3.1BasicSteps
TheTG165isintuitiveandeasytouse;herearethebasicsteps(coveredinmoredetaillaterinthisGuide):
1. PressandholdthePowerbutton for>2secondstopowerON.TheFLIRlogostartupscreenwill
appearfollowedbythethermalimagedisplay.Ifthebatteryrequiresrecharging,refertoSection3.2
below.
2. PointtheTG165towardtheareaorobjectofinterestandviewthethermalimage.Relativetemperature
isrepresentedbycolor,hottocold(lighttodark,respectively).TheIRTemperaturereading(upperlefton
thedisplay)representsthetemperatureofthespottargetedbytheCrosshairsandLaserpointers.
3. Pullthetriggertoactivatethelaserpointers.
4. Releasetriggertofreeze/capturetheimage.Presstosaveimage;presstodiscardimage.
3.2PoweringandChargingtheTG165
Pressandholdthepowerbutton for>2secondstoswitchONtheTG165.Astart‐upscreen(FLIRLogo)will
appear.TheTG165isnowreadytouse;toswitchOFF,pressandholdfor>2seconds.NotethattheAPO(Auto
PowerOFF)functionswitchestheTG165OFFautomaticallyafteraprogrammedperiodoftime(refertothe
SettingsMenusectiontoprogramAPOtime).
WiththepowerON,thebatterystatusiconislocatedatthetoprightofthedisplay.
Whenbatterypowerislow,connecttoanACsourceoracomputerUSBportusing
thesuppliedUSBcable(USBportislocatedattopoftheTG165,underflap).
WithpowerOFF,thebatterysymbolencompassestheentirescreenwhilecharging,
appearingasthesymbolontheleft(Fig3‐1)inasweepinganimationwhen
connectedtoanACsource,andasthesymbolontheright(Fig3‐1)when
connectedtoacomputerUSBport.
TheTG165canalsobepoweredupandinusewhilecharginginwhichcase
thebatterysymbolisanimatedontheupperrightinitsnormallocation.

thermometermeasurementexceedsthepublishedtemperaturerange,thedisplayshowsOL.
IRimagesandIRthermometerreadingsarecapturedbytheIRimaginglensandtheIRthermometerlens
respectively.
Pullthetriggertoactivatethelaserpointers.Thelaserpointersapproximately‘frame’thespotwhoseIR
temperatureismeasured.ThedisplayCrosshairpinpointsthecenterofthespot.

IRThermometersmeasureanobject’ssurfacetemperature.Thethermometer’sopticssenseanobject’semitted,
reflected,andtransmittedenergy.
TheTG165translatesthesensedinformation(approximatelyframedbytheLasersandfurthertargetedbythe
Crosshairs)intoatemperaturereadingthatisdisplayedintextontheupperleftcornerofthedisplay.Ifthe
thermometermeasurementexceedsthepublishedtemperaturerange,thedisplayshowsOL.
TheamountofIRenergyemittedbyanobjectisproportionaltoanobject'stemperatureanditsabilitytoemit
energy.Thisabilityisknownasemissivityandisbasedonthematerialoftheobjectanditssurfacefinish.
Emissivityvaluesrangefrom0.1foraveryreflectiveobjectto1.00foraflatblackfinish.
TheTG165hasbothadjustableandpresetemissivitysettings.Therearefour(4)presetsandanadjustable

whitewhen100%powered.Thewhitecenterofthebatteryicondecreasesasthebatterypowerdiminishes.
Thebatterystatusiconappearsemptywhenthebatteryrequiresarecharge.Notethattemperaturereadings
displayedwhilethebatterysymbolisemptywillbeaccurate.AccuracyisassuredupuntilthemeterswitchesOFF.
6.2ChargingtheBattery
ThebatteryischargedbyconnectingthesuppliedUSBcabletotheTG165(USBportundertopflap)andthentoan
ACsourceortoaUSBportonacomputer.
WithpowerOFF,andtheTG165chargingfromanACsource,thesymbolisdisplayedovertheentirescreen.
WithpowerOFF,andtheTG165chargingfromaUSBport,thesymbolisdisplayedovertheentirescreen.
TheTG165canalsobechargedwithPowerON(ifthebatteryhasenoughchargetopowertheunit).While
chargingwithpowerON(fromeitheranACsourceorUSBcomputerport),thebatterystatusindicator(toprightof
display)appearsanimatedinasweepingmotion.
6.3APO(AutoPowerOFF)
TheTG165automaticallyshutsoffafteraselectableperiodofinactivity.PleaserefertoSection9,SettingsMenu,
forinstructionsonsettingtheAPOtime.TheAPOoptionsareOFF(whereunitdoesnotpoweroffautomatically),1
minute,2minutes,5minutes,or10minutes.

IntheeventthattheTG165displayfreezesor‘locksup’,theTG165canbeforcedtoresetandpowerdown.

TheTG165canstorethousandsofimagesonaMicroSDmemorycard.WhenconnectedtoaPCviathesupplied
USBcable,theMicroSDcardfunctionsasanyexternalstoragedrive.Tostoreimages,acompatibleMicroSDcard
mustbeinsertedintheMicroSDcardslotatthetopofthemeter(undertheprotectiveflap).
WhenacompatibleMicroSDcardisproperlyinsertedintheTG165thememorycardiconwillappearatthe
toprightoftheTG165display.Tocaptureanimageandsaveitto
memory:
1. PointtheTG165atanobjectoranareaofinterest.
2. Pullthetriggertoactivatethelaserpointers.
3. Releasethetriggertocapturetheimage;theimagewill
freezefor5seconds.
4. Presstosavetheimageortodiscardthe
image(seeFig8‐2)within5seconds.
5. IftheimageisstoredsuccessfullyontheMicroSDcard,a
largecheckmarkwillappearonthecenterofthe
display.Iftheimagefailstosave,thisiconwill
appearonthedisplay.Afailuremayindicateafull,
faulty,orincorrectlyinsertedMicroSDcard.
6. Toerase/formatanSDcardpleaserefertoSection9SettingsMenu.
Hint:Afteranimageiscaptured,acheckmarkappearsabovethe button(saveimage)andan
iconappearsabovethe button(discardimage)for5seconds.RefertoFig8‐2.Ifnotbuttonsare
pressedwithin5seconds,theimageisautomaticallydiscarded.

UsetheReviewModetoviewordeletestoredimages.
