General features of the ART5.4/ART8.8 multiroom audio-server.
ART5.4/ART8.8 can relay music to 4 or 8 zones respectively. ART5.4 has 2 built-in FM tuners, 1 built-in digital audio
player and 2 external RCA inputs. The ART8.8 has an additional 2 digital audio players and 1 external analogue input
(RCA).
The FM tuners: 8 presets, RDS information, search functions, etc.
The digital players can play the most popular formats, such as .MP3, .M4A, .WAV, .WMA, etc.
That means it’s possible to play 8 different sound sources in 8 different zones with just one single device.
You can operate most of the basic functions on the device with the RF remote control supplied.
To operate the more advanced functionalities of the device (such as managing your music database, etc.),
youcanuseanykindofPCortablet.Justlookupthedeviceonastandardbrowsertondalltheoptions
available on a user-friendly webpage.
The device comes with a software update mechanism so that you can quickly install the very latest options and most
recent innovations.

6. Installing and placing the unit.
Make sure you leave a minimum 4 cm of space free around the unit to allow accumulated operating heat to dissipate.
•Baseconnectionofloudspeakers
 Providecabling(star-form)cablingfromtheloudspeakerstotheunit(g2-12).Whendoingsorespectthepolarity
of the loudspeaker: red clamp of the loudspeaker with the red wire connection, black clamp of the loudspeaker with
the black wire connection. We recommend use of banana plugs. The loudspeaker may be of a 4 or 8 ohm type.
•RFantenna
 ConnecttheRFantennasuppliedtotheconnectionprovidedforit((g2-2).Avoidplacingintheimmediatevicinity
of possibly interfering transmitters, such as plasma screens, monitors, antennas,…). If installing the ART5.4/8.8 unit
inside a metal cabinet, install the RF antenna outside the cabinet. Changing the position of the antenna once con-
nected may result in better reception.
•FMantenna
 YoucanmakeuseoftheFMantennacablesupplied.Plugthisintotheconnectionintendedforit(g2-10).
We recommend use of an outdoor antenna or coax connection for still better reception.

7. Synchronising the RF remote control with the unit.
Before the ART5.4/8.8 unit can be used with the remote control supplied (RM54.88) it must be synchronised in the
wireless network of the ART5.4/8.8 system.
• Brieypress(<1sec.)the‘setup’buttononthefrontoftheunit.Themessage“addremote”appears.
• Thenpresslonger(2sec.)onthe’setup’button,whereby“enteringRFmode”appears.
• Viathemenuontheremotecontrolgoto“settings”,“RF-network”,presson“reset”(=OKbuttonfor2sec.).
Theremotecontrolwillthenseekcontactwiththeunit.Aftersometime(upto30sec.)themessage“remotes
added#”appearsontheunit’sdisplay,wherebythenumberwillincreasebyone(remotecontrolfoundforthis
session).
• Thenbrieypress(<1sec.)the‘setup’buttononthefrontoftheunittoexitthismode.“leavingRFmode”appears
on the display.
• Itmaynowtakeupto30sec.beforethenetworkissetupwithitssecurity.
• Note:IfasecondART5.4/8.8 unit is in the area, we recommend switching it off while synchronising the remote
control.

8. Checking the RF reception level.
The range of the remote control can depend strongly on the environment in which the unit is used. Metal walls,
fences,columnsetc.caninuencetheoperatingrange.TheRSSIvalueoffersanindicationastohowwelladata
packet will be received. This value varies between 28 and 85. One has the greatest risk of losing communication from
a value of 80.
You can monitor the range in the following way:
• Setazonetoactive(soundon)
• Gotothesettingsmenu
• Choose‘RFNetwork’
• YouwillseetheRSSIvalueofthelastmessagereceived.
• Pressonvolumelower/higher.
• YouwillseetheRSSIvaluechangingeachtimeyoupressthevolumebuttons.
Here some indications:
RSSI: -28…-70 : Good range.
RSSI:-70...-80 :Sufcientrange.
RSSI: >-80 : Poor range, possible loss of communication.
Whenever the antenna symbol is moving, there is no connection with the base unit (ART8.8 or ART5.4)
9. RF network reset.
9.1 With an RF network reset, all synchronised settings will be deleted from the memory. At the same time, the
system will adjust to the best RF channel taking the ambient conditions into account. Any network reset takes place
on the ART5.4/8.8 base unit.
You can perform a network reset in the following way:

9.2 RF Extender.

10.7HowdoIplaymydigitalmusic?(FromSDcard,USB).
Neither the ART8.8 nor the ART5.5 has a hard disk to update audio tracks. The internal memory of the ART5.5/ART8.8
updates(indexes)audioleswhichareavailableoneitheraUSBdevice,SDcardorsharednetworkdrive.
The ART8.8 has 3 digital players which can play your favourite music simultaneously. In the case of ART5.4 this is a
single digital player. These players can play the most common formats, such as .MP3, .WAV, .M4A or .WMA. If a USB
device, such as a USB stick or USB hard-disk, or SD card, is plugged into the USB port at the front and/or at the back,
the system will analyse the audio tracks automatically (see also page 18) and then sort these by artist, album and
track. Whichever USB port is scanned, a single database will be created for all players. Depending on the number of
tracks, this can take anything from a few seconds to over half an hour. In general, this will take 1 second for every
track detected.
You can continue to operate the device normally whilst the system is scanning.
If the USB device is removed from the system, the tracks on this medium will be deleted from the database. If you
have to index a large number of tracks (for example, on a USB hard-disk), we would advise you do this on an NAS
(Network Access Server) drive, because of the more permanent nature of this database.
10.8 How do I play my digital music from the network?
Youshouldalsorefertothedescriptionofthewebserverandcongurationofthenetwork.
If you have a large number of tracks, we would advise you to update these on an NAS (Network Access Server) drive.
ThedirectorywithaudioleswillbeaddedtotheART5.4/8.8viathedevice’swebserver.Theseareaddedtothegen-
eral database in the same way as for a USB device. However, if there’s a power failure or the connection with the NAS
is broken, the database will retain everything without having to re-index.
Ifyoupressontheplaycommandandnotracksappearinthe‘activeplaylist’(seewebserverfunctions)then50
tracks will be randomly picked from the database and played. The screen will display the information about the track
which is playing.
You can also select and play a playlist
Note: playlists are managed via the webserver and cannot be created using the remote control.
Select detail of the player and the following screen will appear:
select the playlist and then press Enter.

11. Activating external sources via infrared.

11.1HowdoIactivatesourcescoupledinanaloguemode(infraredcontrol)?
On the ART8.8 and ART5.4youcanconnect3respectively2external,analoguesources(g2-11).Eachofthose
sources can be activated by infrared via the IR-P1 up to IR-P3 (Fig2-1). Here, the infrared codes of the original remote
control of the analogue source will be synchronised to the ART5.4/8.8 unit. These external sources can be activated
via menus on the RM88 remote control (e.g. play, stop...on a CD player). We can provide a maximum of 10 buttons
per device with a function.
To use this option you need an optional mini IR transmitter (ArtSound ref M1)
11.2SynchronisingtheIRcodes(devices).
Youcansynchronisethecodesof8different‘devices’.ThesewillbestoredintheinternalmemoryoftheART5.4/8.8.
Proceed as follows to synchronise IR codes of a device:
• GotoSettingsandselect“Devices”.
• Choosea“Device”whichisfree(1-8)andRenameinthenextscreen(e.g.CD-player)viathekeypadandpress‘OK’

infrared command. Hold the original remote control of your unit about 2 cm from the ART8.8 window and press and
hold the Play button until the IR indication on the RM88 stands still.
• Selectthe’test’buttonandpressOK.TheinfraredcodewillnowbesentoutviaIRP-1.Checkwhethertheanalogue
source reacts to the code sent out. If necessary, increase the repeat code and test again or repeat the synchronisa-
tionifitfailsthersttime.Whensendingoutthecode,theLEDontheIRtransmitterM1willlightup.
• Select‘OK’andconrmtosavetheIRcode.
• RepeatthisproceduretosynchronisetheotherIRfunctions.

11.3 Creating the external source layout.
The layout of a device can contain a maximum of 10 buttons. We can thus couple a button to a learned IR
code.
• Inthesetup-menu,choose‘Devices’andselectthe‘device’wantedfromthelist(e.g.CD-player).
• Inthefollowingmenuoptionchoose‘Layout’.
• Youwillnowseethe10emptybuttonelds.Choosethekeypadeldwantedandselect.
• Choosefromthelistoffunctions(e.g.‘stop’).

layout.

11.4 Assigning an external source to a device.
Oncethedevicehasbeencongured(seeaboveprocedure)anexternalsourcecanbeassignedtothedevice.
The infrared codes and the keypad layout for that source will be copied.
• GotoSettingsandchoose‘Ext.Sources’.
• ChoosethedesiredExt.Source.(1-3forART8.8 and 1-2 for ART5.4).

• Choosethedesireddevice(e.g.CD-player).
11.5 Renaming the external source.

The name entered will be displayed whenever that source is chosen.

12. Integrated webserver.
12.1Networkset-up.
The IP settings for this new device will automatically be set to DHCP mode. This means that a server or router in the
networkwillassignanIPaddresstothedevice.YoucanalwaysviewthecurrentIPaddressbybrieypressingthe
set-up for artxx and by continuing to keep the button depressed until the 12-digit IP address becomes visible
(e.g., 192.168.123.110). By using this address in the general Internet browser, you will go to the device’s webserver.
Thisaddressmaybemodiedinthesettingsthere.InDHCPmode,theIPaddressisnotalwaysthesame,strictly
speaking. For advanced routers this is sometimes the case; in order to get round this problem you can work with
axedIPaddress.Saveyouraddresstofavourites(orbookmarks)sothatyoucansurfwithoutproblemstothe
ART5.4/8.8.
RESETLAN(softwareversionsuptorelease4):
Whenthe‘ResetLAN’functionisperformed(quicklypresstheset-upbuttononthedeviceseveraltimesandthen
keep it depressed longer to perform a reset), a standard permanent IP address will be assigned to the device,
specically:192.168.123.80.ThedevicewillnowbesettotheDHCP-offmode.Thiscanaccommodatearangeofalot
of devices, including routers. Even so, the range of the computer must also be set to within that same range. You may
also set this permanent IP address to suit your needs using the webserver settings.
RESETLAN(softwareversionshigherthanrelease4):
WhenevertheResetLANfunctionisrun(brieypresstheset-upkeyofthedeviceseveraltimesandthenpressand
hold to run the reset) the DHCP mode will be set to ON. So the IP address has to come from a router or server in the
network.
After the IP address has been reset, the web server functionality will be restarted.
This will take about 1 or 2 minutes.
12.2 Operation of the webserver.
ART54.88 has 3 different webservers on board, which are each applied based on the type of screen or computer used.
Most complete webserver: surf to http://ipadres/
TicktheIPaddressinthewebbrowserofyourPCorMAC(see12.1networksetup)todenetheIPaddress.
This webserver contains all the elements needed to use and control the ART54.88.
NB:Thebuilt-inwebserversarecompatiblewiththemostcommoninternetbrowsers,suchasIE8/9,Mozillarefox,
Safari. Always make sure you have the latest version of your webbrowser. In some cases the cache memory of the
browserrstneedstobedeletedinordertoloadthepagefromthewebserver.OnPCsthisisusuallyviatheF5key,
on MAC this happens via the CMD-R key.

1. Select player 1-3 (ART8.8) or player 1 (ART5.4)
2. Keys for operating player: in sequence, previous
track,play,stop,nexttrack,repeat,shufe.
3. Active playlist: This is the list of tracks which is ready
toplay.Ifyoupressplaywithoutselectingaspecic
album, track or artist, the active playlist will be
50 randomly selected tracks.
4. Make your selection here: search Music Database
(Muziekdatabase), list with all artists, list with
allalbums,searchvialesystem,managingthe
playlists.
 12.2.5Digitalplayers.SeachingtheDatabase.
Search by typing in the full or partial name in the search
eld.Checkthe‘Exact value’ (Exacte waarde) box if
you want the search action to be precise. You can do an
‘and-or’searchforartist,album,title,yearofgenreby
checking off the various options. Press on the magnifying
glass to start your search.

When selecting a track, album or artist, the following
options can be actuated via the right-hand mouse button
(valid in all lists):
• ‘Add to active playlist’ (Aan actieve afspeellijst

• ‘Play’ (Afspelen): play selected track, album or artist.
• ‘Add to a playlist’ (Aan een playlist toevoegen): add
the selected track, album or artist to a new or existing
playlist.

This displays the list of songs as they are stored on the
different media.
In this example we see:
\HardDisk this is a USB device (USB stick, SD card or
USB hard-disk) directly connected to the ART5.4/8.8.
\\N2200\NAS_Public : this is a shared network drive
(see section on music database settings). In this exam-
ple,thenetworkdriveiscalled‘N2200’,thefolderwith
music:‘NAS_Public’
By pressing the + sign, you will see all the sub-folders
and tracks. The right-hand mouse button options are
valid here too.

Via the Settings/Music Database (Instellingen muziek-
databank) menu, all the settings for the Netwerk Shares
andUSBdrivescanbecongured.
Congurationofnetworkdrive.(NAS)
We would advise you to use a NAS (Network Access
Server) rather than a computer with shared folders. A
NAS is always available on the network and so too the
audioles.AskyourITsupplieraboutacquiringoneof
these devices.
Step 1: First and foremost, it’s important to know the
exact name of the NAS where the shared folder with
music is located. In this example, we have included a
NAS (Network Access Server) drive in the Network.
Via ‘My Network’ (mijn netwerk) you can search the
name of the drive (e.g. N2200).
Step 2: Note down the exact name of the shared folder
on the network drive. In our example, our music is in the
‘iTunes_music’folder.
Step 3: Select ‘Add network share’ (Netwerk share to-
evoegen) in the webserver of ART5.4/8.8 (Settings-Music
Database) (Instellingen-Muziekdatabank).
Step 4: Enter the path with the data which you noted
down in steps 1 and 2 in the following format: \\name
of the server\name of the shared map. You should also
enter you user name and password for this NAS.
Step 5: We can see that our NAS was added in the list
of‘NetworkShares’.The‘true’noticationmeansthat
this drive is available. Indexing starts automatically. As a
rough guideline, it will take 1 second per track to add this
to the database. The indexing progress is shown via a
baratthebottomofthe‘Musicdatabase’screen.Youcan
now carry on working with the system as usual. Tracks
of this share can only be played once the indexing has
completed.

We go about this in the same way as for sharing an NAS.
Step 1: Decide on the name of the computer and the
name of the shared folder. The name of the
computer can be determined by requesting the
propertiesof‘MyComputer’.Thiscanbedoneby
clicking on the relevant icon with the right-hand
mouse button.
Step 2: Decide on the name of the shared folder with
music on this computer.
Step 3: enter this data in the Network Shares of the
webserver. The user name and password are
those that you log in with
Note(4):forWindowsXP:ifyourcomputerisincluded
in a local domain (for example in business networks),
this must be the user name preceded by the domain
name.E.g.username:-domain_name\user_name
Note(5): from version 4 onwards, you can also use the
IP address of the PC the shared folder is located on.

function and using the name of the NAS (see above) then
remains the solution.
