Chapter 1 Getting Started
Features
• TheunitsupportsRAID6,RAID5,andRAID0mode.
• ParitythatisusedinRAID6andRAID5arraywillbecreatedbyparitygeneratorandDMAwithhigh
performance.
• Fortheinternaldrives,theyare"fluid-bearing"drivessotheyarequietandimpact-resistant.
• Youcanreplacethedrivewhiletheunitispoweredonbecauseitsupportshot-swapping.Ifonedriveis
damagedinRAID5,ortwodrivesaredamagedinRAID6,youcanrecoverdatabyreplacingthem.Iftwoormore
drivesinRAID5andthreeormoredrivesinRAID6fail,thenalldataonthearrayislost.
• TheunithasThunderbolt2,eSATA,andUSB3.0ports.IfThunderbolt2connectionsareenabled,eSATAandUSB
connectionsarenotavailable.
Precautions
To avoid damage to data, never do any of the following while data is being accessed. Your data may be
damaged or lost.
(1) UnplugtheThunderbolt,eSATA,orUSBcablesorpowercables
(2) Turnoffyourcomputer
(3) Putyourcomputerintostandby,hibernate,orsleepmode
• Refertoyourcomputer'smanualonhowtochangetheBIOSsettingtonotbootfromaUSBdevice.
• IfyourWindowscomputerwillnotbootwhiletheunitisconnected,trythefollowing:
(1)ConnecttheunittoyourcomputerafterbootingupWindows.
(2)Refertoyourcomputer'smanualtochangetheBIOSsettingnottobootfromaUSBdevice.
• Iftheunitisnotrecognizedbythecomputer,trythefollowing:
(1)UnplugtheThunderbolt,eSATA,orUSBcableandconnectitbackafterafewseconds.
(2)IfyouuseUSBhubs,unplugthecablefromitandconnectitdirectlytothecomputer.
• Insomeenvironments,Windowsmaydisplayamessage,"AHI-SPEEDUSBdeviceispluggedintoanon-HI-SPEED
USBhub."or"ThisDeviceCanPerformFaster"whenconnectingbyUSBcable.
ThemessagewilldisappearwhenconnectingtoUSB3.0port.
• Ifyouusetheunitwithmultiplepartitions,formateachpartitionbeforeuse.
• Neverconfiguretheunitasadestinationforvirtualmemory.
• Bootinganoperatingsystemfromtheunitisnotsupported.
• Somecomputersmaydisplayadelayedwritewhentheyreturnfromanenergy-savingstate.Ifthishappens,

Chapter 3 Changing RAID Mode
What Is RAID?
Overview
RAIDisasystemofcombiningmultipleharddrivesforuseasasingleharddrive,increasingharddrivespeed,and
enablingeasyrecoveryintheeventofharddrivefailure.
Note: IfyouchangetheRAIDmode,alldataonthearrayisdeleted.Alwaysbackupanyimportantdatabefore
performingactionsthataffectyourRAIDarray.
DetailsofeachRAIDmodearedescribedbelow:
RAID 6 (Default Settings)
Combines4ormoredrivesintoasinglearray.RAID6writesdatawithparitysothattheaccessspeedisslowerthan
RAID0array.Theusablespaceisequaltothesumofthecapacityofalldrivesminusthecapacityoftwodrives.If2
drivesinthearrayaredamaged,youcanrecoverdatabyreplacingthem.If3ormoredrivesaredamaged,yourdata
islost.
RAID 5
Combines3ormoredrivesintoasinglearray.RAID6writesdatawithparitysothattheaccessspeedisslowerthan
RAID0array.Theusablespaceisequaltothesumofthecapacityoftheharddrivesminusthecapacityofonedrive.
Ifonedriveinthearrayisdamaged,youcanrecoverdatabyreplacingthedamageddrive.If2ormoredrivesare
damaged,yourdataislost.
RAID 0
Combines2ormoreharddrivesintoasinglearray.Theusablediskspaceisthetotalspaceofalldrivesused.This
simpleRAIDmodeoffersfasterperformancethanRAIDmodesthatincludeparity.Ifasingledriveinthearrayfails,
thenalldatainthearrayislost.
Notes
• WheneveraRAIDarrayisbuilt,alldatastoredontheunitislost.Besuretobackupyourdatabeforebuildingthe
RAIDarray.
• EveniftheRAIDarrayiscreatedforredundancy,thiswillnotavoiddatalossbyaccidentalerasureorsoftware
fault.Backingupregularlyisrecommended.
• EveniftheRAIDarrayiscreatedforredundancy,thedatawillbelostwhenmultipleharddrivesfailatthesame
time.Whenadrivefails,replacethedefectivedrivetoanewoneimmediately.
