BarcoProfile - ABS
foreign fiber detection on
O.E. spinning machines
Foreign fibers are a nightmare in a modern spinning plant. In
spite of any measures taken in the blow room and on the first
step draw frames, some foreign fibers are bound to slip through
to the O.E. spinning machine.
Being at the forefront of new technology to fight contamination in
yarn, BARCO is proud to introduce a new sensor for the detection
of foreign fibers in O.E. yarn : BarcoProfile-ABS.
The technology used in BarcoProfile-ABS is based on
measurement of light absorbed by the yarn. The ABS detector is
installed on the yarn withdrawal tube in the spinbox.
Installation is possible on O.E. spinning machines regardless of
the type of yarn clearer installed.
The ABS detector simply comes as an add-on, safeguarding the
customers previous investments in yarn clearers.

How does ABS work ?
BarcoProfile-ABS is installed on the yarn
withdrawal tube.
Based on a patented operating principle, the
ABS detector measures the quantity of light
absorbed by the yarn.
For that purpose, light emitting diodes and
photoreceivers are put on the outside of the
yarn withdrawal tube, part of which has been
made diffusely transparent. The part of the
withdrawal tube where textile technological
functions, such as yarn twist formation, are
accomplished, is not touched.
The receivers sense the total amount of light
present in the tube. Foreign fibers in the yarn
cause an increased light absorption. This
increase is measured by the detector.
Measurements are unaffected by external
conditions such as temperature, ambient light,
humidity, dust and fiber type.
Functionalities
- Correct detection of foreign fiber length. The
ABS detector looks at the yarn from all
angles. This concentric detection allows to
see the full length of the foreign fiber
resulting in accurate length determination
of the contamination. This, in turn, allows
very selective clearing, avoiding un-
necessary stops.
- On-line defect classification per rotor and per
machine.
- Easy setting of clearer limits based on length
and intensity of contamination.
- Detection of contaminated sliver cans,
preventing chains of contamination in the
yarn (swarms).
- Foreign fiber rotor lock in case too many
stops within a certain yarn length are
generated.
- Auto-diagnostics prevent production to
continue on a rotor with a defective sensor.

Integration with Corolab
or BarcoProfile
ABS works as stand alone (on machines
without clearers or machines with other than
BARCO clearers) and also in conjunction with
BarcoProfile or Corolab. The functionality of this
clearer can be summarized as follows:
- Absolute optical control of the yarn diameter
- Classification of defects in an 8x8 matrix
- Continuous monitoring of yarn CV%
- Fast moiré detection (<2m)
- Detection of yarn count deviations
- Special channels for sliver faults and neps
- Real-time spectrogram, histogram and CVL-

Integration in the BARCO SYCOTEX system.
All BARCO and Loepfe detector systems and sensors can be integrated in BARCOs SYCOTEX plant wide monitoring system.
With SYCOTEX, the whole production process can be monitored starting from opening lines to draw frames, flyers, ring frames, OE machines,
winders and twisters. The SYCOTEX system also allows the connection of production machines equipped with other (non BARCO) yarn
quality detection or clearer systems.
This detection system is installed in the creel of draw
frames handling the first step drawing.
The purpose is to stop the draw frame if a contaminated
sliver is detected, so that the operator can eliminate the
contamination. This avoids that second step drawing and
spinning spreads the contamination over many meters of
yarn.
The YarnMaster 900 eliminates yarn defects as well as
foreign fibers and reports the events on-line according to
international standards, being :
- thick and thin places
- IPI values
- splices
- yarn count deviations
- imperfections
- foreign fibers
The Cotton Sorter RX-CS is a real time system for
detection and removal of contaminants in raw cotton. All
unwanted material that differs from the cotton throughput
will be detected by ultra-fast CCD cameras and removed
by a special pneumatic ejection unit.
RX-CS is easy to install in an existing opening line. The
system is placed in the pipeline system which transports
the cotton tufts from the bale opener. No extra handling of
the cotton is required.
The ABS detector is installed on the yarn withdrawal tube
in the spin box. ABS can be installed on O.E. machines
regardless the presence of whatever type of yarn clearer.
With ABS the detector simply comes as an add-on, re-
placing the original yarn withdrawal tube with an intelli-
gent one. This way, the original investment in yarn clear-
ing is safeguarded.
