To Take full advantage of the DS18 NXL-N amps
you have just purchased, please read and follow the
instructions in this manual. As with all of our
products, professional installation by an authorized
DS18 NXL-N amps dealer is highly recommended!
The DS18 NXL-N waterproof amplifiers offer high
quality audio reproduction for the audiophile and
the everyday listener alike. All models feature fully
variable crossovers with 12 dB per octave slopes,
allowing you the ability to tailor the sound to best
fit the speakers and your listening preferences.
Protruding Sealed Wiring
Ensures solid electrical connections that resist
corrosion.
Fully Variable Crossovers
Makes installation easy and saves the cost of
external crossovers. Additionally, they can be used
in conjunction with external passive or active
crossovers, depending on the complexity required
by the system. The 12dB per octave slope offers a
steep roll-off above or below.
Protection Circuitry
Against Overload, Short Circuit, Thermal, and
Reverse Polarity. These protection features are
designed to protect the amplifier from misuse, as
well as from common causes of amplifier failure.

Para aprovechar al máximo los amplificadores DS18
NXL-N que acaba de comprar, lea y siga las
instrucciones de este manual. Al igual que con todos
nuestros productos, se recomienda encarecidamente
la instalación profesional por parte de un distribuidor
autorizado de amplificadores DS18 NXL-N.
Los amplificadores a prueba de agua DS18 NXL-N
ofrecen reproducción de audio de alta calidad tanto
para el audiófilo como para el oyente cotidiano. Todos
los modelos cuentan con cruces totalmente variables
con pendientes de 12 dB por octava, lo que le permite
adaptar el sonido para que se ajuste mejor a los
altavoces y a sus preferencias de escucha.

Crossovers totalmente variables

INPUT SECTION
Because of the wide range of head unit output
configurations all DS18 NXL-N amps have an
adjustable input sensitivity of “Gain”. The gain is
not a volume or a power limiting control like a
throttle. It makes the amp more sensitive to input
from the stereo; with the gain up, the amp will
reach full output at a lower volume setting on the
deck. At higher gain settings the amp also becomes
more and more sensitive to noise from the
vehicles’s electrical system. Try to run the gain at
the lowest setting possible for your system.
There is no correct gain setting, because speakers
require different power demands to reach the same
output, the gains most often need to be used to
compensate for these differences. If you tried to set
all the gains at half way you would probably find the
system didn’t sound very good. Using good
judgment and listening carefully to each speaker is
still the best way to tune a system.
SECCIÓN DE ENTRADA
Debido a la amplia gama de configuraciones de salida
de la unidad principal, todos los amplificadores DS18
NXL-N tienen una sensibilidad de entrada ajustable de
"Ganancia". La ganancia no es un control de limitación
de volumen o potencia como un acelerador. Hace que
el amplificador sea más sensible a la entrada del

CROSSOVER CONTROLS
A crossover is a device that removes unwanted
frequencies from a speaker or amplifier. A tweeter
can easily be destroyed by bass notes if they are not
filtered out. Likewise a subwoofer will not sound
natural if it is playing midrange notes. A crossover
removes these sounds from the speaker. As you
might guess, careful adjustment in need to ensure
that all the speakers are playing the right sounds
and that you are left with no “holes” or low spots in
the frequency response.
BASS BOOST
DS18 NXL-N amplifiers have an adjustable bass
boost. Begin your adjustments at low volume. If you
do not hear any improvement then woofer does not
need any bass boost.
The Low Pass Filter (LPF) must be switched on for
the bass boost to activate.
Use Bass Boost carefully. The demands on power
output are tremendous. Try to minimize the use by
changing woofer position or the enclosure size.
CONTROLES CROSSOVER
Un crossover es un dispositivo que elimina las
frecuencias no deseadas de un altavoz o amplificador.
Un tweeter puede ser destruido fácilmente por notas
graves si no se filtran. Del mismo modo, un
subwoofer no sonará natural si está reproduciendo
notas de rango medio. Un cruce elimina estos sonidos
del altavoz. Como puede suponer, se necesita un
ajuste cuidadoso para garantizar que todos los
altavoces reproduzcan los sonidos correctos y que no
tenga "agujeros" o puntos bajos en la respuesta de
frecuencia.
REFUERZO DE GRAVES

SPEAKER OUTPUTS
This amplifier is a multi channel amplifier design,
meaning it has more than one channel of speaker
outputs. It is equipped with a large block style
terminal for speaker connection. Make this
connection carefully and neatly. Strip your wire
back and twist the exposed leads and insert them
into the block terminal while being careful that
there is no loose or frayed strands of wire and
tighten the Allen head screw down on the terminal
till the wire is tightly secured in place. If the wires
ever come in contact with each other the amplifier
will go into protection.

WE LIKE IT LOUD
READ BEFORE INSTALLATION
1. Be sure to carefully read and understand the
instructions before attempting to install these speakers.
2. For safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal
from the battery prior to beginning the installation.
3. For easier assembly, we suggest you run all wires prior
to mounting speakers in place, also have all your tools
athand: drill, set of Allen keys, crimpers, soldering iron,
wire strippers, heat shrink tubing, etc.
LEER ANTES DE INSTALAR
1. Asegúrese de leer detenidamente y comprender
las instrucciones antes de intentar instalar estos
altavoces.
2. Por seguridad, desconecte el terminal negativo de
la batería antes de comenzar la instalación.
3. Para facilitar el montaje, le sugerimos que pase

lugar, también tenga a mano todas sus

4. Use high quality connectors for a reliable installation
and to minimize signal or power loss.
5. Think before you drill! Be careful not to cut or drill into
gas tanks, fuel lines, brake or hydraulic lines, vacuum lines
or electrical wiring when working on any vehicle. If
installation in a boat, take care not to cut or drill through
the main hull.
6. Never place cables near fuel lines or power (if possible),
also never run wires underneath the vehicle, running the
wires inside the vehicle or hull area provides the best
protection.
7. Avoid running wires over or through sharp edges, use
rubber or plastic grommets to protect any wires routed
through metal, especially the firewall.
AMPLIFIER INSTALLATION
Professional installation by an authorized DS18 NXL-N
amps dealer is highly recommended! Otherwise, the
performance of your new gear may not be satisfactory. In
the event that you decide to do your own installation,
please read and follow this manual very carefully. Failure
to do so may compromise the integrity of this product,
your vehicle, and possibly void the product warranty.
Amplifiers are generally mounted in closed compartments
of the vehicle or watercrafts. Select a location that will
provide adequate ventilation for the amplifier. Avoid
mounting the amplifier in exposed areas.
Secure the amplifier with the screws provided. Before
securing the amplifier, inspect the mounting location
carefully to ensure that you do not drill into or damage any
electrical, hydraulic, fluid, or fuel lines.
1. Before you start, disconnect the negative cable from
the car battery. Tape up the end so it is isolated from the
battery.
2. Run an appropriate gauge wire from the battery to the
amplifier. Plan this part of the installation carefully. This
cable will carry very high current, if it should short to the
body and it is not properly fused it could catch fire.
3. Connect the power wire to the battery using a fuse
capable of the total current load of all amplifiers
connected. Don’t install the fuse yet. Wait until the end.
Locate the fuse as close as possible to the battery. If the
fuse is further than 18 inches (wire length) from the
battery you should reevaluate the wire and fuse
placement.

7. Evite pasar cables sobre o a través de bordes
afilados, use ojales de goma o plástico para proteger
cualquier cable que pase a través de metal,
especialmente en el cortafuegos.
INSTALACIÓN DE AMPLIFICADOR
Los amplificadores generalmente se montan en
compartimentos cerrados del vehículo o
embarcaciones. Seleccione una ubicación que
proporcione una ventilación adecuada para el
amplificador. Evite montar el amplificador en áreas
expuestas.
Asegure el amplificador con los tornillos
proporcionados. Antes de asegurar el amplificador,
inspeccione cuidadosamente la ubicación de montaje
para asegurarse de no perforar ni dañar ninguna
línea eléctrica, hidráulica, de fluido o de combustible.
1. Antes de comenzar, desconecte el cable negativo
de la batería, pegue el extremo con cinta adhesiva
para que quede aislado de la batería.
2. Tienda un cable de calibre adecuado desde la
batería hasta el amplificador. Planifique esta parte de
la instalación con cuidado. este cable transportará
una corriente muy alta. Si tiene un cortocircuito en
algun lugar y no está correctamente protejido con
fusible, podría incendiarse.
3. Conecte el cable de alimentación a la batería
utilizando un fusible capaz de soportar la carga de
corriente total de todos los amplificadores
conectados. No instale el fusible todavía. Espera
hasta el final. Ubique el fusible lo más cerca posible
de la batería. Si el fusible está a más de 18 pulgadas
(longitud del cable) de la batería, debe volver a
evaluar la ubicación del cable y el fusible.

4. Find the closest clear metal area to the amp for
a ground. sand, grind or scrape all paint and
undercoating from the body and screw the
ground securely in place. In some vehicles or
boats the ground wire must go directly to the
battery, use a proper size and color wire to
identify as a ground wire and avoid mixing it with
the positive wire. It is advisable to test the
ground with an ohmmeter between the ground
cable and the negative battery cable to ensure a
good low resistance connection. Some alloys
used in modern vehicles do not offer the best
ground. If you believe this is the case – first
consult with the vehicle manufacturer.
5. Run the speaker wire to the speakers. It is
advised that you leave some extra wire at this
point. You can fix it later. This amplifier is a
multi-channel amplifier design, meaning it has
more than one channel of speaker outputs. It is
equipped with a harness over-mold. Connect this
carefully and neatly; strip your wire back and
twist the exposed leads and use an insulated
waterproof marine butt connector. If the wires
ever contact each other the amplifier will go into
protection mode.
6. If you haven’t done so already, mount the amplifier
now. Only after this step - you should connect
back the negative cable at the battery.
7. Connect the remote wire and the RCA audio
signal from the Head Unit to the amplifier.
8. Connect the speaker wires to the amplifier and
speakers (make sure the amp is off first). Make
sure the polarity (+) and (-) is correct.
9. Now you can tune the amp. Take your time and
make only one adjustment at a time. It may take
some time to get the system fully adjusted. During
this time the amp is drawing current from the
battery. You should check the battery voltage from
time to time and recharge it, if it gets low. That’s it.
You’re done. Now have fun.

Before removing your amplifier refer to the list
below and follow the suggested procedures.
Always test the speakers and their wires first
AMPLIFIER WON’T POWER UP
• Check for good ground connection.
• Check that remote DC terminal has at least
10V DC.
• Check that there is battery power on the+
terminal.
• Check all FUSES.
• Check that Protection LED is not lit. IF it is lit,
shut off amplifier briefly and then re-power it.
HIGH HISS OR ENGINE NOISE (ALTERNATOR
WHINE) IN SPEAKERS.
Disconnect all RCA inputs to the amplifier, if hiss
noise disappears, then plug in the component
driving the amplifier and unplug lts inputs. If hiss
noise disappears, go on until the faulty/noisy
component is found. Itis best to set the amplifier
input level as insensitive as possible. “The best
subjective S/N ratio is obtainable this way. Try to
drive as high a signal level from the head unit as
possible.
PROTECTION LED COMES ON WHEN THE
AMPLIFIER IS POWERED UP.
Check for shorts on speaker leads. Check that
volume control on the head unit is turned down
low. Remove speaker leads, and reset the
amplifier f the Protection LED still comes on,
then the amplifier is faulty. The amplifier will
shut down automatically when the units:
temperature goes up to 85*C This will protect
the units from damage.
AMPLIFIER GETS VERY HOT.
Check that the minimum speaker impedance for
that model is correct. Check for speaker shorts.
Check that there is good airflow around the
amplifier. In some applications, an external
cooling fan may be required.

DISTORTED SOUND
Check that the Level controls is set to match the
signal. level of the head unit. Check that all
crossover frequencies have been properly set.
Check for shorts on the speaker leads.
HIGH SQUEAL NOISE FROM SPEAKERS.
This is always caused by a poorly grounded RCA
wire.
