Handling the battery cartridge
• Never disassemble or heat the battery
artridge, nor put it into fire or water;
doing so ould ause battery-rupture or
leakage of battery fluid, resulting in a
fire or bodily injury.

Handling the CU
• If smoke, abnormal odors or noises ome from the CU, immediately
unplug the AC adapter from the wall so ket and onta t your nearest
dealer.
Failure to do so ould ause fire or ele tri al sho k.
• If foreign material or water gets into the CU, immediately unplug the
AC adapter from the wall so ket and onta t your nearest dealer.
Failure to do so ould ause fire or ele tri al sho k.
• If you drop the CU so as to damage its housing, immediately unplug
the AC adapter from the wall so ket and onta t your nearest dealer.

• Never use the CU for harging anything other than the spe ified
battery artridges.
Doing so ould ause heat, battery-rupture, or fire.
• Never bring any metals into onta t with the output terminals.
Doing so ould produ e a large urrent through the CU, resulting in
heat or fire, as well as damage to the CU.
• Use the dedi ated AC adapter only. Failure to do so ould result in a
fire.
• Never use the CU on the line voltage other than the spe ified level.
Doing so ould ause the CU to break or burn.
• If the power ord of the AC adapter is damaged (e.g., exposed or
broken lead wires), stop using it and onta t your nearest dealer.
Failure to do so ould result in a fire or ele tri al sho k.

Moisture or dust will get into the BHT,

CAUTION
• If you drop the BHT so as to damage its hous-
ing, immediately turn off the power, pull out
the dry batteries or the battery artridge, and
onta t your nearest dealer.
Failure to do so ould ause smoke or fire.
• For those ma hines using the dry battery artridge, do not mistake
the plus and minus marks when loading dry batteries into the ar-
tridge.
Failure to do so ould ause battery-rupture or leakage of battery
fluid, resulting in bodily injury, fire, or property damage.
• For those ma hines using the dry battery artridge, do not use any-
thing other than the spe ified type of batteries, nor use new and old
batteries together.
Doing so ould ause battery-rupture or leakage of battery fluid,
resulting in bodily injury, fire, or property damage.
• Do not use batteries or power sour es other than the spe ified ones;
doing so ould generate heat or ause malfun tion.
• In environments where stati ele tri ity an build into signifi ant
harges (e.g., if you wipe off the resin plate with a dry loth), do not
operate the BHT. Doing so will result in malfun tion or ma hine
failure.
• When onne ting or dis onne ting the dire t- onne t interfa e able
to/from the BHT, do not plug or unplug it at an angle and do not pull
the able strongly. Doing so will result in a ma hine failure.
• If the BHT has been stored in a hot (50˚C to 60˚C, 122˚F to 140˚F) and
humid pla e, allow it to sit at room temperature and humidity for at
least one day before use. Using the BHT with its inside being hot will
fail to s an or result in a ma hine failure.

CAUTION
Handling the CU
• If you will not be using the CU for a long time, be sure to unplug the
AC adapter from the wall so ket for safety.
Failure to do so ould result in a fire.
• When aring for the CU, unplug the AC adapter from the wall so ket
for safety.
Failure to do so ould result in an ele tri al sho k.
• Never over or wrap up the CU or AC adapter in a loth or blanket.
Doing so ould ause the unit to heat up inside, deforming its hous-
ing, resulting in a fire.
Always use the CU and AC adapter in a well-ventilated area.
• Do not pla e the CU anypla e where it may be subje ted to oily
smoke or steam, e.g., near a ooking range or humidifier.
Doing so ould result in a fire or ele tri al sho k.
• Keep the power ord away from any heating equipment.
Failure to do so ould melt the sheathing, resulting in a fire or
ele tri al sho k.
• Do not insert or drop foreign materials su h as metals or anything
inflammable through the openings or vents into the CU.
Doing so ould result in a fire or ele tri al sho k.

■ Proper Care of the BHT and CU
Clean the housing and the battery artridge terminals with a dry, soft loth. Before
leaning, be sure to power off the BHT and unplug the AC adapter of the CU.
• Never use benzene, al ohol, or other or-
gani solvents. The housing may be
marred or the paint may ome off.
• Never rub or strike the liquid rystal dis-
play (LCD) with anything hard. The LCD
surfa e will be easily s rat hed or bro-
ken.
• When leaning the keypad, do not s rub
the surfa e too hard, and do not pull on
the keys. Doing so may break the keys
or ause the keypad to dislo ate.
• If the BHT or CU be omes smudged, moisten a soft loth with neutral detergent and
wring it out thoroughly. Wipe the BHT or CU with the loth and then go over it
again with a dry loth.
Dust or dirt a umulating on the lear plate of the bar- ode reading window will affe t
reading performan e. If you use the BHT in dusty areas, therefore, periodi ally he k
the lear plate of the bar- ode reading window and lean it if dusty.
• To lean the plate, first blow the dust away with an air brush. Then wipe the plate
with a otton swab or the similar soft one gently.
• If sand or hard parti les have a umulated, never rub the plate; doing so will
s rat h or damage it. Blow the parti les away with an air brush or a soft brush.

• If the BHT fails to read due to spe ular effe ts or other
fa tors, hange the s anning angle of the reading win-
dow or the distan e from odes as shown at right, and
try it again. (Spe ular effe ts o ur when the refle -
tion of the light from the bar ode be omes ex es-
sively strong. This an easily happen when the re-
fle ting surfa e is polished or overed with vinyl.)
• The BHT an read bar odes at a maximum distan e of 40 m (15.7")** from the
bar- ode reading window. (**For details about the s anning onditions, refer to
Appendix A.)
• The bar ode reading pro edure may differ depending upon the appli ation
used, so follow the appli ation's manual.
•
Before reading bar codes, clean those labels if stained.
•
Avoid using the BHT in direct sunlight. The BHT might fail to read correctly.
•
To read bar codes on curved surfaces, align the center of the reading window with
that of the target bar code.
•
When you pull the bar-code reading window away from the bar codes, the actual
scanning range will become narrower than the range covered by the illumination
LED.
•
The light intensity of the illumination LED will vary depending upon the scanning
conditions and variation of their elements.
1.1 Reading Bar Codes
Turn on the BHT power, bring the bar- ode reading window to the bar ode to be
s anned, and press the trigger swit h. The BHT turns on the illumination LED and
reads the bar ode. Keep the BHT in a position where the bar ode lies within the
illumination range.
When the BHT has read the bar ode su essfully, the indi ator LED will illuminate in
green.

1.2 Setting and Using the Hand Strap

Put your hand through the hand strap and hold the BHT as shown below. This will
prevent you from dropping the BHT a identally.
