1. Overview
The Active HD CCTV Receiver Balun (IC553A) allows one HD-SDI signal with
power and control lines to be transmitted up to 150 ft. (45 m) via a CAT6 cable at
HD resolution (720p, 1080i) in a point-to-point configuration. The balun supports
transmission of SDI digital video (including embedded Audio and/or Time Code)
within facilities and between video equipment. The IC553A is installed at the
receiver location and used with the IC552A installed at the remote camera
location. Use the baluns in HD CCTV surveillance systems and HD-SDI camera
systems.
2. Installation
One receiver-side balun and one transmitter-side balun is needed to establish a
point-to-point connection via a single UTP cable. The transmitter side must have a
an IC552A. Power for the unit may be provided via the remote camera power (12
VDC or 24 VAC) if present, or via the external 5-VDC power supply that is includ-
ed with the IC553A.
To install the balun, perform the following steps:
CAUTION: Do not attempt to open the housing. There are no user-serviceable
parts inside the balun. Opening the unit will void your warranty.
CAUTION: Do not connect the IC553A to a telecommunication outlet wired to
unrelated equipment. Making such a connection may damage the
equipment and/or the balun. Verify that the desired twisted pairs are
not being used for other LAN or telephone equipment.

1. Use a dedicated 4-pair CAT5e/6 cable between the source side HD-SDI Balun
(IC552A) and the receiver-side HD-SDI balun (IC553A)
NOTE: Patch panels are not supported by the baluns.
2. Verity that all wiring are pinned “straight-through,” have four twisted pairs,
and have the standard Ethernet RJ-45 plug.
3. Connect the IC553A balun to an HD-SDI receiver (such as a monitor or DVR).
Use a 3-foot, 1-m, 75-ohm coax cable, for the SDI signal. Connect all wires
using 24 AWG or lower gauge.
4. At the camera side, connect the IC552A to the SDI video port of the camera
equipment (i.e., HD camcorder or HD CCTV camera). Use a 3-foot, 1-m,
75-ohm coax cable, for the SDI connection. Connect all wires using 24 AWG or
lower gauge.
5. If no remote power is present at the head end from a 12-VAC or 24-VDC
source, connect the included external power supply and verify that the Power
LED is lit.
6. Power on the video equipment at both ends.
7. Verify the LED status for power and video present when all HD-SDI equipment
is powered on.
8. A typical installation diagram is shown below.

3. Troubleshooting
The following table describes some of the symptoms, probable causes and
possible solutions in respect to the installation of the Active HD CCTV Receiver
Balun.

No video
All LEDs are off
Power off • Verify there is power to the video equipment.
• Verify there is power available from camera.
No continuity in video link • Verify continuity on each pair/
• Verify that pairs are not swapped or reversed.
• Verify if both units are connected to the correct
inputs and outputs.
• Verify if all video equipment is digital.
Improper connection and/
or wrong equipment
• Check that baluns are connected to the correct
inputs and outputs.
• Check if the equipment are both digital (SDI).
SDI in 3G speed (1080p) Try lower speed (1080i).
Part of picture is
missing or
intermittent.
Missing frame or
freezing.
Exceeded distance Verify cable length and grade. Use higher-grade cable if
necessary.
If the source is using 1080p (this uses the 3G-SDI rate),
the distance is greatly reduced.
EMI interference Try turning off (or move) nearby wireless LANs,
switching power supplies, radio transmitters, to see if
problems disappear.
SDI in 3G speed (1080p) Try lower speed (1080i).
No power or no
control at the
camera
Defective cable or equipment
incorrectly connected.
Camera is drawing too much
power.
• Change cable and verify wiring interface.
• Check voltage drop in wiring.
NOTE: Power available at 12 V is very limited.
Use different equipment.
