1INTRODUCTION TO MODBUS AND PRODUCT
Thank you very much for purchasing our Control Basic Plus pump with MODBUS-RTU features. This manual is intended
for the professional installer; if you are not, please consult your official distributor. MODBUS is an open field bus
successfully used throughout the world to connect field devices to a main controller. This is the reason why MODBUS
has been our choice to offer to our customers and partners an automated solution, easy to integrate not only with our
brand products but also with a vast collection of third party components and controllers. MODBUS, MODBUS-RTU and

1.1 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The Control Basic Plus pump implements MODBUS-RTU as a control-communications feature that allows operation and
supervision in a MODBUS automation environment. Preventive maintenance and fault analysis is also possible thanks to
the implementation of internal registers in the pump with the more relevant operational and error events. When the pump
is installed, you are not forced to connect it to a MODBUS system, if you do not aim to control or supervise it externally.
The pump can run in local mode, as traditionally done, without using the MODBUS layer. However, we expect that the
implementation of MODBUS-RTU in the pump will open to our advanced customers and partners a wide range of new
opportunities and implementation scenarios, thanks to the simplicity and flexibility of the MODBUS-RTU layer. Using a
MODBUS-RTU message, the pump can start & stop by set-point report errors and so on, giving to the user/installer a
wide range of new features.
1.2 BASIC CHARACTERISTICS
The MODBUS communication system provides a Master/Slave implementation among devices sharing a physical
connection. For the pump, the physical connection is a RS-485 half-duplex serial layer, which has been chosen among
other options due to its wide implementation and ruggedness. The pump is designed to run in a single-master system. In
this implementation, Master and Slave devices have clear roles, and it is crucial to clear understand these roles for
proper system implementation.
Master Device
Device that controls the data exchange in the bus and, if necessary, implements co-ordination tasks among
different slaves (i.e. PLC Programmable Logic Controller, SCADA, etc.).
Slave Device
Devices connected to the bus that responds to the requests from the master, either reporting information or
executing tasks as per Master request.
2FRONT PANEL CONTROLS
The pump's front panel contains various buttons and indicators, to indicate and control the state of the pump. These are
shown in Image 1.

2.1 STATUS INDICATORS
The large LCD displays key information about the status of the pump, including current mode of operation, set-point and
warnings or faults.
2.2 CONTROL BUTTONS
There are four control buttons on the pump’s front panel. The function of all these buttons is explained in detail in the
pump’s User Manual.
3CONNECTIONS
3.1 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
3.1.1 RS-485 STANDARD CONNECTIONS
The Control Basic Plus pump implements ANSI/TIA/EIA-485 standard communications, also known as RS-485. Some
manufacturers swap the “A” and “B” connections, which may cause confusion, but this is not the case with the pump.
Keep this in mind when connecting the pump to MODBUS appliances from other companies.

Some manufacturers swap the A and B connections" which may cause confusion, in this device B is the T+R+ and the A
is the T-R-, the following pinout correspond to the female connector (the connector installed on the Pool Basic
Double/Control Basic/Optima Plus)
The recommended wiring for a MODBUS-RTU communication is based on a linear structure, active bus with termination
at both ends. It is possible to couple and uncouple devices during operation without affecting other devices. The wire
shall be twisted and shielded according to EN 50170.
The values of transmission rate supported by the device allows maximum cable length of 1,200 m without repeaters, or
up to 10 km using repeaters, when installed according to the standard.
For the balanced pairs used in an RS-485 system, a Characteristic Impedance with a value higher than 100 Ohms is
preferred, especially for 19200 and higher baud rates.

3.1.2 BUS ISOLATION AND TERMINATION RESISTORS
If the communication bus is accessible by the user, it shall be double insulated. In general, the accessibility of the bus to
users will depend on each installation; safety isolation has been implemented in the pump’s physical bus layer.
Moreover, for safety purposes, it is recommended to ensure that other devices sharing this bus also implements this
insulation. Additionally, the use of bus insulated devices also increases the equipment reliability, larger immunity to
electromagnetic interference, longer life, and more stability over the range of temperatures. Whenever single or multiple
devices are sharing a bus physical connection, it is recommended to use terminating resistors at the ends of the bus,
even more so when use large cable length or high speed data rates. The terminating resistor is used to prevent an RF
signal from being reflected back from the end, causing interference. The terminating resistor must be in both ends of the
bus, connected in parallel (as shown in the image below). A typical value of this resistance is 120Ω, 0.5W. The value of
the resistor must be the same in both ends. The terminating resistors are labelled “R_T” in the diagram.

4MODBUS FUNCTIONS
4.1 FUNCTIONS SUPPORTED
Please, be careful when issuing MODBUS commands, and make sure that the function used is correct.
REGISTER ACCESS MODE
Functions in register access mode are implemented according to the MODBUS-RTU standard described in
http://www.modbus.org/docs/Modbus_Application_Protocol_V1_1b3.pdf In general registers are unsigned 16 bit coded.

Exception responses are implemented according to the MODBUS-RTU standard, described in the chapter MODBUS

The exceptions implemented are: 1,2,3 and 6.
5DEVICE DESCRIPTION AND CONFIGURATION
5.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Using MODBUS commands, the pump’s set-point can be changed, also, various state and diagnostic information can be
retrieved.
When a simultaneous request is made through MODBUS, the front panel has the priority. It's possible only to read
certain parameters.
It is the operator’s responsibility to check that values sent are consistent with the application.
In this manual, the numbers in hexadecimal have been represented with the format 0xZZ, where ZZ is the number.

5.2 STATE MACHINE DIAGRAM
When the pump powers on, it will resume operation in normal operating mode. The current state is shown on the LCD.
The pump has four modes of operation: Normal Operating, Calibration, Programming and Logging. The pump can move
from any one state to another. Image 5 shows this.

5.3 CONFIGURING THE PUMP
5.3.1 ADDRESS
The address of the pump in the bus is set on the pump (0x00 only read in holding register).
ID_Address:
Address of the pump in the bus.
Factory setting:
0x01
The factory default is 0x01. However if more than one pump wants to be implemented both ID_Address values must not
match. This situation can be avoided by changing from device.
5.3.2 COMMUNICATIONS SETUP
It's possible enabling or disabling the communication, change the watchdog configuration, watchdog time, address, parity
and baudrate.
5.4 WATCHDOG TIME OUT
The watchdog is a timer implemented in the pump to check if the communications in the bus is still alive. When the pump
loses communication for a time greater than the watchdog_time, the pump perform the action selected in: wdg config.,
wdg alarm, hardware reset, com. reset and stop dosage.

5.4.1 WATCHDOG TIME
The watchdog triggering time is defined in the holding register 0x10. This time is set in seconds. A value of 0 means that
the watchdog is disabled, and this is the default value.
To enable the watchdog feature, set the watchdog_time to a value different from 0 or select a value from the pump.
Example: Set watchdog triggering time to 30s Transmit Message:

Where:
01 is the slave address.
10 is the function used. Write Multiple Registers.
00 10 is the address of the holding register to be written.
00 01 is the number of registers to be written, 1 in this case.
02 is the number of bytes to be sent
00 1E is the value to be sent, 30 in decimal.
24 C8 is the CRC.
Now, the watchdog_time is set to 30s. Therefore, whenever two properly constructed messages are read in less
than 30s, including those not specifically addressed to the pump, the watchdog is reset.
6CONTROLLING THE PUMP
6.1 SET-POINT SETTING
The active set-point is selected using holding register (0x23 Set-Point pH - 0x24 Set-Point ORP). Any value outside the
acceptable range is not applied and the exception code 0x03 (illegal data value) will be answered to the command.
7MONITORING PUMP STATUS
7.1 READING PUMP MODE
The current pump mode is indicated using two bits in input register 0x00, bits 1 and 3. In combination, they specify the
mode. The following table defines the combinations and their meaning.

There are a number of other pieces of status information. They are summarised in the following table.

8WARNINGS AND ALARMS
The pump will detect and provide alarms for the following reasons:
1. Low level chemical product. Displayed on LCD as “Level”
2. OFA alarm (time>70%). Displayed on LCD as “OFA Alarm”
3. OFA alarm (time=100%). Displayed on LCD as “OFA Stop”
4. Flow rate alarm. Displayed on LCD as "Flow"
5. System error. Displayed on LCD as “Parameter error”
6. Communication Watchdog alarm. Displayed on LCD as “Alarm WDG"
The pump makes the current status of each of these available, as well as providing a limited set of historical data.
8.1 READING CURRENT WARNING/ALARM STATUS
Each of these is also accessible in input register 0x01.

8.2 READING HISTORICAL ALARM DATA
When a warning or fault happens, this event will be recorded in historical alarms. In some cases when the situation still
allows the pump to run. In some situations, the pump will stop and gives a fault.
It is possible to check which alarms have been activated since the last alarm reset.
Each of these is also accessible in holding register 0x20
