ENERGY SOURCES PRIOR TO SERVICING OR
MAINTAINING EQUIPMENT
Belanger® recommends that all workers observe the OSHA (U.S. Department of
Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration) Lockout / Tagout procedure
to dissipate all potentially hazardous energy sources (i.e. - electrical, mechanical,
hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, etc.) prior to performing service or
maintenance on machinery and equipment.
Note: Reference the OSHA standard for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), Title 29
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147 and the example provided in 1910.147
Appendix A for practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment, thereby
preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees perform servicing and maintenance
activities. The standard outlines measures for controlling hazardous energies –electrical,
mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, and other energy sources.
Note: Reference the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.331 to 29 CFR 1910.335 for safe work practices to
protect employees working on electrical circuits and equipment. This section requires workers to
use safe work practices, including lockout and tagging procedures. These provisions apply when
employees are exposed to electrical hazards while working on, near, or with conductors or systems
that use electrical energy.
Note: Both referenced OSHA standards can be found at the following website: http://www.osha.gov/law-
regs.html. Browse to the General Industry tab under the Find an OSHA Standard heading, scroll
down to the link of interest and click on it.
Doing so will prevent unexpected energization, startup, or release of hazardous
energy while maintenance and servicing activities are being performed.

Introduction
The DuraBlaster® is a component with two options. One option is a rotating version that requires
tire sensing. The second option is a fixed (non-rotating) version that operates with or without tire
sensing. Both options can be programmed to operate during any wash package to provide extra
attention on the vehicle wheels. The driver-side and passenger-side DuraBlasters®, each have
two, 4 nozzle spinners to spray up to 1000 psi water on each wheel. The nozzle pressure and
water volume of the DuraBlaster® is dependant on the capability of the optional pump station.
Rotating DuraBlaster®
The rotating DuraBlaster® operation is initiated by a programmed output from the main system
controller. A PLC inside the system control panel turns on the pump station. A 2-position air
solenoid valve provides air to a cylinder that holds the spray assemblies rotated to the start
position toward the entrance of the tunnel. High pressure water sprays the front bumper and along
the lower rocker panels. A tire sensing device triggers an input to the PLC in a system with a tire
sensing controller or starts a timer in the component control box. Then, the air solenoid shifts,
causing the DuraBlaster® to rotate with the wheel, for maximum cleaning time. After full stroke,
the PLC or timer will shift the valve and the DuraBlaster® will rotate toward the entrance again.
The cycle will repeat on the rear wheel after it is sensed. Belanger® sells two types of tire sensing
devices. They are the bell hose actuator and a tire photo-eye sensing kit. Once the rear tire
application is complete the system controller will shut off the DuraBlaster® function, and the
spray assemblies will sit in a rest position rotated toward the entrance of the tunnel.
The rotating DuraBlaster® for tunnel applications utilizes a vertical cylinder that when stroked,
rotates a piston that is attached to the spinner manifold assembly. The return speed is set by an
air flow control under the back cover, using a small screw driver. This speed should be quick
enough to return and be ready for the rear wheel, yet not causing any hard slamming of the
equipment. The tracking speed is set by turning a flow control knob protruding out of the back
cover. This should be readjusted whenever conveyor speed is changed.
Fixed DuraBlaster®
The fixed DuraBlaster® operation can also be initiated by a programmed output from the main
system controller or as a timed programmed function. High pressure water sprays the front
bumper and along the lower rocker panels.
Since there is no rotating cylinder, no air is required. Other than the rotating action, the function of
the fixed DuraBlaster® is the same as the function of the rotating DuraBlaster®. So, it can be
used in similar applications.
If it is actuated as a timed function, the fixed DuraBlaster® can be used as an alternative to the
Belanger® Rocker Spin Clean.
Note: Uncrate and inspect shipment for damage, and to verify that all pieces are there. If there is
any damaged equipment, file a claim with the trucking company immediately. Receiving
party is responsible for filing claim with trucking company. Notify your local distributor or
Belanger, Inc.® immediately if shipment is determined damaged or incomplete.

DuraBlaster® Assembly and Placement
It is very important to understand the operation and activation of the DuraBlaster® to determine the
best location of the components.
1) Ideally, the pump station should be placed in the back room as close to the
DuraBlaster® as possible to allow for fast and on time water response to the wheels.
Belanger® offers 2 DuraFlo™ pump station options to supply various pressures and
flows to the DuraBlaster®. They are:

2) Ideally, the air panel (Rotating DuraBlaster® ONLY) should be placed in the back room,
but it can be placed in the bay as close as possible to the DuraBlaster®. For best
operation, keep airline length from the panel to the DuraBlaster® less than 100 feet in
length.
3) To ensure maximum cleaning, DuraBlaster® spinner assemblies should be located to
allow maximum soak time for any chemicals applied to the wheels. The spinners can be
placed below an existing piece of equipment to save on space.
The driver and passenger side DuraBlasters® should be in line with each other
across the wash bay width.
The outside of the driver side base plate should be 43” from the inside guiderail
of the conveyor as shown on the previous sketch.
The outside of the passenger side base plate should be 140” from the outside of
the driver side base plate.
Use two 3/8” x 3-3/4” anchors to secure the DuraBlaster® to the floor at these
dimensions. There are 4 mounting holes in each base plate but only 2 diagonal
anchors are needed for each side. Mark the floor, drill one 3/8” hole and insert
one anchor.
The driver side and passenger side Rotating DuraBlasters® have the same
components but are assembled slightly differently. There are two different flow
controls located under the back cover. One flow control is shiny silver and may
be installed into the top or bottom of the cylinder. The other port of the cylinder
will have an elbow that connects an airline to a brass flow control protruding
through the cover.
The brass flow control has the highest resolution, and is used to adjust air out
of the cylinder during the wheel tracking rotation.
The silver flow control is used to control air out of the cylinder during return
rotation. The assembly with the silver flow control on the bottom should be
installed on the passenger side of the tunnel.
Note: Step 3 is continued on the next page.

DuraBlaster® Assembly and Placement
Rotational Activation Device Placement
3) (Continued from previous page) To ensure maximum cleaning, DuraBlaster® spinner
assemblies should be located to allow maximum soak time for any chemicals applied to
the wheels. The spinners can be placed below an existing piece of equipment to save
on space.
Place the driver side DuraBlaster® on top of the anchor, mark the diagonal
corner and remove the DuraBlaster® prior to drilling for the second anchor.
Secure the DuraBlaster® to the floor, level, square it up to the conveyor (for a
tunnel application) or the center of the wash bay (for an inbay application) and
tighten in place. Repeat this process for the passenger side.
4) The rotational activation device position will vary based on your system.
a. Systems with controllers, such as a Belanger® Centra® or Integra®, have a tire
position sensor input that keeps track of both the front and rear tire positions.
The optional tire position sensor can be a bell hose or a photo-eye set that is
placed within 12” of the entrance photo-eye.
Note: These controllers record the tire position and allow a set distance before and after the wheel for
activation on and off.
b. Please see the appropriate Belanger® controller manual for further instructions.
Note: Program the pump to come on about 24” before the vehicle front and have the
pump go off 24” after the rear of the vehicle. A look back function should be set
to keep the pump on if another vehicle is in the wash and getting this option.
Note: Program rotation activation to come on 16” before the wheel and 16” after the
wheel to turn off. Adjust these settings after startup for best performance.
c. For other controllers with tire or wheel position capabilities, follow their manuals
for instructions.
d. For tunnel controllers without tire sensing, purchase an optional tire tracking
device, such as a Bell Hose or Photo-eye. Belanger® sensing devices are
supplied with a Wheel Sensor Timer control box that should be mounted on the
wall as close as possible to the air panel.
Note: The optional tire position sensor, (bell hose or photo-eye set-purchased
separately) should be placed 36” before the centerline of the DuraBlaster®
assemblies.
Note: The timer control box will have an on delay and an off delay to be set when the
system is operational.
