Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Leica DVM5000 Digital Microscope.
The Leica DVM5000 enlarges objects for the purpose of observing them,
allowing the user to save, print and quickly measure images.
This manual contains information on use of the product, series of proce-
dures starting from package content check, installation to cable connec-
tion, together with functions and specications of the unit and its periph-
eral devices.
Please read this manual thoroughly to deepen your understanding of the
product and ensure its correct use. Keep the manual in a safe place so that
it can be referred to whenever necessary.

The Operation Manual provides features and basic operating methods of
Leica DVM5000, as well as advanced operating methods such as obser-
vation, measurement and analysis. It also explains how to use recorded
images, such as creation of reports and saving images.

Alert statements in this Manual
The following alert statements apply to the products in this manual. Each
alert statement also appears at the locations needed in this manual to
attract your attention.
WARNING
Possibility of serious injury
Do not disassemble, pressurize, deform, heat over 212 °F (100 °C), or
dispose in re. Built-in lithium battery, re, explosion, burn hazards.
When replacing lamp, do not touch immediately after turning o
power. Hot surface may cause heat injury. After power is turned o, wait
at least 40 minutes to change lamp.
Do not open the cover other than the lamp holder cover. High volt-
age part inside may cause electric shock hazard.
Possibility of electric shock
The equipment must be properly grounded. Be sure to ground the equip-
ment before connecting the power plug into an outlet. When disconnect-
ing the ground wire, be sure to do so after removing the power plug from
the outlet.
Do not replace the lamp before turning o power and pulling out
the power supply plug from an outlet. Unless otherwise, it may cause elec-
tric shock.
CAUTION
Do not look into cap and a ber tip part during power-on. It is very
strong light and may cause permanent eye damage.
Do not use the enclosed power supply cable if it diers from
the local electrical power standards. An enclosed power supply cable is
125VAC dielectric strength. The power supply cable may not be suitable
for your local electrical power standards.
For safe and proper operation, only use a power supply cable that matches
the standards of your local electrical power system.

Power Supply and Cables
zConnect the power supply plug directly into the 3-pole socket with
ground terminal, 100 to 240 VAC, 50/ 60 Hz, and 15 A min. Using a
power strip to extend or share the power supply may cause re or
electric shock.
zIf the product is not going to be used for long periods of time, the
power cable plug must be disconnected from the power outlet.
zDo not touch the power plug with wet hands. Doing so may result in
electric shock.
zDo not place the power cable near heaters etc. or damage it.
zIf thunder is heard, do not touch the power plug.
zBefore connecting/disconnecting the cables, make sure that the
power to is turned OFF. Failure to observe this may result in re or
electric shock.
zBefore moving the product to another site, the power cable and
connecting cables must be removed. Damage to the cables may result
in re or electric shock.
zThe power cable included in the package is designed to be used in
Japan only. When it is used in a foreign country, please contact your
Leica Microsystems representative for information regarding the
approved power cable for use in that country according to the selec-
tion table ( P40).
Laser Safety
The Leica DVM5000 uses laser. Class 1 Laser Product
This product conforms to the requirements of DHHS rules 21 CFR Subchap-
ter J for Class 1 Laser Products. It also conforms to the requirements of (IEC
60825-1/A1: 2002) for Class 1 Laser Products.

zDo not let any foreign matter enter the product through vent holes
or DVD/CD slot. Failure to observe this may result in re or electric
shock.
zDo not place any items on the product. Doing so may result in break-
down.
zIf abnormalities, such as smoke, excessively hot external surface and
odd smells, are found, immediately stop operation, turn OFF the
power and disconnect the power plug from the AC power outlet.
Repair of the product by the user is very dangerous, so contact Leica
Microsystems.Instruction manual CD (this book)
zIf the product is dropped or damaged, turn OFF the power and discon-
nect the power plug from the AC power outlet, and then contact Leica
Microsystems. Continuing to use the product in such condition may
result in re or electric shock.
zWhen observing the monitor continuously for long periods of time,
make sure that you take sucient breaks.
zThe ber cable must be connected before turning ON the power.
Never remove the ber cable while the power is ON.
zIf the LCD panel is damaged, do not touch it with hands. Doing so may
result in injuries.
zWhen disposing of this product, handle it as industrial waste.
zThe product must be stored on a stable, horizontal surface.
zWhen carrying the product, make sure that all the cables are remo-
ved.
zWhen carrying the product, do so with two or more people.
zWhen installing the product, hold it rmly and install it on a stable,
horizontal surface.
zDo not use the product in upright position. When storing the product,
also do not store it in upright position.
zIf the LCD should be defective, please contact your Leica Microsystems
representative promptly.

Precautions for Correct Use
Installation
The product must be installed in the following areas:
(1) Areas with temperature of +5 to +40 °C and humidity of 25 to 85 %
(with no condensation)
(2) Horizontal, low-vibration, stable surface that can withstand the weight
of the main body
(3) Well ventilated areas without excessive dust
(4) Areas without rapid changes in temperature
(5) Areas away from water taps, water boilers, humidiers, coolers,
heaters or stoves
(6) Areas that are neither too hot, too humid, too cold nor too dry
(7) Areas away from items that generate strong magnetic eld (e.g.
motor, transformer, television, speaker, magnet)
(8) Areas away from items containing water
(9) Do not use and store the product in an upright position.
Lens and Camera
zWhen handling the lens, make sure it is secured rmly to prevent it
dropping. If the lens is dropped, it may be damaged.
zDo not leave the camera unattended for long periods of time without
the lens mounted. Doing so may cause dirt or foreign matter to collect
on it causing black shadows to appear in images. If the product is to
be kept without the camera and lens mounted, you should attach the
caps supplied with them.
Cleaning
zIf foreign matter has collected on the camera or lens, remove it with
a cotton swab or blower brush. Do not remove with metal tools like
tweezers. Using them may result in scratches.
zForeign matter collected on the ends of the ber cable must be remo-
ved with a cotton swap or soft cloth.

zSince the product has a built-in hard disk, the following points must
be observed.
- While the HDD access LED is lit, do not expose the product to shocks
and do not remove the power plug. Failure to observe this may
damage the data or hinder the product from operating correctly.
- While the HDD access LED is lit, do not turn OFF the main power.

from operating correctly.
zBack up the data stored in the HDD periodically.
zDo not forcibly tilt the hinge of the monitor backward.
zIf a DVD/CD other than a recommended one is used, the product may
be damaged or the drive life may be shortened.
zWhen disposing of this product, handle it as industrial waste.
zTurning o the power immediately after turning it on, or turning on
the power immediately after turning it o may cause the equipment
to malfunction.

Connecting Peripheral Devices

ACS compatible lens
1 Insert the lens into the end of the camera head.
If a cap has been attached, remove it.
When attaching a lens that connects the fiber
cable directly, remove the fiber cable using the
hexagonal wrench (supplied with the lens).
For details, refer to the instruction manual of
the lens.
2 Turn the camera head mount dial.
3 Turn the lock screw to fix the lens to the camera
head.

Attaching a Lens (Option) to the Camera
Connecting the Dedicated Cable of the ACS Compatible Lens (Option)
Insert the dedicated cable supplied with the ACS
compatible lens into the ACS connector on the KH-7700.
For the connection method for the ACS compatible
lens and dedicated cable, refer to the instruction manual
supplied with the lens.
Connecting the Camera Cable
Hold the camera cable plug with the slit facing up, insert the plug into
the connector, and then turn the screw to secure the plug.
To disconnect the plug, loosen
the screw and pull the plug out straight.
Connecting the Fiber Cable
Insert the fiber plug into the light source connector, and turn the fixing
ring to secure the fiber plug.
Mounting the Lens (Option) to the Stand (Option).

compatible lens and dedicated cable, refer
to the instruction manual supplied with

1 POWER button Turns ON/OFF the power to Leica DVM5000.
Make sure the main power switch is set to ON.
When LED is lit: Power ON
When LED is not lit: Power OFF
2 LAMP LED Lit while the metal halide lamp is ON.
3 HDD ACCESS LED Lit while the hard disk is in use.
4 DVD ACCESS LED Lit while the DVD/CD is in use.
5 EXPOSURE MODE button Switches exposure time adjustment method between automatic (AUTO) and
manual (MANUAL).
When LED (AUTO) is lit: Auto adjustment is selected.
When LED (AUTO) is ashing: Exposure pause
When LED (MANUAL) is lit: Manual adjustment is selected.
When LED (AUTO+MANUAL) is lit: Shutter speed is currently adjusted
in camera setting dialog box on the screen(in this case, the shutter
speed displayed on the screen does not match the one indicated by the
switch).
6 ANNOTATION button Use to select whether to display comments etc.
When LED is lit: Comments etc. are displayed.
When LED is not lit: Comments etc. are not displayed.
7 IMAGE button Switches the monitor image display mode between through image (moving
image) and freeze image (still image).
When LED (FREEZE) is lit: Freeze (still) image is displayed.
When LED (THROUGH) is lit: Through (moving) image is displayed.
8 AQUIRE button Records a still image. The LED is lit during recording.
9 MOVIE button Records a through (moving) image. The LED is lit during recording.

10 WHITE BALANCE button Automatically adjusts white balance. The LED is lit during automatic adjust-
ment.
11 LAMP control Used to adjust light volume.
Normally, MAX must be set.
12 User mode setting switch Enables you to select parameters in the camera setting menu easily accord-
ing to the object.
Typical combinations are assigned to A through F in advance.
Parameters set according to the object can be assigned to G through P.
13 Exposure time control Allows you to select the exposure time when the exposure time adjustment
method has been set to manual (MANUAL).
14 DVD/CD slot Insert a DVD or CD into this slot. To remove the DVD/CD, perform necessary
steps shown in the monitor screen.
15 Microphone connector Connect a microphone to this connector.

USB connector Connect a USB compatible device (e.g. mouse, keyboard, USB memory) to
this connector.
• Two USB connectors are also provided on the back panel.
• When connecting a printer, it must be connected to a USB
connector on the back panel.
18 BRIGHTNESS control Allows you to adjust brightness of camera image when the shutter speed
adjustment method has been set to automatic (AUTO). The more the control
is turned toward MAX, the brighter the image is.

22 External remote terminal Connect an external remote switch (e.g. foot switch) or similar to this
connector.
23 AUX connector Connect the 2 axis motor controller CT-7 (option) to this connector.
24 AC inlet Connect the power cable to this inlet.
25 Fan A blowout fan is used.
26 Camera connector Connect the camera cable to this connector.
27 Printer connector Connect a PictBridge compatible printer using a USB cable.
28 Ethernet connector Connect a LAN cable to this connector.
29 USB connector Connect a USB compatible device (e.g. mouse, keyboard) to this
connector.
• Four USB connectors are also provided on the front panel.
• When connecting a printer, make sure it is connected to the
printer connector.
30 ACS connector Connect the dedicated cable (supplied with ACS compatible lens) to
this connector.
31 Mode selector switch Allows you to change the screen resolution when an external
monitor is connected.
Normally, “0” must be set. The screen resolution changes automatically.
32 RGB connector Connect the RGB cable to this connector.
33 Main power switch Turns ON/OFF the power to Leica DVM5000.
34 Light source connector Connect the ber cable to this connector.

Installation Site
Keep a minimum clearance of 200 mm behind and 100 mm at the sides of
the Leica DVM5000 to improve air circulation.
Mounting spacer bars prevents damage to cables that may be
caused as the Leica DVM5000 is pressed against the wall.
A total of four spacer bars can be mounted.
