Meet the ATARI SMl24 Monitor
Ygyr n9y SMt24 Monitor supports your ATART ST Compurer wirh
state-of-the-art, high-resolution, monochrome video display. lts
taslelully designed housing encases many special and'advanced
leatures: for exampte, the ability to display high_resolution bit-
map graphics with very low geomelric distortion levels. The end
result is performance: lhe SM124 delivers clean, sharp images
over its entire display screen.

Using both hands, lift the monitor and the loam packing out ol
the box.
Place the monitor on a lirm, level surlace and remove the
packing materials.
Packed along with your SM'I24 Monitor you should lind this
owner's manual.

Connecting the Monitor
Place your monitor securely on a firm, level surlace. position it to
the side, above, or in back of your computer, whichever alfords
you lhe most viewing comlort.
\lurrning: Allhough connecting and operating your new monitor
is not diflicult, you musl lake care to use il correclly and salely.
As with any electrical appliance, cerlain hazards miy present -
themselves if the monitor is not properly insta ed anb main-
tained. Please read lhe seclion, ,,Care and Salety,,Delore
connecting the monitor to your computer system.

To connect the monitor lo your computer system, lollow these
sleps:
1. Swilch off all componenls ol your ATARI ST Computer system.
2. One end ol lhe monitor's video cable is permanen y fixed to
the back panel of the monitor. Plug the other end o, the cable
inlo the round conneclor marked Monilor on lhe back of
your ST Compuler.
3. Switch on your monilor, then your computer.
Controlling and Adjusting the Monitor
The monitor's lhree control knobs are located wilhin easy
reach on the right side panel. They are, lrom bottom to top,
the On/Wlume, Contrast, and Brightness controls.

The On/Volume Control
To switch the monitor on, lurn lhis knob clockwise. Whenever
power to the monitor is switched on, the green light on the lront
panel is illuminated. To switch the monitor olf, turn the knob
counterclockwise.
This knob also controls the volume level. Your monitor is
equipped with a small speaker located on the lelt side panel. As
you turn the knob lurther clockwise, the volume level increases;
as you turn il counterclockwise, lhe volume level decreases. Your
compuler is capable ol sending audio signals to the monilor, and
many programs and games will make use of the speaker.
The Contrast and Brightness Controls
The other two knobs control the contrast and brightness ol the
monitor's display
Rotating the contrast knob increases or decreases the degree
of ditference between the lighter and lhe darker elements of
the display
Rotating the brightness knob increases or decreases the overall
brighlness ol the display
With text displayed on the monilor's screen, turn the brightness
control clockwise as far as it will go. The screen will appear
uncomforlably bright. Now turn the brightness down to a
comlortable level. Next, adjust the contrast knob unlil the
texl is clear and distinct.

Thoubleshooting
Your SM124 Monitor has been designed to provide years of
reliable high performance. But as with any'electricil appliance,
at limes things can go wrong. lf you expeiience problerhs that
you think may be serious, the best course ls to tike your monitor
to an authorized ATARI Service Center.
These.are some typical monitor problems, and the steps you
should take to resolve them:

Care and Safety
To ensure lull performance and safe operalion ol your SM124
Monitor, lollow these simple guidelines:
o The recessed vents in the monitor's housing help to cool it
while operaling. Never obstruct the airflow through these
openings by placing the monitor on a bed or sofa. Never
place the monitor in a bookcase or other tightly enclosed
area unless adequate ventilation is provided.
o Do not place spillable liquids on top or near the monitor (and
do not operale the monitor near water.) Spilling liquids inlo
the ventilation slots will seriously damage your monilor. lf such
an accident does occur, immediately switch lhe monitor off,
unplug il, then contact an authorized ATARI Service Center.
a To avoid electric shock, never poke any obiect through the
ventilation openings, and never open the monitor's housing
yoursell. Cautlbn children not to poke anything through the
vents.
a Always grasp the solid plastic plug, not the cord itself or the
plug's prongs, when plugging in or unplugging the monitor.
a Do nol leave the monitor switched on when not in use.
Unplug your monitor if you do not intend to use it lor an
exlended period ol time.
a Keep the monitor out of direct sunlight and do not expose
il lo extreme temperalures or high humidity
a Keep the monitor squarely on a lirm, level surtace.
o Avoid scratching lhe screen's surface. Keep hard, sharp
objects (such as rings and other jewelry) away from the
monilor's screen. And never sel the monitor face down.
a Clean the screen with a solt, clean, sligh y damp (not wet),
lint-free cloth. Do not use spray cleaners as their spray may
inadvertently reach the ventilation opening.
a lf strange smells or sounds come lrom the monitor, switch
it off, unplug it, and contact an authorized ATARI Service
Cenler.
