4350 systems are feature-rich, enterprise-class server
systems that use Intel
®
Pentium
®
II microprocessor(s) with MMX
technology
and incorporate a high-performance PCI local bus.
PowerEdge 4350 systems have been rack-optimized and designed for better
serviceability and increased reliability. The two panel doors on top of the chas-
sis allow easy access to the system board for performingmicroprocessor,
memory, and expansion-card upgrades. The Dell-designed SCSI backplane
board and the hard-disk drive carriers eliminate the extensive cabling and drive
configuration usually required for a SCSI subsystem. The plastic drive rails on
the CD-ROM drive allow you to remove the drive without removing a single
screw.
A PowerEdge 4350 system can contain up totwo Pentium II microprocessors.
Each microprocessor is housed in a single-edge contact (SEC) cartridge/heat
sink assembly mounted in a guide bracket on the system board, allowing for
greater heat dissipation.

In addition to the standard features found in a traditional personal computer,
Dell PowerEdge 4350 systems include the following new andadvanced
features:
One or two Intel Pentium II microprocessors with an internal operating fre-
quency of 350, 400, or 450 megahertz (MHz)and an external bus speed of
100 MHz.
The Pentium II microprocessor includes MMXtechnology designed to
handle complex multimedia and communications software. Thismicro-
processor incorporates new instructions and data types as well as a
technique called single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) that allows the
microprocessor to process multiple data elements in parallel, thereby
improving overall system performance.
A secondary (L2) cache of 512KB of SRAM is included within the SEC
cartridge that contains the microprocessor. Math coprocessor functionality
is internal to the microprocessor.
Support for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) is available by installing a
second Pentium II microprocessor.SMP greatly improves overall system
performance by dividing microprocessor operations among the

independent microprocessors. To take advantage of this feature, you must
use an operating system that supports multiprocessing, such as
Microsoft®Windows NT® 4.0 or Novell®NetWare®(also known as
IntranetWare) 4.11 (and later versions)operating systems.
NOTE: If you decide to upgrade your system by installing an additional
microprocessor, you must order the microprocessor upgrade kit from
Dell. Not all versions of the Pentium II microprocessor will work properly
as an additional microprocessor. The upgrade kit from Dell contains the
correct version of the microprocessor for use as an additional micro-
processor, as well as instructions for performing the upgrade. The second
microprocessor must have the same internal operating frequency as the
first.
A minimum of 64 MB of system memory, upgradable to a maximum of
2 GB by installing combinations of 64-or 128-MB unbuffered SDRAM in
DIMMs or 256- or 512-MB registered SDRAM DIMMs in the4 DIMM sock-
ets on the system board. You cannot mix unbuffered SDRAM and
registered SDRAM in the system.
A BIOS that resides in flash memory on the Industry-Standard Architecture
(ISA) bus and can be upgraded if required.
Up to three, hot-pluggable, 1-inch,SCSI hard-disk drives.
Two or three 275-W power supplies. A power-supply paralleling board
(PSPB) is provided for the multiple, hot-pluggable power supplies.
NOTE: A minimum configuration of two power supplies is nonredundant.
To ensure redundancy, you must use three power supplies.
Four redundant system cooling fans housed in a single hot-swappable
module.
The system board includes the followingintegrated features:
Six PCI and two ISA expansion-card connectors. PCI slots 1 through 4 are
unshared slots; PCI slot 5 is shared with ISA slot 5 and PCI slot 6 is shared
with ISA slot 6.
An accelerated graphics port (AGP) video subsystem based on the ATI 3D
Rage Pro super video graphics array (SVGA) video controller. This video
subsystem contains 2 MB of SGRAM video memory (nonupgradeable).
Maximum resolutions are 1280 x 1024 with 256 colors, noninterlaced. The
1024 x 768 resolution provides 65,536 colors, noninterlaced, and the
800 x 600 and 640 x 480 resolutions provide 16.7 million colors for true
color graphics.
A National Semiconductor PC87309 superI/O controller that controls the
bidirectional parallel port, two serial ports, and the diskette drive in the
externally accessible front bay.
The parallel port can be set to operate in the following modes via theParal-
lel Mode option in the System Setup program: output-only (AT-compatible) or
bidirectional (Personal System/2 [PS/2]-compatible).
One Adaptec AIC-7890 Ultra2/low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI host
adapter that supports up tothree, 1-inch, internal SCSI hard-disk drives via

a SCSI backplane board and SCSI hard-disk drive carriers. The SCSI
backplane automatically configures SCSI ID numbers and SCSI termination
on individual hard-disk drives, greatly simplifying drive installation.
A 1 x 3 SCSI backplane board supports hot-pluggable SCSI hard-disk drive
installation and removal when used in conjunction with the PowerEdge
Expandable RAID Controller 2 or the PowerEdge Expandable RAID Control-
ler 2/SC product.
An Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra/Narrow SCSI-3 host adapter that supports the
CD-ROM drive.
Server management circuitry that monitors operation of the system fans
as well as critical system voltages and temperatures. The server manage-
ment circuitry works in conjunction with the HP OpenView Network Node
Manager Special Edition (NNM SE) and the Dell OpenManage Hardware
Instrumentation Package (HIP) software package.
System board support for the Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant when
the optional Dell Remote Assistant Card version 2.0 (DRAC 2) is installed,
which provides additional local and remote server management.
A PS/2-style keyboard port and a PS/2-compatible mouse port.
Standard PowerEdge 4350 systems include a 3.5-inch diskette drive in an
externally accessible bay, a SCSI CD-ROM drive in an externally accessible bay,
and a SCSI hard-disk drive in slot 0.
For a complete list of system features, see Technical Specifications found later in
this chapter.
When following the text in this manual, assume that the location or direction
relative to the computer is as shown in Figure 1-1. Figures 1-2 through 1-4
illustrate front-panel, back-panel, and interior features of the PowerEdge4350

Two panel doors on the top of the system provide access to the system board,
microprocessors, and expansion cards. The right panel door provides access to
the expansion slots; the left panel door opens to the microprocessor and
memory board (see Figure 1-5). The doors interlock so that the keylock on the
right-side panel door secures both doors and the fan assembly.
Follow these steps to open the computer panel doors:
1. If necessary, unlock the right panel door (see Figure 1-5).
2. Press the two slide latches to release the right top door and lift the door.
3. Lift the left door.
When closing the panel doors, close the left door first and then the right door
so that the right door overlays the left door. The doors must be in this position
for the keylock to secure both doors properly.

The PowerEdge 4350 system is unique in that live AC power is routed inside
the system. An AC routing cable (
not the same cable as the AC power cable in
the next section) connects to the power receptacle at the back of the system
and runs along the inside of the left chassis wall to the PSPB (see Figure 4-13).
WARNING: The PSPB in the PowerEdge4350 system connects to live AC
power via the AC routing cable. Before removing or servicing the system,
it is critical to make certain that AC power is disconnected from the back
of the system.

To prevent accidental removal of the AC power cable from the power recepta-
cle at the back of the chassis, a cable retainer maintains a slack loop that
protects the connection. The retainer can be either a metal clip attached to the
AC power receptacle (see Figure 1-6) or a plastic cable clamp that secures the
cable to the back of the chassis.


For a system that uses the metal securing clip, before removing the AC power
cable you must swivel the clip away from the cable as shown in Figure 1-6. For
a system that uses a plastic cable clamp, the AC power cable can be removed
from the system without opening thecable clamp.

The interface cables inside the chassis must be routed correctly to ensure that
the fan assembly (positioned over the cables) has room to fit fully into the
chassis. If you need to disconnect and remove any interface cables from the
system board, be sure to reinstall the cables in the order shown in Table 1-1,
with the first cable at the bottom.

System memory has a minimum of 64 MB of 72-bit-wide, unbuffered memory.
The system memory capacity can be expanded up to 2 GB by using combina-
tions of 64- and 128-MB unbuffered SDRAM DIMMs or 256- and 512-MB
registered ECC SDRAM DIMMs.
NOTE: DIMMs must be rated to run at 100 MHz.
The system board has four 168-pin DIMM sockets. The DIMMs do not have to
be inserted in pairs. The socket population guidelines are as follows:
Populate the DIMM sockets in order from DIMM_A (right) to DIMM_D
(left).
The largest-capacity DIMM should be in socket DIMM_A, with smaller-
capacity DIMMs installed in decreasing sizes toward socket DIMM_D.
Unbuffered and registered DIMMs
cannot be mixed. Remove any 64- or
128-MB unbuffered DIMMs before installing 256- or 512-MB registered
DIMMs.
DIMMs support the ECC feature, which detects memory errors and cor-
rects single-bit memory errors. The ECC feature provides more reliable
memory and less downtime. The ECC feature is built into the memory con-
troller on the system board.

The computers six expansion-card slots can accommodate a mix of 32-bit PCI
cards and 8- and 16-bit ISA cards.
The system board contains six PCI expansion-card connectors and two ISA
expansion-card connectors (see Figure 1-18).
Two expansion slots are shared by one PCI expansion-card connector and one
ISA expansion-card connector, so a maximum of six expansion cards can be
installed. Connectors PCI1 through PCI6 support 32-bit PCI cards (see
Figure 1-18). Connectors ISA5 and ISA6 support 8- and 16-bit ISA cards.

The video subsystem is built into the system board and consists of aPCI
VGA-compatible video subsystem with an ATI 3D Rage Pro SVGA video
controller. The video subsystem contains 2 MB of SGRAM video memory,

256 colors, noninterlaced. The 1024 x 768 resolution provides 65,536 colors,

Through a 68-pin cable connection from the system board to the SCSI
backplane board, one integrated Adaptec AIC-7890Ultra2/LVD SCSI host
adapter supports up to three 1-inch SCSI hard-disk drives. The SCSI backplane
board automatically configures SCSI ID numbers and SCSI termination on
individual hard-disk drives, greatly simplifying drive installation. The integrated
SCSI controller resides on the PCI local bus for optimum performance.
An integrated Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra/Narrow SCSIhost adapter attached to
the PCI bus supports the CD-ROM drive through a 50-pin connector on the
system board. The SCSI cable has an active terminator installed at the end of
the cable.

Dell PowerEdge 4350 systems include a SCSI backplane board, which greatly
simplifies cabling and configuration for SCSI hard-disk drives. SCSIID and
termination for SCSI hard-disk drives are both configured by the SCSI
backplane board, rather than on individual drives.
NOTE: For maximum performance, install Ultra2/LVD drives exclusively.
Although you can install a mixture of Ultra2/LVD and Ultra hard-disk drives,
they will operate at the slower Ultra transfer rate.

SCSI hard-disk drives are supplied by Dell in special drive carriers that fit in the
front-loading drive bays. The Dell defaults for SCSI hard-disk drives are as

Disable termination on the drive. The SCSI backplane board provides
termination for the SCSI bus.
Set the SCSI ID on the drive to 0. All hard-disk drive SCSI ID numbers are
set by the SCSI backplane board.
Configure the drives so that the drive motors wait for a start unit
command from the SCSI host adapter before spinning.

The two or three redundant power supplies are installed vertically in a row at
the front of the chassis. If the system has two power supplies, a power bay
plug is installed in the unused power supply connector. The power supplies
can be installed and lifted out of the unit using a handle that rotates upward.
(To release the handle, press on it until it pops up; to secure it, press it down
until it clicks into place.) When fully installed, a power supply automatically
mates with a connector on the PSPB, which lies under the power supplies.
The PSPB controls the power supplies and supplies them with AC power via
the AC routing cable.
Two indicators on the top of each power supply (see Figure 1-8) signal the
status of the power supply. Both indicators light briefly during initial system
start-up; the green status indicator stays on to show that the power supply is
operating normally. The red fault indicator turns off after initial system start-up
is complete. If it lights any time after system start-up, a fault is indicated in the
power supply and the power supply should be replaced.

The power supplies can operate from an AC power source of90 to 265 VAC at
47 to 63 Hz. They provide the DC operating voltages and currents listed in
Table 1-2.
NOTE: The power supplies produce DC voltages only under their loaded
condition. Therefore, when you measure these voltages, thepower supplies
must be connected to the PSPB, and the DC power cable harnesses must be
connected to the PSPB and to their corresponding system loads (the system
board, SCSI backplane board,and so forth).

The PSPB receives input from the AC power source and distributes it to the
power supplies. The power supplies return DC power to the PSPB, which in
turn distributes redundant DC power to the system board, SCSI backplane, fan
assembly, and external drive bays. Through embedded server management
(ESM), the PSPB can also be used to perform such tasks as detecting the
presence of one to three power supplies; monitoring voltage and current
outputs from the power supplies; voltage going to the system board and fan
RPMs; and supporting the SMB_ALERT protocol used by the server manage-
ment bus (SMB).
The PSPB sits under the power supplies, which automaticallyconnect to the
PSPB when they are installed. For information on removing and replacing the
PSPB, see Power-Supply Paralleling Board in Chapter 4.
