INSTRUCTIONS FOR EDCO MODEL CD-5 & CD-3 SCABBLER
BEFORE STARTING OPERATION:
compressor output of 150 CFM @ 90 PSI or larger is recommended.
Also, check the level of the lubricator. The proper oil to use is one with a viscosity of 32
centi-strokes (ISO-32). For example, Citgo AW-32 hydraulic oil or Lubriplate HO-32 hydraulic oil.
Determine if the slab is structurally sound and safe. While your Scabbler delivers a
controlled impact and should not damage the base, care should be taken that the
slab is strong enough to withstand the impact of repeated hammering.
A slab less than 4 inches thick may crack under repeated hammering.
OPERATING MACHINE:
Before starting, this machine be sure to read and understand this entire operator’s manual. Hook
Do not exceed 60 feet of 3/4” hose.
Be sure to us a “whipchek” safety cable at this joint. Failure to do so could result in
serious bodily injury or death. Before supplying the air hose with air, ensure that the
operating valve on the console is in the “OFF” position.
To start operation, grasp handle bars and turn operating valve to the “ON”
position and pistons will start pounding the pavement. The machine will feel as though the
into the slab. The CD-3 or the CD-5 should be moved slowly in a side to side sweeping motion to
ensure a consistently uniform removal of material. The CD-5H should be moved in a forward &
reversed motion to work alongside the edge of a curb. As the machine is operating, it may become
necessary to adjust the hammering action. The addition of an air pressure regulator between the
pistons in the cylinder head may be adjusted from 0 PSI, minimum, to 90 PSI, maximum.

EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT CO., INC.
Page 8
Figure 4
Check oil level at this point and add if needed.
The air pressure should be regulated between 40 PSI and the maximum of 90 PSI depending on
how aggressive the machine needs to be to accomplish the job. During operation, it will be necessar
to periodically stop the machine and visually inspect the level of condensation (water) that might
accumulate in the water separator bowl located near your air supply (compressor). If the
accumulation of water exceeds the maximum level as marked on the bowl, it will be necessary to
drain the unit near your air supply. Check owners manual of your compressor on how to drain the
water separator.
In addition, during operation it will be necessary to maintain the correct amount of oil in the lubricator.
This oil in the lubricator is essential to the operating life of the components in the cylinder head. The
rusting of the surfaces. The adjustment is located under the cap with the red center as shown Figure
4, below follow manufacturers instructions for adjustment.
Turning the adjustment screw counter-clockwise will increase the oil drip rate and turning
adjustment screw clockwise will decrease the oil drip rate. The drip rate is set at the factory to 2.5.

When work is complete, close the air compressor outlet valve and turn the operating
valve to the “ON” position to empty the high pressure air from the hose before disconnecting the
machine from the compressor. Be sure to disconnect the unit from the air source
when not in use.

Maintenance:
If the scabbler is to be stored or not used for extended periods of time it is recommended
that the following suggestions be followed:
(2) Fill lubricator with proper grade of oil (Figure 4).
Refer to page 10 (Figures 5 & 6) to complete the following.
(3) Remove top plate from cylinder block, remove top caps, and generously apply the proper oil to
top of pistons. Manually move the pistons up and down through their cycle several times to
ensure all surfaces are coated with oil. Generously oil the top of the cylinders. Reassemble the
machine taking care to ensure that the o-ring seals on the cylinder top caps are not damaged.

Grinding/cutting/drilling of masonry, concrete, metal and other materials can generate dust, mists and fumes containing
chemicals known to cause serious or fatal injury or illness, such as respiratory disease, cancer, birth defects or other
reproductive harm. If you are unfamiliar with the risks associated with the particular process and/or material being cut or
the composition of the tool being used, review the material safety data sheets and/or consult your employer, the manufac-
turers/suppliers, governmental agencies such as OSHA and NIOSH and other sources on hazardous materials. California
and some other authorities, for instance, have published lists of substances known to cause cancer, reproductive toxicity,
or other harmful effects.
Control dust, mist and fumes at the source where possible. In this regard use good work practices and follow the rec-
ommendations of the manufacturers/suppliers, OSHA/NIOSH, and occupational and trade associations. Water should
be used for dust suppression when wet grinding/cutting/drilling is feasible. When the hazards from inhalation of dust,
mists and fumes cannot be eliminated, the operator and any bystanders should always wear a respirator approved by
NIOSH/MSHA for the material being used.
Grinding/cutting/drilling of masonry, concrete and other materials with silica in their composition may give off dust or mists
containing crystalline silica. Silica is a basic component of sand, quartz, brick clay, granite and numerous other minerals
and rocks. Repeated and/or substantial inhalation of airborne crystalline silica can cause serious or fatal respiratory
diseases, including silicosis. In addition, California and some other authorities have listed respirable crystalline silica
as a substance known to cause cancer. When grinding/cutting/drilling such materials, always follow the respiratory
precautions mentioned above.
