Removing the Audio Board
1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.
2. Press and eject any installed cards from the ExpressCard slot and the 8-in-1 memory card reader.
3. Remove any installed memory modules and Mini-Cards (see Memory and Communication Cards).
4. Follow the instructions in Removing the Palm Rest.
5. Remove the screw that secures the audio board and disconnect the audio board cable from the connector on the system board.
6. Lift the audio board and the cable out of the computer base.
Replacing the Audio Board
1. Place the audio board in the computer base and replace the screw that secures it.
2. Connect the audio board cable to the connector on the system board.
3. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Palm Rest.
4. Reinstall the memory modules and Mini-Cards, if any.
5. Reinstall any removed cards in the ExpressCard and 8-in-1 card slots.

Removing the Base Cover
1. Ensure that the computer is turned off.
2. Remove the battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer).
3. Loosen the eight captive screws on the base cover and lift the cover off the computer at an angle as shown in the figure.
Replacing the Base Cover
1. Align the tabs on the base cover to the bottom of the computer.
2. Replace and tighten the eight captive screws on the base cover.
3. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it clicks into place.

Removing the Battery Latch Assembly
1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
2. Remove the center control cover (see Removing the Center Control Cover).
3. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).
4. Remove the display assembly (see Display Assembly).
5. Remove the hard drive (see Removing the Hard Drive).
6. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest).
7. Remove the system board (see Removing the System Board).
8. Remove the charger board (see Removing the Charger Board).
9. Remove the three screws that secure the battery latch assembly to the computer base.
10. Remove the spring from the hook that holds it in place.
11. Lift the assembly out of the computer base.
Replacing the Battery Latch Assembly
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface
(such as the back panel) on the computer.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer) before working
inside the computer.

1. Place the latch assembly in the channel on the computer base.
2. Using a small screwdriver, place the spring over the hook on the computer base.
3. Replace the three screws.
Ensure that the newly installed latch moves smoothly and freely when pushed and released.
4. Replace the charger board (see Replacing the Charger Board).
5. Replace the system board (see Replacing the System Board).
6. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest).
7. Replace the hard drive (see Replacing the Hard Drive).
8. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly).
9. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
10. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).
11. Replace the center control cover (see Replacing the Center Control Cover).
12. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

Recommended Tools
Turning Off Your Computer
Before Working Inside Your Computer
This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the
following conditions exist:
lYou have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lA component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
lSmall flat-blade screwdriver

Turning Off Your Computer
1. Save and close all open files and exit all open programs.
2. In Windows Vista®, click Start , click the arrow , and then click Shut Down.
The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes.
3. Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut
down your operating system, press and hold the power button for at least 8 to 10 seconds until the computer turns off.
Before Working Inside Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety.
1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.
2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer).
NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.
CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best
practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal
mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is
not covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking
tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep
them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented
and aligned.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.
3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions.
4. Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer.
5. Press and eject any installed cards from the ExpressCard slot and the 8-in--1 memory card reader.
6. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
7. Turn the computer over.
8. Slide and click the battery latch release.
9. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
10. Press the power button to ground the system board.

NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you service the computer.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for
other Dell computers.

Flashing the BIOS From a CD
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive
If a BIOS-update program CD is provided with the new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS-update program CD, flash the
BIOS from the hard drive.
Flashing the BIOS From a CD
1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly.
2. Insert the BIOS-update program CD, and restart the computer.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the
computer will automatically reboot.
3. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program.
4. Press <Alt> and <F> to reset the computer defaults.
5. Press <Esc>, select Save changes and reboot, and press <Enter> to save configuration changes.
6. Remove the flash BIOS-update program CD from the drive and restart the computer.
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive
1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in, the main battery is properly installed, and a network cable is attached.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com.
4. Click Download Now to download the file.
5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.
The File Download window appears.
6. Click Save this program to disk and then click OK.
The Save In window appears.
7. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.
The file downloads to your desktop.
8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears.
The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.
9. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.
2. Follow the instructions in Display Assembly.
3. Remove the display bezel (see Display Bezel).
4. Pull the camera cable pull-tab to disconnect it from the connector on the camera board.
5. Remove the two screws securing the camera board.
6. Remove the camera board.
Replacing the Camera
1. Align the camera board over the screw holes.
2. Replace the two screws that secure the camera board to the display.
3. Connect the camera cable to the connector on the display board.
4. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).
5. Follow the instructions inReplacing the Display Assembly.

Removing the Center Control Cover
1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.
2. Turn the computer over and remove the screw that secures the center control cover to the computer base.
3. Turn the computer top side up, and open the display as far as it will open.
4. Ease the center control cover up with a plastic scribe from the back of the computer.
5. Ease the center control cover up until you see the media control buttons cable that attaches the center control cover to the system board.
6. Release the connector latch that secures the cable to the connector on the center control cover and remove the cable.
7. Lift the center control cover off the computer.

1. Slide the media control buttons cable into the connector on the center control cover until it is in position and pull down on the connector latch that
secures the cable to the connector.
2. Align the hooks beneath the center control cover and snap the cover in place.
3. Turn the computer over and replace the screw that secures the center control cover to the computer base.
4. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

Removing the Coin-Cell Battery
1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.
2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).
3. Use a plastic scribe to push the coin cell battery forward and upward to release it from the slot.
Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery
1. Replace the coin cell battery with the positive (+) side facing upwards.
2. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
3. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

Removing the Processor
1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.
2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).
3. Remove the processor heat sink (see Removing the Processor Heat Sink).
4. To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.
The ZIF-socket cam screw secures the processor to the system board. Take note of the arrow on the ZIF-socket cam screw.
5. Use a processor extraction tool to remove the processor.
Installing the Processor
CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface
(such as a connector on the back of the computer).
NOTICE: To prevent intermittent contact between the ZIF-socket cam screw and the processor when removing or replacing the processor, press
to apply slight pressure to the center of the processor while turning the cam screw.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver such that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.
NOTICE: When removing the processor, pull it straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor.
NOTICE: To prevent intermittent contact between the ZIF-socket cam screw and the processor when removing or replacing the processor, press
to apply slight pressure to the center of the processor while turning the cam screw.

1. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor so that it points to the triangle on the ZIF socket, and insert the processor into the ZIF socket.
When the processor is correctly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the processor are higher than the
others, the processor is not seated correctly.
2. Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor to the system board.
3. Peel the backing off the thermal cooling pad and adhere the pad to the portion of the processor heat sink that covers the processor.
4. Replace the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink).
5. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
6. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.
7. Update the BIOS using a flash BIOS-update program CD. See (Flashing the BIOS).

NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor. Seating the processor properly in the ZIF socket does
not require force.
NOTICE: A processor that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the processor and ZIF socket.

Removing the Processor Heat Sink
1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.
2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).
3. Loosen the three captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board.
4. Lift the processor heat sink off the computer.
Replacing the Processor Heat Sink
1. Peel the backing off the thermal cooling pad and adhere the pad to the portion of the heat sink that covers the processor.
2. Place the processor heat sink on the system board.
3. Tighten the three captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board.
4. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
5. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

NOTE: The original pad can be reused if the original processor and heat sink are reinstalled together. If either the processor or heat sink is replaced,
use the thermal pad provided in the kit to ensure that thermal conductivity is achieved.
NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have already removed the processor heat sink and are ready to replace it.

Removing the Display Assembly
1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.
2. Remove the Center Control Cover (see Removing the Center Control Cover).
3. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).
4. Remove the Mini-Card cables from the Mini-Cards, if applicable (see Wireless Mini-Cards).
5. Make note of the cable routing and carefully dislodge the Mini-Card antenna cables from their routing guides.
6. Turn the computer over.
7. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).
8. Make note of the cable routing and carefully dislodge the Mini-Card antenna cables from their routing guides and pull the cables out through the system
board so that they are clear of the computer base.
9. Pull the display cable pull-tab to disconnect the display cable from the display connector on the system board.
10. Disconnect the optional camera cable and Wi-Fi Sniffer/Power Button Board cable connector from the system board.

11. Make note of the cable routing and carefully dislodge the cables from their routing guides.
12. Remove the three screws from each side of the display assembly.
13. Remove the display assembly.
Replacing the Display Assembly
1. Place the display assembly in position and replace the three screws on each side.
2. Route the optional camera cable, Wi-Fi Sniffer/Power Button Board cable, and display cable through the routing guides and connect the cable connectors
to the system board.
3. Make note of the cable routing and carefully slide the Mini-Card antenna cables through the system board and into their routing guides.
4. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).
5. Replace the center control cover (see Replacing the Center Control Cover).
6. Turn the computer over.
7. Make note of the cable routing and carefully insert the Mini-Card antenna cables through their routing guides.
8. Reconnect the Mini-Card cables to the Mini-Cards, if applicable (see Wireless Mini-Cards).
9. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).
