Setting Up Your DIRECTV Remote
1. LocatetheDIRECTVReceiver'sbrandandmodel
number (on theback or bottompanel)and write itin
thespacesbelow.

OnceyourremoteissetuptoworkwithyourDIRECTV
Receiver,youcansetitupforyourotherequipmentusing
thestepsdetailedonthefollowingpages,oryoucansetit
uponscreenbypressingMENU,thenSELECT onSettings,
SetupintheQuickMenu,thenselectingRemotefromthe
leftmenu.
CONTROLLING YOUR TV
Once you have successfully set up your DIRECTV Remote
tooperateyourDIRECTVReceiver,youcansetitupto
controlyourTV.Werecommendyouuse theon-screen
stepsdescribedonpage 7,butyoucanalsousethe
manualmethodbelow:
1. TurnontheTV.
NOTE: Pleasereadsteps2-5completelybeforeproceed-
ing.Highlightorwritedownthecodesandcom-

step2.
2. Locatethe5-digitcodeforyourTV.(See“Setup
Codes for TVs”onpage14.)
3. SlidetheMODE switchtotheTV position.
4. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysat the same
timeuntilthegreenlightundertheTVposition
flashestwice,thenreleasebothkeys.
5. Usingthenumberkeysenterthe5-digitcodeforyour
brandofTV.Ifperformedcorrectly,thegreenlight
underTV flashedtwice.
6. AimtheremoteatyourTVandpressthePWR key
once. YourTV should turnoff.Ifitdoes not turnoff,
repeatsteps3and4,tryingeachcodeforyourbrand
untilyoufindthecorrectcode.
7. SlidetheMODE switchtotheDIRECTV position.Press
TV POWER.YourTV should turnon.
8. Forfuturereference,writedowntheworkingcodefor
yourTVintheblocksbelow:
SETTING UP THE TV INPUT KEY
OnceyouhavesetuptheDIRECTVRemotecontrolforyour
TV,youcanactivatetheTV INPUT keysoyoucanchangethe
“source”—thepieceofequipmentwhosesignalis
displayedonyourTV:
1. SlidetheMODE switch totheTV position.
2. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysuntil the
greenlightundertheTVpositionflashestwice,then
release both keys.
3. Usingthenumberkeysenter9-6-0. (Thegreenlight
undertheTV positionflashestwice.)
YounowcanchangetheinputforyourTV.
Deactivate the TV Input Select Key
IfyouwanttodeactivatetheTV INPUT key, repeat steps 1
through3fromtheprevioussection;thegreenlightwill
blink4times.PressingtheTV INPUT key will now do
nothing.
CONTROLLING OTHER COMPONENTS
TheAV1 andAV2 switch positionscanbe setuptocontrola
VCR,DVD,STEREO,secondDIRECTVReceiverorsecond
TV.Werecommendyouusetheonscreensteps
described onpage 7,butyoucanalsousethemanual
methodbelow:
1. Turnonthecomponentyouwishtocontrol(e.g.your
DVD Player).

2. Locatethe5-digitcodeforyourcomponent.(See
“SetupCodes,OtherDevices”startingonpage14.)
3. SlidetheMODE switchtotheAV1 (orAV2)position.
4. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysat the same
timeuntilthegreenlightunderAV1 (orAV2)flashes
twice,thenreleasebothkeys.
5. UsingtheNUMBER keys,enterthe5-digitcodeforthe
brandofcomponentbeingset up.Ifperformed
correctly,thegreenlightundertheselectedposition
flashestwice.
6. AimtheremoteatyourcomponentandpressthePWR
keyonce.The componentshouldturnoff; if it does
not,repeatsteps3and4,tryingeachcodeforyour
branduntilyoufindthecorrectcode.
7. Repeatsteps1through6tosetupanewcomponent
underAV2 (orAV1).
8. Forfuturereferencewritedowntheworkingcodefor
thecomponent(s)setupunderAV1 andAV2 below:

SEARCHING FOR TV, AV1 OR AV2 CODES
IfyouwereunabletofindthecodeforyourbrandofTVor
component,youcantryacodesearch.Thisprocessmay
takeupto30minutes.
1. TurnontheTVorcomponent.Insertatapeordiskif
applicable.
2. SlidetheMODE switchtotheTV,AV1 orAV2 position,
asdesired.
3. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysat the same
timeuntilthegreenlightundertheselectedswitch
positionflashestwice,thenreleasebothkeys.
4. Enter9-9-1 followedbyoneofthefollowingfour-
digits:

5. PressPWR,orotherfunctions(e.g.PLAY forVCR)you
want to use.
6. PointtheremoteattheTVorcomponentandpress
CHAN+.RepeatedlypressCHAN+ untiltheTVor
componentturnsoff.
NOTE: Every time CHAN+ ispressedtheremote
advancestothenextcodeandpoweristrans-
mittedtothecomponent.
7. UsetheCHAN- keytostepbackacode.
8. WhentheTVorcomponentturnsoff,stoppressing
theCHAN+ key.Then,pressandreleasetheSELECT
key.
NOTE: Ifthelightflashes3timesbeforetheTVorcom-
ponentresponds,you'vecycledthroughall
codesandthecodeyouneedisnotavailable.You
mustusetheremotethatcamewithyourTVor
component.
Verifying the Codes
OnceyouhavesetuptheDIRECTVUniversalRemote
Controlusingtheabovesteps,usethefollowing
instructionstofindoutthe5-digitcodetowhichyour
componentresponded:
1. SlidetheMODE switchtotheappropriateposition.
2. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysat the same
timeuntilthegreenlightundertheselectedswitch
positionflashestwice,thenreleasebothkeys.
3. Enter9-9-0.(Thegreenlightundertheselected
switchpositionflashestwice.)
4. Toviewthefirstdigitinthecode,Pressandrelease
thennumber1key.Waitthreeseconds,andcountthe
numberoftimesthegreenlightflashes.Writethis
number downinthe leftmost TV,AV1orAV2 code
boxfoundonpage9.
5. Repeatstep4fourmoretimesfortheremaining
digits;i.e.,pressnumber2fortheseconddigit,3for
thethirddigit,4forthefourthdigitand5forthefinal
digit.
CHANGING VOLUME LOCK
Dependingonhowyousetupyourremote,theVOL and
MUTE maycontrol the volumeonly onyourTV,regardless
ofthepositionofthe MODE switch.Thisremotecanbeset
upsothattheVOL andMUTE keys work onlywiththe
COMPONENTTYPE COMPONENTID#

VCR/DVD/PVR 2

componentselectedbytheMODE switch.Toenablethis
feature,perform the followingsteps:
1. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysuntil the
greenlightundertheDIRECTV positionflashestwice,
thenreleasebothkeys.
2. Usingthenumberkeys,enter9-9-3.(Thegreenlight
willflashtwiceafterthe3.)
3. PressandreleasetheVOL+key.(Thegreenlight
flashes4times.)
Now the VOL andMUTE keys will work onlyforthe
componentselectedbytheMODE switchposition.
To Lock Volume to AV1, AV2 or TV
1. SlidetheMODE switchtotheAV1,AV2 orTV positionto
lockthevolume.
2. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysuntil the
greenlightundertheselectedswitchflashestwiceand
release both keys.
3. Usingthenumberkeys,enter9-9-3.(Thegreenlight
flashestwice.)
4. PressandreleasetheSELECT key.(Thegreenlight
flashestwice.)
NOTE: DIRECTVboxesdon’thavevolume control, so
theremotewillnotallowtheusertolockvolume
totheDIRECTVmode.
RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS
Toresetallthefunctionsoftheremotecontroltothe
factorydefaults(theoriginal,out-of-the-boxsettings),
followthesesteps:
1. PressandholdtheMUTE andSELECT keysat the same
timeuntilthegreenlightflashestwice,thenrelease
bothkeys.
2. Usingthenumberkeys,enter9-8-1.(Thegreenlight
flashes4times.)
TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: Lightatthetopoftheremoteblinkswhenyou
pressakey,butthecomponentdoesnotrespond.
SOLUTION 1: Tryreplacingthebatteries(seepage6).
SOLUTION 2: MakesureyouareaimingtheDIRECTV®
UniversalRemoteControlatyourhomeentertainment
componentandthatyouarewithin15feetofthe
componentyouaretrying tocontrol.
PROBLEM: TheDIRECTVUniversalRemoteControldoes
notcontrolcomponentorcommandsarenotrecognized
properly.
SOLUTION: Tryalllistedcodesforthedevicebrandbeing
setup.Makesureallcomponentscanbeoperatedwithan
infrared remote control.
PROBLEM: TV/VCRcombodoesnotrespondproperly.

SOLUTION: UsetheVCRcodesforyourbrand.Somecombo
unitsmayrequirebothaTVcodeandaVCRcodeforfull
operation(seepage7).
PROBLEM: CHAN+,CHAN-,and PREV donotworkforyour
RCA TV.
SOLUTION: DuetoRCAdesignforcertainmodels(1983-
1987),onlytheoriginalremotecontrolwilloperatethese
functions.
PROBLEM: Changingchannelsdoesnotworkproperly.
SOLUTION: Iforiginalremotecontrolrequiredpressing
ENTER tochangechannels,pressENTER ontheDIRECTV
Universalremotecontrolafterenteringachannelnumber.
PROBLEM: RemotecontroldoesnotturnonSonyorSharp
TV/VCRCombo.
SOLUTION: Forpoweron,theseproductsrequiresettingup
TV codes ontheremote control.ForSony, use TVcode
0000andVCRcode0032.ForSharp,useTVcode0093and
