Themicro-computer analyses allechoes and eliminates surface clutter,

are undesirable. Inmostinstances,
remainingtargets
arefish. TheFish l.D.featuredisplayssymbols onthe
screenin
place
oftheactualfishechoes.Therearefourfish
symbol
sizes:
tiny,small, medium, and large. These areused todesignatetherelative
sizebetween targets. Inother
words,itdisplaysasmallfishsymbol
when
itthinksa
target

GRAYLINP
GRAYLINE lets you distinguish between strongand weak echoes. It
"paints" gray
on
targets
thatarestronger than apreset value. Thisallows
you
totellthedifference between ahard andsoftbottom. For
example,a
soft,muddyor
weedyboftomreturnsaweaker signalwhichisshownwith
a narrowor nogray line.Ahardbottom returns astrongsignalwhich
causesawidegray line.
Ifyouhavetwosignalsofequalsize, onewithgrayandtheotherwithout,
thenthetargetwith gray is the stronger signal. This helpsdistinguish
weeds fromtreesonthe
bottom, orfishfromstructure.
GRAYLINE is
adjustable.
SinceGRAYLINEshowsthedifferencebetween
strong
and weak
signals,adjustingthe
sensitivity mayrequireadifferent

ADJUSTCHARTSURFACE CLARITY
Themarkings extending downward fromthezeroline onthechart are
called"surfaceclutter."These
markingsarecaused by
wave
action, boat
wakes, temperature inversion, and othernaturalcauses.
TheSurface
ClarityControl (SCC) reducesoreliminates
surface clutter
signalsfrom the display. SCC varies the sensitivity of the receiver,
decreasing itnearthesurface and gradually increasing itas thedepth
increases.ThemaximumdepththatSCCwillaffectis75%
oftheselected
depth range. Forexample, on a0-60foot range with maximum SCC,

ASP(AdvancedSignal Processing)
The ASPfeature is a noise
rejection
constantly
evaluates theeffectsof
interference. Thisautomatic feature
undermostconditions.
TheASPfeature isaneffective toolin
combating noise. Insonar terms,
noiseisany undesired signal. Itiscaused
byelectrical and mechanical
sourcessuchas bilgepumps, engine ignition systems andwiring, air
bubbles
passing overthe
faceofthe
transducer,evenvibration fromthe
engine. Inallcases, noisecanproduce unwantedmarks onthe
display.
TheASPfeaturehastwolevels-NormalandHigh. If
youhavehigh noise
levels,
tryusing
the
"High"
ASP
setting.However,if you
arehaving
trouble
withnoise, wesuggest that
you
takestepstofindthe
interference source
andfixit, ratherthan continually using
theunitwiththe
highASP
setting.
However,
therearetimeswhen
youmay
wanttoturntheASP
feature off.
Thisallows
you
toviewallincoming echoesbeforethey
areprocessedby
theASPfeature.
Tochange theASPlevel,press
theMENUkey fivetimes.Then pressthe
keynexttothe"ADJUST LEVELOFCHARTASP"labeluntilthedesired

Yourunithastheuniqueabilitytoview
targets
not
onlystraight down, but
also out to the left or right of the boat. This requires the optional
"BroadViewTM"transducer. Thistransducerhasthreeelementsthatview
tothe
right,left,anddown.Thetransducerattachestoyourboat's transom
or it canmounton atrollingmotorusing hardware supplied with the
transducer. TheBroadViewTM transducer cable
attaches directlytoyour
sonar unit's transducer connector. See the BroadView's installation
instructions includedwiththeBroadViewtransducerformore detail.
Whenyour sonarunitisfirsturnedonwith aBroadViewTM
transducer,the
downtransducer element isin use. Toseeechoesfromeither theleftor

To adjustthe zoom, press the keyadjacent to the "ADJUST" label. A
screen similartotheone belowappears. Azoom barand adjust
arrows

top

SIGNALINTERPRETATION
Your UltraIll givesan accurate picture ofthe bottom that your boat is
passing. Abottomoffirm sand, gravel, shell, orhardclayreturnsa
fairly
wide
signal.Iftheautomaticmode isoffandthe
signal narrowsdown,
then
itmeansthat
you
havemovedoveramudbottom.Mudabsorbsthesound
waveandreturns aweaksignal.Turnupthe sensitivity tosee a better
bottom
signal.
igrocksorstumps on asmooth bottom sendbacksignals above the
bottom
level
signal.The heightofthesignaldependsonthetarget's
height.
As
youpass
overa
post,itshouldbe clearlyvisible
asashortline
extending
abovethe
bottom signal.
Asteepslope
returnsawide
signal,
the
steeperthe wider.Signals returned
fromahigh
underwater cliffare usuallythe
widestofall.
WhentheFishl.D.modeis off,thedepthofthewaterwill affectthe
size
and
shape
ofthefish arch duetothecone angle
diameter. Forexample,
ifthecone
passes
overafishinshallow
water,the signal displayedonthe
UltraIllmaynotarchatall.Thisisduetothe narrowconediameterandthe
resolution limitationsofthedisplay.
