WARNING:
Means: Failure to understand and follow these
instructions may result in injury to yourself
and others.
CAUTION:
Means: Failure to follow these instructions
may cause damage to the product.
Intended Use
Ergolift-2 is a mobile passive lift with a Safe
Working Load (SWL) of 160 kg (350 lb), for
indoor use only. It is intended to be operated
on horizontal surfaces for lifting and
transferring in hospitals, nursing homes or
other health care facilities where the patient:
•Sits in a wheelchair;
•Has no capacity to support him/herself;
•Cannot stand unsupported and is not able
to bear weight, not even partially;
•Is dependant on the caregiver in most
situations;
or where the patient:
•Is passive;
•Might be almost or is completely
bedridden;
•Is often stiff or has contracted joints;
•Is totally dependent on the caregiver.
The Ergolift 2 is only for transferring patients.
It is to be used for patients within the
specified weight limit indicated on the lift and
the specified environmental conditions
described in this manual.
CAUTION: It is not recommended to use the
lift and mount the charger in humid, salty,
oxidizing and/or chlorinated conditions. In
such cases, a proactive regiment of frequent
inspections and maintenance should be
carried out.
The Ergolift 2 must always be handled by a
trained caregiver, who must attend the patient
during lift application and operation, and in
accordance with the instructions outlined in
these Instructions for Use. The Ergolift 2 is
intended to be used with loop slings
(compatible with two-hook spreader bars).
Use only slings that are designed for the
Ergolift 2.
WARNING: Before using the Ergolift 2, a
clinical assessment of the patient’s
suitability for transfer must be carried out by
a qualified health professional considering
that, among other things, the transfer may
induce substantial pressure on the patient’s
body.
Any references to “the patient” in this
document apply equally to a resident at home
or in a long term care facility and refer to the
person being lifted or transferred.
References to left or right in these instructions
are as viewed from the caregiver’s pushing
position, standing at the rear of the Ergolift 2,
facing forward.

Operational Life
The equipment is designed and tested for a
useful life of seven (7) years or
10 000 transfers—whichever comes first—
subject to preventative maintenance as
specified in the “Disinfection, Cleaning and
Maintenance” section in this manual. Time
equivalence between the number of transfers
versus the number of years is made clear in
the table below.
Transfers per Day Years
(10,000 transfers)
4 7
6 4.5
8 3.5
WARNING: The manufacturer cannot ensure
full safety for a floor lift or an accessory of
which the life span has been exceeded.
The operating life of this equipment
corresponds directly to the safe operating time
period before a complete overhaul is required.
Aging of the unit, frequency of use (transfers
per day), the weight of the patient and
maintenance frequency are factors that have
an impact on the lift’s life span. A transfer is
defined as the displacement of a patient from
one point to another. A transfer cycle includes
a lifting and a descending action.
The expected life for other consumable
products, such as batteries, fuses, lamps,
slings, straps and cords is dependent upon the
care and usage of the equipment concerned.
Consumables must be maintained in
accordance with published Instructions for
Use and the “Preventive Maintenance
Schedule”.
Equipment Identification
The unit's identification number
(specification, model, serial number) appears
on a silver nameplate attached to the lift’s
mast.
Verifying the Package Contents
Upon receipt of the equipment, verify it
against the packing list to ensure it is
complete and inspect the equipment for
possible damage due to shipping. If there is
any damage, notify the carrier immediately to
file a claim. Provide complete information
concerning damage claims or shipping errors
to your local BHM Medical representative.
Include all equipment identification numbers
and group part numbers (if any) as described
above along with a full description of
damaged parts.
Policy on Number of Staff Members
Required for Patient Transfer
BHM Medical’s passive and active series of
lifts are designed for safe usage with one
caregiver. There are circumstances, such as
combativness, obesity, contractures etc. of the
patient that may dictate the need for a two-
person transfer. It is the responsibility of each
facility or medical professional to determine if
a one or two person transfer is more
appropriate, based on the task, patient load,
environment, capability, and skill level of the
staff members.

How to Use the Ergolift 2
Transferring a Patient
WARNING: Read carefully the “Safety
Instructions” section before attempting to
use the lift.
Always carry out the “Before every use”
inspection listed in the “Preventive
Maintenance Schedule”.
Unplug the lift from the electrical outlet.
Install the patient sling (see documentation
that comes with the sling).
If necessary, adjust the base opening width
using the button on the handset or control
box.
Raise/lower the boom (using these controls
on the handset) so the carry bar is
approximately at the chest height to the
patient.
Move the lift over to the patient, so the end
of the boom is approximately 15 cm (6 in)
away from the patient. For a patient in a
lying position, lower the lift so the carry bar
is near the thorax, then install the straps.
Connect the shoulder loops of the straps and
the sling leg pieces under the thighs by
lifting one leg at a time (some attendants
prefer to connect the leg straps first. This
applies in particular to patients with large
thighs.). You may need to lower the spreader
bar a little, using the hand control. Make
sure that all straps are secured to the
spreader bar.
Carefully observe the patient’s safety as you
lift the patient slightly by pressing the
control button:
WARNING: Before lifting the patient:
1. Make sure that all straps are
attached to the carry bar.
2. Make sure the patient is
comfortable.
3. Make sure the sling is not
caught on an obstruction
(wheelchair brake or arm of
chair).
If any of the above occurs, lower the
patient immediately and correct the
problem.
Lift until the patient is suspended before
moving the patient. Guide the lift to avoid
any obstacle.
WARNING: Do not attempt to maneuver
the lift by pulling on the mast, boom,
actuator or patient.
When the patient is located above the desired
point of transfer and ready to be lowered,
press the button.
Make sure wheels are locked on the bed or
wheelchair.
WARNING: Using the handles located on
the mast, always maneuver the lift with the
legs closed in the travel direction indicated
on the figure below.

How to Use the Ergolift 2
12
For a transfer into a seated position; use the
handles on the back of the sling to position
the patient when transferring into a chair.
Hold the handles firmly as the sling lowers
and the sling will tilt back to position the
patient. As the boom lowers, guide the lift
away from the patient (approx. 15 cm/6 in).
Once the patient is properly seated and the
straps are loosed, remove the sling from the
lift.
Slide the lift away from the patient.
Sling may be removed from around the
patient.
Directional Lock
The Ergolift 2 is equipped with a directional
lock which allows a better manoeuvrability.
To engage the feature, align the wheels and
flip up the directional lock located over the
caster, at the back of the right leg. To allow
the lift to pivot, remove the directional lock.
Emergency Stop Feature
1. The emergency stop feature stops the lift
from functioning in case of an
emergency. It does not affect the
charging system, the lift will charge
whether or not the emergency stop is
engaged.
2. To activate the emergency stop, press
down on the red button on top of the
control box on the lift.
3. To deactivate the emergency stop, turn
the button clockwise.
Emergency Lowering Feature
The Ergolift 2 has an emergency manual
lowering feature in the event of an electrical
or functional failure.
If the lift malfunctions when a patient is
being transferred, the emergency manual
lowering device provides a safe way of
lowering the patient.
There must be a load applied on the actuator
for the emergency lowering feature to
function.
To operate the emergency lowering feature:
Find the red tab on the side of the motor on
the lift.
Move the patient over a bed or chair.
Slowly pull upwards on the tab and hold in
place until the patient is lowered onto chair
or bed.
Once the patient is lowered safely into a
chair or bed, take the lift to a qualified
technician to be serviced.

How to Use the Ergolift 2
13
Anti-crush Feature
To prevent damage or injury, the motor on
the lift has a limit switch that recognizes
when the boom is being lifted or pressed
upward. This limit switch will stop the
motor until the boom is no longer being
lifted or pressed upward. This will ensure
that the motor stops if the boom is
unknowingly being lowered onto an object
or patient. To check this feature, press the
button on the handset or control box then lift
up the boom. The motor will stop.
Battery Information
WARNING: Do not drop the battery
because it may cause internal damage
that is not visible. It may lose its energy to
recharge.
Due to internal damage caused when
the battery is dropped, the battery may
indicate it is fully charged, when in fact
it cannot hold a full charge. A green
light indicated on the charger may not
accurately reflect a full charge on a
damaged battery.
NEVER attempt to use a battery that
appears to be damaged or dented.
DO NOT store the battery near a heat
source. Heat will damage it.
Always keep metal battery contacts
clean.
•24 Vdc, 7.5 Ah rechargeable battery.
•Provides 80-100 transfers per battery
charge (may vary depending on patient
weight and battery condition).
Life cycle (number of charging cycles) of
the battery is largely dependent on the depth
of discharge in each cycle. The more the
battery is drained, the shorter its lifespan.
The life of the battery is also related to such
factors as varying temperatures and rest
periods between charge and discharge.
CAUTION: To prolong battery life, plug the
unit in an outlet WHENEVER THE LIFT IS
NOT IN USE.
The battery will not overcharge.
BHM uses sealed lead-acid batteries.
Contrary to nickel-cadmium, BHM
batteries do not have any memory effect.
Therefore, batteries should not be
completely drained before recharging
them.
CAUTION: Do not drain the battery
excessively. This will dramatically reduce
the battery life span.
If the low battery buzzer sounds, be sure
to recharge the battery as soon as
possible.
Charging the Battery
WARNING: Do not operate the charger
unit with a damaged cord or if the unit has
been damaged.
DO NOT forcibly bend the power cord or
place a heavy object on it. This will
damage the cord and may cause a fire or
electrical shock.
WARNING: Do not place the unit in
locations that are:
•Extremely hot;
•Dusty or dirty;
•Humid;
•Moving or vibrating.
The recharging steps should be as follows:
Plug the power cord into a standard three-
prong outlet.
Check the charging indicator light to ensure
that it is illuminated.
WARNING: When the battery is low, the
low battery indicator emits an audible
intermittent beep and the red light
illuminates.

How to Use the Ergolift 2
14
WARNING: Leave the unit plugged in.
At minimum, charge the battery until the
light is green before using it again. This
will extend the life of the battery.

Disinfection, Cleaning and Maintenance
15
Disinfection, Cleaning and Maintenance
WARNING: Preventive maintenance
specified in this manual can prevent
accidents and reduce repair costs.
Note all services or repairs to the
Ergolift 2 or its accessories in the log
book of this manual. Have the document
signed by a qualified technician.
Lift Cleaning and Care
WARNING: It is recommended that your
Ergolift 2 and its accessories are regularly
cleaned and/or disinfected between each
patient use if necessary, or daily as a
minimum. If the lift and/or equipment
needs cleaning or is suspected of being
contaminated, follow the cleaning and/or
disinfection procedures recommended
below, before re-using the equipment.
For cleaning your lift, equipment and
accessories wipe down with a damp cloth
using warm water to which a
disinfectant/cleaner has been added.
CAUTION: Do not over wet areas of the
product which could cause problems with
electrical components or internal
corrosion. If a hot air dryer is used to dry
the lift, the temperature must not exceed
80°C (176°F.) Do not use petroleum based
solvents or similar, since this may damage
plastic parts.
For disinfection of contaminated lifts,
equipment and accessories, use the preferred
method of wiping the product completely
with “hard surface disinfectant wipes” that
are supplied impregnated with a 70 % v/v
solution of Isopropyl Alcohol.
A rubbing action will be necessary when
using the wipes to promote effective
disinfection of the surfaces.
WARNING: Do not splash the lift of liquid or
immerse it.
To ensure a better rolling surface for the
wheels, clean THEM every 4 months.
Remove any hair or debris from the wheel.
To touch-up scratches or chipped paint and
retard rust, apply white spray paint (BHM
touch-up paint product # P6111).
Handling and Storage
The lift should not remain stored for long
periods of time without recharging the
batteries.
CAUTION: BHM Medical recommends
charging of batteries at least every two
weeks even if the lift is not used. This will
prevent premature aging of batteries.
Battery Replacement
BHM uses sealed lead-acid batteries.
Contrary to nickel-cadmium, BHM batteries
do not have any memory effect. Therefore,
batteries should not be completely drained
before recharge.
Replace the battery if there is a noticeable
reduction in the number of transfers that can
be performed between charges. If you notice
the low battery indicator light flashing and
hear a “beep”. Plug the lift in for 2 hours or
until the light turns green.
CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE A
BATTERY NOT AUTHORIZED BY BHM
MEDICAL.
BHM batteries are specially designed for
