1INTRODUCTION TO MODBUS AND PRODUCT
Thank you very much for purchasing our Control Basic Plus pump with MODBUS-RTU features. This manual is intended
for the professional installer; if you are not, please consult your official distributor. MODBUS is an open field bus
successfully used throughout the world to connect field devices to a main controller. This is the reason why MODBUS
has been our choice to offer to our customers and partners an automated solution, easy to integrate not only with our
brand products but also with a vast collection of third party components and controllers. MODBUS, MODBUS-RTU and
other related names are registered trademarks of MODBUS Organization. Further information and documentation can be

1.1 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The Control Basic Plus pump implements MODBUS-RTU as a control-communications feature that allows operation and
supervision in a MODBUS automation environment. Preventive maintenance and fault analysis is also possible thanks to
the implementation of internal registers in the pump with the more relevant operational and error events. When the pump
is installed, you are not forced to connect it to a MODBUS system, if you do not aim to control or supervise it externally.
The pump can run in local mode, as traditionally done, without using the MODBUS layer. However, we expect that the
implementation of MODBUS-RTU in the pump will open to our advanced customers and partners a wide range of new
opportunities and implementation scenarios, thanks to the simplicity and flexibility of the MODBUS-RTU layer. Using a
MODBUS-RTU message, the pump can start & stop by set-point report errors and so on, giving to the user/installer a
wide range of new features.
1.2 BASIC CHARACTERISTICS
The MODBUS communication system provides a Master/Slave implementation among devices sharing a physical
connection. For the pump, the physical connection is a RS-485 half-duplex serial layer, which has been chosen among
other options due to its wide implementation and ruggedness. The pump is designed to run in a single-master system. In
this implementation, Master and Slave devices have clear roles, and it is crucial to clear understand these roles for
proper system implementation.
Master Device
Device that controls the data exchange in the bus and, if necessary, implements co-ordination tasks among
different slaves (i.e. PLC Programmable Logic Controller, SCADA, etc.).
Slave Device
Devices connected to the bus that responds to the requests from the master, either reporting information or
executing tasks as per Master request.
2FRONT PANEL CONTROLS
The pump's front panel contains various buttons and indicators, to indicate and control the state of the pump. These are
shown in Image 1.

2.1 STATUS INDICATORS
The large LCD displays key information about the status of the pump, including current mode of operation, set-point and
warnings or faults.
2.2 CONTROL BUTTONS
There are four control buttons on the pump’s front panel. The function of all these buttons is explained in detail in the
pump’s User Manual.
3CONNECTIONS
3.1 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
3.1.1 RS-485 STANDARD CONNECTIONS
The Control Basic Plus pump implements ANSI/TIA/EIA-485 standard communications, also known as RS-485. Some
manufacturers swap the “A” and “B” connections, which may cause confusion, but this is not the case with the pump.
Keep this in mind when connecting the pump to MODBUS appliances from other companies.

Some manufacturers swap the A and B connections" which may cause confusion, in this device B is the T+R+ and the A
is the T-R-, the following pinout correspond to the female connector (the connector installed on the Pool Basic
Double/Control Basic/Optima Plus)
The recommended wiring for a MODBUS-RTU communication is based on a linear structure, active bus with termination
at both ends. It is possible to couple and uncouple devices during operation without affecting other devices. The wire
shall be twisted and shielded according to EN 50170.
The values of transmission rate supported by the device allows maximum cable length of 1,200 m without repeaters, or
up to 10 km using repeaters, when installed according to the standard.
For the balanced pairs used in an RS-485 system, a Characteristic Impedance with a value higher than 100 Ohms is
preferred, especially for 19200 and higher baud rates.

3.1.2 BUS ISOLATION AND TERMINATION RESISTORS
If the communication bus is accessible by the user, it shall be double insulated. In general, the accessibility of the bus to
users will depend on each installation; safety isolation has been implemented in the pump’s physical bus layer.
Moreover, for safety purposes, it is recommended to ensure that other devices sharing this bus also implements this
insulation. Additionally, the use of bus insulated devices also increases the equipment reliability, larger immunity to
electromagnetic interference, longer life, and more stability over the range of temperatures. Whenever single or multiple
devices are sharing a bus physical connection, it is recommended to use terminating resistors at the ends of the bus,
even more so when use large cable length or high speed data rates. The terminating resistor is used to prevent an RF
signal from being reflected back from the end, causing interference. The terminating resistor must be in both ends of the
bus, connected in parallel (as shown in the image below). A typical value of this resistance is 120Ω, 0.5W. The value of
the resistor must be the same in both ends. The terminating resistors are labelled “R_T” in the diagram.

4MODBUS FUNCTIONS
4.1 FUNCTIONS SUPPORTED
Please, be careful when issuing MODBUS commands, and make sure that the function used is correct.
REGISTER ACCESS MODE
Functions in register access mode are implemented according to the MODBUS-RTU standard described in
http://www.modbus.org/docs/Modbus_Application_Protocol_V1_1b3.pdf In general registers are unsigned 16 bit coded.

4.2 EXCEPTION RESPONSES
Exception responses are implemented according to the MODBUS-RTU standard, described in the chapter MODBUS

The exceptions implemented are: 1,2,3 and 6.
5DEVICE DESCRIPTION AND CONFIGURATION
5.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Using MODBUS commands, the pump’s set-point can be changed, also, various state and diagnostic information can be
retrieved.
When a simultaneous request is made through MODBUS, the front panel has the priority. It's possible only to read
certain parameters.
It is the operator’s responsibility to check that values sent are consistent with the application.
In this manual, the numbers in hexadecimal have been represented with the format 0xZZ, where ZZ is the number.

5.2 STATE MACHINE DIAGRAM
When the pump powers on, it will resume operation in normal operating mode. The current state is shown on the LCD.
The pump has four modes of operation: Normal Operating, Calibration, Programming and Logging. The pump can move
from any one state to another. Image 5 shows this.

5.3 CONFIGURING THE PUMP
5.3.1 ADDRESS
The address of the pump in the bus is set on the pump (0x00 only read in holding register).
ID_Address:
Address of the pump in the bus.
Factory setting:
0x01
The factory default is 0x01. However if more than one pump wants to be implemented both ID_Address values must not
match. This situation can be avoided by changing from device.
5.3.2 COMMUNICATIONS SETUP
It's possible enabling or disabling the communication, change the watchdog configuration, watchdog time, address, parity
and baudrate.
5.4 WATCHDOG TIME OUT
The watchdog is a timer implemented in the pump to check if the communications in the bus is still alive. When the pump
loses communication for a time greater than the watchdog_time, the pump perform the action selected in: wdg config.,
wdg alarm, hardware reset, com. reset and stop dosage.

5.4.1 WATCHDOG TIME
The watchdog triggering time is defined in the holding register 0x10. This time is set in seconds. A value of 0 means that
the watchdog is disabled, and this is the default value.
To enable the watchdog feature, set the watchdog_time to a value different from 0 or select a value from the pump.
Example: Set watchdog triggering time to 30s Transmit Message:

Where:
01 is the slave address.
10 is the function used. Write Multiple Registers.
00 10 is the address of the holding register to be written.
00 01 is the number of registers to be written, 1 in this case.
02 is the number of bytes to be sent
00 1E is the value to be sent, 30 in decimal.
24 C8 is the CRC.
Now, the watchdog_time is set to 30s. Therefore, whenever two properly constructed messages are read in less
than 30s, including those not specifically addressed to the pump, the watchdog is reset.
6CONTROLLING THE PUMP
6.1 SET-POINT SETTING
The active set-point is selected using holding register (0x23 Set-Point pH - 0x24 Set-Point ORP). Any value outside the
acceptable range is not applied and the exception code 0x03 (illegal data value) will be answered to the command.
7MONITORING PUMP STATUS
7.1 READING PUMP MODE
The current pump mode is indicated using two bits in input register 0x00, bits 1 and 3. In combination, they specify the
mode. The following table defines the combinations and their meaning.

8WARNINGS AND ALARMS
The pump will detect and provide alarms for the following reasons:
1. Low level chemical product. Displayed on LCD as “Level”
2. OFA alarm (time>70%). Displayed on LCD as “OFA Alarm”
3. OFA alarm (time=100%). Displayed on LCD as “OFA Stop”
4. Flow rate alarm. Displayed on LCD as "Flow"
5. System error. Displayed on LCD as “Parameter error”
6. Communication Watchdog alarm. Displayed on LCD as “Alarm WDG"
The pump makes the current status of each of these available, as well as providing a limited set of historical data.
8.1 READING CURRENT WARNING/ALARM STATUS
Each of these is also accessible in input register 0x01.

8.2 READING HISTORICAL ALARM DATA
When a warning or fault happens, this event will be recorded in historical alarms. In some cases when the situation still
allows the pump to run. In some situations, the pump will stop and gives a fault.
It is possible to check which alarms have been activated since the last alarm reset.
Each of these is also accessible in holding register 0x20

Dieses Handbuch wendet sich an den professionellen Installateur. Wenn Sie keiner sind, wenden Sie sich bitte an Ihren
offiziellen Händler. MODBUS ist ein weltweit erfolgreich eingesetzter Feldbus zur Verbindung von Feldgeräten mit einer
Hauptsteuerung. Eben aus diesem Grund haben wir uns für MODBUS entschieden, um unseren Kunden und Partnern

1.1 FUNKTIONSPRINZIP
Die Control Basic Plus Pump implementiert das Protokoll MODBUS-RTU als Kontroll- und Kommunikationsfunktion, mit
der der Betrieb und die Kontrolle in einer MODBUS-Automatisierungsumgebung möglich sind. Dadurch, dass interne
Register mit den wichtigsten Betriebs- und Störungsereignissen in die Pumpe implementiert werden, besteht außerdem
die Möglichkeit der vorbeugenden Wartung und der Störungsanalyse. Der Anschluss der installierten Pumpe an ein
MODBUS-System ist allerdings nicht zwingend, wenn Ihnen nicht daran gelegen ist, die Pumpe extern zu steuern oder
zu überwachen. Die Pumpe kann ebenso im traditionellen Lokalbetrieb funktionieren, ohne Einsatz der MODBUS-
Eigenschaften. Andererseits sind wir der Meinung, dass wir unseren technisch versierten Kunden und Partnern mit der
Implementierung von MODBUS-RTU in die Pumpe - eben dank der Einfachheit und Flexibilität des MODBUS-RTU
Layers - eine große Anzahl neuer Möglichkeiten und Implementationsszenarien eröffnen. Bei Verwendung einer
MODBUS-RTU Meldung kann die Pumpe durch eingestellte Sollwerte, anhand von Fehlermeldungen usw. gestartet und
gestoppt werden, womit dem Benutzer/Installateur eine große Anzahl neuer Eigenschaften zur Verfügung steht.
1.2 GRUNDEIGENSCHAFTEN
Das MODBUS-Kommunikationssystem ermöglicht die Master/Slave-Implementierung unter Geräten, die eine physische
Verbindung teilen. Was die Pumpe betrifft, ist die physikalische Verbindung durch einen seriellen Halbduplex-Layer RS-
485 gegeben. Diese Wahl wurde aufgrund der großen Verbreitung und Robustheit dieser Verbindung getroffen. Die
Pumpe ist für den Betrieb in einem Single-Master-System ausgelegt. In diesem System haben Master- und Slave-Geräte
eindeutige Rollen, und es ist wichtig, diese genau zu verstehen, um das System korrekt implementieren zu können.
Master-Gerät
Gerät, das den Datenaustausch im Bus steuert und ggf. Tätigkeiten zur Koordination unter den verschiedenen
Slaves (z.B. SPS Speicherprogrammierbare Steuerung, SCADA usw.) implementiert.
Slave-Gerät
Gerät, das an den Bus angeschlossen ist und auf Anforderungen des Masters reagiert, entweder indem es
Informationen liefert oder die vom Master geforderten Aufgaben erfüllt.
2FRONTBEDIENEINHEIT
An der Frontbedieneinheit der Pumpe befinden sich verschiedene Tasten und Anzeigen, über die der Zustand der
Pumpe angezeigt und gesteuert wird. Diese sind auf Abbildung 1 dargestellt.

2.1 STATUSANZEIGEN
Auf der großen LCD-Anzeigetafel werden grundlegende Angaben zum Zustand der Pumpe angezeigt, inbegriffen die
jeweilige Betriebsart, der Sollwert sowie Warnungen oder Störungen.
2.2 STEUERTASTEN
Die Bedieneinheit der Pumpe ist mit vier Steuertasten ausgerüstet. Die Funktionen dieser Tasten werden im
Gebrauchshandbuch der Pumpe näher erläutert.

3.1.1 RS-485 STANDARD-VERBINDUNGEN
Die Control Basic Plus Pump implementiert ANSI/TIA/EIA-485 Standard-Kommunikationen, die auch mit der
Bezeichnung RS-485 bekannt sind. Einige Hersteller vertauschen den „A“- und den „B“-Anschluss, was zu Verwirrung
führen kann. Bei der Pumpe ist das nicht der Fall. Erinnern Sie sich aber daran, sollten Sie die Pumpe an MODBUS
Geräte anderer Hersteller anschließen.

Einige Hersteller vertauschen den A- und den B-Anschluss, was zu Verwirrung führen kann. Bei diesem Gerät entspricht
T+R+ dem Anschluss B, während T-R- dem Anschluss A entspricht, die folgende Pinbelegung entspricht dem weiblichen
Verbinder (der am Pool Basic Double/Control Basic/Optima Plus installierte Verbinder).
Die empfohlene Verkabelung für eine MODBUS-RTU-Kommunikation basiert auf einer linearen Struktur, mit aktivem
Busabschluss an beiden Enden. Es ist daher möglich, Geräte während des Betriebs an- bzw. abzukoppeln, ohne dass
die anderen Geräte beeinflusst werden. Der Draht ist gemäß EN 50170 zu verdrillen und abzuschirmen.
Ausgehend von den vom Gerät unterstützten Übertragungsraten ist bei Einsatz ohne Repeater eine Kabellänge von
1.200 m zulässig. Bei Einsatz von Repeatern ist - bei standardgemäßer Installation - eine Länge von bis zu 10 km
möglich.
Für die in einem System RS-485 eingesetzten symmetrischen Paare ist ein Wellenwiderstand mit einem Wert von über
100 Ohm zu empfehlen, insbesondere bei Baud-Raten von 19200 und höher.

3.1.2 BUSISOLIERUNG UND ABSCHLUSSWIDERSTAND
Wenn der Benutzer Zugang zum Kommunikationsbus hat, sollte dieser doppelt isoliert sein. Im Allgemeinen hängt die
Tatsache, ob der Bus für den Benutzer zugänglich ist, von der jeweiligen Installation ab. In der physikalischen Bus-
Ebene der Pumpe ist eine Sicherheitsisolierung implementiert. Außerdem wird aus Sicherheitsgründen empfohlen, dass
diese Isolierung auch bei den anderen Geräten, die an diesem Bus teilnehmen, implementiert wird. Zusätzlich steigert
der Einsatz isolierter Busteilnehmer die Zuverlässigkeit der Ausrüstung, macht diese gegenüber elektromagnetischen
Interferenzen unempfindlicher, verlängert ihre Lebensdauer und verleiht ihr mehr Stabilität über den gesamten
Temperaturbereich. Wenn ein einzelnes oder mehrere Geräte an einer physikalischen Busverbindung teilnehmen, wird
der Einsatz von Abschlusswiderständen an den Bus-Enden empfohlen, besonders bei großen Kabellängen oder hohen
Datenübertragungsraten. Der Einsatz eines Abschlusswiderstandes soll verhindern, dass ein RF-Signal vom Bus-Ende
reflektiert wird und Interferenzen verursacht. Der Abschlusswiderstand muss an beiden Bus-Enden vorhanden und
parallel angeschlossen sein (siehe Abbildung unten). Ein typischer Wert für diesen Widerstand ist 120Ω, 0.5W. Der Wert
des Abschlusswiderstandes muss an beiden Enden derselbe sein. Im Diagramm sind die Abschlusswiderstände mit
„R_T“ gekennzeichnet.

4MODBUS-FUNKTIONEN
4.1 UNTERSTÜTZTE FUNKTIONEN
Bei der Ausgabe der MODBUS-Befehle sind Vorsicht und Sorgfalt geboten. Es ist sicherzustellen, dass die
benutzte Funktion korrekt ist.
REGISTER-ZUGRIFFSMODUS
Funktionen im Register-Zugriffsmodus sind gemäß dem MODBUS-RTU-Standard implementiert, der unter
http://www.modbus.org/docs/Modbus_Application_Protocol_V1_1b3.pdf beschrieben wird. Im Allgemeinen sind Register
vorzeichenlos 16 bit codiert.

4.2 AUSNAHMENACHRICHTEN
Ausnahmenachrichten sind gemäß dem MODBUS-RTU-Standard implementiert, der im Kapitel MODBUS exeption
responses (Ausnahmenachrichten) http://www.modbus.org/docs/Modbus_Application_Protocol_V1_1b3.pdf beschrieben
wird.
Die implementierten Ausnahmen sind folgende: 1,2,3 und 6.
5 BESCHREIBUNG UND KONFIGURATION DES GERÄTS
5.1 ALLGEMEINE BESCHREIBUNG
Bei Verwendung der MODBUS-Befehle besteht die Möglichkeit, den Sollwert der Pumpe zu ändern, außerdem können
verschiedene Status- und Diagnoseangaben abgerufen werden.
Bei gleichzeitigem Eingang von Anforderungen über MODBUS und über die Bedieneinheit hat die Bedieneinheit den
Vorrang. Bestimmte Parameter können nur gelesen werden.
Der Bediener ist dafür verantwortlich, das sichergestellt wird, ob die gesendeten Werte mit den Anwendung
übereinstimmen.
In vorliegendem Handbuch sind die Zahlen im Hexadezimalformat angegeben, d.h. 0xZZ, wo ZZ die Zahl darstellt.

5.2 MASCHINEN-ZUSTANDSDIAGRAMM
Wenn sich die Pumpe einschaltet, nimmt sie ihren Betrieb im normalen Betriebsmodus auf. Der vorliegende Zustand
wird auf der LCD-Anzeigetafel angezeigt. Die Pumpe hat vier Betriebsarten: Normalbetrieb, Kalibrierung,
Programmierung und Protokollierung. Die Pumpe kann von jeder dieser Betriebsarten in eine andere übergehen. Dies ist
auf Abbildung 5 dargestellt.

5.3 KONFIGURATION DER PUMPE
5.3.1 ADRESSE
Die Adresse der Pumpe im Bus wird an der Pumpe eingestellt (0x00 nur Lesen im Holding Register).

Der werkseitige Voreinstellungswert ist 0x01. Wenn aber mehr als eine Pumpe implementiert werden sollen, dürfen die
beiden ID_Adressen nicht übereinstimmen. Dieses Problem kann durch die Änderung am Gerät gelöst werden.
5.3.2 KOMMUNIKATIONS-EINRICHTUNG
Es besteht die Möglichkeit, die Kommunikation zu aktivieren bzw. zu deaktivieren, die Watchdog-Konfiguration und
Watchdog-Zeit, die Adresse, die Parität und Baudrate zu ändern.
5.4 WATCHDOG TIME OUT
Der Watchdog ist ein in der Pumpe implementierter Timer, der kontrolliert, ob die Kommunikation im Bus
aufrechterhalten wird. Wenn die Kommunikation mit der Pumpe für eine Dauer unterbrochen wird, die über der am
Watchdog eingestellten Zeit liegt (Watchdog_time), führt die Pumpe die Tätigkeit aus, die unter wdg config., wdg alarm,
hardware reset, com. reset und stop dosage gewählt wurde.

5.4.1 WATCHDOG TIME
Die Watchdog-Auslösezeit wird im Holding Register 0x10 festgelegt. Die Zeit wird in Sekunden eingestellt. Bei einem
Wert von 0 ist der Watchdog deaktiviert, und das ist der vorgegebene Wert.
Zum Aktivieren der Watchdog-Funktion muss die watchdog_time auf einen Wert ungleich 0 gesetzt werden bzw. es ist
ein Wert von der Pumpe zu wählen.
Beispiel: Die Watchdog-Auslösezeit auf 30 Sek. setzen. Folgende Meldung senden:

01 die Adresse des Slave ist.
10 die benutzte Funktion ist. Write Multiple Registers (Schreiben mehrfacher Register).
00 10 ist die Adresse des Holding Registers, das geschrieben werden soll.
00 01 ist die Nummer des zu schreibenden Registers, in diesem Falle 1.
02 ist die Anzahl der zu sendenden Bytes.
00 1E ist der zu sendende Wert, 30 in Dezimal.
24 C8 ist die CRC.
Jetzt ist die watchdog_time auf 30 Sekunden eingestellt. Wenn jetzt zwei korrekt formulierte Meldungen in
weniger als 30 Sekunden gelesen werden, inbegriffen auch die, die sich nicht speziell an die Pumpe richten,
erfolgt das Rücksetzen des Watchdogs.
6STEUERUNG DER PUMPE
6.1 EINSTELLEN DES SOLLWERTES
Die Wahl des aktiven Sollwerts erfolgt mithilfe des Holding Registers (0x23 Set-Point pH - 0x24 Set-Point ORP). Werte
außerhalb des zulässigen Bereichs werden nicht angewendet. Auf einen solchen Befehl erscheint der Ausnahme-Code
0x03 (unzulässiger Datenwert).
7ÜBERWACHEN DES PUMPEN-ZUSTANDS
7.1 ERFASSEN DER PUMPEN-BETRIEBSART
Die vorliegende Betriebsart der Pumpe wird durch zwei Bits im Input Register 0x00 angezeigt, Bits 1 und 3. Die
Betriebsart wird durch die Art ihrer Kombination angegeben. Die Kombinationen und ihre Bedeutung sind der
nachstehenden Tabelle zu entnehmen.

8WARNUNGEN UND ALARME
Die Pumpe erfasst die folgenden Zustände und gibt Alarm:
1. Niedriger Stand der Chemikalie. Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „Level“ (Stand) angegeben.
2. OFA Alarm (Zeit>70%). Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „OFA Alarm“ angegeben.
3. OFA Alarm (Zeit=100%). Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „OFA Stop“ angegeben.
4. Alarm Fördermenge. Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „Flow“ (Durchfluss) angegeben.
5. Systemfehler. Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „Parameter error“ (Parameterfehler) angegeben.
6. Watchdog-Alarm Kommunikation. Auf der LCD-Anzeige als „Alarm WDG“ angegeben.
Die Pumpe liefert den augenblicklichen Stand für all diese Alarme, dazu auch eine begrenzte Anzahl historischer Daten.

8.2 LESEN HISTORISCHER ALARMANGABEN
Wenn eine Warnung oder eine Störung eintritt, wird dieses Ereignis unter den historischen Alarmen gespeichert. In
einigen Fällen, wenn die Situation den Betrieb der Pumpe noch zulässt. In einigen Situationen wird die Pumpe anhalten
und eine Störung melden.
Es besteht die Möglichkeit zu kontrollieren, welche Alarme seit der letzten Alarm-Rücksetzung aktiviert wurden.
Der Zugriff auf diese Angaben kann auch im Holding Register 0x20 erfolgen.
