About the Digi Connect WS
Overview of the Digi Connect WS
Device description
The Digi Connect WS, an electronic data transmitting device, is intended to provide electronic transfer of device data
without controlling or altering the function or parameters of any device to which it is connected. As part of a network
system, the Connect WS is intended to receive and transmit data to/from devices to which it is connected. It does not
incorporate a therapeutic or diagnostic function.
The Connect WS is intended to be used with a data acquisition system to connect to RS-232 serial devices and send
data from these serial devices to the data acquisition system without adjusting or manipulating the format. Connect
WS complies with IEC 60601-1 3rd edition, and can be used in environments requiring this level of testing, including
being placed within the patient environment when used as part of a medical electrical (ME) system.
The Connect WS provides serial over IP connectivity for the environment that connects RS-232 devices to an
information system network. There are three models of the Connect WS: the Connect WS 1, the Connect WS 4, and the
Connect WS 8, which provide one, four, and eight RS-232 serial ports, respectively. The Connect WS includes a 10/100
Mbps network interface card, and an 802.11a/b/g/n compatible Wi-Fi card.
The Connect WS is intended solely to provide an interface between devices with serial ports and network connected
computers running a monitoring application to collect data from those devices.
To transmit data, the serial ports on the Connect WS are connected physically to serial ports on medical devices.
Computers connect through the network to the Ethernet port or Wi-Fi card of the Connect WS and communicate via
serial data communication over TCP or UDP with the Connect WS. The Connect WS, when configured, automatically
transmits serial data to and from connected serial devices with network-connected computers using TCP or UDP
sockets. Without changing or manipulating the data, the Connect WS allows for bi-directional data communication
between serial connected medical devices and network connected computers (through either Ethernet or Wi-Fi).
There is no electrical path for current to earth ground, ensuring no electrical shock when making physical contact
with the Connect WS Terminal Server.
The Connect WS does not provide alarm or safety notification capabilities and is not to be used in the critical path
between any device and any alarm or safety notification system.

Intended use

devices with serial connections to information systems via IP networks. The Connect WS does not control or alter the
functions or parameters of any device to which it is connected. It does not change or manipulate transmitted data or
its display in any way. It does not incorporate a therapeutic or diagnostic function, and is not intended to be used
with active patient monitoring.
The Connect WS is intended for use as an ITE device for data transmission only.
Note Any use of this product beyond the scope of the above description is at the customer’s sole risk and
responsibility.
Connect WS server models
This guide pertains to all Connect WS server models:

Power and cabling requirements
Use an appropriate power cable meeting national standards to connect to a standard outlet. The appropriate
requirements are listed per region:
•EU/International: VDE Mark, conforming to IEC 60083, IEC 60227, or IEC 60320, with C7 to the appropriate national
mains connector, 2 x 0.75 mm2.
•USA/Canada:
UR Mark, conforming to UL 62, UL 817, or CSA-C22.2, with C7 to 1-15P, 5-15P, or NEMA locking connector,
18 AWG.
If Power over Ethernet is used, the device shall use a CAT5 or higher cable that has been inspected and
approved by Facility IT and which provides connectivity on all pins.

Essential performance
The essential performance of the Connect WS is to not compromise the data coming from the attached device
(excluding issues which might cause delayed delivery of data or data not being delivered), and to not compromise the
operation of the connected device.
The expected service life of the Connect WS is 7 years.

Target audience
This guide is intended for those who are responsible for setting up and configuring Digi devices, and who are trained
to operate the equipment connected to the Connect WS to ensure that the product is safe and fully functional.
Installation requirements
Make sure the Connect WS installation is performed by IT personnel with at least one year of experience operating
network equipment within the intended environment.
Any additional required configuration or troubleshooting for the Connect WS is performed remotely with the third
party software and equipment and follows specific procedures provided by the Systems Integrator.
Personnel connecting and configuring devices to the Connect WS should have knowledge of how these devices work
and the proper procedures for configuring their serial ports, as defined in the documentation provided with the
equipment.
The personnel responsible for configuring and verifying proper communication between an attached device and the
data acquisition system that is monitoring this data should have knowledge of the correct configuration methods
and procedures, as defined in the materials provided with the data acquisition system.
The System Integrator is responsible to ensure compliance with any country-specific regulations that pertain when
installing or implementing a solution that uses this product.
CAUTION! Do not modify the Connect WS terminal server or cables, or mount it in any way other than instructed in
this guide. Any modification to the hardware can prevent proper functioning and cause damage to the
connected device.
WARNING! When deploying the Connect WS in an environment subject to IEC 60601-1, refer to the requirements
applicable to medical equipment systems in the standard.

Where necessary, the documentation highlights any applicable warnings, cautions, or notes to help eliminate or
avoid the risk of injury to individuals or damage to equipment. The following lists the levels of information:
CAUTION! Indicates a hazard with a low level of risk, which, if not avoided, could result in minor to moderate
injury or severe damage or malfunctioning of the equipment.
WARNING! Indicates a hazard with a medium to high level of risk which, if not avoided, can result in death or
serious injury.

Important safety information
WARNING! In case of smoke disconnect device and discontinue use. To safely terminate operation of the Connect
WS, disconnect the power cable and the Ethernet cable.
WARNING! To avoid contact with an electrical current:
•Do not touch device if immersed in liquid.
•Do not touch device and discontinue use if enclosure is broken.
•Never install electrical wiring during an electrical storm.
•Never install an Ethernet connection in wet locations unless that connector is specifically designed for wet
locations.
•Use caution when installing or modifying lines.
•Use a screwdriver and other tools with insulated handles.
•Wear safety glasses or goggles.
•Do not place Ethernet wiring or connections in any conduit, outlet or junction box containing electrical wiring.
•As a best practice, mount the device server on a wall or place it on a tabletop away from high traffic areas. Keep
cables out of reach and off the floor.
•Do not place power cable in walkways or anywhere it may receive heavy wear or be crushed, or where it may be a
trip hazard.
•Only use screws included in the packaging.
•Do not connect, remove, or modify protectors or grounding wires; you must have a qualified service provider
perform these tasks.
•Do not touch uninsulated Ethernet wiring if lightning is likely.
•External wiring: Any external communications wiring installed must be constructed to all relevant electrical
codes. In the United States, follow the National Electrical Code, Article 800. Contact a licensed electrician for
details.
WARNING! Verify correct installation and configuration:
•Position the Connect WS so that the power connector and power switch face up. Do not position the Connect WS
within 15 centimeters (6 inches) of the equipment above it. Position the device so that it is easy to remove and re-
insert the power mains cable and the Ethernet cable.
•Do not use a multiple socket-outlet or an extension cord to connect this device.
•Device provides a maximum of 1.5 KV of isolation power protection for Power over Ethernet. Installer must ensure
connected devices provide additional isolation if required.
•The serial ports of the Connect WS shall only be connected to 60601 Class IIa or IIb or 60950 equipment.
•If using the Connect WS in a ME environment, connect only device items that have been specified as part of the ME
system or specified as being compatible with the ME system.
•Do not use near any device that emits electromagnetic waves, such as large motors or electrosurgical equipment,
or the data may be corrupted.
•Reciprocal interference may be caused during specific investigations or treatments. Do not use this equipment
during diagnosis or treatment unless you have verified that no reciprocal interference is caused.
•Do not rely on this equipment as part of an alarm or alert system.
•Disconnect all devices from the device server before using diagnostic mode.
