DOOR OPERATION
MULTI GRATE
The door handle has been carefully designed to be removed from the
stove during normal operation and re-fitted prior to loading and
de-ashing . However, if you need to open the door when the fire is
running at maximum then the additional use of a cloth or glove may
be required. Do not slam or strike the door.
Take care not to touch the door as it will be hot when the fire is
burning. Turn the door handle anti-clockwise to open, and clockwise
to close. For normal operation, the door must be closed.
Your Charnwood Cove is fitted with a multi grate to enable wood to
be burned and ash to be cleared. The grate has two positions:-
1) In the open position the grate bars are vertical with gaps in
between allowing the ash to fall down into the ashpan .
2) In the closed position the grate bars are horizontal, allowing the
combustion air to come round the sides of the grate and over the top
of it. When in the closed position ash is able to build up on the grate
as is necessary for effective wood burning.
Movement of the grate from one position to the other is effected
using the door opening tool supplied as shown in Fig. 2. The grate is
put into the open position by moving the tool up until the handle is in
the 1 o'clock position. The grate is put into the closed position by
moving the tool down until the handle is in the 5 o'clock position. To
riddle the appliance the tool should be moved between the 1 o'clock
and 3 o'clock positions several times. When burning wood the ash
should be allowed to build up and riddling should only be carried out
once or twice a week.
DO NOT USE THIS STOVE IF THE DOOR GLASS IS BROKEN.
Before lighting the stove check with the installer that the work and
checks described in the Installation Instructions have been carried out
correctly and that the chimney has been swept, is sound and free
from any obstructions.
FUEL
Only dry well seasoned wood should be burnt on this appliance as
burning wet unseasoned wood will give rise to heavy tar deposits in
the stove, on the glass and within the chimney. For the same reason
hard woods (such as Ash, Beech and Oak) are better than soft woods
(such as Pine and Spruce.) Burning wet unseasoned wood will also
result in considerably reduced outputs. The wood should be cut and
split and then left to season in a well ventilated dry place for at least
one year but preferably two years before use. Do not store fuel
within the room heater installation clearances or within the space
required for fuel charging and ash removal.
This stove is not designed to burn household waste. For advice on
other fuels, please contact Charnwood.
PETROLEUM COKE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR USE ON THIS
APPLIANCE. ITS USE WILL INVALIDATE THE GUARANTEE.
DO NOT USE CHEMICALS OR FLUIDS TO START THE FIRE.
DO NOT BURN GARBAGE OR FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS SUCH
AS GASOLINE, NAPHTHA OR ENGINE OIL.
NEVER USE GASOLINE, GASOLINE-TYPE LANTERN FUEL,
KEROSENE, CHARCOAL LIGHTER FLUID, OR SIMILAR
LIQUIDS TO START OR 'FRESHEN UP' A FIRE IN THIS
HEATER. KEEP ALL SUCH LIQUIDS WELL AWAY FROM THE
HEATER WHILE IT IS IN USE.
Your Cove stove has been designed to work with the minimum
effort. If any operation - such as riddling the grate or opening and
closing the door - begins to require extra force then the cause must
be investigated and corrected to prevent damage being caused to the
stove.
It is also made from hard material. Ensure that you have good
balance before operating the fire.
REMEMBER THE STOVE WILL BE HOT WHILE IN
OPERATION. KEEP CHILDREN, CLOTHING AND FURNITURE
AWAY. CONTACT MAY CAUSE SKIN BURNS.

LIGHTING
The stove may be lit using dry kindling wood and paper or fire
lighters. Set the grate into the closed position. Place the paper, or
fire lighters, and kindling on the grate and cover with a few small dry
logs. Open the air control fully (see Fig. 1.) Light the paper or fire
lighters. Leave the door cracked open until the fuel is well ignited
then load with dry logs such that the air holes in the rear air manifold
are still clearly visible. Load the logs diagonally along the firebed to
ensure good airflow.
Do not close the fire door
completely, but leave it cracked open for a few minutes until flames
are well established above the logs. It may now be fully closed. Once
the fire is up to temperature the airwash system will begin to work,
so allow the fire to become hot before adjusting the air control to the
required setting.
On initial lighting, the stove may smoke and give off an odour as the
silicon paint with which the firebox is painted reacts to the heat. This
is normal and will cease after a short time, but meanwhile the room
should be kept well ventilated.
At first only light a small fire and burn it slowly for two hours to allow
any residual moisture in the bricks to evaporate.
When relighting the stove, riddle slightly, and then empty the ashpan.

The fire is controlled by the single air control knob shown in Fig. 1.
Pull the knob out to make the fire burn faster, push it in to make the
fire burn slower.
Logs must NOT be loaded above the level of
the air holes in the rear air manifold.
CONTROLLING THE FIRE
This unique QuattroFlow air control* provides carefully balanced
air to enable optimum burning conditions without the need to adjust
multiple controls.
If for any reason the flame dies, the door must be cracked open until
the flame is well re-established

few small dry logs with a good amount of kindling will help to get
the fire up to temperature quickly.
For correct firing we recommend the use of a stove pipe
thermometer which may be purchased from your supplier or from
ourselves.
. Overfiring may cause a house
fire or can result in permanent damage to the stove. If any part of the
stove glows, you are overfiring.

RIDDLING
When burning wood, ash should be allowed to build up and only
riddled when the ash begins to cover the slots in the rear fireplate.
The fire should be riddled with the door shut (see Fig. 2.) Place the
tool onto the riddling lever and rotate between the 1 o'clock and 3
o'clock positions several times. Too much riddling can result in
emptying unburnt fuel into the ashpan and should therefore be
avoided. D
After riddling, the grate should be put back
into the closed position (the tool should be in the 5 o'clock position
for closed grate).
The ashpan should be emptied regularly before it becomes too full.
REFUELLING
The firebox must not be overfilled and fuel must not spill over the top
of the front fire bar.
If the fire has burnt down to
half volume, one or two logs may be added without changing any
controls. If a complete refuel is required, then the door must be
cracked open for a few minutes as described in the ‘Lighting’
paragraph. Logs should be evenly distributed diagonally across the
fire bed, ensuring that the rear manifold airholes are clear.
Fuel must not project over the front fire bar or damage to the glass
may be caused when the door is closed. It can also cause the glass to
black up, and smoke to be produced. Maximum filling height is such
that logs cannot impede the air flow through the rear manifold
airholes. Liquid fuels are not to be used on this stove.
ASH CLEARANCE AND DISPOSAL

Cleaning
Cleaning the Glass
The ashpan is handled using the
Door Opening tool provided. Ensure that the tongue of the ashpan is
protruding through the slot in the top of the tool before lifting. (See
Fig.3) . Care should be taken to ensure that ash is cool before
emptying it into plastic liners or bins. Ashes should be placed in a
steel container with a tight fitting lid and moved outdoors
immediately. Other waste shall not be placed in this container. The
closed container of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor
or on the ground, well away from all combustible materials, pending
the final disposal. If the ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or
otherwise
ly dispersed, they should be retained in the closed container until all
cinders have thoroughly cooled.
To make ash disposal easier there is a special ash container available -
the . This may be purchased from your
supplier or, in case of difficulty, from Charnwood.
The stove is finished with a high temperature paint which will
withstand the temperatures encountered in normal use. This may be
cleaned with a damp lint-free cloth when the stove is cold. Should re-
painting become necessary then special high temperature paints are
available from your supplier or from Charnwood.
The glass in the door is a special ceramic glass which is able to
withstand high temperatures. Before cleaning the glass open the door
and allow it to cool. Clean the glass using a damp cloth and then wipe
over with a dry cloth. Any stubborn deposits on the glass may be
removed with a proprietary stove glass cleaner or ceramic hob

cleaner. Some deposits on the glass may be burnt off simply by
running the fire at a fast rate for a few minutes.
The ceramic glass (part no. 006/PY18) in the door comes already
fitted. In the unlikely event the glass should break then the broken
glass should be carefully removed and disposed of safely. The door
can then be opened and simply lifted up and off the hinge posts. Pins
locate the door in the hinge posts. Remove the four glass retainers by
unscrewing the screws holding them in. The glass seal should be
inspected for signs of wear and replaced if necessary. Lay the door
flat – inside up – and place the new glass carefully into the glass area.
Re-fit the glass retainers. Do not overtighten the screws.
If the fire is going to be out of use for a long period (for instance in
the summer) then to prevent condensation, and hence corrosion, the
air control should be left fully open and the fire door left ajar. It is
also advisable to sweep the chimney and clean out the fire. Spraying
the inside of the door and firebox with a light oil, such as WD40, will
also help to keep all internal parts working well.
After long periods where the fire has been out of use, the chimney
and appliance flueways should be cleaned before lighting.
For the fire to operate correctly it is important that the door seals
are in good condition. Check that they do not become worn or
frayed and replace them when necessary.
It is recommended that the fire is serviced once a year to keep it in
first class working order. After cleaning out the firebox thoroughly,
check that all internal parts are in good working order, replacing any
parts that are beginning to show signs of wear. Check that the door
seals are in good condition and that the door seals correctly. A
servicing guide is available on request. Repairs or modifications may
only be carried out by the Manufacturer or their approved agents.
DO NOT USE
ABRASIVE CLEANERS OR PADS AS THESE CAN SCRATCH
THE SURFACE WHICH WILL WEAKEN THE GLASS AND
CAUSE PREMATURE FAILURE. AEROSOL SPRAY CLEANERS
SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR THE APPLIANCE WHILST IT IS
UNDER FIRE. DO NOT CLEAN THE GLASS WHILST IT IS
HOT.

DO NOT USE SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS.
It is important that the throat plate and all the stove flueways are kept
clean. They should be checked approximately once a week, by
looking up into the firebox for signs of soot, fly-ash or creosote on
the throat plate and at the sides of the firebox. If there are signs of a
build up of soot, fly-ash or creosote deposits then the fire must be let
out in order to clean the throat plate and flueways.
Before attempting to clean the throat plate and flueways ensure that
the fire is cold. Wear suitable gloves to prevent irritation from soot
deposits. To remove the throat plate lift the left hand edge up, pull
the plate forwards and to the left, (1&2) then lower the plate down
from its right hand side (3). It may now be removed by manouvering
through the doorway. (see Fig. 4.)
The chimney should be swept at least once a year. Where a top
outlet is used it will generally be possible to sweep the chimney
through the appliance. If the stove is fitted in place of an open fire

CHIMNEY SWEEPING
When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic
vapors, which combine with expelled moisture to form creosote. The
creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a
slow-burning fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the
flue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hot fire.
The chimney connector and chimney should be inspected at least
once every two months during the heating season to determine if a
creosote build up has occurred.
If creosote has accumulated (3mm, (1/8in.) or more) it should be
removed to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
then the chimney should be swept one month after installation to
clear any soot falls which may have occurred due to the difference in
combustion between the stove and the open fire.
First remove the front firebar, side fire plates, and the throat plate.
Then sweep the chimney ensuring that soot is removed from all
horizontal surfaces after sweeping.
In situations where it is not possible to sweep through the appliance
the installer will have provided alternative means, such as a soot door.
After sweeping the chimney the appliance flue outlet and the flue
pipe connecting the stove to the chimney must be cleaned with a flue
brush.
Check that:
a) the air inlet at the rear of the stove is not obstructed in any way,
b) chimneys and flueways are clear,
c) that a suitable fuel is being used,
d) that there is an adequate air supply into the room,
e) that an extractor fan is not fitted in the same room as the stove.
f) there is sufficient draw in the chimney, (once the chimney is warm
a draft reading of at least 0.10 inches water gauge (25Pa) should be

Different types of sweep's brushes are available to suit different
flueways. For standard brick chimneys a wire centre sweep's brush
fitted with a guide wheel is recommended. For prefabricated
insulated chimneys the manufacturers instructions with regard to
sweeping should be consulted.
This appliance uses an automatic air control timer which is powered by
four type AA alkaline batteries. It is recommended that the alkaline
batteries are changed at the start of every heating season. The batteries
are contained in a box located on the inside right of the stand. A light on
the box indicates when the timer is in operation. The timer is actuated
when the stove door is closed and runs for a pre-determined time, then
automatically switches off. If on closing the door the light on the box
does not illuminate then this indicates that the batteries need replacing.
The timer controls an auxiliary air slide which ensures smokeless
operation.

obtained).
Keeping the glass clean requires a certain amount of experimentation
due to the differences in the draw of different chimneys. The
following points should be noted and with a little care should enable
the glass to be kept clean in most situations:
a) The airwash relies on a supply of heated air to keep the glass clean,
therefore, when lighting the stove allow the fire bed to become well
established before closing the air control. This also applies when re-
fuelling the stove.
b) When re-fuelling keep the fuel as far back from the front firebar as
possible, do not try to fit too much fuel into the firebox.
c) Wet wood or logs overhanging the front firebars will cause the
glass to blacken.
It is always more difficult to keep the glass clean when running the
stove very slowly for long periods.
Check that all flue connections and the blanking plate are well sealed.
It is also important that the chimney draw is sufficient
hen the chimney is warm a draft reading of
at least 0.10 inches water gauge(25pa) should be obtained.
The most common cause of fume emission is flueway or chimney
blockage. For your own safety these must be kept clean.

Check that :
a) The door is tightly closed.
b) The air control is pushed in .
c) A suitable fuel is being used.
d) Door seals are intact.
If the chimney is thoroughly and regularly swept, chimney fires should
not occur. However, contact your local municipal or provincial fire
authority for information on how to handle a chimney fire, and if a
chimney fire does occur push the air control in fully and tightly close
the door of the appliance. This should cause the chimney fire to go out
in which case the control should be kept closed until the stove has gone
out. The chimney and flueways should then be cleaned. If the chimney
fire does not go out when the above action is taken then the fire
brigade should be called immediately.
Chimney Fires
After a chimney fire the chimney should be carefully examined for any
damage. Expert advice should be sought if necessary.

Charnwood Premier Dealer has a great deal of experience and will also
be able to provide helpful advice. Further help is available from the
Charnwood Customer Services department who will be pleased to give
advice, if necessary.
IF YOU NEED FURTHER HELP

HEALTH & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Please take care when installing the stove that the requirements of
Health and Safety at Work are met.
All aspects of the installation must conform to NFPA 211.
Some types of fire cement are caustic and should not be allowed to
come into contact with the skin. In case of contact wash with plenty
of water.
If there is a possibility of disturbing any asbestos in the course of
installation then please use appropriate protective equipment.
There must be an adequate air supply into the room in which the
appliance is installed to provide combustion air. The combustion air
supply must be via a permanently open vent. The minimum free area
required is (1 ).2.5 in 6.5cm

This is particularly necessary if the
room is double glazed. It must be positioned such that it is not liable
to blockage.
If an extractor fan is fitted in the same room as the stove, there must
be sufficient fresh air supply to provide for both stove and fan and
CHIMNEY
The stove must be connected to a code-approved masonry chimney
with a flue liner, to a relined masonry chimney that meets local codes,
or to a prefabricated metal chimney that complies with the
requirements for Type HT chimneys in the Standard for Chimneys
Factory-Built, Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance, UL
103, or High Temperature (650°C) Standard ULC S-629 for Canada.
In order for the appliance to perform satisfactorily the chimney
height must not be less than 13' (4 metres) measured vertically from
the outlet of the stove to the top of the chimney. The minimum
internal chimney size is
If an existing chimney is to be used it must be swept and checked, it
must be in good condition, free from cracks and blockages, and
should not have an excessive cross sectional area. Your local building
inspector, professional chimney sweep or fire department official will
be able to inspect the chimney, or refer you to someone who can. If
the chimney is in poor condition then advice should be sought
regarding the necessity of having the chimney lined. If it is found
necessary to line the chimney then a lining suitable for Solid Fuel must
be used.
If there is no existing chimney then a prefabricated block chimney or
a twin walled insulated stainless steel flue can be used either internally
or externally. These chimneys must be fitted in accordance with the
manufacturers instructions and Building Regulations.
Single wall flue pipe is suitable for connecting the stove to the
chimney but is not suitable for using for the complete chimney.
If it is found that there is excessive draw in the chimney then a draft
stabilizer should be fitted.
It is important that there is sufficient draw in the chimney and that
the chimney does not suffer from down-draft. When the chimney is
warm the draw should be not less than 0.1 inches water gauge
(25pa). If in doubt about the chimney seek expert advice.

avoid the possibility of sucking fumes into the room.
UNPACKING THE STOVE
The stove arrives bolted and shrink-wrapped to its pallet. The
wrapping is first removed, then the stove released from the pallet by
removing the 4 pallet bolts using a 10mm spanner. The pallet brackets
can now be removed from the stove by tilting it and using a 13mm
spanner to remove the bolts. These 4 bolts are replaced for levelling
the stove. It may now be moved to its final position. The pallet is
intended to be cut up and used for kindling fuel.

should be made of 24 gauge or heavier steel, and should be 6”
(150mm) in diameter. Do not use a galvanized connector; it cannot
withstand the high temperatures that can be reached by smoke and
gases, and may release toxic fumes under high heat.
A chimney connector shall not pass through an attic or roof space,
closet or similar concealed space, or a floor, or ceiling.
Where passage through a wall, or partition of combustible
construction is desired, the installation shall conform to CAN/CAS-
B365, Installation Code for Solid-Fuel-Burning Appliances and
Equipment in Canada or to the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) in the United States.
There are several ways of connecting the stove to the flue. These are
illustrated in figures 12 to 15.

connection (shown in Fig.14) is used, then the chimney may be swept
through the appliance.
Ensure that the clamping plate does not prevent the
throat plate from seating correctly.
The Flue Collar is bolted to the stove using the two screws and nuts
provided and tightened down onto the ring of rope seal as shown in
Fig.17. The crimped end of the Chimney Connector Pipe is located in
the tapered inside of the Flue Collar and secured with 3 sheet metal
screws. Any subsequent sections must be assembled in the direction
shown in Fig.17.
Before initial lighting the following points should be checked :-

PRE LIGHTING CHECK
The stove comes with the blanking plate fitted to the top flue outlet.
The seal for the outlet is a 7"(180mm) dia ring of rope seal. The
seal for the outlet is a length of adhesive backed fibre webbing
supplied with instructions. This is applied to the flue collar or the
Vertical Rear Flue adapter for rear outlet installations. For top outlet
installations, the blanking plate must be removed, have the webbing
fitted to its sealing face, and fitted to the rear flue outlet.

Ensure that
the fold on the clamping plate is in line with the lugs on the firebox as
shown in Fig.16
SOOT DOORS
It is possible to pass a 16 inch diameter sweeps brush through the
appliance but in most back outlet installations it will be necessary to
have a soot door to enable the chimney to be swept. This may either
be in the actual brickwork of the chimney or in the register plate.
Various types and positions of soot doors are shown in figures 12 to
15.

Minimum 3.5 in. (90 mm) thick brick masonry wall framed into combustible wall with a
minimum of 12 in. (305mm) brick separation from clay liner to combustibles. Fireclay
liner (ASTM C 315, Standard Specification for Clay Fire Linings, or equivalent),
minimum 5/8 in. (16-mm) wall thickness, shall run from outer surface of brick wall to,
but not beyond, the inner surface of chimney flue liner and shall be firmly cemented in

Prefabricated Metal Chimney
Chimney must be minimum 6 in.(152mm) diameter high temperature chimney listed
to UL 103 HT or CAN/ULC-S629-M87.
It must use components required by the manufacturer for installation.
All the installation clearances required by the manufacturer must be maintained.
Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.

2. The plates round the sides and back of the grate must be in
position and sitting correctly.
3. The throat plate must be fitted in the roof of the appliance and
should be checked to ensure that it has not become dislodged in
transit. The method of location and positioning of the throat plate is
shown in Fig. 4.
4. The tape covering the positive terminal of the battery in the control
box must be removed, allowing the automatic timer to operate.
On completion of the installation and after allowing a suitable period
of time for the fire cement and mortar to dry out, the stove should be
lit and checked to ensure that smoke and fumes are taken from the
