Meet the ATARI SM124 Monitor
Your new SM124 Monitor supports your ATARI ST Computer with
state-of-the-art, high-resolution, monochrome video display. Its
tastefully designed housing encases many special and advanced
features: for example, the ability to display high-resolution bit-
map graphics with very low geometric distortion levels. The end
result is performance: the SM124 delivers clean, sharp images
over its entire display screen.
Unpacking Instructions
1.Using both hands, lift the monitor and the foam packing out of
the box.
2. Place the monitor on afirm, level surface and remove the
packing materials.
3. Packed along with your SMI24 Monitor you should find this
owner’s manual.
Note: Save all packing materials for use in storing or transporting
your monitor.
Connecting the Monitor
Place your monitor securely on afirm, level surface. Position it to
the side, above, or in back of your computer, whichever affords
you the most viewing comfort.
Warning: Although connecting and operating your new monitor
is not difficult, you must take care to use it correctly and safely.
As with any electrical appliance, certain hazards may present
themselves if the monitor is not properly installed and main-
tained. Please read the section, “Care and Safety," before
connecting the monitor to your computer system.
1

To connect the monitor to your computer system, follow these
steps:
1.Switch off all components of your ATARI ST Computer system.
2. One end of the monitor’s video cable is permanently fixed to
the back panel of the monitor. Plug the other end of the cable
into the round connector marked Monitor on the back of
your ST Computer.
3. Switch on your monitor, then your computer.
Controlling and Adjusting the Monitor
The monitor’s three control knobs are located within easy
reach on the right side panel. They are, from bottom to top,
the On/\ADlume, Contrast, and Brightness controls.
2

The On/Volume Control
To switch the monitor on, turn this knob clockwise. Whenever
power to the monitor is switched on, the green light on the front
panel is illuminated. To switch the monitor off, turn the knob
counterclockwise.
This knob also controls the volume level. Your monitor is
equipped with asmall speaker located on the left side panel. As
you turn the knob further clockwise, the volume level increases;
as you turn it counterclockwise, the volume level decreases. Your
computer is capable of sending audio signals to the monitor, and
many programs and games will make use of the speaker.
The Contrast and Brightness Controls
The other two knobs control the contrast and brightness of the
monitor’s display.
Rotating the contrast knob increases or decreases the degree
of difference between the lighter and the darker elements of
the display.
Rotating the brightness knob increases or decreases the overall
brightness of the display.
With text displayed on the monitor’s screen, turn the brightness
control clockwise as far as it will go. The screen will appear
uncomfortably bright. Now turn the brightness down to a
comfortable level. Next, adjust the contrast knob until the
text is clear and distinct.

Troubleshooting
Your SM124 Monitor has been designed to provide years of
reliable high performance. But as with any electrical appliance,
at times things can go wrong. If you experience problems that
you think may be serious, the best course is to take your monitor
to an authorized ATARI Service Center.
These are some typical monitor problems, and the steps you
should take to resolve them:
Problem Solution
No picture. (1) Power is not switched on.
(2) Power cord is not plugged in
securely. Check the outlet connec-
tion.
(3) Video cable is not attached pro-
perly to your computer. Check the
connection.
(4) Brightness control is turned
down all the way. Adjust the
,brightness.
(5) Contrast control is turned down
all the way. Adjust the contrast.
Display is faulty: it rolls
or vibrates; images are
distorted; images appear
blurred.
Your monitor or computer needs
internal repair or adjustment.
Contact an authorized ATARI
Service Center.
Note: This unit contains no user-serviceable parts. Always refer
service to an authorized Service Center. If you remove the

Care and Safety
To ensure full performance and safe operation of your SM124
Monitor, follow these simple guidelines:
•The recessed vents in the monitor’s housing help to cool it
while operating. Never obstruct the airflow through these
openings by placing the monitor on abed or sofa. Never
place the monitor in abookcase or other tightly enclosed
area unless adequate ventilation is provided.
•Do not place spillable liquids' on top or near the monitor (and
do not operate the monitor near water.) Spilling liquids into
the ventilation slots will seriously damage your monitor. If such
an accident does occur, immediately switch the monitor off,
unplug it, then contact an authorized ATARI Service Center.
•To avoid electric shock, never poke any object through the
ventilation openings, and never open the monitor’s housing
yourself. Caution children not to poke anything through the
vents.
•Always grasp the solid plastic plug, not the cord itseff or the
plug’s prongs, when plugging in or unplugging the monitor.
•Do not leave the monitor switched on when not in use.
Unplug your monitor if you do not intend to use it for an
extended period of time.
•Keep the monitor out of direct sunlight and do not expose
it to extreme temperatures or high humidity.
•Keep the monitor squarely on afirm, level surface.
•Avoid scratching the screen’s surface. Keep hard, sharp
objects (such as rings and other jewelry) away from the
monitor’s screen. And never set the monitor face down.
•Clean the screen with asoft, clean, slightly damp (not wet),
lint-free cloth. Do not use spray cleaners as their spray may
inadvertently reach the ventilation opening.
•If strange smells or sounds come from the monitor, switch
it off, unplug it, and contact an authorized ATARI Service
Center.
