CM-312A
CM-312AE
HYPERCARDIOID HEAD-WORN
CONDENSER MICROPHONE
The Crown CM-312A is a rugged,
ightweight head-worn microphone
designed for aerobics, ive entertain-
ment, and sports broadcasting. It is in-
tended for app ications that require a
ight, inconspicuous mic.
Because the microphone is to the side of
the mouth, breath pops are e iminated. The
sound of the CM-312A can be tai ored to
taste by moving the microphone c oser or
farther from the corner of the mouth.
The CM-312A sounds ike the best handhe d
microphones. Its hypercardioid pickup
pattern reduces feedback and aids iso ation.
In difficu t situations, the Crown CM-311A
headworn mic is recommended because it
picks up even ess feedback and eakage
than the CM-312A.
Designed for comfort, the headband fits
behind the head and disappears in use. Both
the headband and boom adjust to fit any
head. Because of the boom’s unique be-
hind-the-ear design, it does not cover up the
user’s face.
Two mode s are avai ab e: CM-312A and
CM-312AE. The CM-312A is powered by a
9V battery or phantom power. It has a
battery be t pack with a battery on/off
switch, a programmab e mic on/off switch,
and a “Mic On” LED. The CM-312AE has no
connector; you connect it to a wire ess
transmitter of your choice.
How to adjust for best fit
For best resu ts, the CM-312A MUST be
custom fitted to one wearer’s head. This
simp e procedure takes on y a few minutes.
P ease refer to Fig. 5 and ocate the parts
described.
1. If the microphone is for yourse f, we
suggest that you use a mirror to doub e
check the fit as you make adjustments.
2. Loosen (just a itt e) the thumbscrew
ocated on the outside of the foam b ock,
part way back on the boom. This a ows the
boom to s ide in and out, and to rotate eft
and right.
3. Now bend the headband wire to fit your
head. Put the foam-b ock wire behind your

ear. Then you can bend the earpieces to fit
snug y around your ears. The back of the
headband shou d fit firm y against the back
of your neck.
4. Next, adjust the foam pad snug against
your head or neck. To do this, bend the wire
that goes into the foam b ock. CAUTION!
Do not bend the boom itse f – just the foam-
b ock wire. A snug fit of the foam pad
prevents boom bounce when you move
around.
5. Be sure that the thumbscrew is sti oos-
ened a itt e. Position the mic to the side of
your mouth, about 1-inch (2.54 cm) in
front. To do this, move the boom in or out,
and eft or right. Move the mic up or down
by bending the foam-b ock wire.
Changing the mic position changes the ratio
of ows to highs. Adjust the position for the
sound you prefer. If you hear breath pops,
move the mic farther to the side of your
mouth (Fig. 5). Tighten the thumbscrew.
Once you’ve adjusted the headset, it shou d
remain in that position – no further adjust-
ments are needed.
When using the mic for aerobics, you’
need to keep the cab e in p ace. To do this,
attach the cab e to the c othes c ip (in-
c uded), and c ip it to the back of your shirt.
As shown in Fig. 6, be sure that the cab e
droops BELOW the c ip. That way, sweat
drips off the cab e instead of into the e ec-
tronics.
Additiona WS-7 foam pop fi ter and c othing
c ips can be ordered from Crown’s Parts
Department.
CM-312A Schematic
How to insert a battery in the CM-312A belt
pack
1. Access the battery by s iding open the
battery cover.
2. Insert a fresh 9V a ka ine battery (Ma ory
Durace MN9100 or equiva ent) into the
battery tray. The battery cover shows the
correct po arity.
3. Rep ace the battery cover. To pro ong bat-
tery ife, turn off the battery switch when not in
use.
If you’re using phantom power, and the battery
switch is on, the battery wi take over auto-
matica y if phantom power fai s.
After 85 hours of use, or if the sound is dis-
torted, it’s time to rep ace the battery.
How to program the mic on/off switch
The mic on/off switch can be programmed to
work in three ways:
* Push-on/push-off (as supp ied).
* Momentary on (push to ta k).
* Momentary off (cough button).
To change the switch operation, open the be t-
pack case by removing the three screws. Set
the switch as shown be ow:
