Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 1
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a Codan 3033 Telephone
Interconnect. With this great product and Codan’s supreme
after-sales support, you can look forward to many years of
reliable communication between your HF communication
network and your public telephone system. Please read this
guide thoroughly and retain it for future reference. There is an
index at the end of this guide to assist you in finding
information.
Overview of this guide
This guide is for HF and telephone users of the
3033 Telephone Interconnect, installers, and system
administrators.
The daily operation of the 3033 Telephone Interconnect is
fully automated, and it can be plugged into the communication
system and operated at an unrestricted level immediately.
However, if you want to restrict access to the system, and
manage the types of calls that can be made by users, then a
system administrator must undertake some further setup
processes via the web interface.
This guide assumes that HF users are familiar with how to
make a Phone call from a Codan HF transceiver (see the
Getting Started Guide provided with the equipment), and that
telephone users understand how to follow voice prompts.
This guide assumes that installers are familiar with setting up
equipment via a web interface.
This guide assumes that system administrators are familiar
with planning and implementing HF communication networks
with Codan HF transceivers. System administrators must also
be familiar with setting up equipment via a web interface.

Overview
6 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide
General
The 3033 Telephone Interconnect provides a robust method of
communication between HF and a DTMF-capable public
telephone system.
A standard Codan 3033 telephone station comprises:
• a Codan HF transceiver with system capability (a
2010 RF Unit with a 2030 Junction Box, or a 2012 RF
Unit, or a 2110 Manpack Transceiver with an interface
adaptor)
• an antenna system
• an appropriate 12 V DC transceiver supply (supplies
transceiver and 3033)
• a 3033 Telephone Interconnect with a connection to a
DTMF-capable PSTN
• a telephone, if the 3033 is used in manual mode
A PC is required to access the web interface for setting up the
3033 and accessing the call log. It may be connected to the
3033 using either of the following methods:
• directly, with a crossover CAT5 Ethernet cable (see
Figure 8 on page 26 and Figure 9 on page 27), or
• remotely, with two line modems and two serial cables
(see Figure 10 on page 60)
The HF users and telephone users are managed separately via
the web interface. If required, you can allow or deny access to
the 3033 Telephone Interconnect for both types of users (see
page 75, Controlling access to the telephone interconnect).
You can also restrict the types of telephone calls that an HF
user can make through the 3033. For more information see
page 70, Setting up HF user access rights.
NOTE
Remote HF transceivers must be Codan
transceivers if voice encryption or frequency
hopping is used by the Codan HF transceiver at
the 3033 telephone station.

Typical layouts
The 3033 Telephone Interconnect is used in a fixed Codan
3033 telephone station. This station may be either controlled
directly, or via a remote control system.
Basic layout
In the basic layout, the 3033 Telephone Interconnect provides
a physical connection between a Codan HF transceiver and a
DTMF-capable PSTN, enabling a remote HF user to
communicate with a telephone user, and vice versa.

In the trunked layout, two or more basic layouts are connected
via an HF link. This enables two or more separate telephone
communication networks, which are not connected by any
standard telecommunications infrastructure, to communicate
via an HF link.
