Introduction

An enclosure containing physical disks accessed through EMMs (Enclosure Management Modules) is
called a storage enclosure. A storage enclosure includes various hardware components, such as physical
disks, EMM’s, fans, and power supplies.
One or more host servers attached to the storage enclosure can access the data on the storage
enclosure. You can also establish multiple physical paths between the host(s) and the storage enclosure
so that loss of any single path (for example, through failure of a host server port) does not result in loss of
access to data on the storage enclosure.
The storage enclosure is managed by the Storage Enclosure Management software running on a host
server. On the host server system, the management software and the storage enclosure communicate
management requests and event information using in-band SAS connections.
Terminology
• Storage Enclosure — When the MD3060e attached to a server directly or other MD3060e enclosures,
it is referred to as a Storage Enclosure. This document applies to the management of the MD3060e as
a Storage Enclosure.
• Expansion Enclosure — When the MD3060e is used as an MD3 (MD32/MD34/MD36/MD38) Series
Storage Array expansion it is referred to as an Expansion Enclosure. For documentation for the use of
the MD3060e as an Expansion Enclosure, please refer to the MD3 Series Storage Array Administrator’s
Guide. These documents can be found at dell.com/support.
This document familiarizes the user with the functions of the Storage Enclosure Management Software.
The Storage Enclosure Management Software is comprised of two major components:
• Storage Enclosure CLI (secli) — This component provides a command line interface (CLI) that is used
to obtain device and status information of storage enclosure components. This tool is also used for
firmware update of Enclosure Management Modules (EMMs) as well as hard drives and solid-state
drives within the enclosure.
• Storage Enclosure Monitor — This component runs continuously, monitoring and logging the status
of enclosure components, including EMMs, drives, power supplies and fan modules.
The document is organized into two major sections. The first section of this document describes the CLI
commands required to perform certain common task within the MD3060e. The second section is a
reference to all CLI commands ordered by type.

About the MD3060e Storage Enclosure
This chapter describes the storage enclosure concepts, which help in configuring and operating the Dell
MD3060e storage enclosure. The secli uses a number of terms to describe objects the software performs
actions on.

About Your Host
When connecting to a Dell PowerEdge Server:
• See the MD3060e Storage Enclosure Support Matrix for information on supported SAS Host-bus
Adapters (HBA’s).
• If the host is connected to the enclosure via multiple paths (2 or more SAS connections), the host
must have multipath configured properly. For more details on multipath configuration, please refer to
the documentation related to the operating system for the server.
The MD3060e Storage Enclosure is compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems. For more
details on the specific operating systems supported, please see dell.com/support.
Storage Enclosure Management Installation — Windows
MPIO (Multipath I/O)
You must configure Windows MPIO, for the Storage Enclosure Management Software to recognize the
hardware . See Microsoft documentation related to MPIO for configuration procedures.
NOTE: Dell recommends the Failover Only policy.
Windows Installation
1. Download the Storage Enclosure Management Software installation package from dell.com/support.
2. Run the command prompt as an Administrator.
NOTE: The command prompt must be an Administrator prompt for proper use of the CLI.
3. Navigate to the download directory of the installer:
4. Execute the installer
StorageEnclosureManagment_Install.exe
5. Follow the on-screen instructions and accept the End User License Agreement.
After successful installation you will be able to execute secli commands from the command prompt.
Silent Installation
1. Download the Storage Enclosure Management Software installation package from dell.com/support.
2. Run the command prompt as an Administrator.
NOTE: The command prompt must be an Administrator prompt for proper use of the CLI.
3. Navigate to the download directory of the extracted installer.
4. Run the installed program by running the command:
StorageEnclosureManagment_Install.exe –i silent
This command installs the Storage Enclosure Management Software with all the default settings. The
default installation directory is C:\Program Files\Dell\ StorageEnclosureManagment.
5. Accept all End User License Agreements.

6. To change the installation directory, uncomment and edit the following line in the
custom_silent.properties file:
#USER_INSTALL_DIR= C:\\Program Files\\Dell\\StorageEnclosureManagment
7. Execute the command:
StorageEnclosureManagment_Install.exe –f <path_of_custom.properties_file>
After successful installation, you can execute SECLI commands from the command prompt.
Uninstallation
Command Prompt
1. Run the command prompt as an Administrator.
2. Navigate to the installation directory.
The default directory is C:\Program Files\Dell\StorageEnclosureManagment.
3. Execute the uninstallation program, Uninstall_StorageEnclosureManagement.exe.
Windows Explorer
1. Navigate to Programs and Features in the Control Panel.
2. Click the program Storage Enclosure Management.
3. Click Uninstall.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstallation.
Storage Enclosure Management Installation — Linux
DMMP
For the Storage Enclosure Management Software to recognize the hardware properly, Linux Device
Mapper Multipath (DMMP) must be configured. See the Linux documentation for proper DMMP
configuration.
NOTE: Dell recommends the Failover Policy.
Linux Installation
NOTE: Linux installation requires full root user permissions.
NOTE: The libsnmp package must be installed before installation.
1. Download the Storage Enclosure Management Software installation package from dell.com/support.
2. Navigate to the directory containing the extracted installer.
3. Execute the command:
./StorageEnclosureManagement_Install
4. Follow the on screen directions and accept the End User License Agreement.
After successful installation, you will be able to execute secli commands from the console.

Silent Installation
NOTE: Linux installation requires full root user permissions.
1. Download the Storage Enclosure Management Software installation package from dell.com/support.
2. Navigate to the directory containing the extracted installer.
3. Execute the command:
./StorageEnclosureManagement_Install –i silent
This command installs the Storage Enclosure Management Software with all the default settings.
Accept all End User License Agreements. The default installation directory will be /opt/Dell/
StorageEnclosureManagement.
4. To change the installation directory, uncomment and edit the following line in the custom.properties
file:
#USER_INSTALL_DIR= /opt/Dell/StorageEnclosureManagement
5. Execute the command:
./ StorageEnclosureManagement_Install –f <path_of_custom.properties_file>
After successful installation, you can execute secli commands from the terminal.
Uninstallation
NOTE: Linux uninstallation requires full root user permissions
NOTE: The secli log file will remain after uninstallation.
NOTE: If the program was installed silently, the uninstallation will be silent as well.
1. Run the terminal and navigate to the installation directory.
The default directory is: /opt/Dell/StorageEnclosureManagement.
2. Execute the command:
./Uninstall_StorageEnclosureManagement.bin
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstallation.

Storage Enclosure Command Line
Interface
This guide is intended for system administrators, developers, and engineers who need to use the Storage
Enclosure Command Line Interface (secli) and its associated commands. For additional information, see
the hardware and software manuals that shipped with the system.
NOTE: CLI commands do not have interactive warnings for destructive commands.
NOTE: Always check for updates on dell.com/support and read the update first because they often
supersede the information in other documents.
The Storage Enclosure CLI is a software tool that enables storage installers, developers, and engineers to
monitor and update storage enclosures and drives. Using the command line interface, commands can be
issued from an operating system prompt, such as the Microsoft Windows command prompt or a Linux
operating system terminal.
The secli can be used to perform the following functions:
• Display status information about the objects in the system.
• Update storage device firmware (EMM, drives).
Software Object Tree
The secli performs actions on specific targets on the storage enclosure(s). The tree structure of the secli
allows the user to identify the devices the software will perform an action(s) on. A high level
representation of the object tree structure is shown below.

Adapter The LSI 9207-8e HBA’s installed on the local machine where the CLI tool is
being initiated
Drives(1) All physical disks that can be discovered by the specified adapter
EMM(1) All EMM’s that can be discovered by an adapter. This includes EMM’s in
multiple down chain enclosures
Enclosures The MD3060e storage enclosure
EMM(2) EMM’s contained in a single storage enclosure (up to 2)
Fans Cooling elements inside of the enclosures (up to 4)
Temperature sensors Thermometers in the storage enclosure(s) that give temperature readings
Voltage sensors Devices that read voltages in the storage enclosure
Power supplies Redundant units in the storage enclosure that supply power (up to 2)
Drives(2) All physical disks within a specified enclosure
Drawers A tray within the MD3060e containing up to 12 hard drives (5 drawers per
enclosure)
Drives(3) All physical disks within a drawer of an enclosure

Using The Command Line Interface
A CLI command consists of the following elements:
• Executable name — secli
• Command
• Path to the target
• Additional arguments
The following syntax is the general form of a CLI command:
secli command [path-to-target-object] {additional-arguments}
Where,
secli — invokes the command-line interface.
command — is the action the utility executes.
path-to-target-object — is the list of arguments that defines the target object command applies to.
Command Syntax Structure
The commands for the Storage Enclosure CLI have a number of required and optional input parameters.
Those parameters in turn can also have more than one valid value. However, each parameter can only
accept one valid value per command execution. This section outlines the symbols used in the syntax of
each command in this document and the syntax layout in the secli help.

Managing Your Storage Enclosure
To keep the EMM firmware and drives up-to-date, there are specific commands and procedures that
need to be executed. There are key commands that present crucial information needed for other
command to be executed properly.
NOTE: Ensure the console window is able to fit at least 150 characters per line to view the output
properly.
Identifying Installed HBAs
Many secli commands require a respective adapter as an input parameter. To get the proper values for
this parameter, execute the following command:
secli list adapters
The following output is displayed.
It is important to take note and record the values presented in the #column as this represents the
Adapter Index and also the SAS Addresses column for the respective supported HBA’s.
Identifying Enclosures and EMMs
Identifying Enclosures
For other management actions, you must provide information for a respective enclosure or EMM. These
values are presented with respect to a specific adapter value provided.
To identify the attached enclosures to a specific adapter, execute the following command:
secli list enclosures -a=<(SASAddress | AdapterIndex)>

For EMMs:
It is important to take note of the Enclosure Slot Index and the WWN (worldwide name) columns. These
values will be needed for required command parameters.
Identifying Drawers
To verify the status and number of drives in the drawers of an enclosure, execute the following
command:
secli list drawers -a=<(SASAddress | AdapterIndex)> -enc=<(WWN | EnclIndex)>

NOTE: Drawer 0 is the top drawer in the enclosure.
Identifying Drives
When identifying drives, there are additional optional parameters that be can included to narrow the
scope of the drives to obtain information from. Drives can be discovered from the adapter (all down
chain enclosures attached to a specified HBA), all the drives in a specific enclosure, or all the drives in a
specified drawer in a specified enclosure. To get information about all the drives visible to an adapter,
execute the following command:

The relevant information to record from the list drives command are the Enclosure Slot Index and
the WWN (Worldwide Name). These values are needed in order to perform actions on a specific drive
such as updating the firmware or blinking the drive.
Updating Drives
1. Download the latest firmware package from dell.com/support.
2. Stop all I/O between the server and the attached enclosure(s) containing the drive(s) you intend to
update.
3. Run the following command:
secli update drive -a=<(SASAddress | AdapterIndex)> -enc=<(WWN |
EnclIndex)> -w=<DrawerIndex> -d=<(WWN | EnclosureSlotIndex |
DrawerSlotIndex)> -file=<FW.FilePath>
NOTE: If the firmware file path contains spaces, enclose the filepath in quotes (“”) . For example,
–file=“C:\My Files\my firmware.fwh”.
NOTE: Only firmware files with the .fwh extension are supported for updating drives using the
secli.
A message prompts you about success or failure of the drive firmware update.

Updating EMM Firmware
1. Download the latest firmware package from dell.com/support.
2. Stop all I/O between the server and the attached enclosure(s) containing the EMM(s) you intend to
update.
NOTE: Once this update process begins, you may lose access to the drives or enclosures
connected to the update target. The EMM does not respond to commands again until it is back
online.
NOTE: If you have one or more storage enclosures in a daisy-chain, it is recommended to
update the EMM’s starting in the lowest tier of the chain and working back up to the top
enclosure.
3. Run the following command:
secli update emm -a=<(SASAddress | AdapterIndex)> -enc=<(WWN | EnclIndex)> -
emm=<(WWN | EMMIndex)> -file=<FW.FilePath>
NOTE: The progress of the firmware transfer is indicated in the console.
4. The EMM updates the firmware and reboots.
NOTE: This process may take up to 5 minutes.

Description
Helps visually locate the specified SCSI device by initiating a blink (or) terminating an existing blink session
