Howyou rideisultimatelyyourdecision andyourresponsibility.Thefollowingsafetytipscan
enhance yourcyclingexperienceandhelp keepyousafe.
1. Helmet Afall can causegreatharmtoyourheadanditscontents.Bicyclehelmetsprovide
extracushioningforyourhead. Ahelmetcannotguaranteesafety,butitwill absorbthe
majorityofanyimpact.Helmetsmakesense.
2. RearView Mirror. Werecommendthetypethatattachesto yourhelmet.They’re
lightweightandeasytouse.Handlebarmountedmirrorscan workwell too.Butyour
viewinganglechangeswheneveryou makeaturn.
3. Eye Protection. Protectiveeyewearkeepsdust,dirtandbugsoutofyoureyes.Tinted
lensesimprovevision in sunnyorbrightconditions.

4. See and BeSeen.Wearbright,easilyvisibleclothing.Insurethatyourbicycle’sreflectors
andlightsarein goodworkingorder.Neverremovereflectorsandlightsunless youare
replacingthemwith somethingbetter.Besuretosignalyourintentionswhenchangingspeed
ordirection.
5. Rideabikethatfits.Adjustyourseattomatch yourleglength.Makesurehandlebarsare
sethigh enough thatyourkneesdon’thitthem when youpedal.
6. Wearshoes.Neverridebarefootorwhilewearingsandals.
7. Knowyourbike.Anemergencysituationisnottherighttimeto learn aboutyourbicycle’s
controls.Doyourfirstridesawayfromtrafficanddistractions.Don’tventureontobusy
streetsuntil you’vemasteredthetasksofsteering,shifting,signalingandbraking.
8. Obey therules.Knowandfollowlocalrulesandregulations.Rideinbikelanesorbike
pathswheneverpossibleandalwaysstayoff ofsidewalks.

9. Ridedefensively.Alwayspresumethattheotherguy,especiallythatguyinthecar,hasn’t
seen you.Makeallowancesforthepotentialmistakesofothers.
10. Wetordark conditions.You can’tsee as farorstop as fast.Neithercanothers.Keepthese
limitationsin mindandslowdown.Itisalwaysbetterarrivelateandunhurt thantonot
arriveatall.Trytoavoidheavilytraffickedroadsandthosewith speedlimitsabove35 MPH.
11. Downhill riding.Descendingawindingmountain roadisexhilaratingfun—unless youfall.
Takeextremecarewhentravelingatspeed. Lookfurtheraheadforobstacles.Allowgreater
stoppingdistances.Slowdownateachturn.
12. Mechanical Safety.Ittakesonlyaminute,literally,to do agoodinspectionofyourbike’s
mechanicalsystems.Dosooften,preferablyjustbeforeeachride.Here’show:
a. Mechanicals:Liftthefrontwheeloff thegroundbythreeorfourinchesandletit
bouncetotheground.Look,listenandfeelforanythingthatmightbeloose.Makea
quickvisualscan ofyourbike,includingwheels,brakesandcables,andshifting
system,includingitscables.Don’tforgetthechain.Ifanythinglookslooseorfrayed,
fixitbeforeyou ride.

b. Tires:Maintainproperinflationof 100 PSI.Press onthetopofeachwheel.
Comparehowitfeelstohowyouknowitfeelswhen correctlyinflated.Ifthetires
feelsoft,addairuntil therecommendedpressureisreached. Lookfornicks,cutsand
worntread.Fixanyproblemsbeforeyouride.
c. Wheels:Lifteach wheeloffthegroundandgiveitaquickspin.Itshouldturntrue.
Makesurebrakediscsdon’trub.Ifthewheeldoesnotspintrue,seek thehelpofa
bikeshoporqualifiedbikemechanic.
d. Wheelmounts:Wheelsareheldontothebikewithnutsorquickreleasesystems.
Makesurethey’retight.
e. Handlebars:Mustbetightandaligned. Makesurethequickreleaseisclosed
completely.
f. Brakes&Shifting:Checklevers,cablesgearsandbrakepadsforwear.Replace or
repairas necessary.
