The complicated case of the Tread 1 has been
designed with a remarkable sealing system requiring
nine different custom molded o-rings. Each o-ring has
been deliberately placed to prevent water penetration
through the connection of the eight complex case
components and four mounting screws. This sealing
system will prevent humidity, rain, and light splashing
water from penetrating into the watch. The open
viewing lens does not allow for a sealing method that
can be guaranteed to a specific water depth. This
complete sealing system may save your investment
should your watch be accidentally submerged,
however Devonworks advises that you remove
your watch before showering, swimming, or
any other activity that may cause your watch to
become wet. In order to avoid damage to the watch,
please never operate the crown when it is wet.

BATTERY
LifE indiCatOr
The Battery Reserve Indicator is automatically displayed
when the watch is turned OFF.
The second belt will advance to a number between 0
and 10 to indicate the remaining battery life at the time
the Tread 1 is powered off. If 9 is indicated, the battery
has 90% power reserve. If the 5 is indicated, the bat-
tery has 50% power reserve, and so on.
If a low battery is detected by the Tread 1, the second
belt indication will automatically be disabled, but the
Tread 1 will continue to track the time on the Hour and
Minute indicator belts. This allows the Tread 1 to continue
operating with dramatically reduced power consumption.
This is an indication that the Tread 1 should be placed in
the charging station.
Once the Tread 1 detects an ample amount of
battery energy from charging, the Tread 1 will then
automatically re-enable the second belt indication.
If the Tread 1 is not placed onto the charger, the
battery will continue to drain. Once the battery level
goes below a usable level the internal circuitry will
disable all belt movement. The Tread 1 must be
placed in the charging station in a short period of
time to retain the set time. Once the battery level is
brought back to a usable level, the Tread 1 can be
turned on again.
A completely depleted battery needs a complete 8
hour charge before returning the watch to service.

Charging
The Tread 1 is charged via an inductively coupled
wireless charging system. Plug the Tread 1 box
into an electrical receptacle using the included DC
power adapter. To enable charging, place the Tread
1 on its specialized cradle in the Tread 1 box. Once
the watch is placed in the cradle, the charging of
the internal battery will start.
* NOTE: The watch must be fully engaged in the
cradle in order to charge.
Charging will automatically stop when the battery is
full. Once the battery is fully charged, the charging
circuitry will continue to trickle charge the battery to
ensure full charge. Because of this technology it is
not possible to overcharge the battery of the Tread 1.
The Tread 1 is equipped with 100-240V charger plug.
In some regions, a plug adapter may be required.
* NOTE: The internal charging cradle within the Tread
1 box can be removed from the box and be used as a
stand-alone charger. First unplug the power adapter
from the back of the box. Then remove the charger
stand by holding the box with one hand and pulling
up on the cradle with the other. Once the stand is
removed, the velvet insert can be removed from the
stand. Plug the power adapter back into the stand
and use the charging stand as needed.

rEpLaCEMEnt
The Tread 1 is equipped with the highest quality
rechargeable battery. With normal use, your battery
should not need to be replaced for many years. If
the battery needs to be replaced; replace only with
a battery supplied by an authorized Devon retailer
or service center.

QUIET MODE
The Tread 1 is equipped with a QUIET MODE function.
This function will reset the second indication belt to
the ‘00’ position and disable it.
While in QUIET MODE the Tread 1 will consume
less energy, and therefore it could also be used to
extend battery life.
To activate QUIET MODE:
TWIST the crown COUNTER CLOCKWISE and
RELEASE.
To deactivate QUIET MODE:
TWIST the crown COUNTER CLOCKWISE and
RELEASE.
* NOTE: Entry into TIME SET MODE or OFF MODE
will return the Tread 1 into NORMAL mode.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
gEnEraL CarE
The Tread 1 is designed and manufactured to function
and retain its beauty and character, however care
should be taken to protect your watch from extenuating
circumstances. Avoid shocks, whether physical, thermal
or other. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures
(greater than 60°C/140°F, less than 0°C/32°F) or acute
temperature changes.
The Tread 1 is manufactured from many different
materials and each material has its own characteristics
and differing effects from contact with chemicals.
While one material may withstand the effects of many
chemicals, others may not have the same resistance.
The lens on the Devon Tread 1 watch is manufactured
from hard-coated polycarbonate. While polycarbonate
is an extremely strong material it is prone to surface
scratches. The polycarbonate lens in the Tread 1
is coated with an abrasion-resistant hard coating.
By adding this coating the surface of our crystal
becomes much harder to resist scratching.
ChEMiCaL rEsistanCE

The hard coating also increases the resistance to
chemical acids. In broad terms there are some
chemicals that very aggressively attack polycarbonate.
These chemicals include toluene, benzene, acetone
and ammonia to name a few. Other chemicals
such as isopropyl alcohol and ethanol have very
little effect on the surface of the polycarbonate. Our
hard coat is designed to protect the polycarbonate
crystal from chemical attack providing a protective
barrier. Our hard coat is specified to protect against
acetone, 1% NaOH, 1% HCl, and Windex. However,
the hard-coat will not protect against all chemicals.
In addition, scratches in the hard-coat will leave the
polycarbonate vulnerable to these chemicals.
Avoid direct contact with solvents, detergents,
perfumes, cosmetics etc., since they may damage
the strap, case, or gaskets.

With the exclusive case design of the Tread 1,
careful cleaning methods must be considered when
caring for your watch. The Tread 1 should never be
submerged in water or any cleaning solution. Steam
cleaning and high-pressure compressed air should
also be avoided when cleaning the Tread 1.
For light cleaning, gently wipe the surfaces of the
Tread 1 with a soft, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth to
remove any loose dirt and dust.
For a heavier cleaning, start by using a jeweler’s
blower to remove loose dust and debris from the
surface of your watch. Lightly loosen caked-on
debris with a soft brush or other small, soft tool.
Blow away the particles with the jeweler’s blower.
Dampen a non-abrasive cloth, and then wring out as
much water as possible. Rub the cloth gently over
the watch face and case.
If a stronger cleaning agent is needed, isopropyl or
rubbing alcohol may be used. For isopropyl alcohol,
use four parts alcohol to one part water. Dampen a
non-abrasive cloth in the solution, and then wring
out as much solution as possible. Rub the cloth
gently over the watch face and case.
For cleaning within the crevices of the Tread 1, dip
a cotton swab in water or the isopropyl alcohol
solution. Rub off as much moisture from the tip
CLEaning

as possible onto a paper towel to prevent it from
puddling onto the watch. Avoid using any abrasive
cleaners on your watch as they cause scratches.
Also avoid the use of soap products as soap leaves
residue.
To clean the wrist-strap, dampen a cloth in clean
water. Rub this over your rubber or leather band
to remove dirt. If the band is rubber, this is all the
cleaning you should do. If your timepiece features a
leather watchband instead of a rubber one, you may
clean it with traditional leather cleaner. Use leather
conditioner on your top-grain (smooth) leather band
occasionally to prevent it from drying. You should do
this once every few months, or when the band feels
dry (necessary frequency will vary). Wipe the leather
band down again with a soft, dry cloth after applying
the conditioner.
Minor scratches are common, especially on watches
that get daily use. The safest way to remove
scratches is always to have the watch serviced by
an authorized Devon retailer or service center.

The Tread 1 Steampunk is a very unique watch
having a large variety of materials not commonly
seen on wristwatches. The exterior bronze and
copper alloys provide the watch with an outstanding
appearance that will continue to change over time.
These alloys develop a protective oxide coating
commonly called a “Patina”. As the watch ages
the patina grows stronger resulting in darker color
tones and a classic, aged look. This patina varies
depending on use and environmental conditions
and each watch will develop its own unique
appearance. The patina process is accelerated
by exposure to the elements and thus storing the
watch in a clean, dry location may also slow this
process.
The bronze alloy used on Steampunk uses aluminum
as the main alloying metal added to copper. Aluminum
bronzes are most valued for their higher strength and
corrosion resistance as compared to other bronze
alloys. These alloys are tarnish-resistant and show
low rates of corrosion in atmospheric conditions.
Aluminum bronzes are most commonly used in
applications where their resistance to corrosion
makes them preferable to other engineering materials,
such as landing gear components on aircraft,
engine components (especially for seagoing ships),
underwater fastenings in naval architecture, and ship
propellers. The attractive gold-toned coloration of
aluminum bronze also made it the perfect choice for
the Tread 1 Steampunk.
stEaMpunk CLEaning

Exposure to various chemicals can also affect the
appearance of the brass alloys. Chemicals like
ammonium sulfide, sulfur, cupric nitrate, ferric nitrate,
and acetic acid (vinegar) to name a few, should be
avoided to assure a consistent, natural patina. Using
the same care methods described above in the
cleaning section will ensure an attractive appearance
and prevent any adverse chemical reactions.
The Tread 1 should be cleaned and serviced every
2-5 years depending on use and wear. You can
send the watch to your authorized Devon retailer or
service center to have this service performed.
Sending your watch to a Devon service center is the
only way to ensure that the replacement parts are
genuine Devon parts. Your Devon watch will also be
returned with papers documenting the authenticity
of the repairs performed by a Devon service center.

If the watch is in Time-Set mode the belts will
be stationary. To exit the mode, press in the
crown and hold it for more than one second.
The watch should begin to keep time.
•Is the watch in Quiet Mode?
If the watch is in Quiet Mode, the second
belt will be held at 00, but the minute and
hour belts will continue to display the time.
To exit quiet mode, turn the crown to the left
(counterclockwise) and hold for more than one
second, the second belt begins to keep time.
•Is the watched turned Off?
If the watch is displaying 12:00 constantly then
it is most likely switched off. Push the crown in
and hold for more than one second, the watch
begins its homing routine.
If none of these items resolve the issue, there may
be trouble with the battery or charging systems.
Consult the Battery and Charging section for more
information.
Unresponsive Crown
•Is the watch otherwise functioning?
If the watch is keeping time but the crown switch
is unresponsive, it is likely that something has
malfunctioned in the crown mechanism. The
watch will need to be returned for service and
repair.
