Passworddialog,whichopenswhentheproductisaccessedforthersttime.
Topreventnetworkeavesdropping,therootpasswordcanbesetviaanencryptedHTTPSconnection,whichrequiresanHTTPS
certicate.HTTPS(HypertextTransferProtocoloverSSL)isaprotocolusedtoencrypttrafcbetweenwebbrowsersandservers.The

TheAxisproductprovidesseveralaudioandvideostreamformats.Yourrequirementsandthepropertiesofyournetworkwill
determinethetypeyouuse.
TheliveviewwindowintheproductprovidesaccesstoH.264andotionJPEGvideostreams,audiostreamsandtothelistofavailable
streamproles.Otherapplicationsandclientscanaccessvideoandaudiostreamsdirectly,withoutgoingviatheliveviewwindow.
AboutH.264format
H.264can,withoutcompromisingimagequality,reducethesizeofadigitalvideolebymorethan80%comparedwiththeotion
JPEGformatandasmuchas50%morethanthePEG-4standard.Thismeansthatmuchlessnetworkbandwidthandstoragespace
arerequiredforavideole.Orseenanotherway,muchhighervideoqualitycanbeachievedforagivenbitrate.
Decidingwhichcombinationofprotocolsandmethodstousedependsonyourviewingrequirements,andonthepropertiesof
yournetwork.TheavailableoptionsinAXISediaControlare:
UnicastRTPThisunicastmethod(RTPoverUDP)isused
forliveunicastvideo,especiallywhenitis
importanttohaveanup-to-datevideostream,
evenifsomeframesaredropped.
RTPoverRTSPThisunicastmethod(RTPtunneledoverRTSP)
isusefulasitisrelativelysimpletocongure
rewallstoallowRTSPtrafc.
RTPoverRTSPoverHTTPThisunicastmethodcanbeusedtotraverse
rewalls.Firewallsarecommonlyconguredto
allowtheHTTPprotocol,thusallowingRTPto
betunneled.
Unicastingisusedforvideo-on-demand
transmissionsothatthereisnovideotrafc
onthenetworkuntilaclientconnectsand
requeststhestream.
Notethatthereareamaximumof10
simultaneousunicastconnections.
ulticastRTPThismethod(RTPoverUDP)shouldbeusedforlivemulticastvideo.Thevideostreamisalways
up-to-date,evenifsomeframesaredropped.
ulticastingprovidesthemostefcientusageofbandwidthwhentherearelargenumbersof
clientsviewingsimultaneously.Amulticastcannothowever,passanetworkrouterunlessthe
routerisconguredtoallowthis.ItisnotpossibletomulticastovertheInternet,forexample.
Notealsothatallmulticastviewerscountasoneunicastviewerinthemaximumtotalof10
simultaneousconnections.
AXISediaControlnegotiateswiththeAxisproducttodeterminethetransportprotocoltouse.Theorderofpriority,listedinthe
ACControlPanel,canbechangedandtheoptionsdisabled,tosuitspecicrequirements.

H.264islicensedtechnology.TheAxisproductincludesoneH.264viewingclientlicense.Installingadditionalunlicensed
copiesoftheclientisprohibited.Topurchaseadditionallicenses,contactyourAxisreseller.
AboutMJPEGformat
ThisformatusesstandardJPEGstillimagesforthevideostream.Theseimagesarethendisplayedandupdatedataratesufcient
tocreateastreamthatshowsconstantlyupdatedmotion.
TheotionJPEGstreamusesconsiderableamountsofbandwidth,butprovidesexcellentimagequalityandaccesstoeveryimage
containedinthestream.TherecommendedmethodofaccessingotionJPEGlivevideofromtheAxisproductistousetheAXIS
ediaControlinInternetExplorerinWindows.

betweentwoI-frames.
EqualvaluesforGOPlengthandframerateresultinoneGOPpersecond.AhigherGOPlengthvalueresultsinmoresmall-sized
P-framesandfewerlarge-sizedI-frameswhilekeepingthesameframerate.Inotherwords,ahighGOP-lengthvaluesaves
bandwidth,butthevideoqualitymaydecrease.AlowGOP-lengthvalueincreasesthevideoqualitybutrequiresmorebandwidth.

•Main:TheainproleusesCABACandprovidesabettercompressionwithmaintainedvideoquality.Itrequiresalarger
amountofprocessingpowertodecodethantheBaselineprole.
•High:TheHighproleprovidesahighercompressionthanbothainandBaselineproles,butrequiresmoreprocessing
powertodecode.Highprolesupports8x8blocks,whichreducesthebitratefurthercomparedtotheainprole.
Aboutbitratecontrol
Bitratecontrolisusefultomakesurethevideostreamingdoesnottakeuptoomuchbandwidth.
Thebuilt-inbitratecontrolcanbecombinedwithZipstream,seeAboutZipstreamonpage15.Werecommendusingahighbitrate
limittoenablethefullpotentialofZipstream.
Aboutvariablebitrate
Variablebitrate(VBR)adjuststhebitrateaccordingtotheimagecomplexity.Whentheactivityinthesceneincreases,VBRadjusts
thebitrateaccordingtothecomplexity,usingupmorebandwidthforincreasedactivityinthescene,andlessforlowersceneactivity.
Variablebitrateissuitableifthereisasurplusinbandwidth,wheretheincreasedbitratemaynotbeanissue.
Aboutmaximumbitrate
Ifyouhavelimitedbandwidth,werecommendaximumbitrate(BR).BRallowsyoutosetatargetbitratetocontrolthe
bandwidthconsumption.Thetargetvaluelimitsthebitrate,butitmaintainsaexibilitytobeabletoprioritizeacontinuousvideo
stream.Consequently,theframeratemightneedtogodownandtheimagequalitymightdecrease.Topartlycompensateforthis,
youcanselectwhichvariableshallbeprioritized.Notsettingaprioritymeansthatframerateandimagequalityareequallyaffected.

intheH.264streambyremovingunnecessarydata,whichmakesitpossibletostreamhigherresolutions,reducestoragecost
orkeeprecordingsforalongertime.
Toreducetheaveragebitrate,Zipstreamreducesthebitrateinareasoftheimagethatarelessinterestingfromavideosurveillance
perspective,forexamplethebackground.Imagedetailsthatareimportantforforensicvideoanalysis,forexamplefacesand
licenseplates,areencodedwithahigherbitrate.
