Welcome to HDHomeRun for Mac
Network-connected digital TV tuner/recorder
Be sure to read this guide, as it covers important aspects of installing and configuring your new
HDHomeRun for Mac.
If you follow these instructions, you should be watching beautiful digital TV on your Mac in no time.
HDHomeRun System Requirements
HDHomeRun for Mac requires the following minimum system configuration:
•100/1000base-T Ethernet network with DHCP server
•TV antenna and/or digital cable connection
•A Macintosh computer with 500 MHz G4 or higher processor (dual-processor G5 or Intel
Core Duo recommended for playing HD content.)
•Mac OS X version 10.4 or higher
•512 MB of RAM
•Internet connection required to use the integrated electronic program guide (not available
in Canada).
•A CD/DVD recorder and Toast Titanium (version 7 or 8) software is required to create
DVDs, SVCDs or Video CDs. (not included)
Open and Unpack Box
Your HDHomeRun package contains the following items:
•HDHomeRun digital TV tuner
•EyeTV 2 software and PDF documentation on CD-ROM
•An Activation Key sheet, with two EyeTV 2 activation keys (inside the case for the CD)
•Ethernet cable
•Two RF cables
•AC power adapter
The HDHomeRun can be installed anywhere you have convenient access to your antenna/cable con-
nections and an Ethernet network connection. It does not have to be installed near your computer.

Quick Start Guide
Step One: Connect the Power Adapter
a. Connect the cable from the power adapter to the power jack on the back of the
HDHomeRun.
b. Plug the power adapter into an available power outlet.
Step Two: Attach HDHomeRun to Your Network
To attach the HDHomeRun to your network:
a. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port on the back of the HDHomeRun.
b. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available Ethernet port on your net-
work switch.

Networking notes: The HDHomeRun has a 100base-T Ethernet port, but you can of
course use it on either a 100base or Gigabit network. Older-style network hubs are not
recommended; network switches will give much better performance. The HDHomeRun
configures its network settings automatically, using DHCP; consequently, your router
must have DHCP enabled.
Step Three: Attach HDHomeRun to Antenna or Cable
The HDHomeRun has two identical digital tuners, and two inputs for antenna or cable TV connec-
tions. Either input can be used for antenna or cable, but in most cases you will connect both inputs to
the same source.
Antenna - The HDHomeRun package does not include an antenna. Depending on your location
relative to the nearest digital television transmitter, you may be able to use an indoor antenna opti-
mized for HDTV reception or you may need to install an outdoor antenna.

Cable - If you have a digital cable connection, it is probably your best choice. Most cable companies
rebroadcast all the same digital channels that you’d be able to pick up with an antenna. In addition,

they often include other non-encrypted channels (i.e. local cable access channels, shopping chan-
nels, and so forth) that you will be able to watch with the HDHomeRun.
If your antenna system or cable only has one output available, you can use a video splitter to attach it
to both inputs on the HDHomeRun.
a. Use the two provided video cables to connect the two inputs on the back of the
HDHomeRun to the outputs of your cable/antenna/splitter.
b. If using a splitter, connect the other side of the splitter to the antenna or cable connec-
tion.
Step Four: Install EyeTV Software
a. Insert the EyeTV CD-ROM.
b. Drag the EyeTV application to the Applications folder on your hard disk.
c. Eject the EyeTV CD-ROM
Step Five: Find Your Available Channels
a. Launch the EyeTV software.
b. The EyeTV Setup Assistant will start automatically. Follow the on-screen directions.

c. After selecting your country, you’ll need to specify which hardware you want to config-
ure. Choose Elgato from the top menu, and HDHomeRun from the bottom menu.
d. Continue through the Assistant, entering your activation key and confirming the connec-
tions to the tuner. The HDHomeRun includes two activation keys, so you can use
EyeTV on two separate computers at the same time. Use a different key for each com-
puter.
e. Next, you’ll specify whether each tuner is connected to cable or an antenna. You can
also choose to disable one of the tuners if you wish. You might do this if you want to
limit this particular Mac only using one tuner.
Note: If you have more than one HDHomeRun connected to your network, you’ll need
to choose which one you want to configure from the Device menu. (the unique Device
ID can be found on the bottom of the HDHomeRun unit.)
f. Continue with the setup of your TitanTV account and enter the login information.

g. When you arrive at the Auto-Tune screen, make sure the correct ‘Service’is shown (ca-
ble or antenna/ATSC), then click the Auto-Tune button.
h. Auto-Tune may take several minutes, depending on the number of channels available
on your system.
i. When Auto-Tune is complete, continue through the steps to choose your location and
channel lineup, and register your system with Elgato.
Note: if you have connected both an antenna and cable, you will need to repeat the auto-tune proc-
ess to look for channels on the other tuner. See the HDHomeRun FAQs on at faq.elgato.com for de-
tails.
Step Five: Identifying All Your Channels
If you are using an antenna, you are now ready to watch TV. You can view your programs via the
Live TV window. Use the on-screen remote control to pause or skip through video, or to start a man-
ual recording. Refer to the EyeTV Manual for more details on the Internet programming via the Elec-
tronic Program Guide (EPG) from TitanTV and scheduling automated recordings.
If you are using digital cable, you have just a bit more work to do. Because the cable companies
are not required to transmit names or program information along with the channels that they rebroad-
cast, there will be some channels that the HDHomeRun can’t identify. In order to see program infor-
mation, you’ll need to go through those manually and match them up with their names in the TitanTV
guide. It’s well worth the little effort, as you’ll end up with many more channels to watch.

The Channel Listing
If you look at the channel listing in the EyeTV Programs window, you’ll see something like this:
You can double-click on any channel in the list to start watching it.
In the Channels list you’ll see three different types of entries:
1. The channels which could be identified are at the top of the listing and already have
their EPG source set to TitanTV. Their check-marks will be set to ‘on’and they will show
up in the Program Guide window.
2. Next you may see some channels which have names, but that could not be automati-
cally matched to entries in TitanTV. Their check-marks will also be on, but they won’t
show up in the Program Guide until you match them up.
3. And finally there will be channels with no names. These will be ‘unchecked’initially.
Matching Things Up
When identifying channels, it’s helpful to log into your TitanTV account using a web browser. You can
then look at the current schedule for your area, which makes it a lot easier to figure out what a par-
ticular program might be.
a. Log in to the TitanTV.com web site and add your cable provider’s Digital Cable lineup to
your account, then go to the Digital Cable program listings grid.

b. Go through all the un-matched channels, tuning to each one and trying to identify it.
Watch this channel’s content for a while until you know which channel it actually is.
Many channels show their name or logo, which really helps.
c. When you’ve identified a particular channel, select it in the list and choose the ‘TitanTV’
entry in the EPG column.
d. The TitanTV channel list will open. You can use the search function at the top to narrow
down the list if you like. Find the channel in the list and select it. Click the Assign button.

e. Repeat the process for all the unknown channels.
Step Six: Watching TV
When you’re done, you should have program information for all your channels, something like this:

Miscellaneous
Front Panel Lights
The HDHomeRun tuner has several green LED indicator lights on its front panel. They indicate
whether the unit has power, is connected to a network and when each tuner is in use.
