B4 Installing a Condensation Trap (If more than 4m ue length)
Internalcondensatedrainagepipeworkmustbeaminimumof19mmID(typically22mmOD)plastic
pipeandthisshould“fall”atleast45mmpermetreawayfromthecondensatecollector,takingthe
shortest practicable route to the termination point.
Thefirstcomponentofthecondensatedischargesystemshouldbea‘U’traporsyphonwithamini-
mumtrapheightof75mm.Theuseofasyphonwouldbethepreferredmethodwhendischarging
toanexternalterminationpoint.Howevercaremustbetakenwheninstallingthesyphontoensure
thatitismountedtomanufacturer’sinstructions.
Inordertominimisetheriskoffreezingduringprolongedperiodsofverycoldweather,oneofthe
followingmethodsofterminatingcondensatedrainagepipeshouldbeadopted:
1: INTERNAL TERMINATION:
Whereverpossible,thecondensatedrainagepipeshouldbeterminatedatasuitableinternal
foulwaterdischargepointsuchas(a)aninternalsoilandventstackor(b)aninternalkitchenor
bathroomwastepipe,washingmachinewastepipeetc.Asuitablepermanentconnectiontothe
foulwastepipeshouldbeused.Ifconnectingintothewasteofasinkorbasinthe‘U’traporsyphon
shouldbeatleast100mmabovetheheightofthesinkorbasin.
Thepossibilityofwastepipesfreezingdownstreamoftheconnectionpointshouldbeconsidered
whendeterminingasuitableconnectionpoint-e.g.aslightlylongerpiperuntoaninternalsoil
stackmaybepreferabletoashorterrunconnectingintoakitchenwastepipedischargingdirectly
throughthewalltoanexternaldrain.
Where“gravitydischarge”toaninternalterminationisnotphysicallypossible(e.g.thedischarge
pointisabovetheappliancelocation,oraccessisobstructedbyadoorway),orwhereverylong
internalpiperunswouldberequiredtoreachasuitabledischargepoint,thefollowingmeasures
maybeadopted-
2: USE OF A CONDENSATE PUMP (TO AN INTERNAL TERMINATION):
Condensatecanberemovedusingaproprietarycondensatepump.
Thepumpoutletshoulddischargetoasuitableinternalfoulwaterdischargepoint,suchas(a)anin-
ternalsoilandventstackor(b)aninternalkitchenorbathroomwastepipe,washingmachinewaste
pipeetc.Asuitablepermanentconnectiontothefoulwastepipeshouldbeusedandthemanufac-
turer’sdetailedinstallationinstructionsforthepumpshouldbefollowed.
3: EXTERNAL TERMINATION:
Theuseofanexternally-runcondensatedrainagepipe,terminatingatasuitablefoulwaterdis-
chargepointorpurpose-designedsoak-away,maybealsobeconsidered;howeverifthistermina-
tionmethodischosenthenthefollowingmeasuresshouldbeadopted-
Thepipeshouldberuninternallyasfaraspossiblebeforegoingexternallyandthepipediameter
shouldbeincreasedtoaminimumof30mmID(typically32mmOD)beforeitpassesthroughthe
wall(thisistoreducethepossibilityoffreezinginextendedperiodsofcoldweather).
Theexternalrunshouldbekeptasshortaspossible,takingthemostdirectand“mostvertical”route
possibletothedischargepoint,withnohorizontalsectionsinwhichcondensatemightcollect.
Theexternalpipeshouldbeinsulatedusingsuitablewaterproofandweatherproofinsulation.
Additional Important notes:
A) Internalcondensatedrainagepipesruninunheatedareassuchasroofspaces,
basementsandgaragesshouldbetreatedasexternalpipework(seemethod3
above).
B)Ifthecondensatedrainagepipeworkisconnecteddirectlytoaninternalsoilstackorrainwater
downpipeavisibleairbreak(suchasatundish)shouldbeplacedinthecondensatelinetopre
vent‘reverseflow’andfoulwaterenteringtheappliance,followedbyanotherUtrap.
C)Whenarainwaterdownpipeisusedastheterminationanairbreakmustbeinstalledbetween
thecondensatedrainagepipeandthedownpipetoavoidreverseflowofrainwaterintothefire
shouldthedownpipeitselfbecomefloodedorfrozen
D)Considerationshouldbegiventowindchillandallexternalpipesthatterminateatgroundlevel
shouldpassintothegrate.
