Circle, Annulus, Two Circles, Arc, Text, Polygon, Curve,

Each shape or element can be customized using aributes such as Line Width and Color

Magnicaon
Magnicaon sengs allow you to edit stored magnicaon calibraons. Each me the calibraon process is completed,
you can save the results as a magnicaon preset. These presets can be selected from the Measurement Toolbar to use
the appropriate, calibrated sengs.
Name This is the user-dened name of magnicaon seng. Names typically incorporate the magnicaon of
the objecve lens used, and addional informaon pertaining to the microscope or camera used.
Resoluon The number of pixels per meter.
Clear All Clears all saved calibraon data
Delete Clears the selected calibraon data
Image Format
Image Format allows you to select the le type which will be used when saving images. You can choose JPEG or TIFF.

Video
Video Encode allows you to choose the video codec used when saving videos. Opons include MJPEG and H264.
SD Card
SD Card displays the format of any recognized Secure Digital storage media. If compable media is recognized, the me-
dia’s le system will be shown, such as FAT32, and NTFS. Unformaed cards and cards which do not use the compable
formats must be formaed on a computer or other device prior to being used with the microscope.

Language
Language seng selects which language will be displayed. Opons include English, Simplied Chinese, Tradional
Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.
Time
The Time sengs allow you to set the date and me.

Auto Focus
This seng allows you to select the color used for the ROI rectangle displayed when auto-focus is engaged.

Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous sengs include addional helpful sengs.
Clarity Factor Select whether to display the clarity factor or not. The clarity factor is a numeric value which
measures the clarity of the image based on detail and contrast. This can provide guidance
when focusing. Higher numbers are beer, and are factored into the auto-focus system’s
adjustments.
Ruler Select whether to display the on-screen rulers or not.
Camera Parameters Import Import previously-saved parameters from the SD card
