2Chapter 1 – Introduction
What is the Osprey Personal Tracker?
The Osprey Personal Tracker is a compact, lightweight device for personal tracking and two-way
messaging that uses satellite technology, as illustrated in Figure 2-1.
The Osprey uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to obtain the operator's current position
and an Inmarsat satellite for the two-way text messaging system and tracking reports.
The Osprey allows a tracking application running on a remote computer to display and track the
operator's current position, and to communicate with the operator using selectable text messages.
The text messages can be customized to your organization's specific needs.
The tracking application available from EMS Global Tracking is "ViewPoint", which is a web-based
application that is accessed through a web browser running on a personal computer (PC). ViewPoint
is able to display the operator's current position on a map, send and receive messages and distribute
messages sent from one Osprey to other Ospreys in the same fleet.
The Osprey can be used from any location on the Earth's surface, except near the polar regions.

How the Osprey Operates
During normal operation, the Osprey remains dormant for a preset period of time, then 'wakes up' at
scheduled intervals to report your current position (including heading and speed) to the ViewPoint
application, and to receive any messages that have been sent to you. The interval between
scheduled communications is configured in ViewPoint, and the default is 8 minutes.
Any messages that you send using the Mailbox Compose option or 'Point-of-Interest' key are sent as
soon as the Osprey obtains a GPS fix. Alert messages are sent immediately the ‘Alert’ key is
pressed.
This method of operation results in very low power consumption and maximum battery life between
charges.
If required, separate position reporting and message receive intervals can be configured in ViewPoint.
This flexibility allows the tracking and messaging frequency to be balanced against the desired
battery life.
For more information, refer to Understanding the Communication Cycles on page 17.
Feature Summary
Your Osprey also incorporates the following features:
•Alert Mode – In urgent situations, you can activate the Osprey's Alert Mode by pressing the
Alert key. This sends an alert message to the ViewPoint operator and normally, depending
on how the system is configured in ViewPoint, reduces the interval between scheduled
position messages (default 2 minutes). It also switches on the Inmarsat modem
continuously, allowing faster message delivery from ViewPoint to the Osprey.
For more information, refer to Using Alert Mode on page 28.
•Point of Interest – This feature allows you to send a message to the ViewPoint application
to record a particular location.
For more information, refer to Sending Point-of-Interest Messages on page 27.
•Mailbox – The Osprey's mailbox stores incoming and outgoing messages and allows you to
view or reply to them at any time.
For more information, refer to About the Mailbox on page 16.
•Stealth Mode – When you need to operate your Osprey discreetly, selecting Stealth Mode
switches off the audible bleeper tone, reduces the screen brightness and switches off the
keypad backlighting.
For more information, refer to Changing the Osprey's Settings on page 29.
•User Identification – ViewPoint can be configured to require you to enter a user ID, or user
ID and PIN. This allows the ViewPoint operator to confirm your identity. You may be
requested to provide these login details at scheduled intervals, on demand, and when you
switch on or reset the Osprey.

About Airtime Charges
Airtime charges are based on the number of messages (including routine position reports) sent and
received. Alert mode can increase the number of messages and may therefore incur additional costs,
depending on the tariff used. Users should refer to their tariff plan for details of charges.
Staying Safe
EMS Global Tracking recommends that the Osprey is used only as part of a larger system or plan to
maintain the safety and security of operators. The Osprey has been designed to achieve the highest
level of performance and reliability, but as with all technology-based products, there exists a risk of
breakdown, performance reduction or other problem (including strong solar flares) that could delay or
prevent messaging and position acquisition. It is therefore strongly recommended that additional
measures are in place to ensure that the safety and security of operators are not compromised by
such an event.

4Chapter 3 – Getting to Know the Osprey
Introduction
This chapter gives you a guided tour of the Osprey, helping you to get to know all the physical
features of the device. It also introduces you to important screen display features, describes how to
charge the battery and gives guidance on positioning and carrying the Osprey so as to get good
satellite reception.
Positioning and Wearing the Osprey
The Osprey uses both GPS and Inmarsat satellites. When used without an optional remote antenna, it
is important that the Osprey has the best possible clear sky view at all times in order to take
advantage of the available satellite signals. Positioning the Osprey in a high upright position with a
clear line of sight to the sky ensures the best connection. You can use the sky view test (page 31) to
test the quality of the sky view.
The satellite Locator tool (page 30) illustrates your location in relation to the nearest Inmarsat satellite
and helps to position the Osprey to aid successful communication. The line of sight to the Inmarsat
satellite should not be obstructed by buildings, dense trees, vehicles, etc. As a general rule, when in
the northern hemisphere, the nearest Inmarsat satellite is located to the south, and when in the
southern hemisphere, it is located to the north.
Remember the following:
•Give the Osprey the best view of the sky whenever possible.
•Locate the Osprey at the highest possible position, free from obstructions and safe from
damage.
•Nearby radar transmitters, other satellite communications equipment and microwave dishes
may affect the performance of the Osprey.
•Keep the Osprey as far as possible from other electrical/electronic devices in order to
minimise interference.
•Do not position on hot surfaces.
•Regularly review the Osprey's location by checking the signal strength icons, ensuring that
any messages that you have sent are moving from the Outbox to the Sent Items mailbox
(see Sending Messages on page 23) and being alert to any POOR SKY VIEW AFFECTING
PERFORMANCE notification given on the screen.

The back of the carrier has a rectangular hole pattern. If required, this allows the Osprey to be
mounted onto an AMPS-compatible mounting surface, which are often used to mount devices inside
vehicles.
If the Osprey is mounted inside a vehicle, a remote antenna (not supplied with the Osprey) should be
fitted to the outside of the vehicle and connected to the docking connector on the bottom of the
Osprey. For further information, please refer to the remote antenna installation instructions.
The straps (1, 2, 3) must be
fed correctly through the slots
(as shown here) to enable the
Osprey to fit easily into the
carrier. The ring fits over the
top of the Osprey.
Carry the Osprey at a high
position. Carrying the Osprey from
the waist is not recommended.
