6.0INITIALBURNINGANDCURINGOFTHEAPPLIANCE
Thefirsttimethattheapplianceislit,therewillbeanodourgivenoff.Thisisthecomponentsoftheappliance
curing.Itwillbenecessarytoventilatetheroominwhichtheapplianceissited.
Thefirstfiringneedstobedonecarefullytoallowallofthecomponentsoftheappliancetosettlegradually.
Nevertrytoruntheapplianceflatoutthefirsttimeyoulightit.
Graduallybuilduptheoutputofthefiresothatnosuddenstressesareputonthecomponentsofthe
appliance.
6A.USINGYOURSTOVE‐IMPORTANTNOTES:
•Seriousdamagecanresultiftheapplianceisleftrunningwiththeaircontrolsfullyopenfor
extendedperiods.
•Makesurethatnoneofthedoorsareleftopenwhiletheapplianceisinoperation.
•Neverleavetheapplianceunattendedduringtheinitiallightingsequence.
•Donotattempttoopenthedoorimmediatelyafterignitingthefire.Thiscouldcauseaflameflash
out.
•Alwaysweartheprotectivegloveswhenoperatingtheappliance.
•Neverburnenhancedfuelssuchas‘Petrocoke’
•Donotoverloadtheappliancewithfuel.
•Neverusechemicalsorfluidssuchasgasoline,charcoallighter,drainoilorkerosenetolightafire.
•Usingtheapplianceonaverylowoutputwillcauseexcessiveamountsoftartobuildupinsidethe
flueandcanbeaseriousfirerisk,asthiswillfuelachimneyfire.
•Weadvisethatyouhavetheapplianceservicedannuallybyacompetentheatingengineerbefore
thebeginningofanewheatingseason.
7.0LIGHTINGANDMAINTAININGALOGFIRE
Allchimneysandfluesactdifferently.Afterawhile,youwillfindouthowyourunitworksbestforstarting.
•Usescruncheduppaperanddrykindlingtostartthefire.Laytheseonthegrate.
•Opentheprimaryandsecondaryaircontrols.Thethermostatcontrolshouldbesettonumber5.
•Theignitioncontrolshouldbepushedin.Thiswillopenthedampertothechimneyfullyandcreatethe
bestconditionforthelightingofthefire.
•Itwilltakeafewminutesforthefiretoestablishitself.
•Whenthefireisburninghot,addsmallpiecesofhardwood.
•Keepallthedraftcontrolsfullyopentillabedofhot,glowingembersisestablished.
•Onceyouhavesomeredhotburningembers,openthedoorandraketheembersevenlyoverthe
gratebeforeaddinglargerpiecesofwood.
•Wesuggestthatyoudonotfullyloadtheapplianceuntilyouhavebecomecompletelyfamiliarwith
theoperationofALLthecontrols.
•Forbestresults,inanidealsituation,opentheprimaryaircontrolonethirdopenandthesecondaryair
controlcompletelyopen.Theoutputoftheappliancecannowbecontrolledusingthethermostat
control.ThisiswhenburningLOGS.
•Donotopentheloadingdoortooquicklywhenreloadingtheapplianceasthiscancauseflamesto
flashoutthedoor.Thisoccurswhenthereisunburnedfuelandalargeamountofgasesinthetopof
thefirebox.Whenthedoorisopened,oxygeniscombinedwiththegasesandtheseignite,causinga
‘miniexplosion’.
•Themaximumsizeoflog,whenrefuellinganestablishedfire,shouldbe30cm’slongand30‐40cm’sin
circumference.
•Donotburnpaintedorvarnishedwoods,MDF,oakbarkorwoodwithmorethan20%humidity.
