impo rtant po ints concerning the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If the nee d le is at the bottom of the gauge, the engine oil has not

Normal range
The e ng ine has reached operating tempe rature w hen the needle
moves into the center of t he ga uge unde r norma l dr iving condi ti ons.
The nee dle may move higher on the gauge with heavier engine load at
hig h outs ide temperatures . This is not a ca use for concern as long as
the warning light 't'.:1":in the display does not flash.

If the need le is well in the upper area of the gauge, the engine oil
t empe rat ure is too hig h. Stop the vehicle, switch the engine off and
allow it to cool. If the warn ing light comes on again after dr iving a
short distance, contact an authorize d Audi dea le r. •

Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revolutions
per minutes) .
You should shift to the next lowest gear when the speed is below
1500 RPM. The beg inning of the red zone in t he t achometer indicates
the maximum permissible engine speed for all gears once the engine
has been broken in and whe n it is warm. You shou ld shift to the next
higher gear, switch the R tronic sport mode off or remove your foot
from the accelerator pedal before reaching this area in the gauge.
0 Note
The need le in the tachometer =>page 8, fig. 2 @ may only be in the
red area of the gauge for a short t ime or the engine could be
damaged. The location where t he red zone begins varies depending
on the eng ine. •

Engine cold
As long as the need le remains at t he left en d of t he gauge, the engine
st ill has not reached its operating tempe rature. Avoid hig h eng ine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throttle.
Normal temperature
When the eng ine has reached its operat ing tempe rature, t he need le
w ill move into the middle of the gauge and rema in there . If the
engine is wo rking ha rd at high outsi d e tem peratu res, the needle may
t ur n further to t he rig ht. This is no cause fo r concern as long as the J_
wa rning light in t he instr ument cluster does not illuminate.
Warning light -L
When the _t_ warning light sta rts to flas h, this ca n mean one of two
things: either the coolant temperature is too high, or the coolant
level is too low ~ page 33.
If t he nee d le is well o n t he rig ht side of t he gau ge, t he coo lan t

,& WARNING
• Always observe the warning in ~ page 183 , "Working in the
engine compartment " before opening the engine compartment
lid and checking the engine coolant level.
• Never open the engine compartment lid if you see or hear
steam , or if you see engine coolant dripping from the engine
compartment. You could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear or see any steam or engine coolant.
0 Note
• Mounting additiona l lights or accessories in front of the air inlets
re du ces t he cooling effe ct of th e radi at or . At high out side t em pera-

could reduce the coo ling effect and t he e ng ine could then overheat .
Ask your author ized Audi dealer for assistance. •
Fuel gauge
The fu el ga uge wo rks on ly when t he igni t ion is on. W hen t he needle
reaches the red a rea, the warning light in the instrument cluster will
illuminate ~ page 34 fl). This means you have approx imately
2.6 gallons (10 liters) of fue l left in the t ank . Time to refuel!
The total tank capac ity of yo ur vehicle is listed in Technical data
~page 244 .
0 Note
Never ru n t he t ank comple t ely dr y! An irreg ular sup ply of fuel can
