Introduct on
Congratulations on purchasing the ZLT paper tray system,
specially designed in collaboration with Brother. With the ZLT
you can expand your Brother HL6180DW, HL-5470DW or HL-
5450DN with additional paper handling capabilities. Use the
ZLT2 to expand your existing configuration with two paper
trays, or the ZLT4 to expand with four paper trays. With the ZLT
extension you retain all your existing Brother printer’s
functionality.
This product (or parts thereof) is to be used for the intended

Before you begin, please ensure the following:
•Ensure that you remove all cardboard and plastic packaging before you proceed with the installation
•Place the ZLT on a flat, stable surface

Step by Step
Warning: Trays are packed in plastic bags. Please note that these bags are not toys. Keep these bags
away from children and infants to prevent suffocation. Please dispose of these bags in a safe
manner
Remove all plastic and cardboard packaging from the ZLT and check the units.
Caution: Inside the trays is a protective piece of cardboard. Remove this cardboard before proceeding
with the with installation.
Take a moment to check if all the parts belonging to the ZLT are present. If a part is missing, contact the nearest ZLT
distributor in your country.

After completing steps 1 and 2, find out how to connect your ZLT below:
ZLT 2 Place the ZLT2 in the desired location.
Place the printer onto the ZLT.
Remove the screws holding the power supply holder in place and keep both the holder and
screws in a safe place. Place the power supply unit into the holder then using the screws securely
fit the power supply unit and the holder in place at the appropriate place on the rear of the unit.
Take care that the AC powercord is facing downwards.
Connect the USB cable from the printer to the USB socket on the ZLT.
Connect the power connector to the back of the ZLT.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall socket.
Note: Ensure the USB cable is fully inserted into the USB socket on the ZLT
Warning: Do not use extension cords, (multi-socket or otherwise)
Fill the trays with paper.
Switch the ZLT on.
Before switching the printer on ensure that the printers power cord is also plugged into the
wall socket.
After installation to your network, your printer is now ready for use.

ZLT 4 Attach the castors without brakes onto the threaded bolts on the back of the base, by pushing to
click the castors into place. The back of the base is the side with two M5 holes.
Attach the castors with brakes onto the threaded bolts on the front of the base, and push to click the
castors into place.
Turn the base over so the correct side is facing up.
Push the brakes on the front castors down to lock the stabiliser.
Take the paper trays out of the ZLT4.
Push the ZLT4 into the base and secure the ZLT4 at the back using the 2 Allen screws with
the supplied Allen key. Reinstall the paper trays into the ZLT4.
Remove the screws holding the power supply holder in place and keep both the holder and
screws in a safe place. Place the power supply unit into the holder then using the screws securely
fit the power supply unit and the holder in place at the appropriate place on the rear of the unit.
Take care that the AC powercord is facing downwards.
Place the printer onto the ZLT4.
Connect the USB cable from the printer to the USB socket on the ZLT4.
Connect the power connector to the back of the ZLT.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall socket.
Note: Ensure the USB cable is fully inserted into the USB socket on the ZLT
Warning: Do not use extension cords, (multi-socket or otherwise)
Fill the trays with paper.
Switch the ZLT on.
Before switching the printer on ensure that the printers power cord is also plugged into the
wall socket.
After installation to your network, your printer is now ready for use.

Note: The following example shows installation for Windows 7.
Download the customised driver and open the folder where you have downloaded the driver. Double-click the
“Setup.exe”file, and choose your language when prompted.
The E d User Lice se Agreeme t dialog box appears. Read the Agreement and click Yes to accept the terms and
continue installation.
The Co ectio Type dialog box appears asking you to select a connection type for the printer. Select “Wired
Network (Ethernet)”and click Next .
The Select Co ectio dialog box appears. Select “Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer”and click Next .

The following dialog box appears. Read the notice and click OK to continue installation.
Next the installer asks you to Choose the Brother machi e you wa t to i stall . Select the desired machine
from the displayed list and click Next to continue. If your chosen machine is not displayed, check the machine is on,
and is connected to the network.
Some windows will open and close automatically as the installation continues. Depending on your Windows Security
settings, the following dialog box may appear asking you to confirm the device software installation. Click I stall to
continue.

Next the installer displays information about the Brother support website, where you can download manuals for your
printer. Click N ext to continue.
The installer displays the E viro me tal Advice for Imagi g Equipme t and O -Li e Registratio dialog
boxes. Read the information and click Next to continue.
Finally the Setup Complete dialog box appears. Choose your required options if necessary, and then click Fi ish .
The driver installation is complete. Next you must update the firmware and configure the ZLT tray options.

Download the BRAdmin Professional application and the updated firmware files from the same location you downloaded
the customised driver.
Double-click the “.exe”file to start the BRAdmin installation. Choose your language when prompted and accept the
License Agreement. Continue the installation until it is complete.
Click Start , click All Programs , click Brother Admi istrator Utilities , click the Brother BRAdmi
Professio al 3 folder and then click the BRAdmi Professio al 3 icon to start the application. The network will
be searched, and networked printers will be displayed in the list. Locate the printer you installed earlier, right-click on its
entry and select “Load Firmware (Manual).”Make sure the “TFTP PUT”option is selected and click OK .
The Load Firmware dialog box is displayed. Click Browse to find the firmware file where you downloaded it, and
then enter the Brother machine’s password for authorisation. Then click OK to apply the firmware update.
The printer’s LCD will light up and “Program Updating”will be displayed while the Data LED flashes. The display will
change to “Please Wait”, then the printer will reboot with the new firmware. Click OK in the Load Firmware dialog
box to complete the update. Repeat the proces with the secondfirmware file.
Click Start and open Devices a d Pri ters . Right-click the icon for your printer and select “Printer properties”from
the menu. Click the Accessories tab.
The ZLT trays will be displayed under Available Optio s . Click the Add(B) button to add each tray to the
I stalled Optio s list, and then click Apply .
Click OK to exit. Your printer is now ready to use.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
Important: Before cleaning or servicing disconnect the power form the ZLT and printer
The ZLT requires no preventative maintenance. Exterior cleaning and removal of paper dust from the ZLT trays is
occasionally required.
To clean the exterior of the ZLT , use a damp cloth. Do not use detergents as these may cause damage to the unit.
To clean dust from the paper trays, remove the trays from the ZLT unit. Remove any paper from the trays, and then
dust the trays using a soft brush.
Warning: To prevent damage to the paper exit sensor arms, please do not reach into the paper tray
openings.
Warning: Make sure that no liquids enter the trays.

ZLT SELF TESTING
This ZLT feature allows the independent testing of each printer and computer. This test allows you to check the correct
paper source, positioning, and running behaviour.
Important: To perform a self test on your ZLT, first remove the paper tray from the printer.
Warning: Beware of moving parts (rollers!)
Perform the follow ng steps:
Power off
Open all ZLT trays (approx. 10 cm)
Switch the ZLT on (power on)
Wait until you hear a short beep , followed by the clicking of the electromagnetic activation in each
module, followed by the spinning of the motor (approx. 2 sec .)
Close the top ZLT tray. After a moment a sheet will be fed from the tray. You can now see the position
of the left edge of the sheet on the top cover of the ZLT (you can now mark the position of the paper)
Remove the sheet from this waiting position. The ZLT will automatically feed the next sheet. You can now
compare the position of the left ed e of the next sheet. Ideally this second sheet should be fed in the same
way as the first. (If the left position is different, or from left to right (or vice versa), this may indicate a
problem in either the tray, the unit (module) or loading paper)
To test the next tray, close the tray before removing the sheet from the waiting position. The ZLT will feed
the sheet from the next lowest tray. (The ZLT will always feed from the lowermost closed tray)
To return to normal operation, switch the ZLT off and close all trays. Switch the ZLT on again, and the ZLT will
respond with a short ' Reset ' beep to show it is ready for use

TROUBLESHOOTING
Most problems with your machine can be resolved by yourself. If something goes wrong, please check the following
points:
S mple problems w th the pr nter/ZLT
Is the power cord firmly plugged into the printer/ZLT and a properly grounded electrical outlet?
Is the printer/ZLT getting power?
Is the ZLT connected to the printer via the USB cable?
Has the power been interrupted by a switch or a blown fuse?
Check if any other equipment plugged into the electrical outlet is not working properly
If after checking all the above points, the problem persists, switch the printer off , wait 10 seconds, and
then switch the printer back on as this can often fix problems
