ABOUT THIS MANUAL
Thank you for buying the GLOBALIS Imapct4550 pro dot matrix
printer. Yo can expect years of reliable service with very little
maintenance. This man al explains how to se yo r printer to f ll
advantage. It is written for both new and experienced printer sers.
This man al describes how to install, set p, and se yo r printer and
printer options. It also explains how to keep the printer in good working
condition and what to do sho ld something go wrong. Detailed
proced res are provided for first-time sers. Experienced sers can skip
some of the details, sing the table of contents and chapter introd ctions
to locate information.
This man al has several appendixes, a glossary, and an index. Appendix
A lists s pplies and additional doc mentation and information available
from yo r dealer or a thorized GLOBALIS representative. GLOBALIS
offices are listed at the end of the man al.
PRINTER MODELS
AND OPTIONS
This man al covers model Ultima 90+, a 136-col mn printer. Each
model has a 100-120 (M33335A) V or 220-240 (M33335B) V power
s pply.
A LAN card, a ser add-on option, can be installed only on printer
models with the Centronics parallel + USB interfaces. Yo m st specify
these when p rchasing the printer.
Other options incl de a c t sheet feeder can be added by yo rself after
p rchasing the printer.

Chapter 1, Introduction, introd ces the printer and identifies key
feat res and options that enhance the printer’s capabilities.
Chapter , Setting Up, gives step-by-step proced res for setting p the
printer for immediate se and identifies the main parts of the printer. If
this is yo r first printer, yo sho ld read the entire chapter before
attempting to se the printer.
Chapter 3, Paper Handling, explains how to load and se paper with
yo r printer.
Chapter 4, Printing, covers basic printing operations. This chapter
describes everyday operations from the printer’s control panel, s ch as
loading paper and selecting print feat res, in detail. After yo become
more familiar with the printer, se Quick Reference at the beginning of
the man al to refresh yo r memory as needed.
Chapter 5, Using Setup Mode, describes how to change the printer’s
optional settings, s ch as print feat res, hardware options, and top-of-
form. Most settings only affect print feat res s ch as the typestyle and
page format. Note that certain settings directly affect hardware and
software compatibility. Refer to this chapter as indicated in Chapter 2 or

 Notes about the printer in operation
WARNING
If the printer is making a strange noise, which indicates a problem, discontin e printer
operation. Req est yo r printer dealer to fix the problem.
Contin ed operation of the printer witho t repairs may res lt in electric shock or fire.
Do not se a power so rce whose voltage is other than that indicated. Also, an excessive
n mber of pl gged-in power cords m st not be connected to a single o tlet.
Otherwise, electric shock or fire may res lt.
Do not spill any liq id, s ch as water, on the printer.
Otherwise, electric shock or fire may res lt.
Do not damage or modify the power cord.
The power cord may be damaged by placing a heavy object on it, stretching it excessively,
forcibly bending it, twisting it, or heating it, and this may res lt in electric shock or fire.
Do not se the power cord if it or the power pl g is damaged or the pl g does not fit sec rely
in the o tlet receptacle.
Using the power cord in that condition may res lt in electric shock or fire.

If excessive heat, smoke, a strange odor, or a strange noise is coming the printer or any other
abnormality is observed, immediately t rn off the power to the printer by sing the power

Then, after verifying the end of the abnormality (e.g., no more smoke is coming from the
printer), req est yo r printer dealer to make repairs. Do not repair the printer by yo rself as
doing so is dangero s.
Contin ed se of the printer when it is operating abnormally may res lt in electric shock or
fire.
If a foreign object (e.g., water or other liq id, metal shard) has entered the printer, immediately
t rn off the power to the printer by sing the power switch, and disconnect the power pl g
from the o tlet. Then, contact yo r printer dealer.
Contin ed se of the printer in that condition may res lt in electric shock or fire. C stomers
who se the printer near children sho ld take especial care regarding this point.
If the printer is dropped or a cover is damaged, t rn off the power to the printer by sing the
power switch, and disconnect the power pl g from the o tlet. Then, contact yo r printer
dealer.

Before performing cleaning, maintenance, or tro bleshooting work on the printer, switch off

the cord.
If yo p ll it o t while grasping the cord, the ins lation may be damaged or the cable core

Do not cover or wrap the printer with a cloth or anything else while it is operating.
Otherwise, heat acc m lates, possibly res lting in fire.
Do not se the power cord with it b nched together.

If the printer operates when the front cover is nclosed, immediately t rn the printer off,
and npl g the power code from wall o tlet.
Then contact yo r printer dealer to make repair of safety interlock.
Contin ed se of the printer in that condition, operation of the mechanism inside of the
front cover may become a ca se of an inj ry.
If the printer is not to be sed for a long time, disconnect the power pl g from the o tlet
for safety reasons.

If a lightning storm is in nearby, disconnect the power pl g from the o tlet.
Leaving the pl g connected to the o tlet may res lt in damage to the printer or other
property damage.

passed to allow them to cool.

the paper feed tractors.
Operate the printer with the paper thickness set to the appropriate paper thickness.
Use only an original ribbon cassette that is specified as s itable by F jits .
Textile fibers acc m late on components inside the printer and parts of the roller, so clean
these parts reg larly.
Do not t rn the ribbon feed knob in the reverse direction.
Otherwise, the ribbon may become jammed and st ck.
If printing is started with a slack ribbon, the ribbon may become tangled or the ribbon feed
mechanism may become locked.
The print head is extremely hot immediately after printing. When replacing the ribbon,
verify that the print head is s fficiently cool before setting the print head to the ribbon
replacement position.
