When installing the TZ09 unit, please read this handbook carefully.
The manufacturer shall not be held responsible for any damage or injury
caused by use, even correct, of its products.
The data and characteristics of the product may be modified without prior notice
According to the protocol used, the messages exchanged between the host and TZ09
are amongst the following control characters:
- command from host to TZ09:
STX ADDR command ETX
- reply of the TZ09 to the host:
STX ADDR reply ETX
The character STX corresponds to 02 hex,
the character ETX corresponds to 03 hex,
the ADDR field is the address of the TZ09: from 30 hex to 37 hex (or from 0 to 7 in ASCII)
The contents of the command and reply fields are the same as the commands indicated
above for the RS232 protocol except for the CR character (hex 0D) which is omitted in this
case.
8.1 Commands managed
The commands that can be sent via RS485 are all those envisaged for RS232 except for
the "Set RS485 communication parameters" command:
- video and audio switching command
- video switching command
- audio switching command
- status request
- creation of a preset
- recall of a preset
- firmware release identification request.
- global status request
- video preview
- audio preview
- video + audio preview

- mute audio
Example: in this case the format of the video switching command will be as follows:
STX ADDR VXXYY ETX where: V is the character Hex 56
XX is the output (from 01 to 08)
YY is the video input (from 01 to 08)
The TZ09 matrix replies:
STX ADDR ACK ETX where: ACK is the character Hex 06
if the command has been performed correctly
STX ADDR NACK ETX where NAK is the character Hex 15
if transmission errors have been detected or incorrect parameters.
Therefore, the switching command of video input 5 to bus 4 for the TZ09 with address 2
will be as follows:
STX 2 V 04 05 ETX(in Hex code: 02 32 56 30 34 30 35 03)
the matrix will reply with:
STX 2 ACK ETX (in Hex code: 02 32 06 03) or with:
STX 2 NACK ETX (in Hex code: 02 32 15 03)

TZ09 8X8+1 VIDEO AND AUDIO MATRIX
The TZ09 is an 8X8 video and audio stereo matrix with fixed preview outputs.
A built-in loudspeaker permits immediate local audio monitoring.
A headphones output is also provided.
The characteristics of this unit such as the loop type video inputs, the
breakaway and the possibility of control using a computer via RS232 make it
suitable for a range of both broadcasting and multi-media applications.
The ninth fixed preview output permits use of the matrix also as broadcasting
unit for TV studios.
The possibility of saving and recalling 8 configurations, via RS232, makes the
TZ09 highly versatile for presentations.
−The TZ09 unit
- This handbook - The mains cable - The remote control
(optional)

2.0 POWER SUPPLY
The TZ09 must be powered at 230 Vac 50Hz using the cable provided.
The cable must be terminated in the related panel plug on the left at the back of
the unit.
The panel plug is complete with fuse-holder for 5X20 fuses.
If the fuse blows, replace with a fuse with the same rating as specified on the
back of the unit (T 500mA).
WARNING
All operations must be carried out by qualified personnel only
who must be informed of the risks of electric shock.
In some countries, the power plug must be adapted to local standards.
The wires are identified according to the following coding:
- Brown PHASE (Identified with the letter L, may be red)
- Blue NEUTRAL (Identified with the letter N, may be black)
- Yellow/Green GROUND (Identified with the letter E, may be green)
WARNING
A ground connection is mandatory.
7.15 Set RS485 communication parameters
The host must send the following sequence:
CASR followed by CR where: C is the character Hex 43
A is the address of the matrix (from 0 to 7)
S is the TX/Rx speed (1 or 2)
1 = 2400 bit/sec
2 = 9600 bit/sec
R is the reply time (from 1 to 7) in multiples of 16 msec.
1 = 16 msec
2 = 32 msec
3 = 48 msec
4 = 64 msec
5 = 80 msec
6 = 96 msec
7 = 112 msec
The TZ09 matrix replies:
ACK (Hex 06) if the command has been performed correctly
NACK (Hex 15) if transmission errors have been detected
Example: to program the TZ09 connected as unit with address 4, Tx speed of 2400
bit/sec and a reply time of 80 milliseconds, the following characters must be sent on line:
43 34 31 35 0D
8.0 CONTROL USING COMPUTER via RS485
On its site www.elprovideolabs.com, Elpro has made available software running under
Windows suitable for controlling the TZ09 via RS232 or RS485. If the user intends to
develop personalized software, the protocols to be implemented both RS232 and RS485
are available on the same site. All functions of the TZ09 can be controlled through
transmission/reception by a computer of strings of hexadecimal and ASCII characters.
The transmission protocol is of the master/slave multi-point type where the TZ09 are the
slaves while the host that controls these is the master. Up to 8 TZ09, identified by
addresses form 0 to 7 can be connected on the 485 bus.
The characteristics of the serial connection are:
8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and speed settable to 2400 or 9600 baud
The transmission speed, the address of the unit and the reply time can be set with a
suitable command from RS232. The reply time of the TZ09 is the time that must pass
between end of reception of the command and the start of transmission of the reply. This
time allows the host to release the 485 bus and to prepare to receive without casing
conflicts.
The default parameters are as follows:
- speed = 9600 bit/sec
- unit address = 0 (30 hex)
- reply time = 32 ms

5.0 LOCALE CONTROL
5.1 Switching of the signals
The 8 video and audio outputs of the unit can be controlled using the console
on the front panel.
The "MODE" button is used to select operating mode:
-Audio only (green led on)
-Video only (red led on)
-AFV (both leds on)
In "standard" mode, to perform switching, the INPUTS-OUTPUTS sequence
must be complied with, i.e. first of all select an input and then the output to
switch to which the input selected. As regards operations:
The 8 buttons with built-in led called "INPUTS" are used to select a source.
When a source is selected, this is immediately switched to the PREVIEW
output.
The 8 "OUTPUTS" buttons are used to switch the previously selected input to
the output.
Machine status is monitored on the led type matrix.
The color of the led indicates the type of signal on the output:
-green indicates audio
-red indicates video
-orange indicates audio and video (AFV or Audio Follows Video).
In "Free running" mode, the switching sequence may be INPUTS-OUTPUTS or
OUTPUTS-INPUTS. WARNING
"Free running" operation must be enabled

- speed : 9600 bit/sec
- unit address : 0 (30 hex)
- reply time : 32 ms

10.0 Notes
When installing the TZ09 unit, please read this handbook carefully.
The manufacturer shall not be held responsible for any damage or injury
caused by use, even correct, of its products.
The data and characteristics of the product may be modified without prior notice
According to the protocol used, the messages exchanged between the host and TZ09
are amongst the following control characters:
- command from host to TZ09:
STX ADDR command ETX
- reply of the TZ09 to the host:
STX ADDR reply ETX
The character STX corresponds to 02 hex,
the character ETX corresponds to 03 hex,
the ADDR field is the address of the TZ09: from 30 hex to 37 hex (or from 0 to 7 in ASCII)
The contents of the command and reply fields are the same as the commands indicated
above for the RS232 protocol except for the CR character (hex 0D) which is omitted in this
case.
8.1 Commands managed
The commands that can be sent via RS485 are all those envisaged for RS232 except for
the "Set RS485 communication parameters" command:
- video and audio switching command
- video switching command
- audio switching command
- status request
- creation of a preset
- recall of a preset
- firmware release identification request.
- global status request
- video preview
- audio preview
- video + audio preview
- audio preview volume level
