Themicro-computer analyses allechoes and eliminates surface clutter,
thermoclines, andother

are undesirable. Inmostinstances,
remainingtargets
arefish. TheFish l.D.featuredisplayssymbols onthe
screenin
place
oftheactualfishechoes.Therearefourfish
symbol
sizes:
tiny,small, medium, and large. These areused todesignatetherelative
sizebetween targets. Inother
words,itdisplaysasmallfishsymbol
when
itthinksa
target

GRAYLINP
GRAYLINE lets you distinguish between strongand weak echoes. It
"paints" gray
on
targets
thatarestronger than apreset value. Thisallows
you
totellthedifference between ahard andsoftbottom. For
example,a
soft,muddyor
weedyboftomreturnsaweaker signalwhichisshownwith
a narrowor nogray line.Ahardbottom returns astrongsignalwhich
causesawidegray line.
Ifyouhavetwosignalsofequalsize, onewithgrayandtheotherwithout,
thenthetargetwith gray is the stronger signal. This helpsdistinguish
weeds fromtreesonthe
bottom, orfishfromstructure.
GRAYLINE is
adjustable.
SinceGRAYLINEshowsthedifferencebetween
strong
and weak
signals,adjustingthe
sensitivity mayrequireadifferent

The ASPfeature is a noise
rejection
constantly
evaluates theeffectsof
interference. Thisautomatic feature
undermostconditions.
TheASPfeature isaneffective toolin
combating noise. Insonar terms,
noiseisany undesired signal. Itiscaused
byelectrical and mechanical
sourcessuchas bilgepumps, engine ignition systems andwiring, air
bubbles
passing overthe
faceofthe
transducer,evenvibration fromthe
engine. Inallcases, noisecanproduce unwantedmarks onthe

TheASPfeaturehastwolevels-NormalandHigh. If

Watertemperature
hasanimportant-if not
controlling-influenceupon
the
activitiesofallfish. Fisharecoldbloodedandtheirbodiesarealways
the
temperature ofthesurrounding water. During thewinter,
colderwater
slows downtheirmetabolism.Atthistime, theyneed aboutafourthas
much food astheyconsume inthesummer.
Mostfish
don't
spawnunlessthe watertemperature iswithinrathernarrow
limits. A surface temperature meter helps identify the desired surface
waterspawning temperatures forvariousspecies. Troutcan'tsurvivein
streamsthatgettoowarm. Bassandotherfish eventually
dieoutwhen
stocked
in lakesthatremaintoocoldduringthesummer. While somefish
havea
widertemperature
tolerancethan
others,each
hasacertainrange
withinwhichit
triestostay.Schoolingfish suspendedover
deep
waterlie
atthe
levelthat
provides thistemperature.Weassume they
arethe
most
comfortable here.

resistor sparkplugs
orroutingthesonarunit's
powerandtransducer cables away
fromother
electricalwiringontheboat.
Nofisharcheswhen theFishIDfeatureisoff:
1. Make certain transducerispointing straight down.This isthe most
common
problem ifa
partialarch isdisplayed. SeetheFishArchsection
in
your
owner's
manual formore information.
2.The
sensitivity may
notbehigh enough.Inorderfortheunittodisplay
afisharch,it
hastobeabletoreceivethefish's echofromthetimeitenters
theconeuntilitleaves.Ifthe
sensitivityisnot
highenough,the
unitdisplays
thefishonlywhenitisin thecenterofthecone.
3. Use theZoomfeature. Itismuch easiertodisplay
fish archeswhen
zoomed inonasmall rangeofwaterthanalargeone. For example, you
willhave
much
betterluckseeing
fisharcheswitha30to6ofoot
rangethan
aUto60foot
range.
This
enlargesthetargets, allowingthe
displayto
show
much more detail.
4.Theboatmust bemoving ataslow
trollingspeedtoseefish arches.
Iftheboatis
motionless, fishstay in thecone, showing onthe
display
asstraight horizontal lines.

NOISE KEYBOARD
Amajor causeofsonar problemsiselectrical noise.This
usuallyappears
onthe
sonar's
displayasrandompatternsofdotsorlines. Inseverecases,
it cancompletely
coverthe screen with black dots, orcause the unit
operate erraticly, ornotatall.
Toeliminate
orminimizetheeffectsofelectricalnoise,firsttryto
determine
thecause.Withtheboatatrestinthe
water, thefirst
thingyou
should do
isturnallelectrical equipmentontheboatoff.Makecertainthe
engine is
off, also. Turn your UltraIll on, then turn offASP (Advanced Signal
Processing). Thereshould beasteady
bottom
signal onthe
display.Now
turnoneach
piece
ofelectricalequipment ontheboatandview
theeffect
onthesonar'sdisplay. For
example,turnonthebilgepumpandviewthe
sonardisplay fornoise. Ifnonoiseispresent,turnthe
pumpoff,
thenturn
ontheVHFradioandtransmit.
Keepdoing
thisuntilallelectrical
equipment
hasbeenturned
on,theireffectonthesonardisplaynoted,
thenturnedoff.
Ifyou findnoiseinterferencefromanelectrical instrument,trolling motor,
pump, orradio, tryto isolate theproblem. Youcanusually re-route the
sonarunit's
power
cableandtransducer cable
away
fromthe
wiring
that
is
causing
the
interference.VHFradioantennacablesradiatenoisewhen
transmitting, sobecertaintokeepthesonar'swires
away
fromit.You
may
needtoroutethe
sonarunit's
powercable directly
tothe
battery
toisolate
itfromother
wiring
onthe
boat.
Ifnonoise
displays
onthesonarunitfrom
electricalequipment,thenmake
certaineverythingexceptthe
sonarunitisturned
off,
thenstartthe
engine.
Increase theRPM withthegearshift
in neutral. Ifnoise
appears onthe
display,the problemcouldbeoneofthree
things; sparkplugs,alternator,
ortachometer wiring. Tryusing
resistor spark
plugs,
alternatorfilters, or
routing the sonar unit'spowercableawayfromenginewiring. Again,
routing the powercabledirectlyto thebattery helpseliminate noise
problems. Makecertain tousethein-linefuse
suppliedwiththeunitwhen
wiring thepower
cabletothe
battery.
When nonoise
appearsonthe
sonarunitafteralloftheabovetests, then
thenoisesource isprobably cavitation. Manynovices orpersons with
limitedexperience make
hasty
sonar
installationswhichfunction perfectly
in
shallow
water,orwhentheboatisatrest. Innearly allcases, thecause
ofthemalfunction willbethelocationand/or
angle
ofthe
transducer.The
faceofthetransducermustbeplacedin alocationthathasasmoothflow
ofwateratallboat
speeds. Readyour
transducer
owner'smanualforthe
bestmounting position.

PERMANENT MOUNT TRANSDUCER INSTALLATION
The l-IS-WSBK supplied with your Ultra Ill isa transom mount trans-
ducer. It can be installed on any outboard or stern-drive
(inboard\outboard) powered boat. Itcanalso be permanently installed
insidetheboat to"shoot-through" thehullonsome fiberglass boats.
The'kick-up"mounting bracket helps preventdamage ifthetransducer
strikes anobject
whiletheboatis moving,Ifthetransducer does'kick-
up",thebracketcaneasily
bepushed backin place withouttools.
Readtheenclosed transducer installation manual carefullybefore at-
tempting theinstallation. Determinewhichofthemounting positions is
rightforyourboat. Useextreme care ifmounting thetransducer inside
the hull, sinceonceit is epoxied into position, the transducer usually
can'tberemoved without
damagingit. Remember,thetransducer loca-
tionisthemostcriticalpartofasonarinstallation.Ifitisn't doneproperly,
thesonarcan'tperformtoitsdesigned potential.

SPEEDITEMPERATURESENSOR INSTALLATION
(UltraIllPlusOnly)
Mountthe
speed/tempsensorontheboat'stransominalocationwherethe
flowofwateristhesmoothest. There shouldbeaminimumofturbulence
and airbubbles intheChosen location. Theport(left)sideofthetransom
ispreferred, however, thestarboard(right)sidecanbeusedifnecessary.
Donotmountthespeedsensorbehind strakes, ribs,orthru-hull
fittings.
Thesewill disturb theflow ofwaterto the speed sensor. In atypical
installation, thespeed sensor is mounted sixtotwelveinchesfromthe
centerline ofthehull. Thesensormust
always
beinthewatertofunction
properly. Make certain thechosen location isin thewater even athigh
speed orwhentheboat isonplane.
Once
you
determinethe
properlocation,place
thesensoronthetransom.
Makecertain thesensorsbottomisflushwiththebottomofthe hull. Mark
thetransomin
four
places,twoineach slot. Drilla5/32'mountingholeat
each location. Mountthesensortothehull withfour#10 stainless steel
screws. Use a good grade ofcaulking compound to seal thescrews.
Adjust
thesensorso itisflushwiththebottomofthehulland tightenthe
screws.
Ifthebaseofthetransom
hasa
radius,
fillthe
gap
betweenthetransomand
thesensorwith
caulkingcompound. Thiswillhelp
ensureasmoothwater
flow.
Routethesensorcabletothein-lineconnectorontheUltraIllPlus'power
cable. The
speed/temp sensorisnowreadyforuse.
