Stat m nt of Purpos
All Pipet-Aid models are designed to transfer liquids with the use of serologi al,
volumetri and/or blow-out pipets in either glass, plasti or something similar.
Rul s for Saf Op ration
• For indoor use only.
• Do not attempt to use the harger/power supply with any other produ t.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHARGE THIS UNIT WITH ANY OTHER CHARGERS.
• This produ t in ludes re hargeable Ni-MH batteries. Do not in inerate batteries as
they may explode at high temperatures.
• Never operate unit in an explosive atmosphere.
• Expelling liquid from a pipet generates aerosols. The faster the liquid is expelled,
the more aerosols are generated. Understand the nature of the liquid being
pipetted and take appropriate pre autions.
• Do not operate unit with a damaged ord.
• Use harger only in a standard ele tri al outlet.
• Do not handle power supply with wet hands.
• Do not put unit or harger in water or other liquid.
• Pipetting a ids or strong alkalis will damage unit.
• When servi ing, use only identi al Drummond repla ement parts.
• Save these instru tions.
If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer,
the protection provided by the equipment may be impaired. Always use
the charger or power supply that is supplied with the unit.
Conn ctions to Pow r Supply:
Che k the power supply to see that the line voltage orresponds to the voltage
indi ated on the mains adapter.
If the mains adapter supply and the line voltage are not ompatible, the ele tri al
omponents of the Pipet-Aid may be damaged or destroyed.
Before ea h use, onfirm that the mains adapter able is not damaged, worn or
severely bu kled and there are no breaks in the insulating surfa e. If any damage is
noted, do not use the Pipet-Aid until the damaged mains is repla ed.

Pip tting Instructions
Insert a pipet into the nosepie e by twisting the pipet while pushing. Exer ise
extreme aution when using glass pipets as breakage is an ever present danger.
Depressing the top button fills the pipet, depressing the bottom button empties it.
The flow rate is proportional to the amount the button is depressed.
Sp d Controls
Ea h button has three speeds: “F” fast, “M” medium, and “S” slow. The speed is
sele ted by rotating the button on its axis until a detent is felt; the speed hosen is
visible when the handle is held in the right hand. The “M” orresponds to the speed
of previous Pipet-Aids. Fast is to be used for rapid filling of large pipets or breaking
up ell lumps. Slow speed should be used for small pipets or where pre ise
delivery is required. Please note that ea h button an be set independently. For
example, one ould fill a large pipet on “F” and deliver small amounts on “S”.
CAUTION: SPEED CONTROL BUTTONS MUST BE POSITIONED ON “F”, “M”,
OR “S”. INTERMEDIATE SETTING WILL CAUSE LEAKAGE. ALSO, DO NOT
CHANGE SPEED CONTROL BUTTONS WITH FLUID IN THE PIPET. THIS WILL
ALSO CAUSE THE UNIT TO LEAK.
Filt r
The XL in orporates a new EZ Grip, tissue ulture nosepie e (2), whi h features a
unique filter element. The self-lo king TC filter (4-000-051) will ease to pass air in
either dire tion when it be omes wet, alerting the user to possible ontamination of
the rubber insert.
NOTE: IF THE PUMP PULSES WHEN THE FILL BUTTON IS DEPRESSED, THE FILTER
HAS BEEN COMPROMISED AND MUST BE REPLACED. REPLACE WITH FILTER
NUMBER 4-000-051. St ril filt rs ar availabl (4-000-051-S).
To remove the filter (4), push in the nosepie e release (7), turn the EZ Grip nosepie e
(2) 1/4 turn ounter lo kwise and pull down. Repla e the filter, making sure both
TC gaskets (5) are pla ed on the new filter and making sure the rubber insert (3)
(4-000-002) is lean and dry and does not ontain any otton plugs.
F atur s
The Pipet-Aid®XL in orporates several new features. The new lightweight ergonomi
handle is designed to redu e ne k, shoulder, and arm fatigue when pipetting under
a hood. A new powerful pump improves fluid movement and redu es noise level.
Individual speed ontrols are provided for both aspirate and dispense modes. A
green LED indi ates battery is harging and the unit an be harged while in use.
The new EZ Grip nosepie e makes filter repla ement easy and the new nosepie e
lo k will prevent a idental removal. An adjustable sliding hand rest is provided along
with a removable stand and a wall mount holster.

Batt ry
The XL is powered by a 3.6V, ni kel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), re hargeable battery (14)
( atalog number: 4-000-036). It is not the same battery used in our other
Portable Pipet-Aids®.
Battery repla ement is a user fun tion. Although the batteries are re hargeable,
they have a limited life span of generally 2-3 years or 1000 y les. To repla e the
battery, remove the nosepie e, remove the hand rest by prying off, uns rew the
4 Phillips s rews, lay the unit down on the ben h with the s rew holes up, open up
the unit arefully, unplug the old battery, and repla e with a new battery. Batteries
are available from your lo al lab equipment supplier or dire t from Drummond
S ientifi Company.*
Charging th Batt ry
IMPORTANT: BATTERY SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR A MINIMUM
OF SIX HOURS BEFORE INITIAL USE.
When not in use, plug in the harger/power supply and let harge overnight.
The GREEN LED will light up when harging.
The green LED will remain on as long as the harger is plugged into the unit.
An internal ir uit will prevent over harging.
NOTE: DO NOT USE ANY CHARGER OTHER THAN THE ONE SUPPLIED (4-000-065).
THIS UNIT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER DRUMMOND CHARGERS.
ALTHOUGH MANY OTHER CHARGERS WILL FIT INTO THE UNIT, CHARGING WILL NOT
OCCUR OR DAMAGE TO THE BATTERY WILL RESULT.
While using the unit and the battery harge be omes insuffi ient to operate the unit,
plug in the harger and ontinue using the unit. Charging will take pla e while in use.
The harger also fun tions as a power supply.
All re hargeable batteries have a limited life span. Generally ea h battery will last
approximately 1000 y les ( harges) and then must be repla ed. Repla ement is a
user fun tion and will require a Phillips head s rewdriver, a new battery (4-000-036),
and about two minutes of your time. (See above)
*Use only re ommended battery for repla ement (DSC #4-000-036). Do not repla e the battery with a
non-re hargeable battery. Explosion or fire hazard an o ur if in orre t battery repla ement is used.
Instructions for Cl aning
Wiping the unit with a soft loth or wipe with isopropyl al ohol is suffi ient to lean the
unit. Avoid the use of a etone and other organi solvents whi h will damage the handle.
All omponents inside the nosepie e may be auto laved with the ex eption of the
Drummond Self-lo king Filter. Repla e the filter when ompromised.
Always dis onne t the harger/power supply from the unit when leaning.

Keep your Pipet-Aid lean and harged at all times. When not in use, it is appropriate
to keep the unit plugged into the harger. No damage will o ur if you are using the
harger supplied.

These filters must be repla ed if over-pipetting o urs. They prote t the handle
omponents as well as minimize ross ontamination of samples and ontain two
membrane layers.
On some models, (XP2and XL) if the battery harge be omes insuffi ient to operate
the unit, plug in the harger and ontinue using the unit. Charging will take pla e while
in use. The harger supplied with these two units fun tion as a power supply.
