2 SAFETY
Users of ESAB welding equipment have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that anyone who
works on or near the equipment observes all the relevant safety precautions. Safety precautions
must meet the requirements that apply to this type of welding equipment. The following recommen-
dations should be observed in addition to the standard regulations that apply to the workplace.
All work must be carried out by trained personnel well--acquainted with the operation of the welding
equipment. Incorrect operation of the equipment may lead to hazardous situations which can result
in injury to the operator and damage to the equipment.
1. Anyone who uses the welding equipment must be familiar with:

Slocation of emergency stops
Sits function
Srelevant safety precautions
Swelding
2. The operator must ensure that:
Sno unauthorised person is stationed within the working area of the equipment when it is
started up.
Sno--one is unprotected when the arc is struck
3. The workplace must:

4. Personal safety equipment
SAlways wear recommended personal safety equipment, such as safety glasses, flame--proof
clothing, safety gloves.
SDo not wear loose--fitting items, such as scarves, bracelets, rings, etc., which could become
trapped or cause burns.
5. General precautions
SMake sure the return cable is connected securely.
SWork on high voltage equipment may only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
SAppropriate fire extinquishing equipment must be clearly marked and close at hand.
SLubrication and maintenance must not be carried out on the equipment during operation.

3 INT ODUCTION

r280 Pro is step controlled power source in a compact design, intended for welding with
solid steel, stainless steel or aluminium wire as well as flux--cored wire with or without shielding gas.
The machine is equipped with facilities for connection of the MIG ”spool--on” gun torch (type:
MT--250SG, ST23A+Adapter KIT ST--23A).
ESAB’s accessories for the product can be found on page 46.

Duty cycle
The duty cycle refers to the time as a percentage of a ten--minute period that you can weld at a cer-
tain load without overloading.
Enclosure class
The IP code indicates the enclosure class, i. e. the degree of protection against penetration by solid
objects or water. Equipment marked IP23 is designed for indoor and outdoor use.
Application class
The symbol indicates that the power source is designed for use in areas with increased
electrical hazard.
5 INSTALLATION
The installation must be executed by a professional.
WA NING!
This product is intended for industrial use. In a domestic environment this product may cause radio
interference. It is the user’s responsibility to take adequate precautions.
5.1 Placing
Position the welding power source such way that its cooling air inlets and outlets are
not obstructed.
5.2 Electrical installation
Mains voltage
All machines are factory configured for highest rated voltage and are fitted with appropriate marking
tape on the mains cable.

Mains voltage selection
Migmasterr280 Pro is delivered in versions configurable for following mains voltages:
S208/230V and
S208/230/460/575V
actory configuration is set for 230V and 575V respectively.
In order to adapt the machines for the other voltages, it is necessary to reconnect the main
transformer TM1 and control transformer TC1 as shown and described on the schematic diagrams.
5.3 Welding voltage polarity
Welding voltage polarity may be changed as shown below.
5.4 Mains power supply
Check that the unit is connected to the correct mains power supply voltage, and that it is protected by
the correct fuse size. A protective earth connection must be made, in accordance with regulations.

6 OPE ATION
General safety regulations for the handling of the equipment can be found on
page 4. Read through before you start using the equipment

There is a risk of tipping while transportation and operation, if the welding machine leans

6.2 Switching--on and overheating protection
When machine is switched on with switch [1], the indicating lamp “ON” is lit. If the ma-
chine is not overheated (lamp [2] is off) it is ready to work. If the internal temperature
during welding becomes too high, the welding is interrupted and disabled. This state is
indicated by permanent lighting of the orange indicating lamp [2] on the front of the unit.
It resets automatically when the temperature falls down.
6.3 Operation
Operator can manually select and set welding parameters as follows:
Srequired welding voltage (and thus welding current) with knob [3], [3a]
Warning: Operating the knobs [3], [3a] during the welding process (loaded
power source) can cause heavy damage to the unit !!!
Sappropriate wire feed speed with knob [7]
Sinitial wire speed (”creep start”) with selector [12] (wire feeder compartment)
Sburn--back time with knob [10] (wire feeder compartment)
Sspot welding (optional), activated by turning the knob [6] clockwise, spot welding
time increases while turning the knob [6] clockwise; set knob [6] in the left utmost
position in order to return to the continuous welding.
If the welding gun is used, welding process starts after its trigger is pressed and the wire
speed is controlled with potentiometer [7] on the front panel.
If the spool--on gun is used, welding process starts after its trigger is pressed, the spool--
on gun motor starts and wire speed is controlled with the potentiometer in the spool--on
gun grip.
Note: or spool--on gun current cable connection it is necessary to use the OKC ”T”
adapter or Adapter KIT ST--23A, depending on used spool gun (see Accessories on
page 46).
Machine is fitted with V/A digital instrument [8] (with ”hold” function i.e. memorising of
the last values of welding voltage and current).
6.4 eplacing and inserting wire
SOpen the side panel.
SPlace the spool on the hub and secure it with the lock.
SDisconnect the pressure sensor by folding it backwards, the pressure rollers
slide up.
SStraighten out the new wire 10--20 cm. ile away burrs and sharp edges from the
end of the wire before inserting it into the wire feed unit.
SMake sure that the wire goes properly into the feed roller track and into the outlet
nozzle and the wire guide.
SSecure the pressure sensor.
SClose the side panel.

6.5 Wire feed pressure
Start by making sure that the wire moves smoothly through the wire guide. Then
set the pressure of the wire feeder’s pressure rollers. It is important that the
pressure is not too great.

To check that the feed pressure is set correctly, you can feed out the wire against
an insolated object, e.g. a piece of wood.
When you hold the gun approx. 5 mm from the piece of wood (fig. 1) the feed
rollers should slip.
If you hold the gun approx. 50 mm from the piece of wood, the wire should be
fed out and bend (fig. 2).
6.6 MIG process set--up guide
In the following table recommended welding settings are shown, depending on the
joint type, workpiece thickness and filler wire diameter.
To set machine for welding:
Sfind the plate thickness (T) and type of joint,
Sfind the diameter (d) of the filler wire,
Sin the column corresponding to the appropriate material and shielding gas find
the suggested arc voltage and wire feed setting; for spot welding find additionally
recommended time setting,
Sset arc voltage with knobs [3], [3a] and wire feed speed with knob [7].
NOTE: The given recommendations only serve as rough guide for the operator, optimal
set--up may differ from the one in table. It depends on mains voltage deviation, precision of
the wire speed setting, applied welding techniques, welding position, shielding gas etc.
If needed, some corrections of the arc voltage and wire speed may be tried out for
satisfactory results.

7 MAINTENANCE
Regular maintenance is important for safe, reliable operation.
Note
All guarantee undertakings from the supplier cease to apply if the customer himself
attempts any work in the product during the guarantee period in order to rectify any
faults.
7.1 Inspection and cleaning
Check regularly that the power source is free from dirt.
The power source should be regularly blown clean using dry compressed air at reduced
pressure. More frequently in dirty environments. Otherwise the air inlet/outlet may be-
come blocked and cause overheating.
Welding gun
SCleaning and replacement of the welding gun’s wear parts should take place at
regular intervals in order to achieve trouble--free wire feed. Blow the wire guide
clean regularly and clean the contact tip.
The brake hub
The hub is adjusted when delivered, if
readjustment is required, follow the instructions
below. Adjust the brake hub so that wire is slightly
slack when wire feed stops.
SAdjusting the braking torque:
STurn the red handle to the locked position.
SInsert a screwdriver into the springs in the hub.
Turn the springs clockwise to reduce the braking torque
Turn the springs anticlockwise to increase the braking torque. NB: Turn both
springs through the same amount.

8 FAULT T ACING
Try these recommended checks and inspections before sending for an authorised service technican.

European standards IEC/EN 60974--1 and EN 60974--10. It is the obligation of the servi-
ce unit which has carried out the service or repair work to make sure that the product
still conforms to the said standard.

Il incombe à l’utilisateur d’un équipement de soudage ESAB de prendre toutes les mesures
nécessaires pour garantir la sécurité du personnel utilisant le système de soudage ou se trou-
vant à proximité. Les mesures de sécurité doivent répondre aux normes correspondant à ce
type d’appareil. Le contenu de ces recommandations peut être considéré comme un complé-
ment à la réglementation ordinaire relative à la sécurité sur le lieu de travail.
L’utilisation de l’appareil doit être conforme au mode d’emploi et exclusivement réservée à des
opérateurs habilités. Toute utilisation incorrecte risque de créer une situation anormale pou-
vant soit blesser l’opérateur, soit endommager le matériel.

2. L’opérateur doit s’assurer:

Sque personne n’est sans lorsque l’arc est amorcé.
3. Le poste de travail doit être:
Sconforme au type de travail
Snon soumis à des courants d’air.
4. Protection personnelle
SToujours utiliser l’équipement recommandé de protection personnelle, tel que lunettes protec-
trices, vêtements ignifuges, gants protecteurs.
SEviter de porter des vêtements trop larges ou par exemple une ceinture, un bracelet,
etc. pouvant s’accrocher en cours d’opération ou occasionner des brûlures.
5. Divers
SS’assurer que les câbles sont bien raccordés.
SSeul du personnel spécialement qualifié est habilité à intervenir sur le système
électrique.
SUn équipement de lutte contre l’incendie doit se trouver à proximité et clairement signalé.
SNe pas effectuer de graissage ou d’entretien en cours de marche.

3 INT ODUCTION
Migmasterr280 Pro sont des sources de courant de soudage de formes compactes avec
commutateur pas a pas, destinées au soudage avec fil solide en acier, en acier inoxydable et en
aluminium ainsi qu’au soudage avec fils tibulaires avec ou sans gaz de protection.
Les machines MM203 / 253 sont conçues avec la facilité de brancher un pistolet de soudage a bobine
(spool--on gun, type : MT--250SG, ST23A+Adapter KIT ST--23A).

Le facteur d’intermittence est le temps, exprimé en pourcentage d’une période de 10 minutes, pen-
dant lequel il est possible de souder à une charge déterminée.
Classe de protection
Le code IP indique la classe de protection, c’est--à--dire le degré d’étanchéité à l’eau et aux
particules solides. Les machines marquées IP 23 sont utilisables à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur.
Classe d’utilisation
Le symbole signifie quele générateur est conçu est conçue pour une utilisation dans des

5 INSTALLATION
L’installation doit être assurée par un technicien qualifié.
ATTENTION!
Ce produit est destiné à un usage industriel. Dans des environnements domestiques ce produit
peut provoquer des interférences parasitaires. C’est la responsabilité de l’utilisateur de prendre
les précautions adéquates.
5.1 Placement
Placez le générateur de soudage de telle manière que les tuyères d’entrée et de
sortie de l’air de refroidissement ne soient pas obstruées.

5.2 Installation électrique
Voltage primaire
Les machines sont préréglées a l’usine a une tension assignée plus élevée et elles sont dotées d’une
bande de marquage appropriée sur le câble primaire.

5.3 Polarité du voltage de soudage
La polarité du voltage de soudage peut etre changée tel que décrit ci--dessous.
5.4 Alimentation secteur
Vérifiez que la tension d’alimentation est correcte et que l’installation est protégée par un fusible de
calibre approprié. L’installation doit être reliée à la terre, conformément aux réglementations en
vigueur.
