This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device,

SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT
PLEASE READ THIS SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT (“LICENSE
AGREEMENT”) CAREFULLY. THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT IS A LEGAL
AGREEMENT BETWEEN YOU AND ELECTRONICS FOR IMAGING, INC. (“EFI”)
REGARDING THE EFI SOFTWARE (“SOFTWARE”). BY INSTALLING, COPYING
OR OTHERWISE USING THE SOFTWARE, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THIS
LICENSE AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, DO NOT INSTALL, COPY, OR
OTHERWISE USE THE SOFTWARE AND YOU MAY RETURN THE UNUSED
SOFTWARE, WITH PROOF OF PAYMENT, FOR A FULL REFUND TO THE PLACE
OF PURCHASE WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS OF THE PURCHASE DATE.
License
EFI grants you a limited, non-exclusive license to use the Software solely in accordance with
the terms and conditions of this License Agreement, solely as specified in the EFI product
documentation, and solely with the product(s) specified in the EFI product documentation
(“Product(s)”).
The term “Software” as used in this License Agreement shall mean the EFI software and all
documentation, downloads, on-line materials, bug fixes, patches, releases, release notes,
updates, upgrades, technical support materials, and information regarding the EFI software.
The terms and conditions of this License Agreement shall apply to and govern your use of any
such item to the extent that EFI does not provide a separate or additional written license
agreement for such item.
The Software is licensed, not sold. You may use the Software solely for the purposes described
in the EFI product documentation. You may not rent, lease, sublicense, lend, or otherwise
distribute the Software or use the Software in any time sharing, service bureau, or similar
arrangement.
You may not make or have made, or permit to be made, any copies of the Software or portions
thereof, except one (1) backup or archive copy for the purposes permitted in this License
Agreement; provided, however, that under no circumstances may you make or have made, or
permit to be made, any copies of any portion of the Software that is included on any portion
of the controller board or hardware of a product. You agree not to localize, translate,
disassemble, decompile, decrypt, reverse engineer, discover the source code of, modify, create
derivative works of, or in any way change any part of the Software.
Intellectual Property Rights
You acknowledge and agree that all rights, title, and interest, including all intellectual property
rights, in and relating to the Software, all EFI Products, and all copies, modifications, and
derivative works thereof, are solely owned by and shall remain with EFI and its suppliers.
Except for the express limited license granted in this License Agreement, no right or license of
any kind is granted. You receive no rights or license under any patents, copyrights, trade secrets,
trademarks (whether registered or unregistered), or other intellectual property. You agree not
to adopt, register, or attempt to register any EFI trademark or trade name or any confusingly
similar mark, URL, internet domain name, or symbol as your own name or the name of your
affiliates or products, and agree not to take any other action which impairs or reduces the
trademark rights of EFI or its suppliers.
Confidentiality
The Software is confidential, proprietary information of EFI and you may not distribute or
disclose the Software. You may, however, permanently transfer all of your rights under this
License Agreement to another person or legal entity provided that: (1) such a transfer is
authorized under all applicable export laws and regulations, including the laws and regulations
of the United States, including the United States Export Administration Regulations; (2) you
transfer to the person or entity all of the Software (including all copies, updates, upgrades,
media, printed documentation, and this License Agreement); (3) you retain no copies of the
Software, including no backup, archival, or other copies, however stored; and (4) the recipient
agrees to all of the terms and conditions of this License Agreement.
Termination
Unauthorized use, copying, or disclosure of the Software, or any breach of this License Agreement
will result in automatic termination of this license and will make available to EFI other legal
remedies. In the event of termination, you must destroy all copies of the Software and all
component parts thereof. All provisions of this License Agreement relating to confidentiality of the
Software, disclaimers of warranties, limitation of liability, remedies, damages, governing law,
jurisdiction, venue, and EFI’s intellectual property rights shall survive any termination of this
license.
Limited Warranty and Disclaimer
EFI warrants that the Software, if used as specified in the EFI product documentation, will
perform substantially in accordance with the EFI product documentation for a period of ninety
(90) days from the date of receipt. EFI makes no warranty or representation that the Software will
meet your specific requirements, that the operation of the Software will be uninterrupted, secure,
fault-tolerant, or error free, or that all defects in the Software will be corrected. EFI makes no
warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of any other Products or
services or any third party products (software or hardware) or services. THE INSTALLATION
OF ANY THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS OTHER THAN AS AUTHORIZED BY EFI WILL
VOID THIS WARRANTY. USE, MODIFICATION, AND/OR REPAIR OF THE
SOFTWARE OR AN EFI PRODUCT OTHER THAN AS AUTHORIZED BY EFI WILL
VOID THIS WARRANTY. FURTHER, THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS VOID IF A
PROBLEM WITH THE SOFTWARE ARISES FROM ACCIDENT, ABUSE,
MISAPPLICATION, ABNORMAL USE, VIRUS, WORM, OR SIMILAR
CIRCUMSTANCE.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, EXCEPT FOR THE
EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY SET FORTH ABOVE (“LIMITED WARRANTY”), EFI
MAKES AND YOU RECEIVE NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES RELATING
TO THE SOFTWARE, ANY PRODUCT AND/OR ANY SERVICES, WHETHER EXPRESS,
IMPLIED, STATUTORY, OR IN ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS AGREEMENT OR
ANY OTHER COMMUNICATION. EFI SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ALL IMPLIED
WARRANTIES, REPRESENTATIONS, AND CONDITIONS, INCLUDING THOSE OF
SECURITY, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND
NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS. THERE IS NO WARRANTY OR
REPRESENTATION THAT THE OPERATION OF THE SOFTWARE AND/OR ANY
PRODUCT WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, FAULT-TOLERANT, SECURE, OR ERROR-
FREE. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, YOUR SOLE
AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY, AND THE ENTIRE LIABILITY OF EFI AND ITS
SUPPLIERS, RELATING TO ANY AND ALL SOFTWARE, PRODUCTS, SERVICES, AND/
OR APPLICABLE WARRANTIES SHALL BE, AT EFI’S OPTION, (1) TO REPAIR OR
REPLACE THE SOFTWARE THAT DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED WARRANTY; OR
(2) PROVIDE A REFUND OF THE PRICE PAID (IF ANY) FOR THE SOFTWARE THAT
DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED WARRANTY. EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN THIS
SECTION, EFI AND ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL PROVIDE NO REFUNDS, RETURNS,
EXCHANGES, OR REPLACEMENTS.
Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, YOU AGREE THAT
THE ENTIRE LIABILITY OF EFI AND ITS SUPPLIERS FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO
ANY SOFTWARE, PRODUCT, SERVICES, AND/OR THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT,
REGARDLESS OF THE FORM OF ACTION (WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT,
UNDER STATUTE, OR OTHERWISE), SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT PAID
BY YOU, IF ANY, FOR THE EFI SOFTWARE. YOU AGREE THAT SUCH AMOUNT IS
SUFFICIENT TO SATISFY THE ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS LICENSE
AGREEMENT AND THAT SUCH A LIABILITY IS A FAIR AND REASONABLE
ESTIMATE OF ANY LOSS AND DAMAGE LIKELY TO BE SUFFERED IN THE EVENT
OF ANY WRONGFUL ACT OR OMISSION BY EFI AND/OR ITS SUPPLIERS. TO THE
MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL EFI
AND ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR COST OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE
SOFTWARE, PRODUCTS OR SERVICES, LOST PROFITS OR DATA, THIRD PARTY
CLAIMS, OR ANY SPECIAL INDIRECT, RELIANCE, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY,
PUNITIVE, OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY
THEORY OF LIABILITY, RELATED TO ANY SOFTWARE, PRODUCT, SERVICES AND/
OR THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT. THIS LIMITATION SHALL APPLY EVEN IF EFI AND
ITS SUPPLIERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
YOU AGREE THAT THE PRICE OF THE EFI SOFTWARE REFLECTS THIS
ALLOCATION OF RISK. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT THE
FOREGOING LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND DISCLAIMERS FORM AN
ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT, WITHOUT WHICH EFI
WOULD NOT HAVE LICENSED THE EFI SOFTWARE TO YOU.

BECAUSE SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW SOME OR ALL OF THE
EXCLUSIONS AND/OR LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY HEREIN, SOME OR ALL OF
THE ABOVE EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
You are hereby notified that Adobe Systems Incorporated, a Delaware corporation located at
345 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110-2704 (“Adobe”) is a third-party beneficiary to this
License Agreement to the extent that this License Agreement contains provisions which relate
to your use of any software, font programs, typefaces, and/or trademarks licensed or supplied
by Adobe. Such provisions are made expressly for the benefit of Adobe and are enforceable by
Adobe in addition to EFI. ADOBE WILL HAVE NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER TO
YOU FOR ANY ADOBE SOFTWARE OR TECHNOLOGY LICENSED HEREUNDER.
Export Restrictions
The Software and EFI Products are subject to the export laws and regulations of the United
States, including the United States Export Administration Regulations. The license granted to
you herein is conditioned upon your compliance with all applicable export laws and
regulations, including the export laws and regulations of the United States. You represent and
agree that you will not use, disclose, distribute, transfer, export, or re-export any portion of the
Software or any EFI Product in any form in violation of any applicable export laws and
regulations, including the export laws and regulations of the United States.
U.S. Government Restricted Rights
Use, duplication, or disclosure of the Software by the United States Government is subject to
restrictions as set forth in FAR 12.212 or DFARS 227.7202-3 -227.7202-4 and, to the extent
required under U.S. federal law, the minimum restricted rights as set out in FAR 52.227-14,
Restricted Rights Notice (June 1987) Alternate III(g)(3) (June 1987) or FAR 52.227-19 (June
1987). To the extent any technical data is provided pursuant to the Agreement, such data is
protected per FAR 12.211 and DFARS 227.7102-2 and to the extent explicitly required by the
U.S. Government, is subject to limited rights as set out in DFARS 252.227.7015 (November
1995) and DFARS 252.227-7037 (September 1999). In the event that any of the above
referenced agency regulations are modified or superseded, the subsequent equivalent regulation
shall apply. The name of the Contractor is Electronics for Imaging, Inc.
Governing Law and Jurisdiction
The rights and obligations of the parties related to this License Agreement will be governed in
all respects by the laws of the State of California exclusively, as such laws apply to contracts
between California residents performed entirely within California. The United Nations
Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and any other similar convention
does not apply to this License Agreement. For all disputes related to the Software, Products,
Services, and/or this License Agreement, you consent to the exclusive personal jurisdiction and
venue of the state courts in San Mateo County, California and the federal court for the
Northern District of California.
General
This Agreement is the entire agreement held between us and supersedes any other
communications or advertising with respect to the Software, Products, Services, and any other
subject matter covered by this License Agreement. If any provision of the License Agreement
is held invalid, such provision shall be deemed modified to the extent necessary to be
enforceable and the other provisions in this License Agreement shall continue in full force and
effect.

About the illustrations in this guide
The illustrations in this guide reflect the current shipping version of the E-8000 at the
time of publication. Components shown in these illustrations are subject to change. To
receive information about any E-8000 components that do not match the illustrations in
this guide, contact your authorized service/support center.
Terminology and conventions
The terms “replace” and “replacing” are typically used throughout this guide to mean
reinstallation of existing components. Install new components only when necessary.
The term “LCD” refers to the liquid crystal display window on the Control Panel on the
front of the E-8000. Except in certain situations (for example, system software
restoration and installation; motherboard replacement), once the E-8000 has booted up,
this window displays a static logo screen that cannot be changed.
The buttons to the left and right of the LCD on the Control Panel are not used except to
allow you to perform certain operations, such as installing or restoring system software or
updating the system after you install a new motherboard. Instructions for using the
buttons are provided where applicable.
The term “ network administrator” refers to the person responsible for maintaining the
network at the customer site.
The term “Control Panel” refers to the area on the front of the E-8000, including the
green/red activity light, the display window (LCD), and the buttons to the right and left
of the display window.
The term “DVD/CD-RW drive” refers to a disk drive that supports DVDs (digital
versatile disks) and compact discs with read/write capability.
The term “system software” refers to the operating system software and Fiery system
software installed on the E-8000 hard disk.
The term “10/100/1000TX” refers to 10/100/1000 megabits per second (Mps) baseband
data transmission over twisted-pair wire.
References to other E-8000 documents, such as Configuration and Setup, are displayed in

Precautions
Always observe the following general precautions when installing and servicing
the E-8000:
• Report any shipping damage.
If there is any evidence of shipping or handling damage to the packing boxes or their
contents, save the damaged boxes and parts, and call the shipper immediately to file
a claim.
•Never alter an existing network without permission.
The E-8000 will probably be connected to an existing Local Area Network (LAN) based
on Ethernet hardware. The network is the link between the customer’s computer, existing
laser printers, and other prepress equipment. Never disturb the LAN by breaking or
making a network connection, altering termination, installing or removing networking
hardware or software, or shutting down networked devices without the knowledge and
express permission of the system or network administrator or the shop supervisor.
•Never assign an IP address in E-8000 Network Setup.
Only the network administrator should assign an IP address to a network device.
Assigning the E-8000 an incorrect IP address may cause unpredictable errors on any or
all devices connected to the network.
• Always disconnect power before opening the E-8000.
•Use care when handling parts of the E-8000, because some edges on the unit may be
sharp. For example, be careful when:
•Accessing the DVD/CD-RW drive (keep the drive door closed when not in use)
•Plugging in cables at the back of the unit
•Removing the panels
•Follow standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions while working on the
internal components.
Static is always a concern when servicing electronic devices. It is highly unlikely that
the area around the copier and the E-8000 is static-free. Carpeting, leather-soled shoes,
synthetic clothing fibers, silks, and plastics may generate a static charge of more than
10,000 volts. Static discharge can destroy the circuits etched in silicon microchips, or
dramatically shorten their life span. By observing standard precautions, you may avoid
extra service calls and save the cost of a new board.

When possible, work on a ground-connected antistatic mat. Wear an antistatic
grounding strap, grounded at the same place as the antistatic mat. If that is not possible:
•Attach a grounding strap to your wrist. Attach the other end to a good ground.
•When you unpack the E-8000 from the carton for the first time, touch a metal area of
the copier to discharge the static on your body.
•Before you remove the side panel(s) and handle internal components, touch a metal
part of the E-8000.
• Leave new electronic components inside their antistatic bags until you are ready to
install them. When you remove components from an antistatic bag, place them on a
grounded antistatic surface, component-side up.
• When you remove an electronic component, place it into an antistatic bag
immediately. Do not walk across a carpet or vinyl floor while carrying an unprotected
board.
•Do not damage or remove the gaskets affixed to one edge of the side panels and around
the DVD drive enclosure. The gaskets are designed to reduce possible electromagnetic
interference (EMI).
•Handle printed circuit boards by their opposing edges only, and avoid touching the
contacts on the edge of the board.
•Protect the thermal material on the base of the heatsink. If you remove the CPU
cooling assembly (for instance, when transferring the CPU to a new motherboard),
avoid touching the thermal material on the base of the heatsink. When setting the
heatsink aside, set it base-side up.
•Never set any liquid on or near the E-8000 or the copier.
Tools you will need
To install or service the E-8000, bring the following tools and parts to the
customer site:
• ESD wrist grounding strap and antistatic mat
•Wire cutters
•Needlenose pliers
• #0 and #1 Phillips head screwdrivers (non-magnetic)
•Flathead screwdriver
Also bring this guide, documentation for any optional service kits you may be installing,
and any technical notes for the E-8000.

The E-8000 adds computer connectivity and highly efficient Adobe PostScript 3 printing
capability to copiers. It is optimized for high-speed network communications,
processing, rasterization, and printing of continuous tone color and monochrome pages.
Features
The E-8000, as an integral part of the customer’s printing system, enables
users to:
•Send images over AppleTalk, TCP/IP, and IPX networks to print on
E-8000-supported devices.
•Spool print jobs and select a printing priority for each job. Users can control spooled
print jobs sent to the E-8000 with remote user software running on networked PC and
Mac OS computers.
•Print color, grayscale, and black-and-white files.
•Use the copier as a high-resolution color scanner with Remote Scan software.
•Use 136 resident fonts (126 Adobe Type 1 PostScript and 10 TrueType), plus two
Adobe Multiple Master fonts used for font substitution when printing PDF files.
Use Downloader or any third-party LaserWriter downloader, such as the Adobe Font
Downloader, to download additional fonts.
•Use built-in ColorWise color management and NetWise network features.

Introduction
How the E-8000 operates
The E-8000 enables the customer to use the copier as a printer and scanner. Users can
print to the E-8000 from networked PCs running Microsoft Windows, from networked
Mac OS computers, and from networked UNIX workstations running TCP/IP.
The E-8000 custom-designed copier interface board and system software are responsible
for efficient image processing and printing controls. The main functions of components
and software are described in the following paragraphs.
The E-8000 uses the motherboard and the copier interface board to process image data
for printing and scanning images.
The motherboard includes a 3.06GHz CPU that controls the image data transfer to and
from the copier interface board and runs the interpreter. The interpreter rasterizes the
page description file and compresses the image pattern into memory.
The interpreter sends compressed raster data through the image frame buffer memory to
the copier interface board. The copier interface board decompresses the image data and
sends it to the copier through the copier interface cable. The raster data supplied to the
laser in the copier charges the drum and renders the final image on paper at full copier
speed.
High-speed DIMMs (dual in-line memory modules) on the motherboard hold the image
data during printing. The E-8000 is configured with four 256MB DIMMs for a total of
1GB of memory.
When the copier is used as a scanner, the E-8000 acquires red, green, and blue (RGB)
image data from the copier, stores it in memory, and transmits it to the computer that
requested the scan.

The E-8000 supports a variety of applications for creating and printing pages of text
and/or images. The E-8000 operates over a network.
Sending print jobs over a network to the E-8000 allows users to print documents directly
from the applications in which they are created. In addition, the E-8000 offers an
efficient way to print files that have been saved as PostScript (PS), Encapsulated
PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), or Tagged Image File Format
(TIFF). These files can be downloaded directly to the E-8000.

Installation sequence
Before you attempt an installation, familiarize yourself with this chapter and Chapter 3
of this guide. The installation sequence described in this chapter is designed to make your
job as easy as possible. Installation problems are easier to avoid and diagnose if you
proceed from the component to the system level and verify functionality at each stage.
Figure 2-1 on page 2-2 outlines the recommended installation procedure for connecting
the E-8000 to the copier.
Because the E-8000 is a node on the customer’s computer network, make sure you
coordinate your scheduled installation with the network administrator at the customer
site. For Network Setup information, refer the network administrator to Configuration
and Setup on the User Documentation CD.
