Unpacking and Setup
This section provides unpacking and setup information for LinkStation.
Open the shipping carton of LinkStation and carefully unpack its contents. The
carton should contain the following items:
Main Unit (LinkStation) 1
LinkStation Base Plate 1
Base Rubber Feet 4
Ethernet Cable 1
LinkNavigator Installation CD 1
Quick Setup Guide (this user’s guide) 1
Warranty card 1
If any items are missing or damaged, please contact the reseller or retailer from
which the product was purchased.
The front face of the LinkStation has a protective plastic film covering for
protection from scratching during assembly and shipping. The film can be
removed by peeling it away from any corner of the front face.

LinkStation Setup
Plug LinkStation’s power cord into a power outlet. Then, connect the
included Ethernet Cable into the Ethernet port on the back of LinkStation.
Press the power button on the front of LinkStation to turn LinkStation on.
Connect the other end of the included Ethernet Cable into a hub, switch,
or router on the network.

Check the LINK/ACT light on the front of the LinkStation. If it is lit, then
LinkStation is connected properly; please turn to Page 4 to continue
setup. If it is not lit, continue to the next step.
On the back of LinkStation, flip the black ‘Cable Selection’ switch. This
switch tells LinkStation whether to communicate over a Crossover or
Patch cable. NOTE: Newer LinkStation products use MDIX Auto-Sensing
LAN ports and do not have nor require the Cable Selection switch.
Verify that the LINK/ACT light on the front of LinkStation is lit (see Step 4’s
picture). If it is lit, turn to Page 4 to contintue setting up LinkStation. If the
LINK/ACT light is still not lit, please verify the following:

Both LinkStation and the hub, switch, or router are powered on.
The Ethernet Cable is securely fastened to both devices.
The Ethernet Cable is not damaged. To verify this, try using
another Ethernet Cable. When verifying new cables, remember
to switch the black ‘Cable Selection’ switch to both positions.

Accessing LinkStation Data from Mac OSX
Accessing the LinkStation is performed using the following steps:
A list of the local network items
available on the local network will
appear. Double-click the LinkStation
icon which will be named HD-xxx.
One of two windows will appear. An SMB mount window or an Apple
fileshare window.
If the SMB Mount Window opens:
By default there are two share
folders on the LinkStation, Share
and Share-Mac. From the pop-up
window, select the folder Share-
Mac and click OK.
The Authentication window will open.
Do not enter a password, click OK.
Click the Finder icon in the dock.
Select the ‘Network’ icon, and the
double-click the ‘Local’ folder.

By default there are two share
folders on the LinkStation, Share
and Share-Mac. Select ‘Share-Mac’
and click OK.
The LinkStation will now appear
on your desktop and in your finder.
You are now ready to copy
files to the LinkStation.
Simply drag and drop files
onto the Share-Mac icon.
If the Apple Fileshare window
opens:
Select Guest and click the
‘Connect’ button.

Accessing the LinkStation is performed using the following steps:
From the Chooser, select the
AppleShare icon. A list a networked
items will appear in the window.
Select the LinkStation and click OK.
The login window will open.
Select Guest and click Connect.
From the Apple Menu Iitems,
Select the Chooser.
By default there are two share
folders on the LinkStation, Share
and Share-Mac. Select ‘Share-Mac’
and click OK.
The LinkStation will now appear
on your desktop.
You are now ready to copy files to
the LinkStation.
Simply drag and drop files onto the
Share-Mac icon.

Open System Preferences and click Print & Fax.
Click Printing and then click Set Up Printers.
Click Add and select Appletalk. Your local zone will automatically be
selected. All Appletalk-enabled printers will appear in the Printer List.
The LinkStation appears as a PostScript Printer. Select the LinkStation
and from the Printer Model pop-up menu, select your printer in the Model
Name list and click Add.
OS X comes with many CUPS-GIMP drivers for todays most common
printers. If you printer does not appear, try a generic Postscript Printer or
contact the printer manufacturer.
Selecting the correct Printer Model ensures all printer functionality.
The LinkStation will now appear in the Printer List in bold type as the
default printer. It also appears in the Printer pop-up menu when you print a
document.
Using the LinkStation’s Print Server FunctionThe setup of
The Print Server funtion of the LinkStation is only available for users
who are using OSX. OS 9 does not have print drivers that are suitable
to be used with this print server function.

Backups
Backups are recommended for any user who cannot afford to lose
important files and data. If a computer failure happens on your
computer, you have a backup copy of your files and data on the
LinkStation. Apple has a Backup Utility for OS X users that have
purchased a .Mac account. This will be shown here. Backup software
is available for both OSX and OS9. Some of these solutions are
free and some with more functionality may have a small cost. We
recommend you search the WWW or consult your local reseller for
other third party solutions.
By default, the users idisk is
selected as the backup destination.
To change this to the LinkStation,
Click the Set button and then the
Create Button.
Connect to the LinkStation and make
sure the Share-Mac folder
is mounted on the desktop.
From you Applications
folder, open the application Backup.

Backups
Select the Share-Mac folder and
name the backup file.
Click Create.
Select the files you would like to
have backed up by placing a check
mark in the corresponding box.
You may add addition files and
folders by clicking the “+” button
on the bottom left and select which
files and folders you would like to
backup.
Once done click the Backup Now
button.
Your files will now be backed up.
Your can also create a backup
schedule by clicking the calendar
icon on the bottom left. (circled).
Select whether you want Daily or
weekly backups, time of day and
day of week.

The LinkStation name is
used to name and identify the
LinkStation. A friendly, easy name
is recommended. Enter a suitable
name in the ‘LinkStation Name’
field. Feel free to use your first or
last name, a description of the data
to be installed on LinkStation, or simply name it LinkStation. Enter a
short description of LinkStation in the ‘LinkStation Description’field.
Once completed, press the ‘Apply’button. NOTE: After changing the
LinkStation name, you may be required to re-locate the network share
by following the instructions on Page 4 or Page 6.
By default there are two
shares on LinkStation. If
you would like to create
additional shares for
specific users or specific
types of data, then click
on the ‘Security’tab.
Then click on the ‘Shared
Folder Setup’ link. From
this configuration page
you can add new shares or edit existing shares. Press the ‘Add a New
Folder’button to begin creating a new shared folder.
To begin setting up a new
share, enter an appropriate
share/folder name in the
‘Shared Folder Name’
field. Enter a description
of the share in the ‘Shared
Folder Description’ field.
It is recommended to leave
the remaining settings in
their default state. Please
refer to the User Manual
on the LinkNavigator CD-ROM before changing any of these additional
settings. Press the ‘Apply’button when finished. Please repeat this
step to create additional shares.
