LIFTING AND UNLOADING THE SCALE
The Cardinal SLS single animal livestock scale can be lifted and transported to any firm surface
that is relatively smooth and flat using a forklift.
WARNING! Make sure the forklift forks are long enough to go all the way through
under the scale so that the scale rests securely on the forks.
Evenly space forks under
scale to maintain balance.
Ensure the forks are
completely under the scale.
Carefully lift the scale and
proceed to new location.
IMPORTANT! Make sure both scale gates are closed and
both latches are in the locked position when lifting, loading,
and transporting the scale.
Lift the Scale
1. Adjust the forks of the forklift to make sure each fork is the same distance from the center
of the scale so the scale stays balanced.
2. Carefully approach the scale inserting the forks under the scale.
3. Make sure the forks are completely through under the scale before attempting to lift.
4. Carefully lift the scale and proceed to the selected location for the operation. Note that the
scale can be used on any firm surface that is relatively smooth and flat.
5. When not using the scale, it should be stored on the same type of surface.
DANGER! The SLS scale is very heavy. Make sure the forks on the forklift used
for lifting the scale are adequate and that the scale is resting on them securely
before transporting the scale.
Make sure that everyone is clear of the scale (not under, on, or around the scale)
when lifting and transporting the scale to the selected location.

INSTALLATION
The following section outlines procedures for installing your scale.
1. Choose a location for the scale that is a firm surface, relatively smooth, flat, and free of debris.
2. Do not push or slide the scale once it is on the ground, damage to the load cells may result.
3. With the scale in its selected location, remove the shipping brackets before lowering the scale
completely to the ground. Once the scale is on the ground, adjust the feet to evenly support
the scale, and make certain the weight is evenly distributed over the four corners of the scale.
4. Remove the weight indicator from the packing box and connect the cable from the scale to the
weight indicator, following the instructions provided in the weight indicator manual.
5. After the connection has been made, power up and zero the weight indicator according to the
weight indicator manual directions.
Removing the Shipping Brackets
Before placing the scale in its selected location, the
shipping brackets must be removed.
1. At the selected location for the scale, lower it to
approximately 6-8 inches above the ground.
2. Remove the four 1/4-20 hex head screws (two on
the side and two on the end) securing the shipping
bracket to the scale base.
3. Repeat step 2 for each shipping bracket.
4. After the four shipping brackets have been
removed, the scale can be lowered to the ground.
5. Once the scale is on the ground, proceed with
adjusting the support feet.
Adjust the Support Feet
The load cells used on the SLS scale have adjustable
support feet to ensure the scale is evenly supported on
the ground. The scale must be evenly supported to
prevent it from rocking once the weighing operation
has begun. If the scale is rocking during the weighing
operation, the indicator will be unable to repeat the
weight readings and will show unstable weight.
Once you have positioned the scale in its selected
location, check to make sure the scale is not rocking. If
necessary, adjust the support feet to ensure the scale
is evenly supported on the ground (not rocking) and to
make certain the weight is evenly distributed over each
of the four corners of the scale.
If necessary, adjust the support feet
to ensure the scale is evenly
supported on the ground and that
the weight is evenly distributed over
each corner of the scale.
Remove the four 1/4-20 hex head
screws (two on side and two on end)
to remove the shipping bracket.

OPERATION
Gate Operation
The gates on the SLS can easily be opened and closed with one hand. Simply grab the large,
ergonomic handle and slide the gate open to allow the animal in and out of the scale pen. Closing
the gate after the animal is in the scale pen is just as easy requiring only one hand to close it.
The gate can easily be opened and
closed with one hand.
The gate is fully opened and ready for
the animal to enter or exit the scale pen.
Securing the Gate Before Weighing the Animal
Once the animal is in the scale pen, close the gate and secure the animal in the scale pen by
rotating the gate latch located on the exterior of the pen.
Latch rotated to closed position.
Both gates closed and latched.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If a difficulty is encountered with the operation of the scale a visual check of the scale platform
should be made to make certain operation is not restricted by foreign material, such as rocks,
branches, and other debris.
The following troubleshooting guide should prove useful in isolating and correcting a problem with
the scale. If the problem cannot be resolved with the use of this troubleshooting guide, contact a
qualified scale technician for service.
PROBLEM:
The scale reads accurate weight to a point but will not register beyond that point.
CAUSE:
Obstruction between the ground and bottom of the scale.
SOLUTION:
Check for and remove the obstruction (rocks, branches, or other debris) from under scale.
PROBLEM:
Cannot obtain repeatable readings or weight indicator shows unstable.
CAUSE:
A. Scale is not stable. This is usually due to scale rocking from uneven support feet.
B. Bad or improper wiring
C. Bad load cell
D. Bad trim circuit board
SOLUTION:
A. Adjust support feet until the scale is stable and not rocking.
B. Check wiring & solder connections
C. Replace load cell

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE
Your scale was calibrated at the factory. Minor changes in calibration due to shock and vibration
encountered during transporting the scale may necessitate re-calibration.
IMPORTANT! The following procedures require a known accurate test weight.
Place a test weight or weights equal to 10 percent of the scale's capacity on the scale platform.
Record the weight displayed. If the displayed weight does not fall within ± .1% percent of the
value of the test weight, the scale may need to be re-calibrated.
Please check the following before proceeding:
•Make certain proper installation procedures were followed.
•Is there anything near or under the scale (such as rocks, branches, or other debris)
restricting proper scale operation?
IMPORTANT! It is recommended the calibration procedures be performed by a
qualified scale technician.
1. Place a test weight equal to 10 percent of the scale's capacity over each of the four load cells
(the corner of the scale), one at a time.
2. Record the displayed weight of each corner.
3. If the difference in displayed weight exceeds ± .1 percent of the test weight, trimming
adjustments for your load cells must be performed. Refer to the next section, TRIM
ADJUSTMENT for further instruction.
4. If all four weight readings are within the allowable tolerance (± .1 percent of the test weight),
the weight indicator should be re-calibrated per the instructions in the weight indicator manual.
Reference Handbook #44, Table 6, for Accuracy Tolerance.

12
TRIM ADJUSTMENT
The purpose of adjusting trim is so the same weight reading will be displayed regardless of where
the load is placed on the scale deck. All scales are corner trimmed before leaving the factory. In
the event of re-calibration or load cell replacement, follow the instructions below to re-trim the
corners. It is assumed the other three load cells are already corner-sealed to agree with each
other. If not, please refer to the next page for further instructions.
Single Load Cell
1. Remove the junction box cover access plate located on the side of the scale.
2. Remove the junction box access cover.
3. Refer to the figure below for load cell location reference.
4. Turn the trim potentiometer for the load cell needing re-calibration clockwise for 25 turns, or
until a click is heard indicating the end of the potentiometer adjustment.
5. Place a test weight on each corner, one at a time, and record the displayed weight for each
corner.
6. Place a test weight on the corner with the highest reading and adjust the appropriate trim
potentiometer until the weight reading agrees with the lowest reading obtained in Step 5.
7. Repeat Step 6 until all corners have the same weight reading.
8. Replace the screws securing the junction box cover and access plate.
