3. Installation
3.1 Sicherheitshinweise

3.2 Before your start
Before installing the device remove the black protection
socket inside the jack on the backside.
Choose a dry and safe p ace for insta ing the CP740BMW. Remember that you
need access to the front p ate to change the USB stick. If unsure how to insta
the product, ask a automotive service station or a car Hi-Fi specia ist. Before
fina y insta ing the device, check if the device is working proper y.
Mount the antenna shipped with the product at the port „BT“ on the backside.
Make sure p aces are c ean and free from any grease where you ike to insta
the se f-adhesive mounting brackets. Make sure the device cannot get oose
and does not interfere other parts of your car.
3.3 Installation
The CP740BMW is equipped with the identica connectors as the origina CD
changer from stock. For any connection retrofit, the same ru es as for the
origina CD changer app y.

3.4.4 Power supply
For powering up the device, only Pin contact 1 and 2 is needed. The device
can be powered from permanent and switched 12V supp y. It wi a ways switch
itse f of after a minute, after the MOST network is going off, ike when you
remove the key or ock the car.
3.5 Cars with no CD changer wiring
Cars that are not equipped with an origina CD Changer from factory (SA672)
or do not have a CD changer preparation option (SA694) may need additiona
wiring and coding of the head unit. Ask your se er or the manufacturer where
to get appropriate materia to retrofit the CD changer connector.
4. Operation / first startup
4.1. Preparation of the USB Stick
The CP740BMW accepts a most any USB Stick from 1.1, 2.0. 3.0 with a
maximum of 256GB capacity (or even more) if it has been proper y prepared
with FAT32 format.
Only USB sticks with FA 32 format will be read!
Shou d you have bought a new USB memory stick, p ease make sure it has the
correct format. You can do this by inserting it into your PC or Laptop. Go to
“properties” of the device. If you see a format ike “NTFS” or “exFAT”, the stick
needs to be formatted with FAT32 format. Some Windows™ operating systems
wi not a ow to format media greater than 32GB with FAT32. But there is a

free too that a ows formatting any stick with FAT32. It is ca ed „guiformat“
and can be down oaded from the manufacturer#s web site. kann das

Now create 6 folders on the Stick that start with a number from 1 to 5
he six main folders
These five main fo ders represent the six virtua CD’s in a
changer magazine. The CP740BMW wi create its own ists and
databases from the fod er content into a Fo der ca ed INDEX.
You do not have to create this INDEX fo der. It is automatica y
created by the device. You can a ways de ete the INDEX fo der,
the CP740 wi automatica y recreate this fo der next time you
insert the card. The first time the card is inserted, creating the
INDEX wi take some additiona time (up to a few mimutes)
before you can p ay music.
The fo der number 6 is NOT USED because it represents a virtua menu fo der
for device settings and BT Phone streaming.
You can a so create sub fo ders within the six main fo ders. And into these
fo ders, you can create further sub sub fo ders. The maximum nesting eve is
5. Any further sub eve wi be ignored.

Sub fo ders are a good possibi ity to organize your
music co ection. The order of p ayback is the same
order you copied the fi es onto the card.

4.2 Device configuration
The CP740BMW can be configured through a specia configuration fi e on your
USB stick. The fi e is ca ed “CP700.INI”. It is a simp e Ascii text fi e that can be
opened and edited with any notepad or other p ain text editor. Lines that start
with a semico on “;” wi be ignored by the device. These ines are used for
comments for examp e.

The most important parameter in the CP700.INI is the emu ation mode ca ed
“EMU=”. It contro s as with kind of changer the CP740BMW shows up at the
head unit. If there is no CP700.INI, by defau t the device wi act as a audio
E60 CD changer with no extra functiona ity. The fo owing examp e shows how
it wi be set to this:
EMU=E60CDC
If this ine is active, the CP740BMW behaves ike an o d CH changer from the
E60 series. There is no fo der browsing and on y some basic tit e information. If
your head unit is ab e to show mp3 features (maybe need some activation in
advance) then you can use the fo owing ine:
EMU=E60FULL
This activates the fu mp3 feature set and ets the CP740BMW act as a MP3
Changer unit that came across 2006 to the market.
4.3 MP3 ag / title display
As mentioned before, the CP740BMW can basica y simu ate two units:
- Standard Audio 6 CD changer Part.No. 6512 6986081 (EMU=E60CDC)
MP3/Audio CD/CDR changer 6512 9200633 (EMU=E60FULL)

Interpreten, sowie die Navigation durch die Ordnerstruktur auf dem USB Stick
If your head unit is not properly coded for this MP3
functionality, it is possible that the CP740BMW is not
recognized at all!
Changes in the cp700.ini file will take effect after device

restart! After you changed something in the ini, let to
CP740BMW go to sleep or disconnect and reconnect it to
activate the changes.
You can program/code the MP3 option with either the origina BMW diagnosis
system (ISTA-P) or over third party too s ike “Rheingo d” or NCS Expert.
Within NCS you add the feature +KMP3 or if you modify your head unit
direct y (Coding too , NCS dummy) change in unit „CAPPL“ the option „mp3“ to
„mp3=full„.
4.4 User interface
The CP740BMW can be contro ed ike the origina CD Changer. There is no
visib e difference in the CDC menu in your head unit. To start p ayback, go into
menu “Entertainment” or choose “CDC” in the main menu (depends on the
head unit mode ). The 6 CDs corre ate to the 6 main fo ders on the SD card.
5. Operating state / indicator ight
5.1. LEDs on the front plate
The LED ( ight emitting diode) array on the front p ate (1) shows the current
state of the CP740BMW. The fo owing tab e ists a possib e operation states:

5.2 Messages on displays

5.3 Common problems and solutions
•Device does not p ay my music from USB stick
So ution: In most cases the 5 fo ders that start with the numbers 1 to 5
are missing on the stick. On y the fi e inside these fo ders are recognized
and p ayed.
•I see on y a whee with numbers on the disp ay but no ist
Solution: The device is in mode “Audio CD changer”. Change entry
„EMU=E60CDC“ to „EMU=E60FULL“ within the CP700.ini fi e on your USB
stick.
•I on y see “reading medium” and no progress
Your head Head-Unit (Radio/Nav) is not prepared for MP3 functiona ity.
You need to activation option mp3_wechs er=aktiv or mp3=fu in your
head unit. Or you change back to simp e Audio CD changer emu ation
mode by changing the entry „EMU=E60CDC“ within the CP700.ini fi e on
your USB stick.
•LED 1/3 and 2/4 are b inking
The operating system cou d no be started because it is either corrupt or
non-existent. Try reinsta ing it by putting a “update.bin” onto the USB
stick and p ug it into the device. The firmware update process starts
automatica y by b inking a LEDs very fast. Wait unti a LEDs are off
again and wait for 10 seconds. Then unp ug and p ug in the device again.
6. Wireless features
6.1 Pair your mobile phone
To pair your mobi e phone with the CP740BMW, you need to activate
„B uetooth“ in your phone. Go to settings and search for the option „Add a new
device“. Wait unti a device named „CP740BMW“ appears in the ist. C ick on it
and start the pairing process. Sometimes, especia y if there was a different
phone connected before, this operatin may be tried severa times. A so try to
Reset B uetooth in the iDrive Menu by going into CD6, then B Settings , B
Reset. If the phone is porper y connected, you can see its name in CD6, fo der
B Status. E65 E66 cars: You a ways need to change to USB stick (CD 1 to 5)
to get the fo der content of CD6 udpated. The E65 on y re-reads fo der content,
after the cd has changed for a moment.

6.2 Reconnect
Shou d one of the 3 features not be connected, try to reset CP740 by choosing
CD6, then B Settings , B Reset. If the phone is porper y connected, you
can see its name in CD6, fo der B Status. After your phone is connected, it
may ask if the device sha be a owed to read your messages. If you like to
get popup messages on the screen, you need to allow this.
7. Wireless playback
7.1 Source select
As soon as your te ephone is connected to the CP740BMW, you can choose
between the sources A2DP and Aux In by se ecting CD 6 in your on-board
monitor. Music can be heard from the mobi e device via A2DP, and the sound of
the source connected to the rear-mounted chinch / RCA socket via Aux In. You
can use the forward / backward buttons on the device and on the steering
whee to change the track being p ayed.
No Audio playback in the first run
If you can’t hear audio of the phone, try pressing the volume button of
the car radio two times. his will stop and restart the playback process
on the mobile. Also make sure you increase the volume of your phone
to max. level.
8. Reading messages
For your own safety, p ease note that operating the CP740BMW whi e driving
can distract you from the traffic and cause an accident. On y operate your
CP740BMW when the traffic f ow a ows it! Under no circumstances et yourse f
be distracted by the device! The road traffic regu ations must be observed in
any case.
The device can read new messages from your phone and disp ay them on the
screen. To do this, the mobi e phone has to forward the messages interna y.
This can be done on Android devices e.g. with the he p of the "Notification
Forwarder Pro" app. You can find this in the Goog e P ay Store.

8.2 Message list
The ist of messages received since the ast start can be disp ayed on CD 6,
Messages fo der. In order to disp ay the entire text of the message, the
message must be p ayed ike a song. Activate the detai ed view as we : press
the se ected message with iDrive and check the "Detai s" box in the context
menu that appears right down to the bottom)

10. Video input / V module Simulation
The CP740BMW offers the option of fading in audio and video sources on the
origina monitor. This is on y possib e with Navigation Professiona (CCC)
without an existing TV option. To achieve this, the CP740BMW can simu ate an
origina TV modu e.
If you want the CP740BMW to offer this function, you must update the
firmware of the device to the CP745BMW. The software is insta ed as described
in this manua under point 11.

After the CP745BMW firmware has been imported and the device has
restarted, make sure that you have activated the "TV" option in your CCC
navigation device. You can activate this option using suitab e OBD software or
a coding specia ist.
11. Firmware Update
To keep the device up to date, it can be updated with new firmware at any
time via USB. To do this, copy the update.bin fi e from our website
www.cartain.de> Support to a FAT32 formatted USB stick, insert it into the
device and restart it by
a) Locks the vehic e for 5 minutes or
b) Unp ug the device for at east 5 seconds and then p ug it in again.
12. Proper disposal
Wrong disposa poses a danger for the enviroment! Packaging parts and
materia s are va uab e resources and can be recyc ed in many cases. To save
our enviroment, p ease fo ow these points:

- Fo ow oca reycyc ing aws and regu ations!
Parts that are maked with the waste bin symbo MUST NOT be put into common
househo d waste! These parts may contain substances that are harmfu for the
enviroment. P ease ask your oca waste disposa and recyc ing office or the
se er how to proper y dispose these parts! At any time, the manufacturer wi
take back the unit free of charge.
