1. Safety and Environment
Read all safety and operating instructions before operating your new DVR
1.1 Environmental Considerations
-To prevent electric shock or other hazard, do not expose unit to rain, moisture, or dust.
-This unit should be located in an area with low humidity and a minimum of dust.
-Place this unit in a well-ventilated area and do not place heat-generating, or heavy
objects on this unit.
-This unit should not be located in an area where it is likely to be subjected to
mechanical shocks.
1.2 Before You Start
-Ensure the power is unplugged before installing the hard drive.
-Use the power cord provided with this unit. If replacing a power cord, ensure power
cord replacement meets, or exceeds the specifications on the power cord shipped with
the unit.
-Before initial operation or configuration, refer to hard drive installation instructions.
Use a standard ATA-100 hard drive (max. 250GB), and refer to the hard drive manual
for setting the hard drive to Master.
-Set the TIME/DATE after successfully installing a hard drive and powering on the unit
(see section 5.7).
-Always stop recording by pressing the STOP button on the front panel prior to
powering-off the unit.

5.1 Setup Main Menu
After installing a hard drive and connecting
power to the DVR, the system initiates a boot-
up procedure that starts with the HDD-check
sequence. If a hard drive is not detected, the
setup will display a message to install a hard
drive. If a new hard drive is detected, the
boot-up sequence will display the option to
format the hard drive. Choose FORMAT and
continue (note: all data on the hard drive will
be lost!). If an already formatted and
functioning hard drive is detected after an
accidental or intentional power loss, the DVR
will return to the last location and setting
before the power loss.
When the DVR successfully completes boot-up, it
first displays all connected cameras (if no cameras
are connected, the DVR displays “OFF” for each
channel in a the quad view). Press the “ Menu”
button on the front panel to enter the setup screen
(Press the “Stop” button first, if cameras are
currently recording). Use the “ Up” and “
Down” buttons on the front panel to scroll through
the menu items and press the “ Select” button
to choose the menu item to be edited. After
editing a menu item, press the “ Menu” button
again to save any edits made in the Setup menu,
and return to video display.

5.2 Camera Select and Record Select
The Camera Select and Record Select menu options work in conjunction with each other.
Choosing Camera Select (see 5.1 DVR Set-up Menu on page 4 to navigate and choose menu
options) will reset the camera channels to “_ _ _ _” (no cameras selected). Use the “ Select”
button to cycle through and activate the camera channels the DVR will recognize/activate (note that
by default the Record Select option will also be populated with the same camera channels as those
chosen in Camera Select mode). In addition to using the “ Select ” button to cycle through and
activate channels, the individual channel buttons (“CH1”, “ CH2”, “ CH3”, “ CH4 ”) on
the front panel can also be used for the same purpose.
NOTE: If a channel is not selected in the Camera Select menu option, that channel cannot be set
for recording options in the Record Select menu option.

5.3 Record Mode
Once the Camera Select and Record Select channels are defined, use the “ Down” button on the
front panel to move down to the Record Mode option. Press the “ Select ” button on the front
panel to edit the Record Mode option. There are only two Record Mode options available; “EACH”,
and “QUAD”. Use the “EACH” setting to record each channel in full screen, or use the “QUAD”
setting to record only in quad view. The “EACH” setting is more common, but reduces storage
space compared to the “QUAD” setting. If recording in QUAD mode, playback is displayed in a
quad view, and cannot be enlarged to a full screen view.
Example: If Camera Select is set for cameras 1,2,3, and 4, but Record Select is set for channels 2
and 4, the “EACH” setting in Record Mode will record channels 2 and 4 in full screen (during
playback, the user can choose the “CH3”, or “ CH4 ”button to display the recorded video in
full screen). Conversely, if the “QUAD” setting was active during recording, playback of recorded
video will display in quad view only.
5.4 Record Frame Rate
After choosing the desired Record Mode setting, use the “ Down” button on the front panel to
move down to the Record Frame Rate option. The default system frame rate is 25 frames per
second (fps). This is a global frame rate setting, which means that all cameras in the Record
Select option will record at this same rate (i.e., different frame rates for each recorded camera are
not available). Press the “ Select” button on the front panel repeatedly to set the global frame
rate to 30, 15, 10, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1. The typical setting is 7fps. NOTE: the higher the frame rate,
the more HDD storage used.
5. DVR Setup (cont’d)
5.5 Video (Recording) Quality
After choosing the desired global Frame Rate setting, use the “ Down” button on the front panel
to move down to the Video Quality option. Press the “ Select” button on the front panel to
change the Video Quality to “LOW”, “NORMAL”, or “HIGH”. These generic settings refer to the
Modified JEPG compression setting of 12K, 15k, or 20k bytes/frame, respectively.
In general terms, the higher the Video Quality setting, the more hard drive space consumed during
recording. A “NORMAL” setting is recommended, especially when all 4 channels are actively
recording.

5.6 Record Schedule
After choosing the desired global Video Quality setting, use the “ Down” button on the front panel
to move down to the Record Schedule option. Press the “ Select” button on the front panel to
display the Record Schedule screen.
The Record Schedule screen allows the user to set-up scheduled (“Timed”), Motion (“Auto”), or to
skip recording for a given time slot (“─”).
In the Record Schedule screen, use the “ Up” and “ Down” buttons on the front panel to move
the “▼” symbol positioned above each 1-hour segment to either the right, or left. Once the “▼”
symbol is positioned above a chosen 1-hour segment, press the “ Select ” button three times to
cycle between the “T”, “A”, or “, or “─” settings for that specific 1-hour slot. Press the “ Up” or
Down” button to save that setting and move to the next 1-hour segment. Repeat this process until
all the 1-hour time segments are marked with Timed (T), Automatic(A), or No recording (“─”).
Press the “ Menu” button on the front panel to save settings and return to the Main Menu.
Note: the Record Schedule settings are global, and therefore apply to all cameras/channels.
Recording options (“T”, “A”, or “, or “─”) for each hour in a 24-hour period apply to all cameras.
Recording schedules cannot be differentiated between cameras.

5.7 Sub Menu Functions
The Sub Menu option is found on the Main Menu under DVR setup. On the Main Menu screen,
use the “ Up” and “ Down” buttons on the DVR’s front panel to move to the “Sub Menu” option,
and press the “ Select ” button. Within the Sub Menu setting screen, use the “ Up” and “
Down” buttons and the “ Select ” button on the DVR’s front panel to choose any one of the five
Sub Menu functions.
Symbol legend:
“─”Camera(s) will not record during the
designated 1-hour time slot.
“T” (System Default) Cameras are “timed”
to record at the corresponding schedule.
“A” Cameras will record when motion is
detected (see “sensitivity settings” under
“Motion Setup” on Main Menu).
