1 Principle of Operation
1.1 Overview
A well known dial-up modem connection works like a land-line telephone connection where one
modem is required both on the local side and the remote side. One modem calls the phone number
of the remote side to establish a connection.
Using this method, wireless modems would operate in the voice channel which means:
•Throughput is very slow
•Airtime is expensive
A modern way of a communication via cellular networks is shown in figure 1.

In this case the analysis PC and the measurement equipment establish a connection to the Internet.
Advantages:
•No modem required on PC side.
•High-speed data transfer
•Connection costs are based on the amount of transferred data and not on time consumed.
Disadvantages:
•Without any precautions the PC and the gateway are visible in the Internet.
•Cellular network providers usually assign dynamic IP addresses to their clients. So it can
happen that each time the gateway establish a connection to the Internet it obtains a different
IP address.
In case of a connection to the Fluke 174x the PC is initiating the connection and has to know
the IP address of the gateway on remote side.
To deal with the disadvantage of dynamic IP addresses there are two possibilities:
•Use special SIM cards which offer a static IP address.
Examples of companies who offer these SIM cards are: Wyless, Mdex or WhiteSIM
•Use the service of Dynamic DNS (www.dyndns.com). See description below of how to set up
this service

1.2 Dynamic DNS
The free DynDNS dynamic DNS (Domain Name System) service allows users to have a subdomain
that points to a device connected to the internet with regularly-changing IP addresses. An update
client installed on the user's computer, or built into a networked device such as a router or webcam,
generally keeps the hostname up to date with its current IP address.
The gateway regularly updates the associated IP address of a user defined name on the DynDNS
server (figure 2). With this procedure the gateway can be accessed by either its IP address (which is
normally not known) or the name (figure 3).

Choose one of following models for the desired region/provider:

SIM Card
1. Get a SIM card from your preferred cellular network provider
(Requires service from DynDNS)
2. Use SIM card from one of the following companies:
Wyless, Mdex oder WhiteSIM
RS232 Cable (shipped with 174x)
3 Configuration
3.1 Gateway: Insert SIM card and connect hardware
Follow the Quick Start Guide sheet shipped with the gateway
3.2 Get provider name and connection parameters
•Ask your cellular phone provider for details (APN, username and password)
or
•Go to internet sites with a list of providers around the world
(e.g. http://www.quickim.com/support/gprs-settings.html)

3.3 Configure Digi Connect WAN 3G
Enter http://192.168.1.1 in the URL address bar of your preferred internet browser

Note: If instead of the web site an error message appears please check of a correct assigned IP
address:
oPress the Start icon
oClick on Run
oEnter cmd
oIn command window enter ipconfig followed by the <ENTER> key
oThe Ethernet adapter should have an IP address starting with 192.168.1.xxx. If it is
different from this (like 169.254.xxx.xxx) unplug the Ethernet cable and wait some few
seconds before reconnect the cable again.

Click on Configuration – Mobile and enter the parameter for the cellular provider.
In this example:
Service Provider: European/EMEA Providers
Service Plan: A1.net
Username: [email protected]
Password: [blank]
PIN: [blank]

Note: Please be careful when the PIN is enabled on your SIM card. If the log-on fails (e.g.
the PIN code is wrong) the gateway retries the log-on several times. Typically after the third
attempt the PUK code is required. If you think that the log-on parameter are correct and it
still fails check the SIM in a mobile phone.
Click Apply button
A successful link is indicated a green lighting LED labeled with LINK and 1 to 5 LEDs
according to the signal strength.
Check Internet Connection:
Disconnect the Ethernet cross-over cable and reconnect it. This will reestablish the Ethernet
connection by assigning a new IP address through the DHCP server
To verify the Internet connection, enter a website of your choice (e.g. www.digi.com) in the
URL address bar of the Internet browser and press <Enter>. Connecting to a website
indicates the connection is working.
Click on Configure – Serial Ports
Click on Port 1

Note: If the Gateway is already configured for a profile a window appears as shown in Figure
8. Click on Change Profile to continue with the configuration shown in Figure 7.

3.4 Install RealPort
Download RealPort driver from Digi website
(http://www.digi.com/support/productdetl.jsp?pid=1916&osvid=57&tp=1&s=12)
Connect Ethernet cross-over cable (shipped with Digi gateway) to the PC and gateway and
power the gateway.
Run setup.exe
Select device with IP address 192.168.1.1 in the list

Compare the parameters of the next window with the figure below. Note: The starting COM
port may differ.

Press Finish to complete installation process.
3.5 Verify RealPort Settings in Device Manager
If the port number is not known you can get the information in the device manager:
In Windows click Start – Run
Enter devmgmt.msc and click OK
Look for Multi-port serial adapters and click on the entry Connect WAN 3G.
Open text sensitive menu by clicking with the right mouse button on this entry and choose
Properties
Direct connection vie Ethernet
Cellular network connection (setup described in chapter 4.4)

Go to Advanced tab and choose Properties
A list is shown with the used COM port. Select this port number in PQLog (see details in
chapter 5)

It is recommended to activate the Encrypt Network Traffic checkbox.
3.6 Test Communication
See chapter 5 how test the communication with Fluke 174x Memobox.

4 Configuration of DynDNS
4.1 Create a new account on www.dyndns.com
DynDNS offers a free dynamic DNS which is supported by Digi Connect WAN 3G gateway.
Restrictions of free account:
Number of hostnames (number of devices): 5
Account automatically expires after one month of inactivity
With a small annual fee ($ 11.50 as of 09/2008) the account can be upgraded to 25
hostnames and removes the 30 day update requirement
4.2 Add host name
Login with the DynDNS account name and password
Click on My Services and on Add Hostname
Assign a proper name
e.g. Device_Serialnumber.dyndns.org
In our example it is:
r1745_r875915.dyndns.org (dyndns.org can be chosen in the drop-down list)
Enter IP address
The quickest way is to use the auto detect IP assignment (even if the IP address is not
correct because it is the IP address of the PC)

4.3 Configure Digi Connect WAN 3G for DynDNS update
In Internet browser enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL address bar
Click on Configuration – Network
Click on Dynamic DNS Update Settings
oEnable Use DynDNS.org service
oEnter hostname
oEnter DynDNS account name and password
oSet DynDNS DDNS System to Dynamic DNS
oKeep the default setting of Use Wildcards to No change to service setting
oConnection Method has to set to Standard HTTP port 80

oClick on Apply button
A status of DynDNS update can be found in the event loggings (menu Management – Event
Logging).
4.4 Add RealPort Driver for Communication via Cellular Network
Run setup.exe of RealPort driver installation (see chapter 3.4)
Select Add new Device

Select Device not listed
Enter a descriptive name in field Device Model Name
In frame Network settings select DNS and add the hostname configured in DynDNS
Select 1 in No. of Ports. The installer automatically detects the next free COM port which is
COM 6 in this example.

5 Test communication with Fluke 174x
Connect the Fluke 174x Memobox with the Digi gateway using the red serial cable.
Start PQLog
Click menu Settings – General
Choose serial port of RealPort (shown during RealPort installation or in device manager, see
chapter 3.5)
Click OK
Open Logger info window (click on Info about Logger)
If the window pops up the communication works!
If an error message appears it is likely working after closing all connections to the gateway:
oIn web site click on Management – Connections

oSelect all available connections and press Disconnect
oTry to connect to Fluke 174x again.
