INSERT SELECTION GUIDE
Most inserts are available in two grades of material - Heavy Duty and Tungsten Carbide tipped. Under normal use in a cost
basis, the most expensive grade will give the best cost versus insert life (i.e. carbide is better than standard). Concave face
permits easy wire entry, at face permits stripping ush to the coil body and bullet nose permits stripping in conned areas.

L SERIES MODEL WIRE STRIPPERS & LEAD CLEANERS
OPERATING MANUAL
AIR SUPPLY:
Model L4 only
The L4 requires a clean, lubricated air supply which
can deliver 3 C.F.M. at 90 PSI. Attach an air tting of
the proper style to the end of the air hose to enable
it to be connected to the air supply. If the optional
PR0003 combination air/lter/lubricator is being used,
the air hose of the L4 should be connected to the
output side of this and the air supply connected to the
other side.
! CAUTION: Never operate the L4 at an air pressure
higher than 90psi.
OPERATION:
NOTE: Safety glasses or other suitable eye protection
should be worn when using these units.
Models L2S, L2AS, PL3S:
The L2S, L2AS, and PL3S may be operated with
either clockwise or counter-clockwise motor rotation.
This feature facilitates longer insert life. When an
insert begins to wear, reverse the rotation to utilize the
opposite stripping edges of the insert. To change the
direction of motor rotation, turn o power to the unit, and
then press the switch located on the rear of the unit.
Turn the unit on. Insert the wire into the stripping insert.
The wire will strip while being pushed in, not while
being withdrawn. If the wire does not strip, turn the
unit o, remove the guard and use the collet adjusting
wrenches to tighten the insert further. Replace the
guard and try the wire again. Repeat this procedure as
often as necessary until a satisfactory strip is achieved.
If using the strip length stop (models L2S or L2AS
only) insert the wire until it butts against the stop, then
withdraw. Once set, the unit may be used continuously.
OPERATION (PL3S Only):
! CAUTION: Do not bend the exible shaft
assembly tighter than a 4” radius. Permanent
damage will result.
Keep the unit clean and free of insulation dust, and
replace inserts when worn. No other maintenance is
required.
Replace the collet assembly with stripping insert and
the plastic guard.
After replacing the collet assembly and guards on the
unit, connect the unit to the power supply.
SET-UP:
INSERT INSTALLATION:
Installation of the stripping insert into the collet is the
same for all models except where specied.
Remove the guard. Models L2S and L2AS have a
plastic guard. Models PL3S, and L4 have a metal
guard.
The collet has two parts. The rst holds the stripping
insert and is mounted on the motor shaft by use of
a set screw. The second part screws onto the rst
part and varies the pressure on the insert to allow
adjustability for dierent wire sizes. It is not necessary
to remove the collet assembly from the motor shaft to
install the stripping insert. Unscrew the front part of the
collet from the insert holder. Slide the insert into the
holder, aligning the slots in the insert with the slots in
the holder.
On Models L2S, PL3S and L4, the insert should
protrude 1/8” - 3/16” (3.1 - 4.8mm) from the front of the
collet. Screw the front part of the collet back on and
nger tighten. Slide a sample of the wire to be stripped
into the insert. Use the collet adjusting wrenches in
the ats on the collet to tighten the collet down until
the sample wire is tight in the insert. Remove the wire.
Replace the guard.
On the L2AS, push the insert all the way in until it
stops. There is a small at on the rear of all 1/2” inserts
used on these units. This feature will prevent the insert
from slipping in the collet during stripping. The insert
should be oriented so that the at is aligned with the
small set screw located on the outside of the collet.
Push the insert into the collet until it seats on the inside
shoulder of the collet, then tighten the set screw down
on the at using the Allen wrench provided with the
unit. For proper operation, ensure that the stripping
insert is seated on the shoulder inside the collet and
the set screw engages the at on the stripping insert.
STRIP LENGTH STOP:
Models L2S and L2AS only
Models L2S and L2AS have a strip length stop rod that
protrudes from the motor shaft and is held in place by
a small set screw on the motor shaft. Using the larger
of the 3 Allen wrenches provided, loosen the set screw
holding the collet assembly to the motor shaft, and
slide the assembly o the shaft. Adjust the strip length
rod to the desired position using the smaller of the
Allen wrenches provided.

GROUND LOCATION
This protective Earth ground label is
located inside the housing beside the
ground wire. This wire is connected to
the Power Supply Cable and is wired
back through the Mains supply to
ground.
CAUTION LABEL
Refer to the operating instructions
before using this unit. High voltage
is inside this unit and power must be
disconnected before servicing.
ON/OFF LABEL
This is the ON/OFF switch. Press I
for on and press O for o. This switch
is also the anti-start switch. In case
of power outage, this switch must be
reset for the unit to operate.
ROTATION DIRECTION
Rotation of the head may be reversed
by pressing this rotation switch.
SYMBOLS:
Models L4
The L4 will only operate with counter-clockwise
rotation. Depress the handle to start the unit and insert
the wire into the insert. The wire will strip as it is being
inserted, not as it is being withdrawn. If the wire does
not strip, release the handle, remove the metal guard
and use the collet adjusting wrenches to tighten the
insert. Replace the guard and strip the wire again.
Repeat this procedure as often as necessary until a
satisfactory strip is achieved.
The L4 model has a slotted motor adjusting screw
located on the bottom of the unit near the air intake
end. The speed of the motor may be adjusted slightly
by turning the screw.
MAINTENANCE:
Models L2S, L2AS, PL3S
Keep the unit clean and free of insulation dust, and
replace inserts when worn. No other maintenance is
required.
Model PL3S only
It may be necessary to replace the exible shaft
assembly periodically.
To replace the assembly unsnap the handpiece
assembly from the exible shaft assembly by pulling
apart. Unscrew the motor coupling from the motor
ange and remove the casing from the core of the
exible shaft. Remove the 4 screws attaching the
motor ange to the motor and slide the ange ahead of
the brass coupling.
NOTE: Be careful not to lose the spacers behind the
ange washer.
Remove the brass coupling from the motor shaft by
unscrewing the locking screw and sliding it o. Replace
the new exible core and casing and reverse the
operations. When reinstalling the motor ange, be sure
the ange washer and spacers are relocated correctly
within the motor housing and the screw holes are
properly aligned.
NOTE: When reinstalling the handpiece onto the
exible shaft assembly, the key on the core must align
with the groove in the handpiece. It may be necessary
to rotate the collet assembly to properly align the
handpiece.
Model L4
The L4 unit should be lubricated DAILY with a turbine
or spindle grade oil containing a rust inhibitor with a
viscosity of 100 to 150 S.U.S. at 100° F. To lubricate,
unscrew the air hose from the back of the unit and
pour 2-3 drops of oil directly into the intake port of the
unit. The handle hinge pin should also be lubricated
periodically, using a drop of lightweight oil. Replace
inserts when worn, and keep unit clean and free of
insulation dust.
