Base Cover

Removing the Base Cover

1. Ensure that the computer is turned off.

2. Remove the battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer).

3. Loosen the seven captive screws on the base cover and lift the cover off the computer at an angle as shown in the figure.


Replacing the Base Cover

1. Align the tabs on the base cover to the bottom of the computer.

2. Replace and tighten the seven captive screws on the base cover.

3. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it clicks into place.

Before You Begin

Recommended Tools
Before Working Inside Your Computer
This document provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that:
lYou have performed the steps in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lWhen replacing a component, you have already removed the original component, if installed.
Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
lSmall flat-blade screwdriver
lPhillips screwdriver
lSmall plastic scribe
lFlash BIOS update media (see the Dell Support website at support.dell.com)
Before Working Inside Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.


1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

2. Click Start , click the arrow , and then click Shut Down.
The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes.

3. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Disconnect any telephone or network cables from the computer.

5. Press and eject any installed cards from the ExpressCard slot and the 8-in-1 memory card reader.

6. Turn the computer over.

7. Slide the battery release latch until it clicks into place.

8. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not
covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such
as a connector on the back of the computer.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal
mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: When disconnecting a cable, pull on the cable's connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. For cable connectors with locking
tabs, press inward on the locking tabs to release the connector. When connecting a cable, ensure that the connectors are correctly oriented and
aligned to avoid damage to the connector and/or the connector's pins.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer, and then unplug it from the network wall jack.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you service the computer.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell
computers.


9. Turn the computer top side up, open the display, and press the power button to ground the system board.

Flashing the BIOS

If a BIOS-update program CD is provided with a new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS-update program CD, flash the BIOS
from the hard drive.

Flashing the BIOS From a CD

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly.

2. Insert the BIOS-update program CD and turn on the computer.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the
computer will automatically reboot.

3. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program.

4. Press <Alt> and <f> to reset the computer defaults.

5. Press <Esc>, select Save/Exit, and press <Enter> to save configuration changes.

6. Remove the flash BIOS-update program CD from the drive and restart the computer.

Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in, the main battery is properly installed, and a network cable is attached.

2. Turn on the computer.

3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com.

4. Click Download Now to download the file.

5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.
The File Download window appears.

6. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
The Save In window appears.

7. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.
The file downloads to your desktop.

8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears.
The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

NOTICE: Plug the AC adapter into a known, good power source to prevent loss of power. Failure to do so may cause system damage.
NOTE: If you use the BIOS-update program CD to flash the BIOS, press <F12> before inserting the CD so that you can set up the computer to boot from
a CD for one time only. Otherwise, you must enter the system setup program to change the default boot order.
NOTICE: Do not interrupt this process once it begins. Doing so may cause system damage.
NOTICE: Plug the AC adapter into a known, good power source to prevent loss of power. Failure to do so may cause system damage.
NOTICE: Do not interrupt this process once it begins. Doing so may cause system damage.

9. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.

USB/Audio Board

Removing the USB/Audio Board

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the optical drive (see Removing the Optical Drive).

3. Disconnect the two cables of the USB/Audio board from the connectors on the system board.

4. Remove the adhesive tapes from the cables securing it to the system board.

5. Remove the screw securing the USB/Audio board to the computer base cover and remove the board.

Replacing the USB/Audio Board

1. Connect the USB/Audio board cables to the system board connectors.

2. Place the USB/Audio board in position and replace and tighten the screw to secure the board.

3. Replace the optical drive (see Replacing the Optical Drive).

Removing the Camera Module

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

3. Loosen the two screws connecting the camera to the display cover.

4. Disconnect the camera cable and take out the camera module.

Replacing the Camera Module

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Replace and tighten the two screws securing the camera to the display cover.

3. Connect the camera cable to the connector.

4. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

Center Control Cover

Removing the Center Control Cover

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the two screws securing the center control cover from the battery bay.

3. Turn the computer over and open the display as far as possible.

4. Pry out the center control cover with your fingers starting from the battery bay location at the back of the system.

5. Ease the center control cover up.

6. Remove the keyboard surround by easing it out using a scribe (see Removing the Keyboard).

7. Remove the two screws from the top of the keyboard.
CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such
as a connector on the back of the computer).
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the
computer.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the data cable connected to the system board, ensure that you do not pull hard when you are lifting the center control
cover.

NOTICE: The key caps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the
keyboard.


8. Lift the keyboard and hold it up and slightly forward to access the media control buttons connector on the system board.

9. Disconnect the media control buttons cable from the connector on the system board.

Replacing the Center Control Cover

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Reconnect the media control buttons cable to the connector below the keyboard on the system board.

3. Align the tabs along the bottom of the keyboard and slide them under the palm rest.

4. Replace the keyboard surround.

5. Press on the corner edges near the top to snap the keyboard into place.

6. Replace the two screws on the top of the keyboard.

7. Slide the center control cover into the keyboard surround and press at both the edges of the cover until it snaps into place.

8. In the battery bay, replace the two screws that secure the center control cover.

Coin-Cell Battery

Removing the Coin-Cell Battery


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

3. Use a plastic scribe to pry up the coin-cell battery from the slot.

Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Hold the coin-cell battery with the positive side up.

3. Slide the coin-cell battery into the slot and gently press until it snaps to the slot.

Processor Module

Removing the Processor Module


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly).

3. To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.

4. Lift the processor module from the ZIF socket.

Replacing the Processor Module


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor module with the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket, then insert the processor module.
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.

NOTICE: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor thermal-cooling assembly. The oils in
your skin can reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads.
NOTICE: When removing the processor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor module.
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: Do not touch the processor die. Press and hold the processor down on the substrate on which the die is mounted while turning the cam screw
to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and processor.
NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor module. Seating the processor module properly in the ZIF
socket does not require force. A processor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the
microprocessor and ZIF socket.
NOTE: If a new processor is installed, you will receive a new thermal-cooling assembly, which will include an affixed thermal pad, or you will receive a
new thermal pad along with documentation to illustrate proper installation.

When the processor module is properly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the
others, the module is not seated properly.

3. Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor module to the system board.

4. Replace the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly).

5. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

3. In sequential order (indicated on the thermal-cooling assembly), loosen the four captive screws on the thermal-cooling assembly processor cover.

4. Loosen the two captive screws on the thermal-cooling assembly sink.

5. Disconnect the thermal-cooling assembly fan cable from the connector on the system board.

6. Remove the screw from the thermal-cooling assembly fan and take out the thermal-cooling assembly.

Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly


1. Align the four captive screws on the processor thermal-cooling assembly processor cover with the screw holes on the system board and tighten the
screws in sequential order.

2. Tighten the two captive screws securing the thermal-cooling assembly sink to the system board.

3. Replace and tighten the screw to secure the thermal-cooling assembly fan to the system board.

4. Connect the thermal-cooling assembly fan cable to the system board.

5. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

Removing the Display Assembly


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the base cover(see Removing the Base Cover).

3. Disconnect the antenna cables from the Mini-Card.

4. Lift the antenna cables from the securing tabs and release them from the routing channel.

5. Remove the two screws securing the display assembly from the bottom of the computer.

6. Remove the center control cover (see Removing the Center Control Cover).

7. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.

8. Disconnect the display data cable from the connector on the system board, loosen the captive screw, and release the cable from the securing plastic
tabs.

9. Disconnect the camera cable from the system board, loosen the captive screw, and release it from the securing plastic tabs.

10. Disconnect the display power cable from the connector on the system board and release it from the securing plastic tabs.

11. Pull the antenna cables from the routing hole and release them from the routing channel.

12. Remove the two screws from the display assembly hinges.

13. Lift the display assembly out of the computer.

Replacing the Display Assembly


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Align the display hinges with the holes in the base of the computer and then lower the display into place.

3. Replace and tighten the two display assembly hinge screws.

4. Slide the antenna cables through the routing hole to the base of the computer.

5. Connect the display power cable to the connectors on the system board.

6. Connect the display data and camera cables to the connector on the system board and tighten the captive screws to secure the cables.

NOTE: Ensure that the display and camera cables are properly routed and secured beneath the plastic tabs.


7. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

8. Replace the center control cover (see Replacing the Center Control Cover).

9. Close the display and turn the computer over.

10. Replace and tighten the two screws securing the display assembly to the bottom of the computer.

11. Replace the Mini-Card and connect the antenna cables to it (see Replacing the Mini-Card).

12. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
Display Bezel

Removing the Display Bezel



1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly).

3. Gently push the display bezel outwards on each of the four sides to release the bezel from the display panel.

Replacing the Display Bezel


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Starting at any corner, use your fingers to gently snap the bezel into place to secure it to the display panel.

3. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly).
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
CAUTION: The following instructions are not applicable to Edge-to-Edge display panels, which should not be disassembled.
NOTICE: Removal of the bezel from the display bottom cover requires extreme care to avoid damage to the bezel and the display panel.

NOTE: In some computers, the display bezel might have double-sided tape on both ends. To reuse the tape, carefully remove the bezel.

Display Panel

Removing the Display Panel



1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly).

3. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

4. Remove the four screws securing the display panel to the cover.

5. Disconnect the cables from the connectors on each end of the inverter.

6. Lift the display panel out of the display cover.

7. Remove the four screws (two on each side of the display panel) securing the brackets to the display panel and remove the brackets.
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
CAUTION: The following instructions are not applicable to Edge-to-Edge display panels, which should not be disassembled.

8. Turn over the display panel and remove the conductive tape on the display board.

9. Disconnect the display cable from the display board.

Replacing the Display Panel


1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Replace the four screws (two on each side of the display panel) to secure the display brackets to the display panel.

3. Connect the display cable to the board at the back of the display panel.

4. Connect the power cables to the connectors on both ends of the inverter.

5. Align the screw holes on the display bracket with the corresponding screw holes and guide pins on the top cover and gently lower the display panel into
place.

6. Replace the four screws that secure the display panel to the cover.

7. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

8. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly).

