Application
TheFTR20 flow indicator for bulk solids is a non-contact
devicebased on microwave technology. It is ideally suited for
monitoringpneumatic and mechanical transport processes for
bulksolids. The compact device can be used wherever the cost-
effectivemonitoring of bulk solids movement is required.
Typicalareas of application or bulk solids are:

•Foodindustry: Coffee, tea, tobacco, cereals, malt etc.

Individualadjustments to the application are carried out

2�1 Requirements for personnel
Thepersonnelforinstallation,commissioning,diagnosticsandmaintenancemustmeetthe
following requirements:
•Trained,qualiedspecialists:Mustbequaliedforthisspecicroleandtask
• Authorized by the plant operator
• Familiar with national regulations
• Before starting work: Read and make sure you have understood the instructions in the
manualandsupplementarydocumentationaswellasthecerticates(dependingonthe
application)
• Follow the instructions and comply with the general requirements
Operating personnel must meet the following requirements:
• Must be instructed and authorized according to the requirements of the task by the plant
operator
• Follow the instructions in this manual
2�2 Designated use
The device described in these Instructions is intended only for movement detection of bulk
productsandthedetectionofchangesofamassow.Dependingontheversionordered,the
devicecanalsomeasurepotentiallyexplosive,ammable,poisonousandoxidizinguids.
To ensure that the device remains in proper condition for the operation time:
• Use the device only for fluids against which the process-wetted materials are adequately
resistant.
•Observethelimitvalues(→55).
Incorrect use
The manufacturer is not liable for damage caused by improper or non-designated use.
Verification for borderline cases:
•Forspecialfluidsandfluidsforcleaning,Endress+Hauserisgladtoprovideassistance
inverifyingthecorrosionresistanceoffluid-wettedmaterials,butdoesnotacceptany
warranty or liability.
Possible burn hazard from touching surfaces!

Please note the following points:
•Store in the original packaging to ensure protection from shock.
• The permitted storage temperature is -40 to +80 °C (-40 to +176 °F); storage at the
temperature limits is only permitted for a limited time (maximum 48 hours).
4�5 Disposal of packaging
The carton is environmentally compatible and 100% recyclable in accordance with European
Directive 2004/12/EC on packaging (recyclability is confirmed by means of the RESY symbol
on the carton).

process connection. This enables easy installation in existing container couplings or nozzles.
 Fordevicesintendedforuseinhazardousareas,pleasereadtheinformationandcomply
with the instructions in the Ex documentation (XA).
Foroptimalorientationaerinstallationintheprocess,theelectronicshousingcanberotated
as desired (by 360 °).

•AnyorientationispossiblefortheFTR20owindicatorforbulksolids.However,asmall
angleαmayincreasethesignalquality.
•We recommend an angle of 45 ° for applications with material detection on conveyor belts.

Thesimplestmountingmethodisbyscrewingintotheprocesswall.Todothis,a
correspondinginternalthread(Rp1½,1½NPTorG1½)mustbeavailableintheprocess.

Installation procedure:
Screw the R 1½ or 1½ NPT self-sealing connecting thread into existing screw-in thread.

Align the housing of the electronics.
Fix the housing in place.

Installation procedure:
Slide the enclosed process seal over the process connection and screw the non-self-sealing
connection thread G 1½ into the existing screw-in thread.

Tighten the lock nut on the connection thread.

Fix the housing in place.

•Iftheprocessconnectionisnotscrewedfarenoughintotheprocesswall,thereisariskthat

risk of damage occurring as a result of large product items falling.

6�1 Connection requirements
Please note the following points before connecting up the device:
•Thevoltagesupplymustmatchthevoltagespeciedonthenameplate.
•Switchothesupplyvoltagebeforeconnectingthedevice.
• Connect a potential matching line to the terminal to be used on the FTR20 before
connecting the device to the power supply.
•Whenconnectingtothepublicpowersupply,apowerswitchforthedevicemustbeinstalled
withineasyreachofthedevice.Theswitchistobeidentiedasadisconnectingdevicefor
the device (EN/IEC 61010).
•Thecableglandsandconnectorsarepermittedforconnectingxedcablesandlinesonly.
The operator must ensure adequate strain relief.
• The device is to be attached so that the cable gland is protected from mechanical damage
(degree of mechanical hazard "low" – impact energy: 4 joules).
•Unusedguideopeningsmustbesealedousingsealingplugs,theplastictransportsealing
plug does not meet this requirement and must therefore be replaced during installation.
 Fordevicesintendedforuseinhazardousareas,pleasereadtheinformationandcomply
with the instructions in the Ex documentation (XA).

•Theplugconnectorsareonlyapprovedforconnectingxedcables.Theoperatormust
provide suitable strain relief.
For the electrical connection with connectors there are suitable prefabricated connection
cablesavailableasaccessory(→54).
6�2 Potential equalization
The following requirements apply to the potential equalization:
• The potential equalization must be connected to the external ground terminal on the
FTR20.
•Foroptimalelectromagneticcompatibility,thepotentialequalizationlineshouldbeasshort
as possible.
• The recommended cable cross-section is 2.5 to 4 mm2.
• The potential equalization for the FTR20 must be integrated into the existing potential
equalization on site.

There are terminals on the inside or connectors on the outside for the electrical connection.
• For the electrical connection with connectors there are suitable mating connectors available
fororderingaccordingtotheproductconguratororasaccessory.

and then tighten cap nut with by ½ turn.
