Introduction
The Type 2250-M Hand-held analyser running Type BZ7140 Logging and sound recording
software (Version 2.0) enables both noise measurement results and sound recordings to be stored
to a standard memory card.
This Field Guide includes some suggestions to help you use the MATRON-Light domestic noise
monitoring system. These are only relevant for the monitoring of noise inside a property.
Suggestions for use are shown in italics.
Please note that this version of the MATRON-Light Field Guide applies to 2250-M, it’s
associated Utilities software Type BZ5503 and results presentation and analysis computer
software Types 7815 Noise Explorer or 7820 Evaluator with the following version numbers:

1. Assembling the MATRON - Light with 2250-M (running BZ7140
Logging and Sound Recording application).
1.1 The MATRON-Light/2250-M system consists of the following components:
1. KE-1015 Outer brief case (includes foam insert)
2. KE-1016 Inner small lockable case (includes foam insert)
3. ZH-0666 Hand switch and cable
4. 2250-M Hand-held analyser running Type BZ7140 Logging and sound recording
application (Version 2.0) including SD memory card Type UL-1009.
5. 4231 Sound Level Calibrator
6. AO-0441-D-030 Microphone extension cable for 2250-M (3m)
7. ZG-0426 Mains Power Supply
8. UA-1251 Fold-flat tripod (only the short extension rod is used with MATRON-
Light the longer extension rod and the rotating head supplied with the tripod are
not used in MATRON-Light)
9. UA- 0588 Tripod adaptor, holder for microphone & preamplifier.
10. UA-1236 Protective cover for microphone
Presentation of stored results and sound recordings by Personal Computer:
11. AO-1476 USB Interface cable to link to Computer – supplied with Type 2250-M
(or a memory card reader – this device is highly recommended for transferring
results).

1.2 Assembly of the MATRON-Light system
1.2.1 Before opening the outer case, ensure the “Bruel & Kjaer ” label under the handle is
the correct way up.
1.2.2 Open the (outer) briefcase by pulling the outer edges of the clips on either side of the
carrying handle.

1.2.3 Remove the microphone and preamplifier input stage from the Type 2250-M analyser by
gripping the locking collar located on the preamplifier at the top of your 2250-M. Slide
the spring-loaded locking collar back towards the microphone to release the preamplifier.
1.2.4 Open the inner case of your MATRON-Light. The locations of the components are shown
here:

a) To the top of your 2250-M:
i) Connect the microphone cable to the front socket of your Type 2250-M. Please note
that there is a red dot on the underside of the LEMO silver connector and this should
be lined up with the corresponding white dot located on the back panel of your 2250-
M. Please also note that this is a captive plug and the spring - loaded collar on the
silver plug should be used to remove the connection – do not pull on the cable.
b) To the base of your 2250-M:
ii) Insert a memory card. You can use either a Compact Flash (CF) or Secure Digital
(SD) memory card to store both the measured noise results and the sound recordings.
A 512MB SD card is supplied with your system. Smaller and larger capacity cards are
available and please consult our website for advice on “Compatible SD and CF
memory cards”: http://www.bksv.co.uk/?ID=3556.
The locations of the card slots are shown here:
Please note the SD-cards must be mounted with the card label facing downwards.
iii) Connect the plug of the power cable marked “DC In” to the right-hand socket
marked below.
CAUTION: This plug is captive so that if you wish to remove it, pull on the
knurled part of the plug NOT the cable or protruding part of the plug.
iv) Connect the plug of the cable marked “Trigger” to the centre socket marked in the
diagram above.

CAUTION: This plug is captive so that if you wish to remove it, pull on the
knurled part of the plug NOT the cable or protruding part of the plug.
1.3 Setting the combination lock
1.3.1 You can choose a three-digit code to unlock the small padlock provided to lock the small
MATRON-Light case. The combination padlock is delivered with a 0-0-0 setting.
1.3.2 With the padlock in a locked condition, rotate the three tumblers to 0-0-0 when lined up
with the black location line.
1.3.3 Undo the shackle and rotate it 180º and push it into the body of the lock.
1.3.4 Now rotate the three tumblers to select the combination you require.
NOTE THE THREE-DIGIT CODE YOU HAVE SELECTED:

1.3.5 Release and rotate the shackle and lock by scrambling the numbers.
The inner brief case containing the 2250-M and the cables may be stored in the appropriate cut
outs in the brief case (see photograph on page 5)

2. Initial setting up procedure
2.1.1 Before opening the outer case, ensure the “Bruel & Kjaer ” label under the handle is
the correct way up.
2.1.2 Open the (outer) briefcase by pulling the outer edges of the clips on either side of the
carrying handle
2.1.3 Remove the inner brief case containing your 2250-M.
2.1.4 Attach the small Lemo plug at the end of the cable of the power supply (Type ZG-0426)
to the middle (Power (12V)) socket of the inner case as shown here:
2.1.5 Connect the mains supply cable to the ZG-0426 power supply and then to a power socket.
2.1.6 Switch on the 2250-M Hand-held analyser by pressing (On/Off).
2.2 Preparing Type 2250-M Analyser to continuously log noise results & record audio
signals:
Please note that your new Type 2250-M Noise analyser is delivered pre-configured to work as
part of the MATRON-Light system.
The following notes detail the settings used in this configuration so that you can change them if
you wish.
If you wish to operate the MATRON-Light with the default settings, proceed to Section 3.
2.2.1 Apply power to your MATRON-Light system as described in 2.1.5.
2.2.2 Switch on the 2250-M by pressing (On/Off).
2.2.3 After a short time a screen similar to this one should appear:

2.2.4 Check that “MATRON Logging” is displayed on the top line as shown above. If not, tap
on the bar at the top of the screen to reveal a drop-down list similar to:
Tap on “MATRON Logging” from the list. This mode of operation will then load.
2.2.5 Tap on (Menu) followed by .
2.2.6 Tap on and ensure the Time Zone is correct (GMT +00:00) and the
Language and Keyboard are as you wish.
2.2.7 Tap on and if you wish, set Auto-naming of Projects to . This will
ensure that all your saved results have the start date of the project attached to those results
for easier identification (the format is Year/Month/Date such as 07/03/05 for the 5th March
2007). As an alternative (set Auto-naming to ), you can use a Project name – tap on
the default name to reveal a keyboard and change to your required project(s)
name.
2.2.8 Tap on (Menu) followed by .
2.2.9 Tap on the tab to reveal:

2.2.10 Make the following alterations under each listed set-up group. Click on the (to open) or
(to close) each group in turn:
You can choose the “Z” weighting (similar to linear frequency weighting) if preferred.
It is essential that the statistics are based on LAF (not LAS or LAeq) for use in the UK.
In this example, the system is set up to monitor for 8 days with a logging period of 1 second.

If you want to change the total measurement time or period, just tap on the appropriate time and a
numeric keypad appears. Select the required days/hours/minutes/seconds you wish to change and
tap on the required value(s). Finally tap on to accept your changes.
In this example, we have decided to select the LAeq value to give us a time history (profile) of
that parameter during the monitoring.
You can chose more parameters including full broadband statistics (such as LAF10, LAF50,
LAF90 etc) if you wish but this takes much more storage space on the memory card. To optimise
use of available storage space for MATRON-Light, it is recommended to choose no more than 3
parameters (such as LAFMin, LAeq and LAFMax) rather than store full statistical data.
We have chosen not to measure and store short-duration values (10 times per second) of either
LAeq or LAF. This is provided mainly for the measurement requirements of Clay Target
Shooting noise assessments.
Marker 6 (Sound) will be automatically added to the results when sound recordings are started
using the MATRON-Light hand-switch.
Sound Recording must be operational and the following criteria control that process.

a) Recording Control has been set for activation by the MATRON-3 hand-
switch.
b) The has been set to meaning that we are recording sound
signals in the frequency range up to about 6.6kHz. Other recording frequency ranges and
their meanings are given in the following table.

The above table is based on sound recording only. The amount of space needed for noise results
should also be taken into account and can be calculated from a spreadsheet available from our
website: http://www.bksv.co.uk/?ID=3556.
As an example, for the above measurement set-up (8 days logging at 1sec intervals), the required
space is approximately 1Mbyte. Therefore the sound recording times estimated above should be
slightly reduced depending on the size of the memory card in use.
c) The has been set to . Z-weighting is equivalent to Linear
frequency weighting (that is, the signal is not frequency weighted by A- or C-
weightings).
d) The should be set to for the MATRON-Light application.
e) Set the to a suitable value like (typically 100 to 120dB) for
your measurements. The sound recording has a 96dB range from the level you set for the
Peak Recording Level.
f) The is the duration of the sound recorded before the MATRON-3 hand-
switch is pressed to start the recording. For the “Fair” recording quality set in (b) above,
the maximum time is 50 seconds. This facility may be switched off by selecting .
g) The is the duration of the sound recorded after the MATRON-3 hand-
switch is pressed to stop the recording. The maximum time is 5 minutes. This facility may
be switched off by selecting .
h) If you wish to restrict the recording time for each push of the MATRON-3 hand-switch to
reduce the amount of listening time after the investigation, then set the to
.
i) If you wish, you can set a for the sound recording.
j) You can also set a for the sound recording (typically 5 minutes).
The settings in “Occupational Health” are not relevant in the MATRON-Light application.
2.2.10 Tap on (Menu) followed by to reveal:

2.2.11 Tap on to move up to the next storage level and show the available choices of
“Internal Disc”, “SD-Card” or “CF-Card” and the amount of storage available:
2.2.12 Tap on (or if you have fitted a CF memory card) and then .
2.2.13 Tap on to set the current job folder for future measurement results. Tap .
2.2.14 Tap on (Menu). Tap on to save any changes made to the current
measurement set-up.
2.3 Detection of Power interruption during the investigation
You may wish to set up the MATRON-Light system so that you are aware of any power
interruptions that have occurred during the investigation. These may have been caused by a
“normal” interruption in the mains power supply or may have been caused by the complainant
moving the instrumentation from the location where it had been initially set up.
To activate the power interruption facility, proceed as follows.
2.3.1 With the Type 2250-M switched off, carefully remove the Power input and Trigger input
cables. CAUTION: These plugs are captive so pull on the knurled part of the plug NOT the
cable or protruding part of the plug.
2.3.2 Invert the instrument and if necessary, remove the optional re-chargeable battery pack by
releasing the catch. Store the re-chargeable battery in a safe place.
2.3.3 Ensure that the miniature switch marked “Turn on and Charge” and “Charge” is set to “Turn
on and Charge” as here:

2.3.4 Connect the plugs of the cables marked “DC In” and “Trigger” to the appropriate sockets as
here:
2.3.5 If the mains supply is interrupted during the investigation then the 2250-M will switch off
(with no re-chargeable battery present) until mains power is restored. At that point the
instrument will start and resume normal operation. A new storage file will be created and on
completion of the investigation, two files will have been stored (or more if the power
interruption occurs more than once). After downloading results, (see Section 9: Transferring
results to computer) the power interruption will be recognised with an absence of results
during that event. Here is an example.

3. Office preparation before site visit.
3.1 Checking date and time and calibrating the 2250-M:
3.1.1 Attach the microphone extension cable to the small case and then attach the microphone and
preamplifier assembly.
3.1.2 Switch on the 2250-M by pressing (On/Off).
3.1.3 Assuming the instrument was being used in the “MATRON-Light” configuration when it
was last used, the following screen should appear:
3.1.4 Check to see the results are to be stored to either an SD- or CF-memory card by observing
the second line like this: . If not then follow instructions 2.2.10 to
2.2.14.
3.1.5 Check the date and time by tapping the current time shown at the bottom right-hand corner
of the display:
3.1.6 Tap on that time and check the current date and time from the pop-up screen:
Adjust if necessary.

3.1.7 Apply sound level calibrator Type 4231 to the microphone and activate by pressing On/Off
(on some models).
3.1.8 Tap on (Menu) and then select .
3.1.9 Follow the instructions on the top of the display.
3.1.10 During the calibration sequence, an Information message will ask you to accept the
calibration. Tap on .
3.1.11 When calibration is complete, tap on .
3.2 Recording a memory card “full” dummy file
3.2.1 In order to ensure that you will be able to carry out a calibration check at the end of the
measurement even if the memory card has been filled, we recommend recording a “Card
Full” file at this stage. In the event of the user filling the card, the Card Full file may be
deleted to make space for the calibration check.
3.2.2 Remove the hand-switch and its cable from the brief case and connect the plug to the
corresponding socket on the small inner case.
3.2.3 Press (Start/Pause) and the measurement will start (flashing amber traffic lights
change to green).
3.2.4 Press the hand-switch to start the sound recording. A red light in the switch indicates sound
recording is taking place.
3.2.5 After approximately 90 seconds (the sound marker will then be filling the screen), stop the
sound recording by pressing the hand-switch. The red light extinguishes.
3.2.6 Press the key (Pause/Start) once. The traffic lights will now change to a flashing
amber colour.
3.2.7 Press (Store) to save the results. Note the File Number in which your results have been
stored – this is found at the top left-hand part of the screen, e.g. . The first part is
the date (year:month:day) and the 001 is the first set of results that day (see section 2.2.7 for
details on Auto-naming your results).
3.2.8 Press to reset the measurement.
3.2.9 Tap on (Menu) followed by .
3.2.10 Tap on the file name (e.g. in the above example) and choose from the
drop-down list.
3.2.11 You can now delete the name of the file (use ) and tap in, for example, .

3.2.12 Close the window by tapping on .
3.2.13 The preparations are complete so the 2250-M can now be switched off by pressing the
(On/Off).

4. Installing the MATRON-Light system at complainant’s home
Locate the MATRON-Light system in a position where the complainant would
normally be when hearing the noise under investigation.
4.1 The microphone and preamplifier (connected to the microphone extension cable) should be
mounted on the short extension rod of the fold-flat tripod Type UA-1251 by using Tripod
Adaptor Type UA-0588.
4.2 The other end of the microphone extension cable (Type AO-0441) should be connected to the
corresponding socket (right-hand one viewed from the side of the case) on the right-hand side
of the small case.
4.3 Attach the small Lemo plug at the end of the cable of the power supply (Type ZG-0426) to the
middle (Power (12V)) socket marked “DC IN”. Connect the mains supply cable to the ZG-
0426 power supply and then to a power socket.
4.4 Remove the hand-switch and its cable from the brief case and connect the plug to the
corresponding socket marked “REMOTE”.
Starting 2250-M
When your MATRON-Light system has been assembled, start it running with the following
procedure.
4.5 Switch on the 2250-M by pressing (On/Off).
4.6 Press (Start/Pause) and the measurement will start (flashing amber traffic lights change
to green).
4.7 Apply Calibrator Type 4231 to the remotely-mounted microphone and activate by pressing
On/Off ( on some models). You may observe the green lights on your 2250-M change to
red (overload) as the calibrator is applied. This is normal as the pressure change at the
