This document describes how to configure Cisco G.SHDSL Ethernet in the first mile (EFM) and
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM Enhanced high-speed WAN interface
card (EHWIC) connect Cisco Integrated Services Routers Generation 2 (ISR G2s) with central office
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) and provide up to four lines of G.SHDSL
(ITU-T 991.2) connectivity. The C888EA provides four pairs of multimode G.SHDSL connectivity.
There is one EHWIC model and one fixed platform model:
•EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA—A double-wide multimode EHWIC G.SHDSL, 4 pair, 802.3ah, EFM and
ATM mode interface card
•C888EA—A multimode G.SHDSL, 4 pair 802.3ah, EFM and ATM mode fixed platform

Prerequisites for Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM EHWICs
•Ensure that you have the appropriate Cisco router to serve as the host router.
The following Cisco routers support Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM EHWICs:
– Cisco 1921 ISR
– Cisco 1941 ISR
– Cisco 2901 ISR
– Cisco 2911 ISR
– Cisco 2921 ISR
– Cisco 2951 ISR

•Use the show version command to ensure that the router is running the correct IOS software. The
C888EA and EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA models require Cisco IOS Release Release: <optional, example:
Cisco IOS Release 15.1(1)T> or later.
Note When minimum release requirements are met, you can change images on the router without
affecting performance.
•Install the Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM EHWIC on the router, using the directions provided in Cisco
Interface Cards Hardware Installation Guide and Cisco Network Modules and Interface Cards
Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information.
Information About Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM
Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM EHWICs support up to four pairs of digital subscriber lines (DSL). The
fixed platform model (C888EA) also supports up to four pairs. The DSL pairs are bundled in groups and
configured in the Cisco IOS command-line interface (CLI) by using the dsl-group command. Selecting
the mode is done by using the mode command.

Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM
The Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA provides up to four lines of connectivity through one RJ-45 connector
(see Figure 1), in EFM or ATM modes. The Cisco 888EA fixed platform (see Figure 2) supports up to
four lines of connectivity through one RJ-45 connector, in EFM or ATM modes.
Note The C888EA and the Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA support the Dying Gasp feature. The term dying gasp
refers to power status as defined in ITU-T standard G.991.2, section 7.1.2.5.3.

Green—Operating system is running.
Amber—Loopback mode.
EFM Green—Indicates EFM mode.
ATM Green—Indicates ATM mode.
L0, L1, L2, L3 Status of link:
Green on—Link is active.
Off—Link is inactive or not configured.
Amber—Link alarm.
Blinking green—Link is training. Slow blinking indicates Inverse Multiplexing
Over ATM (IMA) link training. Fast blinking indicates non-IMA link training.
Amber and green blinking simultaneously—Loopback mode. EN/LP is also amber.

OK On—DC power is being supplied to the router and the Cisco IOS software is
running.
Blinking—Bootup is in process, or the router is in ROMMON monitor mode.
Off—Power is not supplied to the router.
PPP On—At least one PPP session is established.
CD Green—xDSL interface is connected to the DSLAM6.
Blinking Green—Training to the line.
Off—A connection has not been established or the port is shut down.

Note The annex configuration option is available only if the termination is central office (CO).

Configuring EFM or ATM Mode and a DSL Group
Use the Cisco IOS CLI on the router in global config-controller mode to configure the mode on the
Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA or the C888EA.
Note The dsl-group must be removed before changing from a previously configured mode.

Configuring the G.SHDSL Service on a Cisco Router
To configure the G.SHDSL service on the Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA or C888EA using the
Cisco IOS CLI in global configuration mode, follow these steps.
Note For EHWICs, use the three-tuple notation (slot number/subslot number/0). For fixed platforms, use the
single-tuple notation (slot number).

To configure a 2-wire non-bonding DSL group on a Cisco G.SHDSL EFM/ATM, use the Cisco IOS CLI
on the router in global configuration mode. Configuring 2-wire non-bonding DSL group is the same for
EFM and ATM modes.
Note For EHWICs, use the three-tuple notation (slot number/subslot number/0). For fixed platforms, use the

Configuring Bonding Groups in ATM Mode
Use the Cisco IOS CLI on the router in global configuration mode to configure bonding groups in the
ATM mode on the Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA, or on the C888EA. There are two types of bonding
groups possible in ATM mode: M-pair and IMA.
Note To ensure a successful bonding group in the ATM mode configuration, confirm that the central office
(CO) network equipment that is connected with the Cisco EHWIC-4SHDSL-EA is also configured with
the same bonding group type.
Note For EHWICs, use the three-tuple notation (slot number/subslot number/0). For fixed platforms, use the
single-tuple notation (slot number).
