Conditions
Qualified Staff The servicing information provided in this instruction manual is only intended
for qualified staff. An electric shock can be fatal. Please do not carry out any
activities other than those referred to in the documentation. This also applies
even if you are suitably qualified.
All cables and other leads must be firmly attached, undamaged, properly
insulated and adequately dimensioned. Have loose connections, scorched,
damaged or under-dimensioned cables and wires repaired immediately by
an authorised specialist company.
Maintenance and repair may only be carried out by an authorised specialist
company.
There is no guarantee in the case of parts sourced from other suppliers that
these parts have been designed and manufactured to cope with the stresses
and safety requirements that will be placed on them. Use only original spare
parts (this also applies to standard parts).
Do not carry out any alterations, installations or modifications to the machine
without first getting the manufacturer’s permission.
Replace immediately any components that are not in perfect condition.

Safety Precauti-
ons at the Machi-
ne Location
Ensure when installing machines with cooling-air vents that the cooling air can flow freely
through the air vents without obstruction. Only operate the machine with the degree of
protection specified on the rating plate.
Mains connection High-performance devices (> 16 A) can affect the voltage quality on the mains
network because they can feed powerful current into the main supply.
This may affect a number of types of device in terms of:
- connection restrictions
- criteria with regard to maximum permissible mains impedance *)
- criteria with regard to minimum short-circuit power requirement *)

In this case, the plant operator or the person using the device should check
whether or not the device is allowed to be connected, where appropriate
through discussion with the power supply company.
EMC device
classifications
Devices with emission class A:
- are only designed for use in an industrial setting
- can cause conducted and emitted interference in other areas.
Devices with emission class B:
- satisfy the emissions criteria for residential and industrial areas. This
also applies to residential areas in which power is supplied from the
public low-voltage grid.
EMC device classification as per the rating plate or technical specifications
EMC measures In certain cases, even though a device complies with the standard limit
values for emissions, it may affect the application area for which it was
designed (e.g. when there is sensitive equipment at the same location, or if
the site where the device is installed is close to either radio or television
receivers).
If this is the case, then the operator is obliged to take appropriate action to
rectify the situation.
Information on
noise emission
values
The inverter generates a maximum sound power level of <80 dB(A) (ref. 1pW)
when operating under full load in accordance with IEC 62109-1.
The device is cooled as quietly as possible with the aid of an electronic tempe-
rature control system, and depends on the amount of converted power, the
ambient temperature, the level of soiling of the device, etc.
It is not possible to provide a workplace-related emission value for this device
because the actual sound pressure level is heavily influenced by the installati-
on situation, the power quality, the surrounding walls and the properties of the
room in general.

Equipment with the CE mark fulfils the basic requirements of the Guideline
Governing Low-Voltage and Electromagnetic Compatibility. (More detailed
information about this may be found in the Annex or in the section of your
documentation headed “Technical Data”.)
Safety markings
The user is responsible for backing up data relating to changes made to
factory settings. The manufacturer will not accept liability if personal settings
are deleted.

General remarks
Basic system
principle
FRONIUS IS inverters open up totally new prospects for an off-grid power supply. The
new stand-alone inverter is extremely light, can be connected in parallel, offers simple
on-site servicing, total flexibility in terms of configuration and has an informative graphi-
cal display.
Stand-alone systems store the power produced (e.g. from solar modules) in a battery
and make it available as alternating current when required.
As the user’s electricity needs increase, up to 5 additional inverters per phase can be
connected in parallel in 3 phase (maximum) operation, giving a total of 15 FRONIUS IS
inverters in a system. The original set-up can be upgraded at any time by installing
additional inverters, making the system extremely flexible and future-proof.
The backlit, self-explanatory display is a highlight in itself. The display provides informati-
on on the entire system in both graphical and alphanumerical format. The well laid-out
display provides detailed information and shows important readings including battery
charge level and consumption values.
The company’s decades of experience in high frequency technology means that Fronius
devices are exceptionally fault resistant. If a fault should occur, the faulty circuit board
can be replaced quickly and easily on site by our After-Sales Service or by the installer.
The device does not have to be dismantled or sent away. The result - downtime is kept
to a minimum and the power supply is restored in the shortest time possible.
Device concept
Application areas The FRONIUS IS is ideal for use on holiday cottages, mobile homes and boats right
through to entire village power supplies that can be easily supplied by stand-alone
systems.

The FRONIUS IS can be operated as a single device or in parallel mode in conjunction
with several other devices, depending on the power required. Up to 5 devices may be
operated in single-phase mode or up to 15 devices in three-phase mode.
Important! The Sync Module IS is also needed for multi-device operation.

Connecting the
battery and
consumers
The device is designed for the DC voltages indicated on the rating plate. The fuses
needed for the connecting cables are described in the „Technical data“ section. Battery
connecting cables and mains cables for the consumers should be fitted in accordance
with national standards.
NOTE: Inadequately dimensioned electrical installations can lead to serious
damage. The battery connecting cables and their fuses must be rated accordin-
gly. The technical data shown on the rating plate shall apply.
The device is designed solely to generate AC voltage from direct current (DC) drawn
from suitable batteries. Utilisation for any other purpose, or in any other manner, shall be
deemed to be „not in accordance with the intended purpose“. The manufacturer shall not
be liable for any damage resulting from such improper use.
Proper usage also includes complying with all the instructions in the operating instruc-
tions.

se“
The machine is tested to “Degree of protection IP20”, meaning:
- Protection against penetration by solid foreign bodies with diameters > 12 mm (.49
in.)
- No protection against water
The specified degree of protection only applies if the device is fitted correctly as descri-
bed in the operating instructions.
The device must not be set up and operated outdoors. The built-in
electrical parts must be protected from direct wetting. The device must not be turned
upside down or fitted lying on its side in the box.
The venting duct is a very important safety feature. When choosing the machine locati-
on, ensure that the cooling air can enter and exit unhindered through the air ducts.
An all-round clearance of 20 cm (7.87") should be maintained.
CAUTION! Risk of severe damage if the device is connected to the public
mains supply. The device must NOT be connected to the public mains supply.
NOTE! To ensure reliable operation, the battery recharger should only be
connected directly to the battery.

The device is designed for all types of mains supply and may be connected by a
licensed electrical installation engineer in accordance with the applicable national and
international standards:
- The phase and PEN conductor are not connected to the box
- The DC input and AC output are electrically isolated
A trained electrician may also set up a TN network in which the inverter is earthed (a
residual-current circuit-breaker may be used) with due regard to the relevant regulations.
Important! The inverter’s inputs and outputs should be fused in accordance with the
applicable national and international standards.
WARNING! An electric shock can be fatal. If the device is connected to the
battery during installation, there is a risk of serious injury and damage. The
connection compartment should only ever be opened by an authorised electri-
cal engineer. Only carry out work on the machine when
- the mains switch is in the „O“ position,
- the device is isolated from the battery and the consumers.

NOTE! If fixing to the wall, please note the weight of the charger. The bracket
must be fitted to a suitable wall using the correct dowels and screws.
WARNING! Risk of explosion! Do not install the device in areas in which
highly flammable gas mixtures do or could occur. Explosive gas can build up
at floor level when the batteries are charged. Do not install the device in the
vicinity of batteries. Ensure that
- the device is installed at least 50 cm (approx. 18") above floor level
- the area has a plentiful supply of fresh air

Available modes
Stand-by mode STB
In Standby mode, the AC output voltage is switched off. This reduces consump-
tion to the display and data communication components.
AUTO load detection mode
In Load detection mode, a test pulse is applied at the output at regular intervals.
When a load is detected, the device switches on until the consumer is switched
off again. This energy-saving mode may cause a slight delay when consumers
are switched on, depending on the settings made in the Setup menu.
Continuous operation ON mode
In Continuous operation mode, there is a continuous AC voltage (230 V) pre-
sent at the AC output. Any consumers that are connected are ready for use
immediately.
Symbols used
ON mode: Energy flows from the battery via the inverter to the
consumer (continuous operation)
AUTO mode: The device checks whether there is a load
switched on at regular intervals. When a load is detected, the
device switches on with a slight delay until the consumer is
switched off again (load detection mode).
